Invasion of Nicaragua (RL-earth claim)

Kopparbergs

(OOC: This is a claim in RL-earth for Nicaragua.)

A couple of months after the invasion of Ecuador, Kopparbergs Royal Military was prepared for another invasion. Since the invasion of Peru was cancelled due to unpredictable hard resistance, the expansion plan was changed.

Many military vessels were leaving the military ports in Machala and Esmeraldas (in Ecuador). The target was the coast of Nicaragua. Some smaller ships were going thru the Panama canal (Brandenburger class frigates and Arleigh Burke class destroyers).
The initial fleet was composed of this ships:
- 4 Nimitz carriers, 3 of them holding 60 JAS 39 Gripen and 10 Apache AH-64 each, and the last carrier has 70 Apache AH-64 (no planes).
- 8 Arizona class battleships
- 20 Iowa class cruisers
- 30 Arleigh Burke class destroyers (15 of them will be going thru the canal, their goal is the east coast of Nicaragua).
- 80 Brandenburger class frigates (50 of them will be going to the east coast).

From our air ports in Santo Domingo and Portoviejo (Ecuador) many planes will lift when the Navy is at their final locations outside Nicaragua. We have prepared 60 B52-H bombers and 80 C-5 Galaxy troop transport planes.

The Navy’s ETA is 12 (NS) hours.

General Andersson and the Supreme commander in a discussion of strategy:

“Look at this satellite photo, it clearly shows that they have a huge military base in Granada (located at the border of Lake Nicaragua).” says the Supreme commander.

“Yes, no doubt about that. What air fields should be our initial goal for take over?” replies General Andersson.

“How many does we need? I think that we should go for the large air field outside Managua and the smaller one outside León.”

“Yes, that sounds ok. Don’t think we need more than two, at least not in the first phase.”

For a couple of minutes they sat quiet and studied the maps and satellite photos of Nicaragua.

“Once we have secured the west coast, we’ll start the bombing runs at Granada. It's their greatest military installation, that's for sure, and once that’s out of the question we can begin the real invasion. But maybe we can start the occupation of Leon before we have made it in Granada? Yes, I think so.” The Supreme commander was thinking loud, it was not thought as questions for General Andersson.

The Supreme commander continues “Yes, that’s a good one. Here’s what we’ll do: First, secure the west coast, then start bombing runs at Granada, the B52’s will start from Santo Domingo and Portoviejo and will be escorted by JAS-planes from our carriers outside Nicaragua. Simultaneously with the bombing runs at Granada the take over of León will begin.”

“Yes, I think that it’s a great plane. We go for that! Nicaragua, here we come!” General Andersson was excited once again.

The Nicaraguans woke up by heavy bombings this Wednesday morning, as Kopparbergs Navy was in place outside the coast of Nicaragua. The bombs and missiles were mainly hitting military installations, but some non-military buildings were also hit.

The first strike was concentrated at León, Chinandega, Chichigalpa, El Ostional and San Juan del Sur - all of them located at the west coast. Together with Tomahawk missiles fired from battleships and cruisers, a lot of missiles were fired from JAS-planes that were continuously taking off from the carriers located near the coastline.

In the same time, the first bombing squadron from Ecuador entered Nicaraguan air space. Five B-52 bombers, each escorted by ten JAS 39 Gripen, were heading towards Granada.

Around León there were a lot of AA-installations. Before they were taken out of the game by the missiles, as many as 19 JAS-planes were shot down. The pilots are still missing.

At the east coast of Nicaragua nothing happened yet. But many military ships were lurking around there...

Congressmen Jorge Arroyo, John Kirkland and Yoltzin sat together at a table with Minister of War, Warrior-General Tlanextic. Among them was sattelite photographs and other intellegence reports of the situation in Nicaragua. To the ANL, this came as serrious news. The ANL's southern most state, Honduras, bordered Nicaragua.

"Congressmen, I tell you, we need to take a firm stance. We need to tell the nation of Kopparbergs we're paying attention to what's going on. We also need to fortify our military in Honduras to make sure we are not attacked, either in mishap or invasion. I also suggest we have some of our submarines do reconisance outside the area where their naval fleet is."

Congressman Arroyo said "By submarines, you mean our Typhoon-II's, right. I say that because they are stealth."

Warrior-General Tlanextic said "Exactly. We will also send one of our command ships on the border between our water and that of Honduras. In one of the costal cities of Honduras, I suggest we place a fleet there in case if a unfortinate accident occurs."

Uniaminously, they agreed.

OOC: I'll post stats soon.

