AN now building underwater nuclear/toxic waste sites using Law of the Sea loophole

Axis Nova

Each storage facility is in the territorial waters of a UN nation, thanks to Law of the Sea.

And on top of that, we're selling space in each site for any nation that wishes to deposit their 'undesireable' industrial and nuclear byproducts. :)

Each facility will consist of an array of hexagon-shaped concrete storage cells, each capable of holding 100 tons of waste. The parts will be airlifted in and dropped into the water, then assembled by our workers. Containment breach prevention measures will be non-existant so that we may cut costs-- we'll just hope no one drops a depth charge or unseals the caps.

While this may at first glance appear to violate "Oceanic Waste Dumping", we believe this applies to just dumping the waste overboard in barrels and not putting it in a secure storage facility such as we are constructing. As "Oceanic Waste Dumping" does not specify, we shall insist on the above definition as the proper one if pressed.

None caused by us. The design is simplicity itself-- barrels and crates of waste are placed in the storage cells, a concrete plug is stuck in, and a steel plate is welded on top. :)

We'll let the eco-freak nations worry about monitoring for leakages. ;)

Chellis, if you're in the UN, you really have no choice in the matter. Check the other thread I made concerning nuke silos :)

OOC: stirring up trouble again.... :p

We are a UN member, but we feel that this most definitly constitutes "Oceanic Waste Dumping." You are taking toxic and nuclear fuel and depositing in the Ocean, albeit in concrete, but by putting concrete blocks on our seafloor you are disrupting the fragile eco-system that resides their. Also, since you refuse to take any protective measures against the leakage of waste it could very well turn into a ecological diaster for our nation.

There-fore any Axis Nova ship that comes into out territorial waters and begins to dump toxic or nuclear waste will be captured and all nuclear and toxic waste aboard the ships will be shot back at Axis Nova in an ICBM. That is all.

All Axis Nova ships are banned from entering Greece's waters. If Axis Nova ships are caught the crew will be killed in public and we will take the ships and sell them to companies.

Ah, but "Dumping" is not defined in the relevant resolution. If this was a simple dump, then it would be a pile of barrels on the ocean floor instead of this concrete facility.

How's this? If you don't want us to put anything in the storage cells in the facility in your territory, you may choose to purchase them and keep them empty. That way, everyone wins. :)

*Chuckles at the stupidity of the UN* Corruption... that's what the UN is... a corrupt world government... why be run by a corrupt world government when you can be free to make your own judgements? I've never been in the UN, those being some of the reasons...

That used to be my opinion, but "Law of the Sea" was too good an opportunity to pass up. The possibilities are limitless!

Perhaps for Axis Nova's next business venture, we'll look into underwater breeder reactors.

Or perhaps underwater prisons. We'll surely think of something.

Coordinator Achilles Brown looks at the message from Axis Nova and crumples it up in disgust, he responds quickly

How about this, if your ships enter our territorial waters they will be captured, their crews tortured and killed, and then the ships will be sent back to your nation where we dump their contents into international water directly adjoining your nation so they seep into your territorial water and wipe out every living thing in the ocean around your nation.

Well, well. Apparently someone doesn't realize that they have to comply with ALL UN resolutions. Feel free to ask one of the mods if you don't believe I can get away with this :)

Of course, you could also leave the UN, in which case I would have no more interest in your country.

We do not dispute that we have to comply with all UN resolutions, what we do disagree with is the interpretation of the "Dumping" part of the resolution. Since it was not defined in the resolution it is open to interpretation, and our interpretation is at odds with yours. In our eyes you are over-stepping the bounds of the resolution which is why we have threatend the afore-mentioned course of action.

Excuse me Axis Nova, but I am searching through the Law of the Sea and cannot find anything that would allow you to do such a thing, all I see is:
3. That all nations shall have in or above international waters, unless in a Maritime Preservation Zone:
d) Freedom to lay cables, pipelines and underwater installations, unless in a Maritime Preservation Zone
Thus, from how I am reading this, you only have the freedom to create these installations in international waters, and not territorial waters of UN Nations.
I may very well be mistaken, if I am, can you please point out to me where I am wrong?

A simple $20,000 per year per cell will suffice. Well within the means of even the poorest of nations :)

Sure they do. People can be kicked out of the UN for not complying with UN resolutions, which is why I'm even bothering with this whole nuke silo and toxic/nuclear waste hoohah. I figure if I make a big enough annoyance of myself using the Law of the Sea loophole, dozens of people will flock to get it repealed.

Axis Nova,
You are yet to answer my inquiry above, please let me know what "loophole" it is that you are using, as I can see none that would allow you to construct these in territorial waters.

The United States of Wolf America are droping man-eating great white sharks in Axis Nova water. Plus we are building a under water fence to made sure the sharks stay in your waters. Have fun.

OOC: It is not funny anymore, so stop.
