The Aztec Elections

Aztec National League
22-10-2004, 02:33
The Aztec National League is conducting its elections. The polls shall be open until next RL Wednesday. Please read the following to get an idea of where each of the candidates stands. OOC Note: whoever wins the election will also gain the Soviet Congress.

Candidate 1:
Name/Party: Quetzalcoatl/Democratic Communist Party (DCP)
Age: 25
Current or relevant previous position: Premier of the ANL
Military Experience: YES, Lieutenant in the Revolutionary Jaguar Warriors (Pre-ANL)
Preferred government type: Democratic Socialist/Liberal Scandinavian Paradise

Key Issues:

-Nuclear weapons: "I am strongly opposed to the construction and much more, the use of nuclear weapons. These dishonorable, cowardly weapons are too indiscriminate - they cause too much harm to civilians and are detrimental to any country that possesses them. To make this issue a null issue for the nation's future, I will fight to create permanent bans through domestic legislation and international treaty."

-Political system: "The political system that we fought for in the revolution has worked well and is working well. It is the best system, in my opinion. In our system, there is no room for discrimination, in our system, a small group of unscrupulous elitists can not take over and change the system to their own benefit. However, at the same time, our system does not take away the creativity from the human spirit and allows people to better themselves and their community."

-Military: "Our military is very important to who we are. Not only does the military represent some of our heritage, the military is key in defending our people and our beliefs if need be. I believe in armed neutrality, in which we are able to have a capable standing military and at the same time, only use it in times of dire need."

-Civil Liberties: "Our civil liberties have distinguished our nation. I am very proud of the amount of civil liberties we have, and I believe they must be expanded. The people can not be disenfranchised and must not have the federal government step in on personal lives in non-issues."

Popularity rating: 75%

----------

Candidate 2:
Name/Party: John Kirkland/Soviet Republic Party (SRP)
Age: 58
Current or relevant previous position: Former Interim Executive Council Member, Current member of the Soviet Congress (Durango)
Military Experience: NO
Preferred government type: Iron Fist Socialist
Key Issues:

-Nuclear weapons: "I do not like nuclear weapons, but I believe they are an important key defense item. I believe we need to escape the notion of what is honorable and do what is tactically correct. The lack of nuclear weapons makes us a very easy target, and being an easy target is not how I would like to see the ANL."

-Political system: "The current political system is ok, and in I believe in many areas good. But there are too many restriction in fulfilling our obligations and duties. The government has placed too many restrictions on itself for the sake of civil liberties and the sake of our system. Now, I believe the only way to completely fulfill our duties to our system would be to take out the road blocks in the way."

-Military: "Our military is a vital part of our society. They are more capable of taking care of our people and should be given more powers to complete their duties. I propose we build up our forces greatly and partake in military action if it behooves us to do so."

-Civil Liberties: "We have too many civil liberties, plan and simple. There is no way we can have a civil society with the current levels of civil liberties. In the interests of order and security, I will promote to cut the excessive liberties."

Popularity Rating: 3%

----------
Candidate 3:
Name/Party: Tamuzin/Libertarian Confederate Party (LCP)
Age: 62
Current or relevant previous position: Current Soviet Congressman (Quintana Roo)
Military Experience: NO
Preferred government type: Not specified
Key Issues:

-Nuclear weapons: "I am strongly against the use of nuclear weapons. That would give the government the ability to destroy a nation, possibly the world. That, in my eyes, is far too much power."

-Political system: "The political system of the Aztec National League is based on the centralization of powers. It infringes on the lives of people and the rights of states. I proposed we slowly dissolved this communist union into a confederacy, in which civil matters will not be resolved by the government. We can not let the government hold too much power, or we will see a creeping monster of totalitarianism."

-Military: "I will cut the military. 'Nuff said."

-Civil Liberties: "This goes hand in hand with my qualms with our political system. I believe the state should not infringe on the rights of the people. Therefore, I believe the people should have a maximum level of civil liberties."

Popularity rating: 20%

----------
Candidate 4:
Name/Party: Roberto Santiago/Conservative Nationalist Party (CNP)
Age: 34
Current or relevant previous position: Party leader
Military Experience: YES, Captain, Red Aircore
Preferred government type: Iron Fist Consumerists
Key Issues:

-Nuclear weapons: "The use of nuclear weapons is a must. I propose to pull out of all the treaties the communist government has binded our hands with and immediately start the construction of nuclear weapons. While I do not like the concept of using them, I will order their use if need be."

-Political system: "The political system is screwed up. The economic policy puts too much pressure on the central government. I want to lax the responsibility of the central government and allow private individuals to take over something the government should not be accountable for."

