War of the Pipes

Camel Eaters

The dawn hit the grey mist over the inner teeth casting a dark rainbow. And the pipes played on. Seama McBoir finished the lament for his dead brother he wiped the tears from his eyes.

The McBoir Clan stationed below raised their assortment of swords and daggers to the coming sun singing of the deeds of Nuada McBoir who died at the hands of those treacherous Likarneys and now the clan was ready to go to war.

The men had prepared to make a strike against the Likarneys in the Valley of Worschester. They raised their crossbows and opened fire on the tradelines of the Likarney clan. The Likarney merchants fell like flies.

The War of the Pipes had begun.

OOC: In my nation clans are allowed to go to war as long as they use really outdated weapons. Y'all can send troops to support whichever side they just have to use outdated weaponry.

"Alright, I will contact Camel Eaters for permission to enter there airspace and drop 100 men into the highlands above the McBoir's old Castle. Ask for volunteer's and tell them to go to the museum and gather up all the clan garb and weapons the curator will spare, no guns allowed!" barked Josey Wales the Minister of Defense as he picked up the red phone to call Camel Eaters.

Sounds fun, so why not. 300 men of the 2nd Armored Cavalry, now mounted on horseback, 500 men of the 12th invantry and 150 of my snipers armed with longbows (I'm Welsh after all) have been dispatched to aid the McBoirs. The Cavalry and infantry carried the swords of the Cymbrogi and the unit took that name. They were lead by Llwch MacFergus, a captain in the 2nd Cavarly (and an expert swordsman). The men were chosen for their ability with their weapons and for horsemanship. They carried the standards of Yr Widdfa, the Black Hawk on a Green Field.

"Hello? Oh you want to help the McBoirs. Sure approved." The secretary picked the knife up and began whittling again.

Each will step forward and be issued a Long Dirk (dagger), a Targe (shield), and a Claymore Sword. In Addition to these weapons, we were able to locate twenty English Longbows with arrows and several nasty-looking pikes. Form up in a line gents we don't have all day", states Lt. Dan.

At the McBoir stronghold of Caer Fergus.

"We've gotten how many men? Where are we going to deploy them?" An older man with a three foot beard asked pouring over documents about the manufacturing of armor.

"Why not use the Welsh longbowmen at the Shannus Pass." A young man in full war armor said while propping bagpipes up on his shoulder.

"Aye." The man with a three foot beard said while scratching his bald head.

At the Likarney stronghold of Worschester plans were being made.

-Zhargond, leader of the Zhirgindeese Mercenaries
OOC: Wonderful, a medieval-tech war! This is perfect for the Zhirgindeese, of you'll hire some of them. Their traditional weapon is the axe, though they have a great many varieties of it...
Payment should be in the form of room and board for each soldier during the time of their employment, and a set amount of profit per soldier for the war: half paid in advance, half upon achieving victory.

Llwch chuckled at the grizzly trophy. He was a medieval reenactor, but had never expected to use his knowledge in his career. "Aye, my da was Irish, my ma's Welsh. Aye, I think we could hold Dotherlin. I'll be a ways from my longbowmen, so I'll need you to watch out for them. What do you expect from the Greeks? Will they simply try to hold Worschester or will they attack? Defense seems to favor hoplites better, but then, that would give away the initiative. Message to the Zhirgindese Mercenaries:
From the Likarney Clan.

"The only way you're going to be able to make it to us is the Shannus Trail. Beware the Pass though it's easily attacked and hard to defend so you'll need to get through there quickly."

3,800 Zhirgindeese warriors strode along the trail at a quick walk. Each carried at least two varieties of axe, and many carried three or more. Types included average one-handed chopping axes, curve-bladed axes for great, sweeping blows, light, narrow-bladed "Zhirgindeese belt knives," tiny all-steel throwing axes less than twice the size of a man's hand, slant-bladed axes for smashing through plate mail, long halberds for dealing with cavalry, and many others.
The other 200 fighters, armed with the smaller of the Zhirgindeese weapons and dressed in colors that blended in to the surroundings, had moved ahead to scout the area of the pass...

OOC: Typical dress of a Zhirgindeese mercenary, just so you know:
A long coat, open in the front. Bright colors are usual in the daytime.
A belt or war harness for carrying axes.
Chain mail (when combat is expected).
A long-sleeved, tight fitting shirt (hidden under chain mail except for on arme, which are covered by the coat sleeves).
A kilt-like garment that goes from a bit above the waist to slightly above the knees.
Trousers (underneath the kilt).
Boots- generally brown or black.
Some wear metal arm-guards, or use small shields (the targ is popular).
All in all, it leads to a rather distinctive appearance...

