"Admiral - Flight control has declared an emergency - Combat Air Patrol Delta 2-6 has had an in-flight incident...the situation is still unclear - but FC is launching SAR teams."

"What's the last location of the flight?" asked the Admiral as he continued to sip his tea.

"60 km due south of New Shiron."

"Alright - Helm - come to new course 010, flank speed."

"Aye Admiral," replied the helmsman. "New course 0-1-0, speed to max."

The Admiral turned to his communications officer, "Alert the fleet of our new course. We may have pilots in the water - all SAR units on standby should report there status to flight command. Medical teams on alert 1 status."

"Right away Admiral."

With the confusion of impending Search and Rescue effort - the yellow "Flash" traffic warning of New Shiron's new guidelines went unnoticed.

Anchorage Naval control Center
"Sir, we have a Wolfish Task Force entering our waters." a young 19 year old girl wearing the uniform of the Coast Guard reported to her boss, a 23 year old male Coast Guard Lieutenant.

"The same one that was in the area yesterday?"

"Yes Sir."

Picking up a mike, he called out in the clear on every available channel, including the international emergency channels, to reach the foreign ships.

"This is the New Shiron Maritime Control Center. Our waters are being ordered closed to foreign shipping due to threat of invasion by third parties. Please state your business. We are sending you by by seperate message a current warning of our policy."

"Sir" a gruff man in his 40s, sharply dressed as a Chief Petty Officer remarked.

"What is it chief"

"I have a flash message from Air Defense Command. They report that apparently a foreign aircraft went down 60 miles from that task force and the surface radar station at Billies Rock Island reports that the task force is heading directly toward that location."

"Ok, thanks Chief." sipping a cup of coffee, Lieutenant Masterson picked up the mike again. "Foreign vessels, we have a report from our Air Defense Headquarters indicating that you have aircraft down. We have no aircraft in that area and have not in the last 2 hours, but do you wish assistance. We can scramble a Coast Guard helicopter and it will be in the area you apparently intend to search in one hour."

Although concerned, the New Shiron Military is not trigger happy. The unreality of the situation means that peacetime concerns are still a factor and the military is not going to shoot first and ask questions later. At least not yet.

Samtonian Air Flight 345 was in trouble.

AS turbulence rocked the rapidly descending plane, the screams of the excited and prayers of the faithful droaned on in the flickering light.

Captain James Killray frantically flipped a bank of switches, shunting power to one of the two engines still functioning, trying to balance out the massive SBS 547 six-engine passenger plane, but it was no use. His co-pilot, Lt. Marty Bushman, shook his head.

"It's no use Jim. We're going to have to crash land."

Grimly, the two hung on as emergency beacons were activated.

And the plane roared on towards the nearest airport capable of taking it- New Shiron National. All non-essential sytems were shut off, but still enough power wasn't available.

The plane was flying in blind and without the ability to reply to anything. All that was on were engines, oxygen, and the automated emergency beacon.

Little did the pilots know this could quickly become an explosive situation.

New Shiron, which at this point is the size of the US and has the same defense budget, has the following Strategic forces (other stuff will be listed later)

Military Forces of New Shiron

Strategic Forces
(Joint Royal Guard / Royal Navy / Air National Guard command)

100 Peacekeeper ICBMs in hardened silos located in central New Shiron (rugged terrain and silos sited in valleys making direct hits very difficult). Silos are defended by a regiment of Mountain Infantry from the Royal Guard, and a Air Defense Group equipped with Patriot II missiles (long range SAM/limited ABM), Hawk 2 missiles (close range SAM) and fixed mounts with 76 mm rapid fire AAA.

Each ICBM carried 10 variable yield nuclear weapons (20 – 200 KT range) in MARVs with radar terminal guidance and a CEP of 100 meters. Range is 12,500 miles.

2,000 Pershing II aboard mobile launch vehicles (200 battalions organized into divisions) spread throughout the country. On warning order, launcher vehicles move to prearranged launch points throughout the country, making a special effort to hide in warehouses, dense trees, overpasses and other likely hiding spots. Each missile battalion has an escort company of motorized infantry from the National Guard (generally older reservists).

Pershing II carries one variable yield nuclear weapon (5 -50 KT range) in a MARV with radar terminal guidance and a CEP of 100 meters. Range is 2,000 miles.

