At the dawn of the 21st century, a world of fragmented nations and renewed violence showed no sign of improvement. Former world powers went into isolationism as their allies ridiculed them and their people protested their actions, each going into conflict that broke down the fibers of their nation.
People lost faith in fair elections, democracy fragmented, and the West fell into anarchy.
People refused to tolerate their neighbors and waged wars in their backyards, borders became bloodbaths, and the East fell into chaos.
Diseases and tribal wars wreaked havoc, civilization decayed, and the South fell.
Inability to adjust to new economic systems and old superstitions crumbled trust, leaders became paranoid, and the North fell.
And with no global policemen or so called defenders of liberty, the Earth became a much more violent place. Leaders picked up the pieces of the old nations, and soon, powers rose from the ashes of global collapse. Technology, industry, civilization returned to the world. And so did violence, greed, and imperial expansion. A new age of empires, fueled by old desires and modern weapons.
OK, if you're familiar with the World Wars, you know this uses the real world. If you're not, go sign up for them too, they kick ass. However, rather than choosing a real nation, you can define your own national borders. Now we just ask for common sense. Don't take a whole continent (With the exception of Australia, perhaps), and if you're not sure, Artitsa, Communism Revisited and I will check it out. This is slightly above modern tech, in that you have some room for more advanced weapons, but other than anti ballistic missile and anti satellite weapons, space is not of concern. Modern nations can do perfectly well with real life tech.
So check it out. Should be good fun.
