The Nation of Schultaria Prime, thirteen years following the devastating events of the Contact Day Massacre, has declared their manned space program "fit" for active operation. With a total expenditure of nearly 800 billion USD on the program over the previous decade, the Schultarian Space Administration (SSA) has been chided for their lack of expedience; however, the Central Directorate of Schultaria Prime maintains that this program is necessary for the future of the nation at large.

At present, the SSA has already declared a tentative launch schedule and extensive flight plan for the first mission. Exact details on the mission are still under intensive scrutiny, but it is known that the first launch is expected to take place on the thirteenth anniversary of First Contact Day.

Central Director Elliot Schultz, in a public press conference, had this to comment on the manned space initiative:

"It is not only a testament to our people's ingenuity, but of our determined resolve to complete this task despite all of the factors against us. To say no to the pursuit of knowledge and understanding runs counter to everything that our nation truly believes in. Even if this program did take longer than expected, we are better people for it.

We lost many of our best, brightest, and bravest in the pursuit of this dream too; if we were to simply abandon this program than the 9,300 lives lost in the process would have been in vain."

The first Schultarian Cosmonauts to take this great venture have also been announced in advance of this mission.

MISSION COMMANDER: AEOIFE KERNOWA

Gender: Female
Age: 28
Birthplace: Tarannu
Education: University of Schultaria Prime - Dolec [Aeronautical Engineering: PhD]
Occupation: Colonel - Schultarian Kamor Collabrai | Air Defense Division [Flight Leader]

A natural born leader, Aeoife is the youngest commissioned officer in Schultaria Prime to have ever successfully earned the title of wing commander at age 26. This, coupled with her exceptional ability as a test pilot, has made her and indispensable member of the first corps of Schultarian Cosmonauts. In addition to her active career in the Defense Forces she's also a highly active instructor and an associate professor of aeronautics for the Schultarian Defense institute in Kerga-Nassubu.

-----

FLIGHT ENGINEER: CRAIG MASSER

Gender: Male
Age: 34
Birthplace: Dolec
Education: University of Schultaria Prime - Dolec [Mechanical Engineering: PhD]
Occupation: Flight Systems Officer - Schultarian Orbital Command [Technical Advisor]

Of all the Cosmonauts currently active in the Schultarian Space Administration, none have been as active in the technological development of the program as Craig. It's often joked that his expertise can turn rocks into radio sets, but his contributions to the space program (and specifically the technology behind such systems as power generation) are very prevalent.

-----

MISSION SPECIALIST: JEN'OEH TASKER

Gender: Male
Age: 27
Birthplace: Edgen
Education: University of Schultaria Prime - Schultaria Prime [Astrophysics: PhD]
Occupation: University of Schultaria Prime - Dolec | Department of Physics [Associate Researcher ]

A highly imaginative individual constantly offering new challenges to the corps, Jen'oeh is one of the newest arrivals to the Schultarian Cosmonaut corps. However, his relative lack of experience with the Schultarian Space Administration has not been detrimental in the slightest; through his own rigorous activity schedules, he went from a relatively unknown recruit to a mission candidate in under five months.

The SSA, after extensive contingency testing and careful inspection, has finally unveiled the craft which will take the first three Schultarian Cosmonauts to the realm of orbital space. A modified Proketsan launch vehicle, dubbed the Nadiegn ("Finger of human reason" in literal Schultarian) will loft Schultaria Prime's first manned spacecraft and its crew to a stable orbit 2,600 km above the Earth's surface.

As of now, the current launch schedule remains unaltered; less than four days from now, Cosmonauts Kernowa, Masser, and Tasker will embark on a journey that has taken the Schultarian nation so long to fulfill.

Once in orbit, the three Cosmonauts will engage in numerous scientific, engineering, and diplomatic missions over the course of their 21 day flight plan. Such activities involve the utilization of highly experimental computer technology, exploring the boundaries of metallic strength in the harsh environment of hard vacuum, and serving as ambassadors of goodwill on behalf of the nation of Schultaria Prime.

At 20:04 Schultarian Centralized Time on this, the thirteenth anniversary of Schultaria Prime's First Contact Day, the rocket Nadiegn lifted off at the SSA launch pad 1D with passengers in tow. According to Schultarian Orbital Command, the launch has apparently gone without incident and that Cosmonauts Kernowa, Masser, and Tasker are in great condition and well prepared to proceed with their mission.

"It really couldn't have gone any better for us," Orrow professed to a live press conference, "The technology performed beautifully, and now we can truly say that our process of rebuilding is complete."

The spacecraft, known as the Pfencxion (translation unavailable), reached an apogee altitude of 2,608 km some twenty minutes after launch and is now in a stable medium Earth orbit. From this vantage point, they will begin a series of some thirty scientific experiments and astronomical observations over the course of the next three weeks. As of now, the three space travelers are currently adjusting to their environment of microgravity and resting in preparation for a long journey ahead of them.

