It was a proud day for the new Federation. Final preperations for the day were made at the shipyards in Oakland. Admiral Tom Tilleman was standing proud on the top of the structure. It was a cold day and he had his hands in his pocket to keep from freezing.

He looked down and saw the future. 30 feet below his feet stood the completed hulls of the two Miranda class destroyers that would be his nation's first long range space ships. The ships weren't much compared to the other starships in existence, but he could still be proud as the Admiral and running his small fleet.

He looked proudly at the USS Miranda NCC-1 and the USS Saratoga NCC-2. The Miranda was to be commissioned in a few hours and begin a shake down cruise the next day. The Saratoga will follow 1 week behind.

"How are you today?" asked Captain James Tiberius Kirk, the designated CO of the USS Miranda.

"Fine Jim," answered the Admiral who noted with distaste that Kirk didn't call him 'Sir'.

"Do you know where Ben is?" Kirk asked refering to Captain Ben Finney, the CO of the new Saratoga.

"He is on his bridge," began the Admiral. "They are installing software for the bridge computers."

"OK, Thanks Admiral," Kirk said as he left.

"How the hell did that hotshot son of a bitch get to be captain," the Admiral asked himself.

The commissioning ceremonies came and went well. It was now time for The USS MIRANDA's shake down cruise.

Captain Kirk stood up from his captain chair when he heard Scotty talking from Engineering to the bridge.

"What is it Scott?" asked Kirk.

"Engineering is ready Captain. I told you it would be 8 hours, but I did it in 2," said Commander Montgomery Scott.

"I figured you would multiply your estimate by a factor of four Scott," said Kirk. "Let's test her out."

"Aye Sir," rang Scott's Scottish accent through the intercomm.

"Mr. Sulu," began Kirk. "Begin departure thrusters at 1/16 impulse power."

"Aye Sir," said Sulu as the Miranda moved under her own power for the 1st time in her life. She was moving at a slow angle moving with a 10 degree rate of elevation. As she broke 250,000 feet, Kirk ordered the angle up to 45 degrees as power was increased to 1/8 impulse power until she established standard orbit.

"How is she holding Scotty?" Kirk asked at standard orbit.

"She's a beaut sir!" replied Scott. "We can make full impulse and I can prepare warp drive in 3 hours."

"Good Scotty," said Kirk. "I want to test everything we can in the next week."

"Sulu, set course for Mars, Maximum Impulse power," ordered Kirk.

The Miranda accelerated. Upon reaching Mars she set a course to go through the asteroid field at 3/4 impulse. Upon Commander Spock reporting on scanners that they had cleared the asteroid field, the real test would begin.

"Scotty, lets try and take her to warp," said Kirk.

"Aye sir!" said Scott. "She's ready for ya."

"Sulu, prepare full impulse acceleration to warp 1," ordered Kirk. "Prepare warp engines.

"aye sir." The Miranda accelerated to warp.25 then .5, .6, .7, .8, .9, and then Sulu reported Warp engines coming on line. The warp engines created a clear path of no particles and the Miranda seemed to stretch like spaghetti as she passed the thresh hold and moved to Warp 1. After 30 minutes at warp 1, Kirk ordered her to go to maximum warp. In 1 hour she was running at her maximum speed of warp 6.7.