120 Bear long range bombers, each carrying 20 ALCM Tomahawk cruise missiles, each with 1 variable yield nuclear weapon (5-50 KT yield). Bombers organized into 10 squadrons, and on warning, scatter throughout the country to secondary and commercial fields. Aircraft range 5,000 miles, Cruise missile range 1500 miles, CEP 100 meters, active homing

Royal Navy Maritime Strike Command
150 Tu22M Backfire bombers, each equipped with 6 ALCM Tomahawk cruise missiles, same weapon as carried aboard Bears.

90 Bear EW/Recon aircraft, each also carried 6 Harpoon 2 missiles with 5 KT nuclear warhead, active homing, range 150 miles

200 FA35 Strike Aircraft (partial stealth), each carrying 2 Harpoon missiles (as above), range of aircraft 900 miles (plus air refueling)

All aircraft have dispersed to a variety of bases and airports, with FA35 (which are JSTOL and VSTOL) dispersing to large freeways and highways, as well as racetracks, large parking lots and other places that are similar.

for a map, use Australia, except the central part of the country is a mountain area about 200 by 200 miles across (12,000 foot range), the capital Regina is where Canberra would be, Anchorage is wear Melbourne would be, and the Klatchians are were Indonesa and Malaya would be (use their map for them)

sorry, don't have time to do a real map, but this will do.

"We have a civilian airliner in trouble sir"

"I see it, scramble a couple of F16s to monitor, and have Millertown IAP control handle it according to established procedures."

Sighing heavily, General Warden lit a cigerette. Today anti smoking policies were being ignored.

"Better alert Civil Defense too, they will need to send emergency crews and probably graves registeration people too. Send a message to the Ministry of State, they will need to alert that government too."

“Orders Admiral?”

The transmission had set a nervous buzz loose on the bridge.

“As you were…all of you,” replied the steely Admiral. He walked over to his chart rack and lifted a heavy book off the shelf – flipped through a few pages looking for a specific passage, and then tore the page from the binding.

Walking over to the communications station, he smiled. “Hand me that microphone son – put it on the emergency frequency, and fleet communications as well….no use having rumours floating around.”

He cleared his throat as the bridge watch waited for his transmission.

“Attention New Shiron. Be advised that this fleet, bearing the flag of Wolfish does not acknowledge your decreed. Furthermore – this fleet is on a search and rescue mission for two missing aircraft – suspected to have crashed 60 km south of your nation.”

He continued by reading the torn page, “According to United Nations Resolution #74, The Law of the Sea, the UN resolved that:

1. That all areas of sea more than 20 kilometres from an internationally recognised settled landmass or scientific research station are described as international waters.

2. That all 'international waters' shall be outside the sovereignty of any member nation and that no nation can claim to have sovereignty over them.

3. That all nations shall have in or above international waters, unless in a Maritime Preservation Zone:
a) Freedom to fish in designated fishing areas, subject to UN quotas.
b) Freedom to fly
c) Freedom of navigation

I hope that makes the Wolfish position entirely clear. Please keep your forces away from the crash site, as we will be conducting an investigation immediately following the recovery operations. Wolfish Out.”

ooc: Wolfish BattleGroup Atlas (BG-03)has now entered your 100 km boundary.

1 Epyon-Class GM Cruiser
2 Aegis Destroyers
4 Mako Frigate
1 Los Angles Attack Sub
1 SeaWolf Attack Sub

"Yes, they think they may be next..."

"It smells alright especially this announcement about the Neo-Tyr is just them being nice or perhaps they are thinking of sending a few ships our way?"

"Again, they ran like the wind when an ally showed up. I thought the President wasn't really intrested in New Shiron..."

"I can't seem to get a handle on Vrak anymore he's become...odd...and I don't like the fact that a minister of Bok was running around in a international annoucement."

"Well what do you think..."