The Corinthian spears fell from their at rest positions. They snapped down horizontal simultaneously. This was done without a command being called. They braced for the impact of the frenzied onslaught of the cavalry. It was insane frankly, cavalry charging straight into spears, still, it worried the Corinthians a little.
The Spartans shifted enough to keep the formation as the Corinthians absorbed the enemy cavalry charge. They stood silent, watching the enemy on the plain. As they neared, they Spartan spears fell horizontal and the javelinment poured their missiles into the oncoming wedge. The 300 didn't move. Once in range, the Peloponesian commander ordered the Stonebowment to open fire.

The Peloponesus
22-10-2004, 06:02
The Spartans had learned a thing or two since ancient times and they quickly borrowed a trick from the Romans. The ranks behind the first raised their shields and locked them with the tops of the front ranks. The twenty longbowmen had little effect, still the armor piercing power of the longbows began to take a toll after a few volleys hit. 5 Hoplites went down in a short time. The gaps were filled in. Still the Spartans made no sound. At the last moment the let out a cry of "Alala Ares!!!" and the rear ranks threw their weight against the front. The javelinment scattered out of the way as the enemy approached. The Spartan phalanx rolled toward the pikemen. The Corinthians advanced with them, those on the right pushed against the enemy horsemen.
As soon as contact was made the Corinthians on the left began to wheel to strike then enemies right flank, taking advantage of the short front of a wedge formation. Another hundred Argive hoplites marched out of the city to make sure the Corinthian flanking maneuver wasn't outflanked. General Polimarchus sent a message to the Likarney forces to charge on the enemy left flank. At the same time the light cavalry charged around the battle to attack the enemy archers.
Camel Eaters
22-10-2004, 12:11
The Mountain Riders disengaged and wheeled backwards they each pulled out two sticks and then they fit one stick into another they launched the fitted stick at the Corinthians on the left.

OOC: They used one of those spear throwers an atalatal but I forgot how to spell it.

The Likarney men formed up in to disorganized lines and charged the Mountain Riders who after launching a few more spears turned and met them. The characteristic that makes the Mountain Rider so useful is their total lack of fear and their insanity.

The Likarney lines were cut through like butter as the Mountain Riders plowed through them. When they were out of the mass they turned and charged the strongest point of the Likarney line. Swords flashed as man after man was brought down headless. A Likarney began slashing at the horse legs and others soon followed to protect their steed the Mountain Riders rode away. They got of their horses and now on foot charged the Likarney line again.

The great city of Dotherlin sat surrounded by fields of grain and barley. Sheep and camel and horse roamed the very outskirts of the town as huge tractors chugged along gathering the crops.

The town wall reaches thrice the height of a man and is three times as thick. It encircles the entire town with a huge automated gate on the north face. (designed so vampires could find safety within the walls while the sun was rising) Four guard towers stand one at each direction. Each tower has a radio and the latest tracking equipment so if anyone tries to attack they will know. But according to law it is clan wars so the tracking equipment may be used but the town's mounted cannons may not and as such their firing pins have been removed.

As the first planes unload 250 calvary units disembark armed with heavy nadachi (japanese long swords) and yari's (japanese long spear). As the second wave of planes opens 250 calvary archers unload with the famous japanese recurve bow. Planes fly off and the calvary approaches the Lt. "Sir we were supposed to report to you upon arrival" the mounted soldier says. "Good, a 750 man calvary force will supplement our cause well" says Lt. Dan. "What's with the Japanese armor?" "Monald Crump the Minister of Commerce sent it to us. Apparently it was given to us as part of our trade agreement with the Japanese Mainland." stated the mounted soldier. "The heavy calvary will work really good against those Spartans" Lt. Dan thinks to himself. "Men we are off to attack the stables at Hamlay. The town of Hamlay was medium sized and rather bustling even at this time of night. Horses were heard in the distance as the men approached it. A large Likarney force was in the town. "Here's the plan men" says Lt. Dan. "We send the pikemen to the edge of town with the Mountain riders. Letting them draw out the forces in Hamlay. The Yari Calvary will remain hidden until the pikemen draw out the Likarney's then they will flank the stables and release all the horses held in the pens. Archers make sure no message riders escape, and you are responsible for dropping all the sentry's around the stables. Remember all mounted units except the mountain riders will remain hidden from view to hide our actual numbers until the Likarney's are drawn out. Is that clear?" A resounding "Yes Sir" is belowed from the ranks. The pikemen formed up in a long skirmish line and decended towards down towards Hamlay.

