Invasion of Peru and Ecuador (incl. Galapagos Islands). HP RL claim.

OOC: This is a semi-closed role play for reference to HP’s RL Claims as no one owns Peru and Ecuador (incl. the Galapagos Islands).
Post here or send me a TG if you think that my claim is unfair. Please do not post here to tell me that you own one of these countries in another Earth...

IC:

The government of Kingdom of Kopparbergs ordered the military to take control over the capitals of Peru and Ecuador. The royal navy and the royal air force were ready for this action since the preparations for this was begun a couple of months ago.

Four Nimitz class carriers were outside the Peru coastline, two carriers were positioned outside Ecuador and one carrier were at the Galapagos Islands. Together with the carriers there were many other military vessels such as Arizona class battleships (11), Iowa class cruisers (22), Arleigh Burke class Destroyers (32) and Brandenburger class frigates (86). Behind the navy were many semi-military vessels that were transporting the Royal Army.

The first target was the Galapagos Islands that should be the main base during the beginning of the operation. There were no resistance met on the islands. In two days the whole group of Galapagos Islands were controlled by Kopparbergs. At the airports many Kopparbergs planes (JAS 39 Gripen, F/A-18 Hornet, C5-Galaxy, B52-H, E-3C Sentry, KC-135 Fueling, S3-B Viking, Apaches and Chinooks) began to land.

As the Islands were under control and the bases were ready, the main operation was about to start. Thousands of marines entered the capital of Peru – Lima. At the same time the air force landed in Quito, Ecuador.

Like the Kopparbergs Intelligence Agency has reported, there were small military resistance in both Ecuador and Peru. It was an easy move to secure the capitals – both Lima and Quito was now in Kopparbergs control. The small governments retreated immediately when Kopparbergs showed what was going on. Both governments were given an ultimatum:

Kopparbergs should be given the control over the whole nation of Peru/Ecuador. Otherwise we will start a full scale war and take the country by violence. If you retreat without fight you will get this:
- you will be granted amnesty and will not be charged for breaking laws of human rights
- we promise (for what that’s worth for you?) that the inhabitants will not be shot down by our army
- all of the inhabitants will get a great boost in life quality
- our military power will protect your country from evil invaders
If you NOT retreat you will get this:
- A full scale war with the powerful nation of Kopparbergs
- Many million human lives lost in a meaningless war that we will win anyway
- All members of the government will be prosecuted for breaking the laws of human rights
- Propaganda-TV that will turn the population against you and your government. We already have control over the Television.

OOC: To be continued…

When the governments had signed the papers that said that the nations of Peru and Ecuador now was controlled by Kopparbergs, a television broadcast began over the two nations:

“You are watching KNN, Kopparbergs Nation News.
Today the governments in Peru and Ecuador resigned. The presidents of Peru and Ecuador has sent out a statement where they tell that the control of the nations is handed over to Kopparbergs. From now on this two nations is a part of the Kingdom of Kopparbergs. The presidents tells that they don’t want the inhabitants to fight against Kopparbergs. Kopparbergs already controls all the necessary public parts of the capitals, and Kopparbergs spokesman says that the standard of living will be highly increased for everyone. This is the end of the dictatorships of Peru and Ecuador. This is the start of a new free era! The previous governments of Peru and Ecuador may be prosecuted for breaking the laws of human rights. The King of Kopparbergs, Carl Gustaf XX, welcomes the people of Ecuador and Peru to the Kingdom!”

"Did you get a response from Mikalgard yet?"

Carrol Veracruz nodded. "Yes sir, SSIN message is already on your console."

Captain Gregor Austenhalder sat down at his desk console and called up the message traffic. He skimmed quickly through the text of the response to his FLASH message the day before.

The Captain shook his head and transmitted the acknowledgement, then keyed in a series of orders to the Base Operations Officer. Several hundred personnel and aircraft would soon arriving, and the Base Staff needed to get ready. Austenhalder hoped it wouldn't come to war. The Captain was a tidy man, and War was a messy business.