"I think that Neo Tyr is going to be a tough nut to crack and some of the nations like Jiggady and perhaps even Vrak will tire of War...as long as New Shiron's Queen keeps her hands clean and out of our buisness they should escape unscathed...but I think they are going to interfere...we need to see if we can polietly wave them off before they poke the walrus too."

ok, first of all, Calderon and Wolfish, please no bickering in the thread... I have 230 million people, a military budget the size of the US, and I am far from being a superpower in NS terms.....

secondly, Alcona, since I have presented diplomatic notes to Dyelli Byelli before, I am going to have to assume that I have at least a charge d'affair in at least one Klatchian country and one of you guys has someone in mine (to keep things on track if nothing else)

thirdly, the Switzerland thing in the other thread is a good idea and New Shiron will also use Calderon good offices for similar diplomatic efforts (although Calderon, you should probably use the other thread listed at the start of this one as well)

As a fellow superpower, the Premier of Caldaron extends an invitation to New Shiron to discuss this crisis. We have no vested interest in the proceedings, but such actions have global consequences.

Diplomatic note
The Government of New Shiron is willing to accept the government of Caldaron's efforts to negotiate a peaceful resolution to this crisis. (OOC, check the other thread to see how it developed)

New Shiron seeks assurances from the Federated Klatchian Coast that it intends no invasion of our country, and will not attack our country using weapons of mass destruction or conduct military operations against civilian or economic targets in our country and will not attempt to disarm us.

In addition, New Shiron seeks assurances that its independence and soveriegnity will not be infringed an any way by the nations that make up the Federated Klatchian Coast

Finally, the People of New Shiron view with grave concern and alarm the threat by the Vrak to slaughter the people of Neo Tyr and make the survivors slaves. Such a threat is beyond the pale of civilized conduct and is worse than barbaric.

New Shiron Naval forces and deployment areas
Royal Navy
3rd Fleet (Surface combat forces)

6 Foch class CVL
18 Kongo Class DDG (AAW/SW)
12 Kidd class DDG (ASW/SW)
60 Spruance class DDG (ASW)
10 Perry class FFG (ASW)
30 Knox class FFG (ASW)

Foch class carry an air group with 32 F18E, 4 LAMPS ASW, 4 AEW E2
Organized into 6 CVBG (1 CVL, 2 Kidd DDG, 5 Knox FFG) and
6 SBG (3 Kongo class DDG, 10 Spruance class DDG,)

plus 10 Perry class FFG stretched across 1000 miles of ocean as a picket line 200 miles north northwest of New Shiron for early warning

the remainder of the 3rd Fleet sorties and heads for an area of water 500 miles by 500 miles across 200 miles southwest of the southwest tip of New Shiron

10th Fleet (submarine patrol forces)
30 LA II class SSNs
6 LA III class SSNs

all ordered to patrol positions 100 miles north of the picket line but with orders to remain quiet, no communication, and not to engage until ordered. They go near the surface every 48 hours to check for signal traffic… the failure to receive signals two times in a row means that war has begun and they begin operations.

Coastal Forces
Each Port (6 in all, basically where Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Freemantle, Darwin, and Townsville are located) have 30 PHMs with Harpoon missiles, 24 AH Sea Cobra with 2 Harpoon missiles, and 4 SSK (Golf class) with torpedoes, and the approaches are being mined with sound and magnetic mines, as well as influence and ASW mines. Each port also has 6 MCM vessels, 12 Torpedo boats and several Revenue and Rescue cutters (all ships except the submarines are Coast Guard Reservists)

The Caldaron Soviet Union would like to establish an Air Force Base in New Shiron, this will be defensive only, and will help Soviet intentions be made totally clear to any who might decide to march on Shiron.

The Soviet Navy will not however do any maneuvers in or around Shiron territorial waters, we aren't an invading force, and Soviet Intelligence indicates Shiron's Navy to be up to the task of coastal defense.

The AFB will only need to house one Air Wing consisting of:

32 XF-58s (Fightercraft)
48 XF-60s (Interceptors)
16 XB-303s (Strategic Bombers)
24 HF-86s (Attack Helicopters)

Personnel will number about 2000 total including Marines, support, command, and pilots.

The 283rd Air Wing has been created for this purpose and includes all aforementioned personnel. The CSS Invincible ASN-169 (Nuclear powered Airship, that functions as an aircraft carrier) will deliver the 283rd to the specified location.

The Caldaron Soviet Union formally requests an exchange of embassies with this developement. Ambassador Lynn Sessi is looking forward to serving the Union in this capacity.