Official Communiqué

We congratulate our close allies at Schultaria Prime for the landmark achievement that has just transposed. We clearly remember that senseless tragedy thirteen years ago that led to the loss of so many progressive minds and valuable research. We are pleased that this has not affect the Schultarian spatial program in the long run, nor the continued work of Schultaria scientists. Perhaps it would be possible for an observer to witness the manned space program first-hand?

Respectfully,
Prime Minister Terri Bolash

Now well into day five of their twenty-one day mission, the three Schultarian Cosmonauts are reported to be ahead of schedule in their assigned flight plan, much to the surprise of Schultarian Orbital Command. The nightly mission briefings, watched by over 1.4 Billion Schultarian and Islandian Schultarian residents, have become the single largest observed media event since the live coverage of First Contact thirteen years ago.

"It's astounding to think that three people can live and work in an environment such as pure vacuum," said a local resident of the City of Dolec, "And to think they are 2,000 kilometers above us as we speak. It's truly something else..."

The general public, fixated on the continued success of the mission, has reveled in its early successes. However, the Schultarian Space Administration's work remains far from finished. Over the course of the next sixteen days the Pfencxion, and its precious cargo, will engage in numerous orbital course alterations to test out several experimental vehicle components. In addition, the three Cosmonauts have yet to complete over twenty-two critical experiments, but as of now spirits remain exuberant.

"For the record, it was about time that we got up here," Cosmonaut Tasker replied in a live interview with the international media, "Space is truly something else; so empty, yet very fulfilling at the same time. All of us here are know how important this means to the nation, and we are not about to disappoint them just yet."

For the first time since being lofted into orbit, Cosmonauts Kernowa, Masser, and Tasker are far enough in their schedule that Schultarian Orbital Command has allowed them additional time to serve as official ambassadors of Schultaria Prime. From their vantage point in high Earth orbit, the three intrepid pioneers sent a live message of peace and brotherhood to anyone within range of their signal.

Hifex news was able to acquire a transcript of selected portions of the audio dialogue:

[Masser]

"As official representatives of the Nation of Schultaria Prime, we would like to extend our hands in friendship to everyone that's within the range of this broadcast."

[Kernowa]

"Gliding silently two thousand kilometers above the surface of this beautiful planet, we can not help but realize that we are but one race fighting for our survival when all is said and done. Looking down on the surface, the Earth hides our traces well; perhaps because we must consider that as individual nations should work together for the betterment of humanity."

[Masser]

"We wish for a bright hope and a shining future to everyone who hears our words. No limitation is too imposing to defeat the pursuit of understanding, and we wish to help further the human experience by sharing as much of our knowledge as possible."

[Tasker]

"On behalf of the Cosmonauts of the good ship Pfencxion, we bid you a fond farewell and a happy future."

Successfully completing a three minute course correction burn, the three Schultarian Cosmonauts are now assuming a new orbital path 800 km closer to Earth. This orbital maneuver will not only pass closer to the planet, but is seminal for a several experiments that the Pfencxion and its crew have yet to complete.

"The majority of the experiments involve exploring the nature of time dilation and acceleration in a variable gravity field," Professor Lodon Saika announced in a press conference late yesterday evening, "While a good portion of this research has already been achieved through robotic methods, we still have very limited data on its effects on a human passenger. Though we do have research from a variety of other space programs, it does not hurt to review and confirm research if we have the facilities."

When asked for additional information about the next few days of experimentation, the panel from the Schultarian Space Administration was hesitant to divulge a great deal of information. Of the five chief officials present at yesterday's press conference, Tomar Orrow was the only one to divulge any source of relevant information.

"We have a few other procedures we would like the Cosmonauts to perform in the next nine days. However, the SSA is only at liberty to say that the following maneuvers will be essential in future Schultarian manned space missions. Once you see the events that Cosmonauts Tasker, Kernowa, and Masser will perform, it's our hope that the Schultarian manned space program can undertake a period of very rapid development."

After some seventeen days and two major course alterations, the three Cosmonauts of the Pfencxion are now well into the last leg of their journey. Successfully ahead of schedule, the flight controllers of Schultarian Orbital Command authorized a portion of the flight plan that had been initially scrapped two months before launch. To the excitement of both the crew and eager scientists in the SSA, Cosmonaut Craig Masser engaged in a successful spacewalk for a period of 3 hours and twenty five minutes.

"It can't get much better than this," Masser replied as he left the hatch of the crew module to test his navigation abilities, "If only these cameras could do justice to what I'm seeing with my own eyes."

In addition, this walk was also a seminal event for the nation as a whole; Schultarian Flight Controllers successfully adjusted the Pfencxion's flight path to bring it close enough to inspect Schultaria Prime's first satellite probe and reactivate its systems manually. The Spaten, dormant for the last ten years, was restarted early this morning by Cosmonaut Masser and is operating under its own power. While the systems are "extensively" modified through the integration of Indran technology, the robotic probe appears to be in good operating order and has not suffered any damage.
