Aztec Lands

After many secret test flights, a new nation has put people in space with their own rockets: the Aztec Lands.
The pilot of "Quetzalcoatl I", ALAF piliot Minor Wing Commander Tzilli Texcoco, rode a Victory 1-3a rocket to space, but did not enter orbit pattern due to technical difficulties.
"It was amazing." said Wc(m). Texcoco rapidly before he was escorted away for a medical exam and a debriefing.
Emperor Obsidian-Vulture spoke for 45 minutes to a cheering crowd in the capital city, Sidewinder City, on the Temple of the Sun, during a beautiful sunset:
"We have done it. Scales, toil, and the gods have led us to victory. We now take our rightful place in the heavens." he said.
Human sacrifices occured that day, the sacrifical hearts being offered to Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec god of wind. The number of sacrifices was 2,000. 10,000 human rights protestors marched down Main Street bearing anti-sacrifice signs.
"I, and I believe the rest of us agree, that it is great that we are in the cosmos. However, we must stop the killings of celebration." said End the Sacrifices president Zolli Tzlan.
The protest was peaceful, but police were on scene to ensure that nothing did go wrong.
On a related note, things *did* go wrong at the newly-opened New Texcoco Nuclear Power Plant. 2,000 angry Earth Liberation Front protestors clashed with riot police, leading to around 500 arrests and fifteen protestors dead as they scaled the plant fences, a capital offense by law.
