New release from the Saigon Chronicle:
SAIGON, South Vietnam (REUTERS) – The ASEAN Regional Relations Council announced Tuesday that Saigon would host the First ASEAN Games in November 2004. The festival, centered around the promotion of peace and good relations between the member nations.
The Games will commence with its opening ceremonies in mid-November of 2004 and will last for 15 days. The Constitutional Monarchy of Prathet Thai announced it would send a delegation of 196 athletes while the Kingdom of Preah Rachea Kampuchea and People’s Republic of Singapore (Randomness By All) did not make their estimates clear as of Tuesday.
All member nations of ASEAN are expected to participate, however, the participation of the People’s Republic of North Vietnam is unclear at this point. Sunday night, the PRNV launched a full scale invasion of the Republic of South Vietnam. Officials from the People’s Republic of North Vietnam refused to make immediate comment.
The Regional Relations Council of ASEAN announced Tuesday that they would be opening their invitation to outside nations to increase international relations between ASEAN and the rest of the world.

New release from Saigon Chronicle:
SAIGON, South Vietnam (REUTERS) - Sunday will mark the opening ceremonies of the first ASEAN Games at the Saigon Superdome to celebrate South Vietnam's hosting of the competitive athletic festival between the member countries of ASEAN.
Security has been heightened all around Saigon, Cho Lon, and surrounding areas where venues exist. The Republic of South Vietnam is still only days removed from a tense, weeklong crisis with northern counterpart, the People's Republic of North Vietnam.
The PRNV delegation announced earlier this week that it fully intended to compete in the Saigon, though specific numbers and details were not contrived.
South Vietnam has yet to finalize it's roster of athletes, while Singapore, Prathet Thai, and Kampuchea have all submitted paperwork to send athletes, but have no estimate as to the size of their respective delegations.
The final event listings have 21 specific sports categories and multiple events: Athletics, Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Cycling, Diving, Fencing, Gymnastics Artistic, Gymnastics Rhythmic, Judo, Rowing, Soccer, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tae Kwon Do, Tennis, Volleyball Beach, Volleyball Indoor, Water Polo, Weightlifting, Wrestling.
The event has also drawn in very large sponsorship that ASEAN officials say will hugely benefit the funding and budget of ASEAN. Large corporations have already bid highly to obtain the rights to advertise during the Games.
Officials estimate that the publicity and attention attracted by the event will net at least 10 million dong for ASEAN which will then be redistrubed to the member nations.

Official Transcript of Opening Ceremonies from Saigon Superdome:
Hello everyone! Welcome to Saigon as we are about to kick off the highly anticipated 2004 ASEAN Games here in the Superdome. Atheletes from all of the ASEAN member nations have decided to send delegations to compete here in Saigon.
The crowd is huge, consisting of over 50,000 spectators tonight. A quick look at the audience...oh, and there is President Lien Binh Quoc of South Vietnam, and it looks like the leaders of Kampuchea, Prathet Thai, Singapore, North Vietnam, and Malaysia have joined him in the President's Box.
Kicking off the ceremonies will be Tran My Phuong, head organizer of these Games: Welcome everyone to the First ASEAN Games! Tonight marks a momentous occassion for our region! Tonight and for the next two weeks, we will demonstrate to the world the strength in our unity and the power of our people. Tonight, the world will take notice the people of ASEAN! So now, let us begin the First ASEAN Games, and let us usher in a new era of prosperity and good fortune!
Wow, and here we go. The delegations are marching in...
First in is: the Kingdom of Preah Rachea Kampuchea! The flag bearer is actually Prince Noradom Sihanouk, he'll be competing in the archery competition here. The delegation is relatively small here, a modest 130 athletes for Kampuchea.
Next is: the People's Republic of North Vietnam! The crowd's response is surprisingly VERY warm. Lots of tension has surrounded the delegation of this nation, of course, we are barely days removed from the crisis between South Vietnam and North Vietnam. Flag bearer is Nguyen Thi Quang, the winner of the 1998 Asian Games Marathon. The delegation here is rather large, 197 athletes...
Next in: the Constitutional Monarchy of Prathet Thai! This delegation huge as well, 196 athletes to match North Vietnam's number. Headed by their flag bearer, Tamarine Suginiparnikarn, champion tennis player.
And now: the People's Republic of Singapore! Another very big delegation of 200 athletes. Very warm applause and welcome for the athletes of Singapore. Flag bearer is Chan Kit Woo, the 2002 Asian Games champion in swimming. We'll expect to see some medals from this guy in a few days yes? Singapore, of course, the only nation that stood up to the nuclear threats of North Vietnam during the crisis days ago. Relations between Singapore and South Vietnam have been increasingly amicable over the years. With North Vietnam however, not so good.
Now the host nation: the Republic of South Vietnam! By far, the largest ovation is for the home delegation. A delegation of 195 athletes headed by Loc Tho Hoang who swept all 8 gold medals in men's gymnastics in Pusan at the 2002 Asian Games, the first time that has ever occurred.
And now, we have Nhu Quynh to sing "Ngay Buon Da Qua Roi" (The Sad Days Have Passed Us), a song that was written specifically for these Games...
Beautiful voice...that was a wonderful performance.
And here comes the torch entering the Superdome...it looks like the final bearer of the torch is no other than South Vietnam's first medalist at the Olympics, 1972 and 1976 Olympic Champion in the 200 meter dash, Hieu Qua Khoa. The cauldron has been lit, and so begins the two week festival here in Saigon!
