ROME- Rodin Hartian was overwhelmingly elected Emperor by the Roman populace today, ending the twelve-year reign of Paul XII. Hartian was sworn in immediately and will name his cabinet in the coming weeks.

"Today the Roman people voted overwhelmingly for an Emperor who does not believe in excessive taxing, wasteful projects and a hurtful isolationist policy. Rome has been a power for over 2500 years- it is time that the world recognizes us again," said Hartian in Rome after his victory was announced.

Hartian won 68% of the vote on the first ballot, with Paul trailing every step of the way. Hartian had run against Paul in 1998 but lost, deciding to withdraw from politics at the time. However, Paul's recent waves of increased taxes and not-so-excellent services reignited Hartian's interest in politics, so he decided to step back up to the plate again and pounded Paul routinely throughout the campaign, something he failed to do in 1998. Fading public opinion for Paul and overwhelming support of Hartian during the international debate also greatly helped Hartian's cause.

Immediately after his victory, Hartian pledged a new international course for Roman politics. He hopes to play an even greater game in The New Roman Empire alliance, and hopes to realize his dream of uniting the old territories of the Roman Empire into a massive, Commonwealth-style union (OOC: I should probably note the main base for "RomeW" is on an Earth that's of completely my own creation, one that's tied to the NS world but not affiliated with the other "Earths"). His first plan will be to re-unite the Byzantine Empire with Rome (ending centuries of fueds), and to explore the possibility of independence for Rome's colony on Manium, Romanus Eropidus.

He also announced a new peacekeeping initiative, creating a 10,000-strong unit of the Roman army whose main resposibility is peacekeeping. "We cannot sit idly while Rome's neighbours are constantly fighting each other. We must serve in the interests of peace," he said.