-Military: We have an extremely weak military. I want to cut funds from social services and privatize them. With that extra money, I will build up our military and create a first rate system.

-Civil Liberties: "Our nation is one of deviants and laxness. In the name of moral decency and order, I want to cut our civil liberties not to what is considered excessive, but regulated to their basic need."

Official Statement from The Proletariat Commonwealth of The Island of Rose:

If Quetzocoatl does not win, bad things will happen. As in, bad things will happen, very bad things. Weird things that I do not even know yet. But they're so bad you will piss yourself, so win, please?

Response from Quetzalcoatl:

"I am very appriciative of your support and, with your support, the nation shall resume it's glorious path that it temporarily astrayed from."

Although Quetzalcoatl and the DCP has a 50% advantage over the second place LCP, this has been a great first night for the Libertarians. Last night, the LCP was a minor, third rate party. They only had 2 seats in the Soviet Congress, both from the state of Quintana Roo. However, tonight, they have been able to take over several seats once held by the Soviet Republic Party. Although it is unclear, it appears they have won 8 seats in this first round. However, the DCP still has a iron hold over the executive position and most of the other states. It appears the only state that still widely supports the ailing SRP is Durango, the home state of Congressman Kirkland. Voting shall continue.

Today, the CNP has gained several votes and are trailing the 2nd place LCP. Although the DCP's overal lead percentage wise has shrunk slightly, they still have a strong 20+% lead over the LCP. In addition to suprises, the SRP has gained some votes, but is by far in last place. The candidates had this to say:

"This seems this will be a great victory for our nation and our people. With the help of the people, I will win and I promise, I will lead this great nation to exceed the glory we had."
-Quetzalcoatl

"This shocking election has electrified our party. The LCP was a minor party only a week ago, and now it looks like we are the main opposition party. I am very enthusiastic about our impending new role in the Soviet Congress."
-Congressman Tamuzin

"Whoa, this has been a major suprise to us. The CNP is a brand new party, we just started out months ago and now we have gained a lot of support. I know I will not win this election, but I also know that this will bring light to the government - their system of communism has a new formidable foe."
-Roberto Santiago

"Well, it looks like my chances are slim, but that is no reason to give up. We have retained some of our power in the Soviet Congress, and we have made some gains, the state of Durango has voted almost entirely SRP, all 3 Congressman, including myself are from the SRP. We may have lost this election, but there is still time and we are still alive and kicking."
-Congressman John Kirkland.

The CNP has taken a major 2nd place lead in the Executive Elections over the LCP. This is a major shock, as the CNP was a far 3rd place. However, the CNP has no Congressional candidates, so the LCP still remains as a the main opposition party. Despite this large pull-ahead of the CNP over the LCP in hte executive elections, the DCP still has a large commading lead in the elections. Although all signs indicate that the DCP will win, there are still 4 more days in this election week.

Quetzalcoatlmust win.I fear that many people will think"Well he is too young and ignorant. No I don't think that.He is the only candidate that speaks his mind.I understand his views. He makes himself very clear. His preferred government type is a good choice. Most of all I think he can lead the Aztec government very well.

Offical Statement from Toya Tokugawa Nicoli:
Our nation has found memories of the Aztec National League and Primer Quetzalcoatl as we emerge out of a dark time of war and isolation... a time in which our nation was ruled by greed and murder... The remnants of the communist system crumbled into dust and criminals who cared only for profit gained control our government... the very fabric of our society was torn asunder... we headed towards anarchy and self-destruction until recently when we retook our nation.

Although we are no longer communist, we feel that that we are closer to the socialist camp under our ancient system (OOC: It's kind of hard to explain but it is basically an elective monarchy with Keljos (councils) the highest being the Keljo Dauk, economically we follow a form of 'Market Socialism').

I myself have fond memories of my visit to Veracruz in the Aztec National League and of Primer Quetzalcoatl during the Communist Nation Summit as a member of the Patoxian diplomatic corps.

Primer Quetzalcoatl is an inspiration to the world, and I sincerely hope that the people of the Aztec National League return him to leadership.

We also hope that contact and relations will be restored between our lands and peoples.

Response from Quetzalcoatl:

"I am, myself, pleased to see our long time friends at Patoxia come out of their isolation. Regardless if you communist, socialist, or even capitalist, any nation of honor deserves peace and friendship. Once I am relected, my first acts shall be to establish new diplomatic ties and reaffirm our old ones...the friendship between Patoxia and the Aztec National League shall be among our top priorities. I know my people and their government is willing to lend out aid and support to any one of our allies, if you require it, you only need to ask.

I thank you for your very kind words. I am deeply honored by what your have said and I look forward to another tenure, a tenure in which our two nations will once again be in friendship."
