JAG Headquarters (ZNN, Norfolk Island) -- Trousinain Navy's JAG (Judge Advocate General) Corps to launch formal inquiry into a mystery involving a Trousinain Battle Group on training exercises and an unidentified Diesel Submarine.
The Secretary of the Navy announced the official investigation Tuesday.
On monday, TD (Trousinain Dominion) battle group Dover, while on training exercises in deep water approximately 240 km west south west of Norfolk Island Naval Base, made sonar and radar contact with an unidentified submersible. Naval intel reported that no TD ships were supposed to be in those waters.
After several attemps to contact the vessel, TDS Hellfire, an AEGIS Destroyer, sent one of it's Seahawk helios to investigate the vessel with its active sonar. Apparently, the SH-60s sonar had detected sounds similar to the opening of outerdoors on an attack submarine.
The class of the submarine could not be determined, but was believed to be an Akula II class nuclear submarine.
With that information, Dover Battle Group Commander gave orders for attack on the still unidentified submarine. According to a Naval report on the situation, and a statement from the skipper of the TDS Will Power, an aircraft carrier, 2 SH-60 helicopters departed from the TDS Hellfire, and dropped two Mk 50 torpedo each on the submarine.
Sonar aboard the Will Power picked up explosions, at less than one second intervals from eachother. It then detected the break-up of the hull of the sub.
The Navy has sent out a search team to the site of the incident. With the depths of the water exceeding 2 miles in the area, searchers are now using small submersibles equipt with underwater viewing cameras to evaluate the situation.
An attempt at a retrieval mission has yet to be announced, but is expected pending the outcome of the initial search.