The capital city of the CSU is Bren, located in Caldaron.

Dyelli Beybi was also snooping about, in the way it usually. There was at least one submarine cruising off the coast. It was fairly obvious what this one was, it was what the Dyelli Beybians had dubbed an "A-Boat". Probably the only diesel-electric submarine in the world to be loaded with ICBMs, although another sub was tracking the Wolfish fleet.

the ADF is deployed into 10 districts, each with a AD group, Fighter Wing and Regional control center, and the 10 districts are divided into 3 Regions (each with an AEW Wing)

Royal Navy and the Special Wing are deployed in the center of the country as a reserve, and the heir to the throne, Prince Colin (age 23) and the deputies of the critical ministries are there as well.

Ground Forces Command
(mixed Royal Guard / Army National Guard)
40 Mechanized Infantry Brigades (ANG) organized into 10 Corps (basically a division sized unit) currently distributed with 1 corps per district

1st Army (deployed near Anchorage, closest major city to Klatch but dispersed over a 200 mile area)
9 Armored Cavalry Regiments (US style)(Royal Guard)
3 Mechanized Infantry Corps (US style mech inf divisions)
9 Aviation Brigades (1 battalion each AH 64, UH1, CH47)
9 mobile AD battalions (HAWK2/Stinger/Avenger mix)
9 MLRS battalions
3 Engineer brigades

Household Guard
1 Mountain Brigade (Guarding ICBMs)
1 Marine Brigade (guarding Royal Palace)
1 SAS Regiment (hiding in the mountains)
9 Light Infantry Brigades (hiding in the mountains)
1 Ranger Brigade (hiding in the mountains)

40 Training Divisions (NG/RG mixed) preparing for transition into 40 Motorized Infantry Divisions (this will take several months)

ooc
I based this force size based on US military forces pre 9/11 and its a mix of older and present day equipment.

In addition, all communities over 10,000 have a sizeable Civil Defense infrastructure and very careful monitoring will notice that sizeable number of civilians are being evacuated to the mountains, generally the young and fit of child bearing age (all the conscripts who are doing national service for the government in non military roles... about a million total. A population nucleus should the worst happen)

(OOC) It's trackable by a guy with a pair of binoculars. Commodore William Traskel just shook his head as he watched through a video feed from the ASW Sea King helicopter that was patroling a few dozen miles offshore. An antiquated SSK, with missile ports indicating it had a few SLBMs loaded. (ooc, I would assume one of the ancient Soviet Yankee class boats).

"Ok, we don't want to start a war just yet. Send a pair of missile boats to stay just over the horizon, keep a helicopter ready to sortie, and send out a Coast Guard Cutter and a fishing trawler. Make sure the Trawler has a net, and have them start fishing once its dark. Make sure they get entangled.

Then have the Coast Guard Cutter notify the submarine by hail or loudspeaker that it is being cited for unsafe use of the waterways, and that the captain or the owner of his vessel will be expected to demonstrate in a maritime court within 90 days why he should not be fined for the cost of the net.

Make sure you send our Harry, he has a sense of humor about these things and he should hit the right note."

The grizzled Chief chuckled before nodding and going to the phone to begin passing on the Commodore's orders. He liked his Commodore, he had a sense of irony.

The GM Frigate was by far the closest Wolfish vessel to the crash "site", and was making good time through the 1 metre waves.

"Admiral? This is Captain Torgolson on the Spinnaker. We've launch our rescue 'copter, and are less than 20 minutes away from the sight...I'm providing you with a visual to the crash site now - this is live footage from the 'copter's video cameras."

The Captain flipped a switch and the TV on the bridge focused in on the video feed - at the same time, the feed was transmitted to the Admiral - 100 km back in the aircraft carrier.

*picture resolves and pans - showing nothing but ocean...eventually, it comes around, and zooms in on a bright yellow stain on the surface - the camera follows that dye - and focuses on a parachute, then a man in a life vest...*

"Admiral - I hope you can see that - the Spinnaker has located a survivor!"

In the rescue helo a flurry of activity broke out as a SAR Diver prepared to go over the edge - stretchers were prepared for the wounded airman.

"Spinnaker - this is SH-04. We are commending rescue operations. One victim, due north of your location….okay, okay, Diver over the side…standby.”

