History of Yr Widdfa

Yr Widdfa

In the early 18th century a revolutionary group arose in Wales, calling themselves the Cymbrogi, the ancient Welsh word meaning 'companions of the heart'. They fought politically for Welsh independence from the British Empire but failed. They had far less luck than the Irish, perhaps because of the lack of any separation between Wales and England. They were led by Brian McKay.
After failed political attempts and viewing armed violence as futile against English might, the Cymbrogi simply left. The traveled Northern Europe and established themselves on a bit of land jutting out into the North Sea. They named it Yr Widdfa (pronounced like Ear Withva, the 'th' as in thy not thigh) after one of the old regions of Wales before the Saxon and Norman conquests. They avoided involvment in the Napoleonic Wars and supportied Irish Independence groups from affar, eventually growing into an economic power. As Europe spiralled toward World War I, Yr Widdfa instituted mandatory military service for two years. The well trained army played only the smallest roll in the World Wars, though it did send 300 men to England to serve in the Commandos.
In 1952 the last King of Yr Widdfa, Malcom II stepped down and joined the parliament in making Yr Widdfa a democracy. Though it has retained the name of Kingdom it is now ruled by the Grand Duke, elected ever 6 years with no term limit.
Since its formation, it has founded the Allied Celtic States, it has formed an alliance with the New Roman Empire and brought a number of nations into its alliance. Some time back, Yr Widdfa took charge of the Feifdom of Gwenedd, which they built from the ruins of the Kingdom of Noriath, which had fallen into anarchy.
Though its military is extremely well trained with a crack Spec-Ops corp. Naval and Air Forces are smaller than the army but capable of easily defending Yr Widdfa's air and sea. The navy is based around the Hawk Carrier Group.
It's military history is not overly long, as Yr Widdfa prefers diplomatic solutions. The Cymry of course have been around for millinia and were around before Rome, but as Yr Widdfa, they have taken part in only a few major wars up until recent times. The Kingdom took part in the Napoleonic Wars, alligning itself with France against its former oppressors, the British. In 1870, the Treaty of Deva repared relations with England and opened trade with them. During the World Wars, Yr Widdfa remained neutral. They did, however, send a Brigade of commandos into service with the British in both. They're first war since then was the Halladi-Hattian Conflict, in which portions of their Special Forces, the Cymry Brigade, were sent in to aid Hallad. Their troops have also served during insurections in Kreigorgrad, Psov, and most recently Parthia.
Among its many oddities is the continued use of Midieval Titles such as Duke. It is also one of the few nations to employ a Chief Bard (currently Talagan Estelion) who sings regularly at affairs of state.
Major Industries include Cattle, raw materials, fishing, and software.
The flag is a black double headed eagle on a green field. The green standing for the deep connection with the land held dear by these fiercely loyal people and the double headed hawk represents watchfulness

The typical Beddgelen reaction to recent publication in The Igovian Soviet Commonwealth of the History of Yr Widdfa has been, "they allied with the Romans?" plus a few expletives. While many have found it interesting to hear that their pioneering ancestors -who many centuries ago departed Wales and neighbouring English counties- were followed by others, that interest has been limited by apparent ideological differences between the resulting nations.
