GII News Bulletin
"Good evening, and welcome to GII News, the only station that gives you the unbiased truth according to the Emperor. I'm John Strokov.
The Imperial government issued a most startling statement today, announcing Emperor Alexei II's intention to reinstate gladiatorial combat as an official entertainment form of The Empire.
The bloodsport has long been an underground amusement in the provinces, but has been outlawed for years in Generia proper. This edict will see the games returning to their rightful place in Generia City.
Plans for construction of an enormous coliseum-like stadium are underway, and the structure is set to be completed by early March. Be sure to stick with GII News Network for more updates. GII News, we just have to look good, we don't have to be clear. Now on to the weather..."

In the southern senatorial capital of Sofia, senator Markus Ivanov sat at a table in an open air cafe. A half empty bottle of Scotch sat on the table, along with an ashtray full of extinguished cigarettes. The smoke trailed into the air, as the senator's hand cut through the cloud, bringing a shot glass to his lips, draining the liquid.
The senator slammed the glass onto the table, as a second man, dressed in a business suit, took a seat across from Ivanov. The second man held a flyer in his hands, and wore an expression of distaste. He flipped the piece of paper to Ivanov.
"Look at this. What the hell is he doing now?"
Ivanov took the flyer, and scanned it. He let out a dry chuckle.
"He's smarter than he looks."
"What are you talking about? Did you read it?"
"Of course, and I think Alexei knows what he's doing."
The second man replied with scorn in his voice.
"How?"
"What better way to drive the memories of his 'glorious coup de tat than by brining back the people's sports?"
"But it's barbaric!"
"Of course it is, and that's why everyone loves it. By bringing the barbarism to them, they needn't watch their televisions to see the barbarism of Alexei's armies in the Ukraine and Buchiana. It's simply a control mechanism, Peter."
"Have you no decency?"
"I'm not saying I condone it, but we damn well better not condemn it. This man is no rightful and just Emperor. He is a usurper, and what's to stop him from throwing out the constitution (Antonius's constitution at that) and disbanding the senate? I suggest we carry on about our business, and give the people their distractions."
Peter's mouth curled into an expression of disgust. He snorted, stood up, and walked off into the crowds that had gathered to read the many flyers.
