Speculation was running rampant in the chamber:
"Is he gay?" asked one of the Royals.
"I heard he's decided to marry his cousin, Lady Jessica." said a member of the House of Peoples.
"We'll find out soon enough" said another member of the House of Peoples. "Maybe this has nothing to do with our marriage demand, maybe he has called a joint session to deal with the war in Euroslavia."

Just then, King 'Lude entered the chamber with with Harriet on his arm. She was absolutely stunning in her black skirt, appropriately cut just above the knee and her blouse of the bright red, green, yellow, blue and white of the Mauiwowee flag. He led her to her traditionally reserved seat in the front row with the other ambassadors and dignataries and took the podium. Looking out at the assembled legislature, the governors and the justices of the Supreme Court, King 'Lude spoke - "Thank you Ladies and Gentlemen for being here today. I have an important message I want to deliver to the people, but first, I want to remind you and the people who we are" At that the Mauiwowee Flag raised behind the King, he turned, saluted, and started the pledge, the legislature immediately joined in:

I pledge alligience, to the flag, of the Kingdom of Mauiwowee. And to the unity for which it stands, many peoples, under providence, united for the good of all with liberty, justice and freedom guaranteed to every man

The music flared up then and the National Anthem of Mauiwowee was sung, (A song that recalled the discovery of mind expansion by the "Red Bud Queen", Alice I over 300 years ago) as was the custom. (OOC: With apologies to and to the tune of "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane)

One hit makes you larger
And one hit makes you small.
And the hits that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all.
Go ask Queen Alice,
When she's ten feet tall

And if you go off chasing ferrets,
And you know you're going to fall,
Tell 'em a hashish smoking volcano
Has given you the call.
Call Queen Alice,
When she was just small.

When men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go,
And you've just had volcanic mushrooms
And your mind is moving low,
Go ask Alice,
I think she'll know.

When logic and proportion,
Have fallen sloppy dead,
And the White Knights are talking backwards,
And our Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the shaman said:
"Feed your head
Feed your head
Feed your head"

Harriet made it conspicuous that she was joining in the pledge and the national anthem to all those around her, and more than one TV camera caught and broadcast the image of her saluting the flag and singing the anthem; images that after the King's announcement and her speech, were broadcast around the kingdom over and over.

After the singing the assembly seated themselves to hear what the King had to say:

"My fellow Mauiwoweans, 2 days ago I received a letter signed by the Governors of our great states, the President of the House of Peoples, the Chamberlain of the House of Royals and the Chief Justice of our Supreme Court. In that letter they informed me that they and the people of Mauiwowee desired that I choose a bride, produce a natural heir to the throne and recognize my obligation to the future of Mauiwowee." :::applause:::

"At first, I was upset and angry, but upon reflection I realized you and the people of Mauiwowee were entitled to what was asked of me in that letter. We have a great nation here and under my continued leadership, I expect it to become even greater"
:::applause:::
"But great in the here and now does not mean great in the future. So, with great trepidation and thought, I prepared a royal proclomation to seek out applications for marriage. "
::: concerned 'mmmmmmssss' in the congregation:::
"However, before issuing the proclomation, I sent it out for review by a person trusted by me. That person, upon review of the proclomation came to see me and urged me not to issue it because she was willing to become my bride."
:::exicted murmurs rippled through the crowd with whispered comments from legislators to those sitting next to them:::
"I knew, and in fact had known, for quite some time this woman was the right person to be our queen, I had just been afraid to act. I want to thank you for sending the letter that goaded me to action. I therefore wish to announce to you and the people of Mauiwowee that I have become engaged and a royal wedding and holiday will take place in the near future as soon as I set a date. Please, ladies and gentelmen, welcome your queen to be."

:::with that, King 'Lude gestured and Harriet Levine stood and walked up on stage in her most stately manner. Secretly she was terrified, but she knew what to do. She had rehearsed it several times with King 'Lude and knew she could carry it off. She approached King 'Lude and they kissed, a kiss that was televised and rebroadcast throughout the kingdom, even after their deaths in the years ahead. King 'Lude sat down and Harriet took to the podium and began to speak to the astonished assembly.:::

ooc: The Red Queen did not say 'off with her head,' that was the Queen of Hearts. White Rabbit concerns Alice in wonderland and *cough*drugs*cough* whereas you've mixed it up with through the looking glass. Otherwise you've got to say very clever.

OOC: come on, technical attacks on Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane and my adaptation of their lyrics? Just recall they and we were stoned when the song was written and our nation created. :p Thanks for thinking the idea clever though. I thought a long time about what would be the appropriate national anthem for my country. Note also the explanation, the "red queen" in the national anthem is Mauiwowee Queen Alice the "Red Bud Queen." Also, couldn't say that the queen of hearts was a red queen, as opposed to the queen of spades or clubs who would be black queens? Just an aside. Now, we return you to our regularly scheduled marriage announcement. :)

Harriet walked toward the podium to give her speech. As nervous as she was inside, she was able to project a calm that befit someone with years of public speaking experience, not someone who was about to give one of the first public speeches of her life.