Likareny's had splintered into small groups to attack the pikemen 10 of the pikemen lay dead. The Likarney's were having a hard time penetrating the pikemen's defensive stance, the long spears held them at bay. The Nodachi leaned forward in the saddle as they came upon the Likarney's. Shoup was the sound the Nodachi made as the heavy spearlike sword sliced through the air. Blood splattered everywhere as the Nodachi Calvarymen plowed through the Likarney's. At this moment the Yari Calvary trotted up to the stables where a large number of war horses were being kept. The Yari tied ropes to the posts and jerked the corrals down driving the horses up over the hill towards the Lt. and the rest of the attacking force. Calvary archers covered the edges of town looking for any stragglers that might be trying to send a desperate message to the other Likarney forces. The Mountain Riders have guided the Hawdawg troops to the Well. Lt. Dan is nestled into a hid location looking upon the fortifications of Lillikut.

"Sgt. looks like we have a enemy force of about 200-300 men and they have some sort of bunker complex to maintain the garrison in. The well must be in that center bunker their. These bunkers are going to take away our tactical advantage the calvalry force we have so we are going to have to improvise." says Lt. Dan.

"Fill me in sir I am quite confused." says the concerned Sgt. York.

"First we need a diversion. Similar to the stunt we pulled at Hamlay but instead of Pikemen we will use the extreme hatred the men in camp have of the Mountain Riders to our advantage by using them as bait. I will ask the Mountain Riders to ride like Hell towards the far bunker complex. They can weave around the complex fairly easily with the smaller horses they ride. This will enrage the Likarney's. When the Likarney's are whipped into a frenzy we will have the Mountain Riders move out in front of the complex to make a "stand". As the Likarney's are focusing on the Mountain Riders our remaining pikemen will attack the complexes from the east and the Nodachi Samurai will dismount and attack from the South of the camp. Our archers will stay in the woods to offer concealed covering fire for our troops. The Medival Knights will ride up into the Mountain Riders formation dismount and launch a foot assault on the front of the Likarney's bunker system.

If this works the mass confusion and intense anger of the Likarney's will be their downfall." says the Lt. Dan

The medival knights form up a center and draw there cold steel from scabbards. "Ye be a good day fer killin" says hawdawg trooper who really looks upset for having to get off his horse. The Medival armed men move into the melee with the Likarney's in the front of the bunker complex. Organized lines quickly break down as men fight hand to hand. It looks from Lt. Dan's perspective like the Likarney's are ill prepared for this attack.

While the Medival knights bring the frontal attack, the Nodachi Samurai are quietly sneaking into the rear of the camp. The Samurai pour into the fighting with a swiftness only seen in legends. The folded steel in the samurai swords are the finest pieces of cutlery made all other combatants fear the blade. As small groups of Likarney troops break off to form lines the concealed archers rain death from above with massive amounts of arrows.

The situation is moving to a quick end.

"Lt. Dan battle report" hollers a runner.

"Let me have it son" says the Lt. "We have lost 10 more pikemen, but the Medival Knights are doing well they only have 5 men down. The Nodachi Samurai haven't sent me any figures sir." says the runner.

"Very well son, back into the melee you go" says the Lt.

The first wave of Nodachi Samurai move in under the hail of arrows. 20 men fall before they reach the archers. Once they reach the Likarney's archers all hell breaks loose. Quick death comes to many men at the wrong end of the Nodachi swords.

Meanwhile........

The Medival Knights have routed the center of the field just in time to see the Likarney's wheeling on the flanks of the pikemen. "Mount Up screams", Count McFarley. It takes the knights some time to rehorse since the armor is quite cumbersome. This is all the time the Likarney's need.

The pikemen just don't have the numbers to cover there flank and form up in a defensive triangle to try and stop the slaughter. Calvary Archers are raining arrows on the Likarney's attacking the Pikemen, but the waves just keep coming.