The radio feed went dead as the pilot switched to internal comm. channels.

A second helicopter – this one from the cruiser Talos - joined the first, and added its video feed.

“Flight Command this is TH-01 we are now over the sight. We’ll continue the search during SH-04s operations.”

The camera on the new helicopter panned around as the aircraft turned to resume the search for the other downed airmen. Then, a different voice broke in on the radio – still broadcasting on the “fleets-wide” channel.

“Holy Shit – that’s a friggin sub.”

“Flight Command – we have an un-identified submarine bearing 259 from the crash site…immediately halting search efforts….request additional ASW assets to the area.”

The pilot didn’t wait to hear the fleet confirm they’d launch anti-sub assets – he knew they would.

Instead, he released his hover, and pushed the yoke forward, setting up a fly-by run of the unidentified sub.

“Jacobs – get a sonar buoy and a hydrophone ready for launch…Steve – get the video switched over to digital stills – we’ll want some high-resolution pics of this son-of-a-bitch.”

Their training kicked in quickly – as they abandoned their SAR role, and assumed their ASW roles.

The active sonar buoy went over the side with a splash, about 400 metres from the targeted sub – the helo past south of the beast – its camera snapping nearly a hundred high-resolution pictures – as the bird turned and circled towards the north side, where the hydrophone was dropped.

http://www.nasjax.navy.mil/namtrau/1.jpg

The hydrophone would pick up any tell-tale engine noises or “signature acoustics” that would help Wolfish identify this specific sub – and this sub class – in the future.

“Cargo is away and clear.”

The pilot reported back to flight command and heard the radio chatter that told him additional help was on the way.

“Flight Command…this is CSA-ALFA 2-1- we are on course and should be over the target area in 10 minutes.”

“Copy that CSA-ALFA. We have you on radar.”

The Common Support Craft swept in low from the south, and dropped a line of new sonar buoys across intersecting paths between the sub and the crash site.

It banked, and headed in for a second run – dropping six more, before climbing to 25,000 feet to begin the process of monitoring the incoming mountain of data.

*secret* - 800 feet below the surface, the Wolfish Seawolf submarine "Expeditition" increased its speed to 10 knots, and set a course to bring it up behind the unidentified sub.

Lieutenant O'Neal stood in the pilothouse of the small Cutter C123, a 40 foot CG Rescue Cutter two miles south of the fishing trawler Kerri T. His Petty Officer (and his exec) watched the radar screen.

"We have the sub, looks like the trawler is dead on course with her."

"Good, hope this works. Sometimes the Commodore is a little too clever."

"Oh shit" muttered the Exec.

"What'

"looks like two helicopters are bearing down on it. They ain't ours, they must belong to the Wolfish."

"Oh shit is right.... hope they don't fire."

two miles away, Lieutenan Maggie Hayes, CGR and currently dressed as a trawler captain steered her boat toward the sub. They were supposed to snag it with the net, and hope the net or the boom broke before the trawler did. Good thing her daddy was a fisherman, or she wouldn't have a chance at this. It paid to listen to Daddy she decided. On some things anyway.

She could see the sub now through her thermal imaging goggles as both her boat and the submarine road 8 foot seas (ooc sea state and the fact that fiberglass isn't very radar reflective should hide the trawlers dangerously close approach until things get out of hand later), and that is when, just as they were 200 yards apart and time was running out for a last minute change of heart, the sub suddenly turned sharply as a helicopter came roaring over the deck at low altitude and high speed, dropping what had to be sonar buoys into the water.

"Oh goddam it to hell, we are going to fucking hit them." she swore and moments later, the thin fiberglass hull of her boat smacked hard into the thin steel hull of the Dyelli Byelli submarine.

In seconds the boat began to fill with water.

"Get your rescue gear and get over the side" she shouted to her crew as she reached for the radio and began broadcasting a mayday on emergency channel.

"This is the Keri T, we are a trawler located 4 miles north nortwest from Weather Buoy Charlie 210 and we have collided with an unknown object. We are taking water and sinking. Mayday, Mayday,"

Two miles away, O'Neal swore even more violently than his lieutenant had, and ordered full speed. The 40 foot fiberglass and wood Cutter turned on all its lights, and raced toward the scene at its maximum speed of 18 knots.

