Rise of Nations Wars

ooc: well, I got to thinking, rping is nice and all, don't get me wrong, but what if we could fight the wars on a slightly more sophisticated level? if anyone has the game Rise of Nations, they know it's an awesome war simulation, and I think it would be perfect for fighting NS wars. you could pick an RL nation that is close to your NS nation to play with and go up against others in an online battle. if I get enough support for this, I'll start proposing a list of rules, setting up matches, etc. if interested, please post

Here's some rough rules:

Enforced Rules
I will personally enforce these.

1. No nation under a month old may research/use nuclear weapons. Conventional missiles (V2 and cruise) are ok, but no nukes. If nukes are used by a nation that's too young, the person being nuked should take a screen shot that proves as such and post it and the match will automatically be decided in their favor.
2. New NS nations can't be the Bantu. This is due to the fact that their nation power allows them to have a much higher pop limit, so a nation with a 50 million pop can have an outrageously large army. The match will be voided if a young nation is the Bantu.

"Honor Code"
These are expectations of a nation that aren't going to be "enforced" as such, but it just makes everything more fun for everyone.

1. A nation is expected to remain consistent with their RoN nation. If you fight one match as Russians, don't fight the next one as British. Also, for example, if you're a communist nation, don't use the French, use Russia or China. If you have T&P, research governments consistent with your NS government.
2. If you're a young nation, don't field massive armies. Hence enforced rule 2.
3. No rushing! Rushing is shit anyway, but this is supposed to be the build up of the countries. Wait at least 15 minutes before attacking unless you both agree otherwise.

its a good plan, however not everyone in here will have the game. That, and this forum IS the game. If I wanted to play games like Rise of Nations I would do it instead of coming on here to post, but I like RPing. That my meager opinion anyways :P

true, naturally this is just for those with RoN, and I just think it's another way of playing. hey, if nobody likes it, I'll get the hint

RP is much more sophisticated than RoN... In that it encompasses mutlitple tech levels, different types of weapons (In RoN, it's mostly the generic unit with 1 or 2 variations), more realistic numbers.... It's far from perfect from simulating NS wars. How can you get it to simulate population difference? How can you get it to simulate economy? You can't without creating huge loopholes for cheating.

For example, an NS nation could be only a dozen million and have an awful, but be fighting a nation of hundreds of million with a good economy. So a realistic war would take this into account. But in RoN, there's no way to keep that economy simulated because there are no limits based on NS nations.

The scope of nation types, technology levels, types of weapons, economic factors, population, and others, could not be encompassed by RoN. Don't get me wrong, RoN is a good game, but not for this purpose.

seems cool. i have RoN
Axario

maybe sophisticated wasn't the word, more like...oh I dunno, maybe active? I dunno the word I'm looking for
a lot would have to go off the honor code, there are ways of setting up economic inbalances in the game, but it would have to go off honor code mainly, I dunno, this is just an idea I'm throwing out there

If you ask me probably the best game is one wished an active role in a military campaign would be something like a customised version of Victoria, Europa Universallis II or Hearts of Iron... but you know personal opinion.

I'll join. RoN is one of my best games, and an RP version of it does sound like fun. You do know of course that it's based on the board game "Risk"?
Axario
19-10-2004, 17:10
I only say RoN because I think it's a pretty commonly owned game, and the best of the war sims that I know, I've honestly never heard of the others you listed

of course, but you can definitely argue that any war strategy game is based off Risk, it's the definitive strategy game.

anyway, I'll post some general "rules of engagement" pretty soon. also, anyone interested please say if you have Thrones & Patriots, or just original

I think It's a kick ass idea I own RoN and think that it would be an excellent alternative to Rping
Generic empire

I was thinking about the idea a few weeks ago since I have RoN, but I concluded that it just undermines the purpose of nationstates and the forums, but then again, the forums were tacked onto the game itself after all, so I suppose this is similar to that. One could argue though, that the forums and RPing have become the game itself.

I know, I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers, I just wanna have some fun. I don't think it undermines anything, I think it just adds another element to it.

Of course. It's a good idea for people who have RoN (which is awesome in and of itself).

Good idea on the rules, it makes it much more realistic. Even though I have RON: T&P, I would not use this system as I think that RPing is the main part of NS. Issues decide it, and in RoN, you can't enforce that. Good idea though.

Do you own it?
Every person who's posted here to say he's got the game has said that its a brillliant game. I'll take their word over yours, plus the fact that I have the game and I know that its one of the best strategy games there is.

For it being a few years old it's a really great strategy game. I'd be interested to see what you think is a good game?

how bout we just agree to disagree? I don't want this turning into an argument about how good RoN is or isn't. in other news, anyone wanna set up a skirmish with me?

RoN can be used "stratigically" but not in this type of game, maybe some TBS like People's Tactics.