"Lt. Dan, we only have a few pikemen that are still alive" says the runner. "I know son, the Medival Knights have finally rehorsed, send them to try and save the remaining pikemen. We have all things under control except the pikemen area. Send a runner and get 100 nodachi samurai to attack the Likarney's from the rear. We will catch them in a pincher move knights on the front and Nodachi to the rear." as the Lt. sends the young private onto the field.

The Knights wheeled around and charged at the Sammish. The arrows fired from such a distance had little effect on the heavy armor of the Knights. As the Knights charged across the field into the Sammish the Horse Archers emerged from the woods and attacked the right flanks of the Sammish foes. The 130 man Nodachi Samurai calvalry plowed into the Sammish from the left flank. 100 of the Nodachi dispatched to help relieve the pikemen retreated to the woods with the 20 remaining pikemen to act as a reserve force.

The Sammish were much better warriors than the Likarney and began dragging Knights off their horses or cutting the horses legs out from under them.

Flaming arrows made their deadly paths known as the Horse Archers were attacked from behind.

The Likarney forces wheeled and began a direct attack on the Nodachi that were helping the pikemen.

Sammish Stonebowmen stood against the remaining Nodachi almost pure stone like their bows.

The Nodachi crash into the Sammish warriors hand to hand battles are furious. The Samurai are quick and deadly with the finely crafted Nodachi long swords. The Sammish are a worthy foe, but the discipline they exhibit will be there undoing...........

The Knights are in trouble. The Sammish front lines are cutting legs from under horses and throwing men to the ground. 50 fall in this first onslaught. The remaining Knights dismount and prepare to fight on foot. Maces, Ball and Chains, shields and swords alike are drawn for use by these armor clad men as they continue to bring the fight to the Sammish........................

The Calvalry archers are suprised by the sneaky use of fire arrows. Ten archers fall while in full gallop. The Calvalry archer spot the hidden archers and split into two groups to attack these men from two angles. Unknown to the attackers the archers all carry two samurai swords which are easily drawn on horseback. The archers sling there bows and make a hastily planned full charge on the hidden archers..........

The remaining pikemen are dieing a cruel death. Part exhaustion, part Likarney's they just don't have the numbers to hand on very much longer. The Nodachi sent to aide them is hacking through the Likarney's but it doesn't look as if they will get to the Pikemen in time......................

The Sammish Stonebowmen fall but they just keep firing and fighting they give no quarter and take none either...

The Sammish swordsmen bring out hooked pikes designed to bring down knights in full armor. They began slashing forward and grabbing at them...

The archers pull out dirks and daggers and charge the Calvary men some going forward the rest staying back and firing heavily at the onslaught...

The Likarneys press forward with their attack on the pikemen. Ever since the Sammish arrived they seem to have become better warriors...

The Mountain Riders take on a huge Sammish assault that would have killed off most of these brave Hawdawgian men. They fought to the last. Sach stood on the corpses of thirty dead Sammish warriors and just kept going. Arrows stuck from him and many swords just kept being shoved into his body as he died an honorable death. The small Sammish force that was left was so pitiful that it wouldn't have made a difference...

The Knights recognized the dreaded hook pikes. five fell prey to this wicked tool. The Men with ball and chain came forward and quickly splintered the handles of the pikes with the heavy spiked balls..... A combination of ball and chain and mace work and hook pikes had each group in a stand off...............

"look at these fools charging horse calvalry" says the Lt. The pincher move by the horse archer worked to some extent a group of stonebowmen came out to fight but not all. A choice had to be made. 60 men peel off of each pincher group and attack the embedded archers while the 120 men remaining attack the force that came into the field. As they dismount 10 are immediately struck down...................

A loud groan could be heard as the last pikemen dies form a Likarney blade. The Nodachi just could not get to them in time. All twenty men lay dead in a circle. Surrounded by a huge pile of dead Likarney's. Now the Nodachi attacking the Likarney's become enraged. The center force is down to 50 men. The rear attacking force has faired better they still are 100 strong and are crashing into the explosive firing archers now................

The Nodachi see this trick and recognize the "Bait and Switch" move. These Samurai quickly run backwards and make two swinging gate formations and wrap around the outside of the Likarney's circle..................

Dan and the Hawdawg troops. Although the presence of Queen Jenevee made the men somewhat nervous. They would do anything to protect the life of a fellow Hawdawgian.

.........On a flat plain outside Dotherlin.................