General Andersson is in command for the operations in Peru and Ecuador. Lieutenant Eriksson is his “right hand” (OOC: both of them are known from the Estonia war we fought together with Nireva).

Eriksson speaks to Andersson as they are about to write the daily report for the Supreme Commander:

“Okay, this is going very well… What should we say in the report to the Supreme commander?”

“We’ll tell the truth, of course: Today it has been a good day. All of the necessary equipment has arrived (and troops are still landing here all the time). We have control over both Lima and Quito. The former governments of Peru and Ecuador is under arrest on board at M/S Royal Merke. Very little resistance is met all over the nations. We had a bigger fight in the city of Plura in Peru (near the border of Ecuador), we lost 2.000 men there.”

“Okay, I’ve written it down. Should I transmit the message?”

“No, wait. We must ask if we should move more troops from Galapagos Islands to the main lands. The islands were only thought of being the main base in the beginning of the operation. Now they are of minor importance, and we don’t need so many troops there.”

“That’s added! Send?”

“Yes, transmit it now.”

OOC: Kopparbergs do not know of TEO’s movement yet IC.

General Andersson on the phone with the Supreme commander:

“Yes, all is going well. We’re following the plan.”

“How about the other cities? Do we control all of them?”

“Yes, we have control over Lima/Callao, Arequipa, Trujillo and Chiclayo in Peru. In Ecuador we have control over Guayaquil and Quito as well as many other smaller cities.”

“Okay, that sounds good. How about the resistance from the people?”

“Not much. As we expected they’re glad to get rid of the dictators in the governments. And our propaganda-TV is going very well…”

"Admiral, SSIN has confirmations from the entire Task Force. We're ready to roll."

Admiral Esteban Cortez looked up from the display in Flag Plot and nodded to the captain of Stalingrad. "Very well, Captain. Tell 'em to execute Diamond Four, and get General Athens on RTV for me, please."

Captain Mikel Kovaros grinned broadly. "Yes, sir." He turned to the Fleet SSIN operator. "You heard the Admiral. Get 'em moving."

He turned back to look at the display. Cortez had devised a fairly straightforward plan to wrest the Galapagos free from the Kopparberg troops currently in place, and he had plenty of muscle to make it work. Four carriers, six battleships, 13 cruisers, a herd of support vessels, a somewhat larger herd of amphibious assault ships, and swarms of destroyers and corvettes began their intricate ballet across a ten by forty kilometer swath of ocean. The entire mass of ships began the north by northeastward voyage at 30 knots.

A chime on the SSIN display relayed radar data from the corvette Charon, who had picked up the flight of BF-6R Subotai reconnaissance planes heading for the target area. The recon birds would reach effective reconnaissance range in less than an hour. Safe from all but the most sophisticated SAMs and interceptors at their 40,000 meter altitude, they would relay precise targeting data back to Task Force Kanaka to supplement the real-time satellite imagery from EOE's array of space assets.

The SSIN operator keyed a circuit active. The Real-Time Video monitor lit. The unglamorous features of Brigadier General Valery Athens, commander of the 42nd Air Assault Squadron. "Admiral? General Athens for you, sir."

Cortez turned to face the monitor. "Valery, Here's the tentative schedule. Once we're in effective range of the target, we'll begin the preparations for you. Your people will be in the air no later than five minutes afterward. Admiral Conners will get her people ashore about the same time you go 'feet dry' over the target. External Security reports the enemy is pretty light on the ground, there, so I'm not expecting too much trouble."

Athens frowned deeply. "With all due respect Admiral, you ain't gonna be the one dying if the Extra Specials are wrong ... again."

Cortez smiled broadly. "That's what you think, Valery. The Warlord doesn't like Admirals that get a lot of his troopies killed. In any event, the air assault is entirely your baby. Coordinate with Admiral Conners for the drop zones and beach zones. We'll be your fire support."

The frown eased up a bit. "Admiral, you almost make me trust the Navy. I'll talk with Admiral Conners and get back to you with the details."