With the afterglow of the kiss heard 'round the kingdom still warming her heart and a smile radiating from her face, she adjusted the microphone to her mouth and began to speak.

"Thank you and good day. I am honored to address you as the consort-to-be of King 'Lude.

"I am sure some of you are asking yourself questions about why I am doing this as the current ambassador to this great country from Sarzonia. I have the blessing of the Sarzonian Parliament and President Mike Sarzo to marry the man I love and to serve the people I love. Yes, I love this man. And I love Mauiwowee."

**points to King 'Lude as the crowd begins to cheer wildly. The cheers get even louder when she gestures out to the crowd.**

"Being the Queen is an incredible responsibility. It is a challenge that I believe I am ready for and I will serve as your queen with every bit of the dedication I have shown in my role as Ambassador.

"Some of you may have seen that I already have sworn my allegiance to the Mauiwowee flag and have sung her national anthem. I do so willingly and aware of the responsibilities that being a citizen of this great country entail. With that, I wish you all Godspeed."

The crowd applauded as Harriet took the arm of King 'Lude. As nervous as she was making the speech, she felt safe and secure on his arm.

OOC: again, the song is adapted and modified from the original. note the original is called "white rabbit" and doesn't mention ferrets either (ferrets are Mauiwowee's national animal). One "hit" references the primary use of our primary crop (think about it, what is "Maui Wowee?"). Finally the references to the red queen refer to Mauiwowee's "red bud queen, Alice" of over 300 years ago who discovered the psychoactive properties of marijuana, various mushrooms and other natural drugs. She introduced the people of Mauiwowee to the idea of "mind expansion" and the positive effects on everyday life that can occur as the result of mind expansion and contemplative thought. OK, anyone else need to tell me how I got the words or references to Lewis Carroll's stories wrong? Oh and the song was by Jefferson Airplane and sung by Grace Slick and not by the "beetles" (who ever they are).

In a small meeting room on Blunt Island, the governors of Blunt Island, Bhang Island, 6 members of the House of Royals and 12 members of the House of Peoples held a clandestine meeting.

"Dammit, she's not even a native" Said Governor Marks "She can say the pledge and sing the national anthem all she freakin' wants, she'll not be my queen!"

"I agree govnernor" said one of the members of the House of Royals, but what should we do? Most of the people like her. You heard the applause in the joint meeting today."

"I know, but they're just sheep. The real citizens will protest and I intend to help them do so."

"Let us know what you need." spoke a member of the House of Peoples.

"Well we for one will be filing a legal challenge" said the governor of Bhang Island.

"Good" continued Governor Marks. "Keep the king tied up in court, he won't notice the real resistance brewing until it is too late."

Harriet assumed a very thoughtful appearance. In this case, part of the reason for it was to hide her outrage at the government officials' attempts to block the wedding to the man she loved.

"I think we'll have to make our case to the people," she said. "If we can show the governors and the House members that the people want this, that should make it very hard for them to say no. We're going to have to appeal to our average citizens to try to set the record straight on what they want.

"Or, you could always hold a meeting with them and use that as a chance to make your case. If the people see that you're being reasonable about addressing the concerns of those who are against this, we can seize the PR advantage by painting them as being unreasonable louts who ignore the will of the people for their own political gain."

Harriet smiled slightly. An aide walked in with a piece of paper. The paper was an announcement of Sarzonia's intentions upon the cornonation of Harriet as Queen.

"On another note, I just got word that the Sarzonian Parliament and President Sarzo have asked if they could nominate Jordan Diehl as ambassador to Mauiwowee upon my ascention. They've approved it, and it would then be up to you to ratify it."

Harriet nodded. At least one thing went according to plan.

OOC: Sorry, but yes you are, the song was written in 1966 by Grace Slick, lead singer for the San Francisco based band, "Jefferson Airplane." It was relased on their 1967 album "Surrealistic Pillow" To quote:

Slick joined Jefferson Airplane in mid-October 1966, and by the end of the month was with them in the recording studio. She brought with her two songs from the Great Society repertoire: the rock tune "Somebody to Love," written by her brother-in-law Darby Slick, the Great Society's guitarist, and her own composition, the ballad "White Rabbit," set to a bolero tempo, which used imagery from Alice in Wonderland to discuss the impact of psychedelic drugs. Both songs were recorded for Jefferson Airplane's second album, Surrealistic Pillow.

I suggest you viist the quoted web site to see for yourself. If you still don't believe, I suggest you do a nice google search and report back to us on any documentation you can find which refutes my and Sarzonia's claim. Or, maybe, just learn that an admission that you were wrong about something doesn't hurt on occassion.

"and we're live in 3-2-1" The red light on the camera camera came out and the picture of King 'Lude was broadcast to the people of Mauiwowee.

