Spacecraft ready for test flight.

Dr. Andreas Rhoodie led the reporters through the lab space with a mixture of nervousness and excitement. “As I’m sure you all know, the problem of getting a craft into space is not actually getting that ship into space, it’s designing and building a ship in the first place. We have military-grade ballistic missiles that can reach space; we need only to replace the warhead with a spacecraft. The problem lies in building a ship that can withstand the intense heat and pressure of leaving and reentering the atmosphere, all the while protecting the crew from the dangers of vacuum, and deadly radiation called ‘cosmic rays.’ When we set out to build a space-worthy vehicle, weknew of these risks and acted accordingly. Now, I know you folks don’t have as many letters behind your name as I do, so I’ll try to keep it simple.” He smiled to show it was a joke. He didn’t need to, though, as many Malkyeri found his slurred Dutch accent (he’d been raised in Shandar) to be quite charming. “Essentially, the craft is shielded by a complex web of lead-based crystalline alloys. We have conducted several tests already, and are very pleased with the results. I hope that by the end of the year, we will be able to actually launch a craft with a crew onboard into high-atmosphere or even orbital space itself.” He smiled again, saying, “That is off the record, of course. I don’t want people to be disappointed if it doesn’t happen. Ah! I see it is already eleven o’clock. If you will excuse me, I must be off. I have a class to teach. Georges will see you out.” He looked at his assistant, who nodded. He left the reporters and started outside.

As he left, he heard Georges answering a final questions:

“Well, the ship hasn’t been christened officially yet, but most here are calling in the Kennedy.”

As he was crossing the quad, a man in a campus police uniform came up to him. “Excuse me sir, but if you’ll come with me? You are needed in the Theoretical Sciences Department.”

“But I have a class in ten minutes, and I really can’t afford to be late, we are going to do some exciting experiments with cathode ray tubes and–”

“You have been excused of all teaching obligations. Your class is being led by a substitute. They will get along fine without you, I’m sure they are very bright.”

“But – Oh, never mind. Let’s go, I guess.”

The police officer nodded and followed him to the Theoretical Laboratory.

AP-The Space Administration of Malkyer has announced that the experitmental spaceship Kennedy has been cleared for launch, and this launch will take place in late October. The King said in a speech earlier this week that the launch would "Usher in a new era, where Malkyer can become a power in space." The pilot of the craft is Colonel James Dantin, a highly decorated Airforce officer. He says he is "excited, but nervous."
