The system of Vardias had only one inhabited planet, the planet of Zagram. Recently the peoples of this world had been bombarded with messages, from space, from their nearest galactic neighbors in the system of Arisse. Everywhere communications, radio, satellite, television were being bombarded by a single message.
"People of Zagram, The Autarch in his infinite wisdom has added your planet and solar system to the CommonWealth of The Navigators. Shortly the forces of The Autarch's legions will arrive. Do not resist, the Guidance of The Autarch will benefit all.
All Hail The Autarch, All Hail the Varangian Guard!"
The message was repeated over and over again, the Zagramites were unable to block the signals.
The leaders of the most powerful nations on the planet gathered to discuss the message, their own rudimentary space ships and satellites were unable to confirm life in other systems or on other planets. The possibility of a hoax was raised, or deception by one of the nations present to bring them greater power through the confusion.
In the chamber where the delegates argued, a corner began to glow, a globe of light appeared and expanded and then flashed, where it had been stood ten armoured men, their iridescent metallic armour and cloaks flashed as they raised their rifle like weapond and fired streams of needle thin projectiles that chased the delegates as they ran. Within an hour the heavily guarded conference center had been cleared, cleared by ten of The Autarch's Huscarls.
Around the planet ships began to arrive, bulky transports carrying millions of Thilite Marines. Showers of drop-ships peppered the globe as the savage Thilites commenced wholesale slaughter and murder of any that attempted to resist, their powerful rail-guns chewing apart armour and vehicles. They were aided by the Varangain Guard. Only five Varangain Guard arrived, flying down to the planet surface unaided by ships or transports, scorching enemy formations by breathing fire , acid or poison in funnel like clouds, their swords and axes cleaved through concrete walls to get at the commanders within and they moved faster than a man could blink.
Terrifying Constructs, giant robots, roamed among the Thilites breaking any determined resistance, hundreds of Huscarls followed up the original ten, using their devices to 'fold' through space and time to appear where ever they pleased.
Within days the planet was fractured, many actually aided The Autarch's forces, desperate to strike a bargain with the powerful invaders. Other fought bravely against the impossible odds.
Members of the Guilds of Engineers and Masons began arriving to build fortresses and palaces for The Autarch's Varangian Governor and his forces.
The Planet of Zagram was devastated, barely having taken it's first steps to reach out to the universe.

The Lagpunkt on the planet Neron in the system of Arisse, throne of The Autarch.
The Autarch's voice boomed through the chambers of the Lagpunkt Palace as he consulted with his top Generals and advisors.
"Vodalus, the raw materials needed have been found in this system confirming the scans? he queried
Vodalus the Dragon nodded "Yes master. Several of the planets are rich in ores that we need to construct viridium steel and other materials. The resistance of the natives is ongoing, but futile. Their technology is no match for yours."
The Autarch nodded "Superb. Do not kill them all, we need workers to extract the raw materials, have your Governor give them what they need to be productive. Give them autonomy if it helps their morale and production. Show them the benefits of my rule."
Vodalus nodded "Yes Master."
Abatos, Warlord of the Thilites chimed in " Our casualties have been well below 1 percent. The system will be ours in a matter of weeks. There is nothing that can stop your forces Master."
The Autarch nodded again, pleased "Excellent, Excellent."