We do have established friendly relations with the ANL, if nothing else. Also, BG RP's a more realistic three-hundred-million population, rather than the 3.2billion or so population listed in the national profile, if that even matters.)

The Igovian Soviet consul to the Aztec National League, presently one Morag of Under-Tenwick, was quick to relay Beddgelen concern over the aggression displayed by the monarchist forces transgressing against central America. Portmeirion was keen to learn of any Aztec plans to derail the regressive expansionism, with a view to rendering support. Surely Nicaragua presented any number of avenues for defiance, even if it be covert in origin?

Outwardly, the Igovian Soviet Commonwealth of Beth Gellert requested clarification of the Kopparbergs' justification for assault against the Nicaraguan people.

After 48 hours of bombings (mostly with missiles, tomahawks, etc) Kopparbergs controlled a large area (around León) from the coast and into the volcanoes (San Cristóbal, Telica, Las Pilas). One part of the plan was to take control over the large airport outside León, something that was made after a larger ground battle.

Once the airport was in Kopparbergs control, many troop transport planes (C-5 Galaxy) began to land troops there. All of the Apache AH-64’s on one of the carriers (a total of 70) landed at the airport, and the carrier went back to Ecuador to get more helicopters (will be back in 24 NS hours).

In Granada, there were large losses for the Nicaraguans. Kopparbergs also had losses, but not that large. Two B-52's were shot down, together with five JAS-planes. Three battalions parachuted around Grenada (1.500 men). Area not controlled by Kopparbergs yet, seems to be a well-defended area, exactly as we thought.

OOC:

Total forces in Nicaragua (Kopparbergs):

NAVY
- 4 Nimitz carriers, 3 of them holding 60 JAS 39 Gripen and 10 Apache AH-64 each, and the last carrier have 70 Apache AH-64 (no planes).
- 8 Arizona class battleships
- 20 Iowa class cruisers
- 30 Arleigh Burke class destroyers (15 of them at the east coast).
- 80 Brandenburger class frigates (50 of them at the east coast).

AIR FORCE
- Around 300 JAS 39 Gripen (incl the ones at the carriers)
- Around 60 B-52H (Not many of the in use)
- Around 80 C-5 Galaxy, troop transport
- Around 100 Apache AH-64 (will be increased)
- Around 30 MH-47E Special Chinook

ARMY
- 8 armies, 8.000 men each, total 64.000 men
- 200 M1A2 Abrahams (flew in by C-5 Galaxies, located in the area around León).

Kopparbergs troops have made big land winnings today. Almost the whole west coast is under Kopparbergs control. The military resistance in and around Granada is dealt with, and the southern front and the Granada fronts have joined into one front. The northern front has moved south, towards Managua, which is the next goal for both of the fronts. We calculate that when we get the control over Managua the rest of the country will fall. Around 70-80 percent of the people living in Nicaragua live in the western part.

Today’s tactic was a totally united front moving with full speed ahead. In the air, JAS-planes were firing missiles at military targets, Apache AH-64 helicopters was shooting at Nicaraguan troops and military installations. In the same time a large front of tanks were moving forward. This tactic generates larger losses than necessary, but it makes faster progress.

Total losses today: 19 JAS-planes, 13 Abrahams, 12 Apaches, 1 C-5 Galaxy, around 9.000 men.

During the night the troops has advanced, the capital Managua is now surrounded by Kopparbergs troops. In the air there are many JAS-planes and Apaches. Heavy fighting began inside the capital. But to our surprise there were not as many Nicaraguan troops as expected.
After 14 hours of battle in and around the capital, Managua was in Kopparbergs hands. The government of Nicaragua was arrested for breaking human rights, and will be prosecuted in Quito, Ecuador.
A couple of hours after the government were arrested, a nationwide TV-sending was broadcasted:

“This is KNN, Kopparbergs Nation News. Tonight Kopparbergs has arrested the government of Nicaragua. This will mark the end of many years of breaking human rights. The Nicaraguans will be a free people. Kopparbergs has taken control of Nicaragua and announces big changes in the way the country will be ruled. No more dictatorship! If you think that you have had a great life the past years, then you should be sad about this. But if you think that life can be more fun, think it’s nice to have enough food for the day, want to have money so you can buy things – then this is the beginning of the new way of living in Nicaragua! Tomorrow will be a great day for Nicaragua!”

The battle for Managua was over. Now the rest of the country should be taken, but we don’t expect any large resistance since we now have the capital. The remaining Nicaraguan military forces have no orders to follow. They were divided.

Meanwhile...
(IN HONDURAN WATERS)

Three of the ANL's flagship submarines, the Typhoon-II Stleath Attack Submarines sat docked in Laguna Caratasca, a large lagoon several miles away from Nicaraguan waters. The subs were fully manned and prepaired for their nighttime launch and their covert mission.