The army seemed to slow to a crawl and eventually stop on this large mesa. Lt. Dan rode ahead to ask if we this was the camp site.

As he rode up to King Hannon he said, "Great King are we to make camp here tonight? My men have ridden many miles today and need to rest soon."

Linfield turned and looked into his eyes. "Your men tire while my men die below." He turned to Jenevee and said. "Weren't you supposed to be well versed in martial arts?" At this Linfield raised a great war horn and the Hannon troops below fell back regrouped and charged back up the hill to join their King.

OOC: Sorry for inactivity. Connection's been patchy.

IC: The Greeks bent into the enemy charge and pressed forward. Many hoplites fell in the shock attack of the initial charge. The Spartans in the center pushed forward, thrusting with their spears or hacking with their short swords. The threw their shields into the enemy. Gen. Crateros called for the Likarneys to attack.

"Okay King Hannon, no need for insults" says Lt. Dan "If you are ready to attack then we attack." Lt. Dan kicks his horse and rides to the Hawdawg men to ready them for an assault.

Jenevee looks at Linfield and says, "Linfield you don't need to be so harsh sometimes, Lt. Dan's men will prove themselves very well in battle. All his soldiers were pulled from the 1st Expeditionary force of the Hawdawg Royal Marines. Those men train harder and smarter than any other unit in our military. Oh and yes Linfield, I am trained in martial arts and I also served in the military too remember?"

Jenevee continued, "If you want me too I will spill blood on the battlefield with you, I just ask that you give me a keen sword to work with."

Jenevee started to put on some light armor that the Hawdawg Master Sgt. York had given her as a present earlier in the day.

OOC: I am still having trouble maintaining a connection in the evening. I could not get back into the forums last night at all after my last post. Sorry for the lag in time.

Linfield shook his head and stood in the saddle. "All forces will garrison inside of Dotherlin!"

As the forces moved into the great city Hannon archers took up post they were capable of killing anyone that dared approach.

Linfield rode fast to meet the enemy. Stepping from his horse he called forth the leader of the Sammish.

Elak Sammish was a big man taller than Linfield by a foot. The King just stared at him. Knowing what was to come Elak kneeled in front of Linfield. The King bent over and whispered into his ear. "I wish it had not ended this way... brother." At this he drew sword and severed Elak's head.

Linfield rode inside Dotherlin with the head in tow...

OOC: I guess my allies are pulling out now that their leader is dead. That seems Celtic ;).

With their allies abandoning them, the Greek phalanx began to pull back from the battle. The Peltasts and cavalry came up, throwing missiles into the enemy flanks in an attempt to give the infantry a chance to pull back.

A rider was sent to the town bearing an olive branch. He was instructed to request permission for the Greeks to gather their slain.

Hey Peloponesus, let's see who can delete more posts. ;)

Llwch sent a few of his knights to follow the Greeks to keep an eye on them. He galloped back to the city and vaulted from the saddle in front of Linfield. He stared for a moment as the fury of battle wore off. Then he knelt and placed his sword Linfield's feet.
"Your servant, M'lord." he said, "Sir Llwch of Caer Legionis, Commander of the Cymry forces here."

Linfield sniffed and said "Get up boy. You've no need to kneel to an equal. Let the Greeks have their dead," he gestured at a group of idle men "you men help the Greeks collect their fallen," turning back to the approaching Greeks "you may bury your dead nearby. If you so wish."

Llwch rose to his feet again and gestured some of his men to help with the dead. He sheathed his sword and wiped the sweat from his face.
"What now, sir?" he asked as he watched the retreating forces, "Is that the end? Or will the Likarney and McBoir continue this war?"

"All I know is that Dotherlin is safe. The Sammish will go back to the Likarney and the Likarneys may decide to end it or not. King I am but I still do not know what the future holds. Although this war has claimed many. I will send a "suggestion" to both sides that continuing in this folly would not be for their best interests."

He sighed as the Hannon dead were counted and named. Turning back to Llwch "Yes the war is over. You there," gesturing at a man with a radio "bring me that. Thank you." He began speaking into the radio in an ancient Celtic tongue when he was done drums and pipes across the kingdom had been lifted up. The war was over.

OOC: There still is a banquet and some land to be redistributed if y'all would like that.

The Hawdawg troops cheered with the announcement from King Hannon. Lt. Dan led his men down to assist with gathering the dead from the field. As evening neared the men anxiously awaited the impending feast to follow.
