why is space tech more expensive than modern tech?

what sounds more expensive? an AK-47? or a Supercharged tri-plasmic disorientating plasma rifle? thought so ;)
Because a ship 2 kilometers long takes a hell of a lot of metal to make, and it costs a hell of a lot to get that metal.
