Project 'Arkbird'

Ultra Long Range Bomber/Carrier
As part of the next generation aircraft project, Arkbird will fill the role of a super heavy bomber/carrier. As the Republic is situated far from many of it's possible enemies, it is necessary that an aircraft would need several times the range of normal strategic aircraft. To save valuable tanker resources for the short ranged fighters, Arkbird will have 8 hafnium assisted turbines, capable of Mach 1.3 max speed. With this, Arkbird will have a 1 week flight endurance, allowing it to strike anywhere in the world, or provide constant support for forces on the ground without having to construct heavy bomber runways.
The other unique feature of Arkbird will be it's capability to carry unmanned combat air vehicles, or UCAVs. With options for hafnium powered UCAVs or internal fuel resovoirs, the Arkbird can conduct it's own fighter defense, reconissance, BDA, SEAD, and other tasks. The Arkbird is based on the USAF Strike BWB concept, and carries a total of 265,000 pounds of bombs and AAMs. Outside, 16 hardpoints in internal bays will carry AAMs or small missiles and bombs. Eight 'Bugzapper' pods will be mounted on the aircraft (See below)
The aircraft would have a crew of 5, but an unmanned version is in development simeltaneously.
The Arkbird will incorporate the latest in stealth technology to benefit an already low RCS design. Pallas Athena will be equipped along with the AVSR system.
The following roles are invisioned: Strike/Bomber, 'Piggyback' launch platform, UCAV/UAV control, and Air Defense Platform.
"Bugzapper" (X)ALW-5 Laser Defense System
Based on DARPA High Energy Laser programs, scientists in the UCSNE recently announced the development of the Bugzapper in yet another Rhineland-Draka Project.
Bugzapper is a Liquid Laser pod, at 150kw. It has internal fuel cells, but can off of electric energy from new turbofan systems. The weapon is capable of engaging targets at up to 105 miles, at that range usually missiles. The closer the target gets in, the more damage the LDS can do. The system weighs 1700 pounds, and would be mounted externally on a centerline mount.
This weapon will likely be carried on a few aircraft in each squadron, and on the AA/SEAD bombers in Air Battle Forces.
Experiments in Fiberoptic Lasers are also underway.
EB-9 Night Eagle

http://img104.exs.cx/img104/5171/eb9ii.png
The EB-9 will be filling a new strike role to replace the EB-1C Vampire. The aircraft is powered by 4 supercruising turbofans, and can cruise at Mach 1.8-2.2. There is capability for Hafnium power, but for low level strike it likely won't be used. The bomber will carry 90,000 pounds of armarment, and has the capability for virtually any missile or bomb in the arsenal, along with the Bugzapper ALW.
The aircraft incorporates a low RCS, high lift design, along with Pallas Athena and AVSR. The crew can be as low as two, but likely 3-4 will be used depending on the mission. The bomber is actually quite manuverable and stable, and has performance like a strike fighter.
HNI Armor Package
A new development in armour design, MAgneto Hydrodynamic Explosive Munition (MAHEM) is a breakthrough in technology.
The MAgneto Hydrodynamic Explosive Munition (MAHEM) program will demonstrate compressed magnetic flux generator (CMFG)-driven magnetohydrodynamically formed metal jets and self forging penetrators with significantly improved performance over explosively formed jets and fragments. Explosively formed jets (EFJ) and self forging penetrators (SFP) are used for precision strike against targets such as armored vehicles and reinforced structures. Current technology uses chemical explosive energy to form the jets and fragments. This is highly inefficient and requires precise machining of the metal liners from which the fragments and jets are formed. Generating multiple jets or fragments from a single explosive is difficult, and the timing of the multiple jets or fragments cannot be controlled. MAHEM offers the potential for higher efficiency, greater control, the ability to generate and accurately time multiple jets and fragments from a single charge, and the potential for aimable, multiple warheads with a much higher EFJ velocity, hence increased lethality and kill precision, than conventional EFJ/SFP.
Now, what this means in game terms? KE and HEAT rounds are both equally screwed against MAHEM Reactive Armour, as the jet of metal is sent out by SmartArmorâ„¢ to intercept an approaching round. It will knock KE rounds off Course, and prevent HEAT rounds from actually reaching plasma state at the right time. MAHEM offers a very very high deflection rate against KE rounds and HEAT rounds. The Mk I armour will be dubbed Mayhem.
Now, with the creation of this new armour system, it requires a revision in armour systems. The M88 and Ogre Tanks can carry a significantly larger amount of this armour then the T-80UM7. The new Armour set-up from outside to inside will be -->
Mayhem Reactive Armour, Smart Armour, EleRA, Momentum Transfer Armor, NxRA, CERMAT, then Chobham with Tungsten Honey Combs, then another layer of CERMAT, and finally Rubber insulation to prevent spalling.
Now, the main difference between armour values of our heavy tanks, and our MBT tanks will be the amount of Chobham and Tungsten to keep weight down. The Suggested weight for this Armour Kit, dubbed Sentinel, without Chobham is 5t. This is a massive amount of weight, but well worth it. The engine of the M88 and Ogre do not need to be refit, as they were typically underweight, but the T-80UM7 may need some reworking. The total RHA of the kit without the Chobham and Tungsten is 3250mm.
Also, the MAHEM can and will be used on surface ships for last-ditch anti-cruisemissile defences.
EDIT: MAHEM will also be used on the KAF-90F and other vehicles.