In the SAS Urqiudez...

A lower level Admiral sat at the command chair of the submarine. Since it was operating at a lower power level, the only light was the light emmitnating from the counsels and buttons and the dim red emergancy lights. He was waiting for an order from ANL Central Command to be sent. Once the order was recived, the three subs would be on their way.

Disturbing the silence, a dot matrix printer began beeping and printing out information. Once it was done, he walked over to the printer and began to read it:
-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
ATTN: Sub-Admiral Coyotepan
M I S S I O N '04-223/S(ecret):

Your mission is to inflitrate Nicuragan waters and attepmt to intersept the radio frequencies of Kopparberg's fleet. RECORD EVERYTHING and report back to Laguna Caratasca when we order you back.

M I S S I O N P A R A M E T E R S:
-Use your catipilar/silent water propulsion drives at all times. You must not be detected!
-If you are detected, you are to leave the area at maximum speed and elude your persuiters. Do not fire upon Kopparbergs fleet. Do not fire back if you are attacked.

G O O D L U C K!

TRANSMISSION END

With that, the admiral walked to his chair and grabbed the black leather uniform coat on the back of it, put it on and sat down. He then opened up a panel on his chair and pressed an button.

Loudly, a Klaxon sounded. He grabbed a microphone and said "All crew members, report to your posts. We are going to undertake a mission. Report to your posts immediatly!"

The dark, cool and silent chambers where the crew bunks were immediatly was flooded with the sound of the Klaxons and lights came on at full brightness. Immediatly, all the Aztec sailors got out of their bunks, got out of bed and put on their jumpsuit like uniforms. Within minutes, the bunks were empty and orderly.

In about 5 minutes, the main power came online and the dim red glow of the emergancy lights was replaced with normal, white light. Systems hummed, crew members chattered and gave status reports and the submarines quickly came to life. In about 10 minutes, the last submarine was ready...

"Alright, take us under, catipillar drives online as soon as we are submerged." Ordered the Admiral.
Kopparbergs

The troop movement speeded up significantly when the capital was fallen. The Nicaraguan army was without orders to follow. Of course they knew that the right thing was to stop the invaders, but a large portion of the nation was already lost, and they had had great losses. And some of them (or many?) thought that it should be a great relief to get rid of the bastards in the Nicaraguan government.
Rumours were spread that the government was arrested (which were true), and that soldiers making resistance against Kopparbergs forces will be taken as POW’s and later prosecuted (for crime against human rights). Kopparbergs propaganda-machinery was at full speed. The soldiers that gave up were taken care of in a good way.

General Andersson (responsible for the campaign in Nicaragua) on the satellite-phone with the Supreme commander (in Ecuador):

“Yes, it’s going very well. Since we took Managua the military resistance is almost gone.” says Andersson.

“Glad to hear that. How long will it take to have control over the whole country?” replies the Supreme Commander.

“Well, it depends on the terrain mostly. We have some problems in the mountains, we need more helicopters. But roughly about 5 days I suppose.”

“OK. And if I send you two more Rotary wing carriers (Charles de Gaulle) with a total of 116 Apaches? Would it help speeding it up even more?”. The Supreme commander’s voice sounded like he was in a hurry.

“Yes, of course it will help. I think we can cut of a day or two then. But that relies on the assuming that we don’t meet any hard resistance.”

“OK, sounds good enough. I'll send the 3rd Rotary Wing Battlegroup to the west coast of Nicaragua.”

...In Nicaraguan waters...

The SAS Urquidez and the two other Typhoon-II class submarines have finally entered Nicaraguan waters. Although still hundreds of miles away from the Kopparbergsian fleet, the submarines prepair to attempt to pick up any transmissions.

The Admiral in the Urquidez looks at a clip board and reads all the information on it. All the adjustments to the submarines' radio systems and sensor systems are complete, and the ship appears to be ready to begin scanning signals. Although far from the fleet, they are in close proximity to the shore (not too close, though.)

The admiral looked forward and pressed the intercom button on his arm rest's panel, "All hands, prepair for partial surfacing."

The helmsman put in values and digits into the controls of the submarine and grabbed the controls. He awaited the order.

"Commence."

The three submarines raised from their submerged depths in the water. In a couple of minutes, the Urquidez's crow's nest poked through the top of the water and the radio attenias raised aboved the water.

The Admiral ordered, "Alright, activate the system, see if we pick up anything. Since our sensors will be offline as long as our radio interseption system is up, tell the other subs to be on the look out for any boats."