"Get helicopter support here. We have a problem." he ordered his Exec.

The A-11, as the submarine was rather creatively named, was sitting on the surface completely stationary when the helicopter flew over. It was 108 metres long and 10 metres wide. The large chi-rho painted in red on the side of the coning tower, immediately picked it out as Dyelli Beybian. The appearance of the helicopter appeared to cause some alarm onboard and within a couple of minutes it had crash dived, dropping like a stone to 180 metres. It then turned, heading back out to Sea at 26 knotts. Whatever kind of engine it was running it was very very quiet. (OOC: A GE Electrodynamic #1 coupled to a 'Softblade' noise reduction device on the screws - it runs a MAN Vulcan 2 to recharge the batteries.) Apparently the crew were not at all interested in a fight.

my trawler accidently ran into your submarine as it crash dived (which requires forward momentum, otherwise you go under rather slowly..) it would also have had to have at least some engines going to maintain steerage way in the seas described It is exceedingly unlikely my trawler did any damage to your sub (except maybe some dents from the aluminum and steel booms bouncing scraping it perhaps.... basically going off the Japanese fishing boat incident (couple of years ago, a US submarine accidently surfaced and rammed a Jap fishing boat near Hawaii) and a few others like it

But your crew would definitely have heard it

(OOC) Of course it's running an engine when it dives. It's running the Electrodynamic #1. It can't run the Vulcan as that would cause a flood. And no it wouldn't damage a sub that size. Subs need a lot of armour in order to not get crushed when deep at Sea.
I'll also point out it's very hard to accidentally ram into something that big. It's over 100 metres long, it's not exactly something you can miss. The Jap fishing ship got caught when the sub surfaced. The crew on the DB vessel would assume any ramming during a dive was a deliberate attack.

“SHE’S DIVING,” hollered the ASW officer on the light jet as they continued to monitor the incoming data from the sonar buoys. “Notify the fleet.”

“Flight Control this is CSA-ALFA 2-1. Target is submerged. We are continuing to monitor – patching through data feed now.” With that the weapons officer hit the button that would transmit the data from the hydrophone and sonar buoys directly to the fleet.

On board the carrier the Admiral stroked his goatee, “Let’s not let this get out of hand – we have our seawolf on station…he’ll follow the sub and ensure it doesn’t interfere with our rescues ops…Did we identify who’s sub it was?”

The Intelligence Officer stood, holding a large black binder. “Yes Sir…at least according to her markings, the sub belongs to the nation of Dyelli Beybi – which is currently embroiled in a regional conflict – which may have started with a pro-Tzarist uprising in that nation.”

Turning pages while the bridge crew looked on, the Intelligence officer read, “New Shiron entered the conflict – the exact details or motive for that entrance are unknown – and then abruptly pulled out when the whole Klatchian region joined in the conflict – bringing to bear a total population in excess of 30 billion people.”

“Sweet Zeus,” said the Admiral. “So the Dyelli Beybi sub was likely monitoring the waters of an enemy – testing out the new exclusion zone – and we got caught in the middle?”

“Essentially yes Admiral.”

“Alright – sound fleet-wide General Quarters. I want to double the Combat Air Patrols, and lets get this recovery effort over with quickly.”

A common and simultaneous “Aye” went up from the bridge.

O'Neals boat reached the area a couple minutes later and rescue operations immediately got under way. Within five minutes though, the cutter found the hard way what the Keri T had actually run into. A half submerged barge, apparently adrift for who knows how long, and the cutter found it when it too smacked into the steel hull of the barge. Luckily the cutter was much more heavily built than the trawler and suffered serious damage but not serious enough to sink her.

"So what happened to the sub?" O'Neal wondered.

A wet and pissed off Lieutenant Hayes was soon hauled aboard, as were her 4 crewmen.

"Radio the Commodore Chief, looks like plan A didn't work out." O'Neal ordered tersely.

the fleet is deployed well to the south to provide New Shiron with a fleet in being so that it will remain a viable force should the Klatchians invade, and so that it can fight a guerilla war at sea against Klatchian sea lines of communication (convoys, especially follow up convoys) should an invasion occur.... this is why it is so far out of the way as it forces Klatchian fleets to maintain flank forces in case it moves or send sizeable forces away from the principal area of operations to deal with it. After all, I am outnumbered essentially a hundred to one, so I have to be prepared to preserve forces as long as possible...