"My fellow citizens, as you have no doubt heard by now, certain people in our government have filed a petition with the Supreme Court in an attempt to block my marriage to Ms. Harriet Levine, former ambassador from Sarzonia" ::: 2nd Pause and cut-way to photo of Harriet Levine ::: "I come before you tonight to ask that you please let your representatives and governors know how you feel on this matter. As your king I have the interests of you, my royal subjects at heart. Through my leadership, we - no, you, the people, have united this island kingdom and made it an economic powerhouse, adopted a constitution and ensured freedom for yourselves and your children's children. It is now time to take the next step - joining the global community fully. My marriage to Ms. Levine will unite 2 countries; Mauiwowee and Sarzonia, in more ways than one. The potential political benefits through associations with other countries can't be underestimated and the benefit to our navy and naval construction contracts stands to be enormous and create thousands of jobs and boost our economy. However, even more important, your future queen loves this land, its people and me, your king - and I love her. We will produce a natural heir to the throne who can continue in our footsteps and further secure our peace and freedom. I would never deny you the right to marry the person you love. I ask you, is it right to deny your king the same privilege? You are my people, I am your king, I ask you now, let everyone know you want Harriet Levine to be your Queen.
Thank you, and may Ganja bestow blessed enlightenment to your thoughts"

"and we're clear" said the director.

"So, Harriet, what do you think? OK? Oh, and by the way, tell president Sarzo that Jordan is approved as the new ambassador without hesitation on one condition."

"OH? and what's that?" said Harriet.

ooc: You might be thinking of Blackbird by the Beatles, or maybe Lucy in the sky. In fact quite a few Beatles songs have drug references.

Oh,I know that, but those are very different songs.

OOC: And now we return you to our regularly scheduled thread

:::grinning broadly::: "that he arrive in time for the wedding and service as a groomsman."

"I will be glad to notify President Sarzo of your 'condition,'" Harriet said, beaming. "I doubt that will be a problem."

Harriet gazed lovingly into King 'Lude's eyes and gave him a slow kiss that seared with passion. She knew it wouldn't be a problem. Knowing Sarzo, he'd have Diehl on the next plane to Mauiwowee.

When she finally got the chance to contact Sarzo, she told him of the condition.

"Well, I don't think anyone here's going to object," Sarzo said, the tone of his voice clearly a lighthearted one.

"I'll have Jordan on the next plane out."

"I'm sure King 'Lude will be very pleased to hear that."

"I'm delighted to help," Sarzo said.

Within eight hours, Diehl was aboard Sarzonia Five and the jet took off on its journey to Bud City.

Speaking to the king and Harriet, Ann Skalees, chief legal counsel to the king said: "Sire, I wouldn't worry about the legal challenge. The Constitution is clear. You have complete discretion to name the heir to the throne so long as he or she is a native born Mauiwoweean. There is nothing here though that prohibits your marriage to whomever you please. Ms. Levine, this means you cannot be the succesor to king Lude on the throne, but if you have children, they can."

"Good" said the king "I thought that was the way it was set up. I'm sorry you can't rule in my 'stead darling, but a child of ours can. Counselor Skalees, what about making Harriet the royal guardian of a minor designee to the throne?"

"I don't see where that is prohibited either sire, but I need to do a little more research on that. However, even if permitted, I don't know that it would be a good idea. I would also advise that Ms. Levine take the naturlization test and become an actual, naturalized citizen of Mauiwowee the way normal immigrants do, rather than just be 'declared' one by his majesty."

"OK, I like that idea. Harriet, I assume you're up to it. Don't worry, unless President Sarzo objects you can have dual citizenship with Mauiwowee and Sarzonia, we do the dual citizenship thing all the time. Dammit! These people sent me an official letter asking I take a bride and produce an heir. Now, when I've done as the asked, they try to stop it. What the hell do they want?"

"They want a natural born bride and heir" said Ms. Skalees.

"You're convinced we'll win the legal battle?" said the king

"Without a doubt" said Skalees. "just in case you didn't note it, the chief justice of the Supreme Court was one of the people clapping the hardest when you announced your engagement to Ms. Levine."

"OK Ann, thank you. Go do your job. We're putting our faith in you."

With that, Ann Skalees left the room. Turning to Harriet king Lude said:

"Don't worry honey, if Ann says we'll win in the courts, then we will. She is the greatest legal mind in the islands, without doubt. She's also "hooked in" to the attorney network. She can make things happen with just a few calls to a few judges and lawyers. My worry is the people of Blunt and Bhang island and their governors. They were the last to sign off on the Constitution and they did so reluctantly. The polls show since our appearance on TV last night, only 48% of Blunt Island natives and 52% of Bhang Island natives approve of our marriage. That's up from the day before, but the other islands are at a 63% approval rate and above. I worry about the Blunt Islander's particularly, they're pretty rad . . . "

Just then, the bomb went off.

OOC: told ya' gonna make it rad . . . ical :) Anyone want to support the dissenters and soon to be seccesionists? Just post here or TG me. I'll start a new thread soon to play out a nice little rebellion (which we will of course crush, but has the potential for some nice RPing before that time.)
