President Dunn of Nowhere Place resigns, replaced by Vice President Clark

Nowhere Place

Address to the nation of Nowhere Place, by ex-President John Dunn:

"People of our great country. I know that you have suffered. I know how it must feel to be the fathers, mother, brothers, sisters, friends of the men and women who died in Sinear.

No blame should be put on anyone but me for what happened. It was my fault, people of Nowhere Place, and mine alone. I do not apologize for what happened. Not because I don't feel guilty... Because no words I say can possibly ease the pain you are feeling.

I'm proud of the people who fought in Sinear. They fought hard. They fought well. They could have won. But fate proved otherwise. We must accept the fact that there are nations out there who are stronger and more advanced then we are. And until such time as we match them, it is best to stay out of their way. It is hard to take, but we must swallow our pride and face the truth. We are not invincible.

You may ask yoursleves if these deaths were in vain. I say they were not. They died fighting for freedom and justice, and I can think of no better way to die than in the service of this country, fighting for those ideals. You, too, should be proud of the loved ones you've lost. They put their lives on the line so that people who they'd never even met could stay safe and free. They were noble, good people, all.

But they are not here among us today, and that is my fault. I ask for your forgivness, and ask you to pray for the lives of those still in Sinear, caught between life and death. I am resigning my office. In my place, Vice President Clark, who you all know and love, will become your new President. Clark is, in all accounts, a better man than I. So, my people, I give you your new President. I have no doubt he will be a better leader than I ever was."

There is light applause as Artemis Clark takes the podium to be sworn in, and Dunn steps off and walks away, not looking back. The applause is not light because he is unpopular (he actually polled higher than Dunn, recently), but because of the current national situation.

"People of Nowhere Place, I know how you feel. My nephew, John, is one of those who have been lost in Sinear. However, we cannot let this tragedy stop us. We have to let it drive us. We must put our anger into our work and make this country bigger, better, and stronger. This is the greatest defeat this country has ever known. But we can't let that stop us from living. I'm going to do everything I can to get our remaining guys back from Sinear."

The crowd is silent. Clark seemed to get revved up.

"As President, I promise to strengthen our military and economy, and get rid of that damned trade deficit once and for all. We're going to improve education, to get smarter. We'll dedicate parks to the men and women who've died in the service. We will make this pain a driving one, because that's what those people would have wanted! So scrub off those frowns, Nowhere Place! I swear not to let you down~ Together we will make this country great, to honor those who died!"

There was wild cheering and clapping across the country, a beacon of hope in a dark time.

The broadcast ended.