Part of the "make it as costly as possible strategy"

My picket ships will not fire unless fired on... but any foreign ship will be approached by coast guard ships if they enter the exclusion zone who will demand the right of inspection and if rebuffed, a couple of missile boats (small attack boats about 90 feet long) will escort it until it gets within UN recognized coastal waters, then the demands get a bit sharper (as at that point you are definitely in my territory according to international law)

On the plus side, it would have to come up to schnorkol eventually, and they would easily pick it up then. Although this might be a better boat than the old Golf and Foxtrots in his fleet, the vulnerable time for a diesel electric was when it recharged.

"Send a couple of minesweepers out, and tell them to ping like crazy. If we don't get her with the buoys, the minesweepers might just flush her out."

"Where is it going?" Commodore Torrey asked. He had taken a few hours to get some sleep, and had left word to be awakened as soon as something new came up.

"Its present course and speed will take in the direction of the sub hunt sir."

"Shit." Torrey cursed. Quickly dressing, he was out the door a couple of minutes later, striding purposefully toward the operations center. "What the hell are they going to do? Its not as if they can hunt subs, they don't even have sonar probably on a relic like that."

Walking briskly into the room, he was pleased to see everybody followed procedure and kept working, only the Chief of the Watch announcing his presence before going back to his job. They had too much to do without saluting and coming to attention every time an officer came into the room.

"Sir, that old cruiser is still heading toward the Charlie 210 Weather Buoy." a young woman wearing the rating of Petty Officer 1st class announced.

Torrey just shook his head. If it was friendly, it was going to just add to the noise, and if unfriendly, well, it wasn't really a threat, a few stand off missiles from the missile boats would see to that should it come to that, but it still would get in the way.

At this time, monitor but do NOT fire upon any foreign vessels without express orders from this Headquarters.

I forgot to mention this in the naval post, but each Naval District (12 in all) has a division of troops for coast defense duties. They man air defense (SAM and AAA) battalions and surface to surface cruise missile batteries, and provide base security. Each division also has a few batteries of fixed medium and light caliber duel purpose artillery (76 and 127 mm). Basically similar to the old Soviet style Coast defense troops (Cold War era)

They are all Coast Guard reservists. The Coast Guard also has 4 divisions that are regular units (for training all the reservists before they go back to being civilians) that are available as a general reserve in time of war or national emergency. They are all being prepared for shipment by rail to the northwest coastal zone. These divisions do not have artillery, but instead have MLRS batteries.

A quick review of Janes Warships of the World will show that New Shiron has no ships equipped with depth charges, and does not use them for any purpose. "Proceed at once to map grid 2139 and wait for a final go order before making your attack. IF ordered, your squadron will engage and neutralize a foreign cruiser that is conducting combat operations that are contrary to the national interest and perhaps survival of the nation."

He started his engines, and soon the area was deafeningly loud as 8 AH1S Sea Cobras, each armed with a Harpoon missile and 2 HARM missiles, warmed their engines prior to takeoff. Also on the ramp, the remainder of the squadron, a UH1 equipped with radar for airborne early warning and surface search, and a pair of LAMPS Sea Kings, each carrying a pair of ASW torpedoes and equipped with sonar and MAD gear also warmed up.

The A-Boat was 18 metres under the surface now, snorkel depth if they decided it was a good idea to engage the diesel...
It was unlikely the single torpedo would sink the Cruiser, but if it hit, it would put a sizeable hole in the side that would keep it occupied and allow the submarine to slip away.

Lieutenant Osterman swore violently as her sonar chief reported the faint sounds of very high speed screws and the tell tale pinging of a torpedo acquistion sonar.

"Looks like somebody fired a fish"

"Any idea who?" Jill asked firmly.

"No ma'm, it could have been the sub. Probably was, I don't think that foriegn cruiser has torpedo tubes, but they may have a chopper up and it could have dropped one. We are too far away to hear the splash over the depth charges."

"Hmm" Jill thought for a moment, the most likely thing a homing torpedo would go for on a ship that big was the stern, homing in on the screws, but if it was a bigger torpedo, it might go for the kill to.

