These are the parties, ranked in order of size.
Socialist Party
Leader: Current Prime Minister Anne Eriksen
Positions:
funding for education is the main issue for them
Pro-gay rights (including gay marriage)
supports strong regulation of business
supports the labor movement
pro-military
is seen as Callisdrun's "patriotic" party
vehemently secular
History: the Socialist party came into power in Callisdrun about thirty years ago. Since then, in a succession of several popular Prime Ministers, they have nationalized several industries, including health care, power, internet, water and other such things, legalized gay marriage, relaxed laws on drug use (the city of Drun is sometimes called jokingly "Drunsterdam") and much less intrusive government policy in general. Callisdrun's education system has greatly benefitted from Socialist party rule, and the party generally supports enviromental legislation. For the past fifteen to twenty years, they have basically run the government on 'auto-pilot' as little needs to be done these days. In the next few years, they plan to devote even more money to education, to make Callisdrun's education system one of the best in the world. They are the main member of the Leftist Coalition
Green Party
Leader: Jan Freysen
Positions:
Enviromentalism is party's main focus
Basically supports the Socialist Party's positions but with less fervor on some and significantly more intensity on enviromental issues.
History: The Green party is often seen as the enviromental watch-dog of Callisdrunian politics, and most of Callisdrun's enviromental bills are authored by Green Party members. They are a member of the Leftist Coalition.
Business Party
Leader: Ivan Harthy
Positions:
No positions on "social issues"
Pro-business
anti-regulation
favors abolishing the minimum wage
favors privatising most things currently controlled by the government, including the military
usually seen as anti-military
favors eliminating all enviromental legislation
favors selling arms, including nuclear weapons, to foreign countries
favors cutting all funds for education
History: The last time the Business Party controlled the government was 35 years ago. During that time, because a variety of issues, most involving corruption, they were largely discredited. Generally only larger corporations support the business party, as they favor eliminating regulation that favors small businesses. They have no positions on social issues. The public generally distrusts them because last time they were in power, severe economic recession and urban decay followed. They are seen as somewhat un-patriotic.
Communist Party
Leaders: (Unofficially, she isn't a member of Parliament) Erzsebet Sorvik and (Officially) Ferenz Novikas
Positions:
Favors nationalization of more industries
Pro-gay rights
strongly pro-military
favors a more active foreign policy to foster socialist/communist movements in other countries
favors even stronger regulation of business than the socialist party does
History: The Communist Party has fallen in and out of power, their peak being about 33 years ago, when they swept the elections in opposition to the corrupt Business Party. After a few years, the people decided they wanted a less extreme, though still liberal, government, and so the Socialist Party came into power. The unpopular decisions to add the Hammer and Sickle to everything government related also had something to do with it. Since then they have basically been the extremist branch of the Socialist party, and are currently a member of the ruling Leftist Coalition.
Fascist Party
Leader: Adolph Quisling
Positions:
Favors "ethnic cleansing," primarily, eradicating the vampiric population (about 15% of Callisdrun's total population)
Strongly against gay rights, favors outlawing homosexuality
favors outlawing communism
anti-labor
pro-big business (unless those businesses are owned by vampires, gays, jews, or anyone else they don't like)
favors expanding the borders by force
anti-environmental
pro-military
anti-abortion
anti-birth control
favors ending women's rights
intends to make Callisdrun a dictatorship
History: The Fascist Party of Callisdrun is seen by most to be a bunch of right-wing nutcases. They have never allied with the Business party mainly because of the Fascists' anti-vampire stance. They usually get a few votes and most of their members are skinheads.
Anarchist Party
Leader: None, really
Positions:
Favors total elimination of the government and abolition of all laws
History: The Anarchist Party goes back a long way, but is not supported by many Callisdrunians because constitutional government goes back hundreds of years in Callisdrunian history.
Note: Abortion, women's rights, separation of church and state, and the death penalty are not issues in Callisdrunian politics for anyone but the Fascist party. Abortion was legalized about 80 years ago, women have had equal rights for several hundred years, and the death penalty is only used as punishment for treason. Callisdrun's government has been secular for hundreds of years, as well, and it was Pagan before it was secular.