"How far out is air support?"

"About 70 minutes ma'm, they are just leaving base."

"Radio in this report." she ordered sharply at to her exec, a young (even younger than her) ensign.

"The foreigners are exchanging fire, including depth charges and torpedoes. Alert search and rescue. We are moving out of the immediate area to avoid being drawn into the exchange." She looked at the map, the nearest SSK was about 30 miles to the southeast. A friendly SSK was definitely a good card to play so she ordered her little squadron to high tail for that area at 25 knots.

The news of the clash near her coast reached the Queen quickly.

"Do we have any way of reaching the Dyelli Byebi government quickly and directly?"

Lord Harrington, looking a bit uncomfortable replied quickly. "No your majesty." Pausing, he thought about it for a moment. "However, we do still have that back channel with Alcon. Although its reliability is unknown. Our other choice is a radio transmission directly to the Dyelli Byebi government in the clear via satellite."

"Can you direct it that accurately?"

"Yes Majesty, when we hacked into their computer networks, we also obtained some intelligence information that is directly relevent."

Within 30 minutes, even as the situation off the coast remained unclarified, a message went Dyelli Byebi.

A low soprano voice, the Queen herself, spoke over the radio as it was beamed to the Dyelli Byebi governments principal telecommunications complex.

"A foreign cruiser belonging, as best we can determine, to the nation of Brydog has dropped depth charges for reasons unknown on a submarine that has been tentatively identified as belonging to your nation. The Government of New Shiron has not authorized or requested such an action by that ship, and had no prior knowledge of its plans, and it this time still has no knowledge of its intentions other than what it has demonstrated. We are prepared to conduct search and rescue operations once the incident ends, for whoever needs it."

voice print would determine that it is actually the Queen speaking, stress indicators would indicate she is being truthful.

Soviet Naval Command in Isdana, Caldaron:

"Grand Admiral, there is a new report from the CSS Invincible near New Shiron."

"Send it to my office Commander."

Back in his office, the large Grand Admiral addressed his computer and brought up the Intel report. After scanning it, and making notations, he sent it to the Premier in Bren.

In a limo headed to the Soviet Palace:

The Premier read the report and picked up the phone.

"Branson, I want you to order the Invincible into Shiron's waters to confront this ship. Avoid sinking it, but force it to leave Shiron's waters. Also, maintain the recon flybys of all of Shiron's territorial waters."

"As you command Premier Rathan."

The Premier hung up.

Back in SNC, Isdana:

The Grand Admiral keyed the intercom.

"Commander, send these orders to the Invincible's captain: Enter Shiron, spook intruders, seal the leak."

"Aye, Grand Admiral."

OOC: The Invincible will be within firing range of the Brydoggy cruiser in two NS hours.

A couple of questions.... first of all, did the Dyelli Byebi torpedo hit your cruiser? If so, why not? (did you use noisemakers etc)

And how big is this carrier? A Nimitz class (100,000 tons in size) carries a maximum of about 100 aircraft (rarely does, but could), so what is this thing, about 400,000 tons or so (supertanker size). How fast does it move, where was it lurking, how soon will it arrive, what escorts does it have?

We need to establish were this is happening as well, as it is getting a little vague.. I would suggest at this point the action is about 150 miles or more from the coast of New Shiron (near where Darwin which is called Anchorage in my land is located) and that the action will be moving away at about 10 knots for the sub (hard to zip along and remain silent).

IC
Message sent by radio to the cruiser and later on the carrier that belongs to Bydog

Heavy Ship Activity near zone of Exclusion for New Shiron. Approximatly north of city of Anchorage, all vessels involved in Operation: Tiger Paw should avoid this area. Possible hostile craft in area. Heavy anti-submarine with at least two navies in area. Avoid at all costs.

The Q-ship, like any nervous civillian ship, decides to take another route around New Shiron and turns back west. Two navies, and reports of explosions and a growing fleet presence just makes it unsafe.

(OOC) Umm, so how did your carrier get to the cruiser without anyone spotting it on radar or anything else? Also did the torpedo hit or not?

OOC: That lone carrier won't stand a chance against the Invincible. Even if you get all your birds airborne you can't sink it before it sinks your flattop. Carriers move in battle groups for a reason ;)