The link went dark, and the techs rotated fleet disposition data back onto the monitor. Admiral Cortez turned back to the task of organizing the massive forces at his disposal to accomplish the Warlord's task- the liberation of the Galapagos.

The military forces of Peru, which had no directions to work after, seemed to be divided. However they managed to make counter strikes against Lima, Arequipa and some other places in the southern Peru.
Kopparbergs’ troops was not ready for this kind of big counter strike and suffered big losses. In fact, Kopparbergs lost the control over many big cities, including Lima and Arequipa.

“What happened?” said the Supreme commander on the secure-phone with General Andersson.

“They made a big attack on many of our cities in Peru. In fact, we lost the control of Lima and Arequipa.”

“WHAT?!? How could you let this happen?” The Supreme commander was not satisfied with the situation in Peru (you can’t blame him for that).

“Well, we had just taken the control over these cities, and didn’t have the time to make the necessary fortifications. We had just began to make that. And there were so many Peruvian troops. To be honest, we didn’t believe that they could make such a large strike against us.”

“Okay, report the losses and our plans for tomorrow.”

“We lost many men. I don’t have the precise numbers, but we think it was about 30.000 men. And many planes that were on the ground was blown into peaces. 1.000 men is missing, probably taken as POW’s.”

“Seems not good.”

“No, I think that we must withdraw.”

“No way! We can’t do that, we must have the land!”

“But sir, with all respect, we can’t handle the situation here right now. I need more troops, otherwise it’s just not possible!”

“You can’t get that. Okay, here’s what we going to do. Withdraw all of our troops from the southern Peru. Make a strong fortification in a line from the coast at Trujillo to the city of Iquitos. Move the troops from the southern Peru to the north, and distribute them amongst Ecuador and Peru equally.”

“Roger that, sir. How about the Galapagos Islands? Can I take some more troops from there?”

“No, we must have troops there to defend the islands, we can not leave them without defence. Besides, we only have one carrier together with a couple of battle ships there. A total of 29.000 troops is located there now, and it’s going to stay that way. At least for now.”

OOC: Due to the loss of land in Peru I have moved one carrier from the coast of Peru to the coast of Ecuador. I have three carriers outside Ecuador, three carriers outside Peru and one carrier at the Galapagos islands. Together with the carriers there are the same amount of other vessels as in earlier post, distributed amongst the carrier groups.

Three B-52 bombers were about to take off from the military airfield in Machala at the coast of southern Ecuador. Their goal was to make bombardments to Peruvian military holdings in the northern part of Peru. Until now, no bombing runs has been made, but as Kopparbergs lost over half of Peru they were going to be desperate.

The initial plan of the conquer of Peru was failed. The semi-political overrun (with the ultimatum) was just about to succeed when the big counter strike was made. The backup plane for the invade is a real, hard war. But it seems like Kopparbergs has underestimated the strength of the Peruvian military.

In Ecuador the situation looks much better for Kopparbergs. We have the control over all major cities as well as the whole coastline and the Galapagos Islands.

Kopparbergs has made several daily bombing runs over Peru with B-52’s, but has not made any progress on the ground. The Peruvian military has shot down three B-52’s and ten JAS 39 Gripen's.

The secure-phone rang in General Andersson's office:

“Yes, Andersson”

“Supreme commander, hello.”

“Evening, sir.” Andersson was a bit nervous, as always when speaking to the Supreme commander. Especially a day like this when he didn’t have good reports.

“How is it going, are we making any progress in Peru?”

“No, I’m afraid not sir… “ Andersson swallowed and continued “The Peruvians has shot down three B-52’s and ten JAS-planes. They also has made attacks at our defense line, but without progress so far.”

“Thought so, I’m not surprised…” To Andersson’s surprise the Supreme Commander seemed to be in a good mode, despite the losses in Peru. “Withdraw all forces from Peru.”

“What? Should we surrender Peru?” Andersson was very surprised, but he sounded relieved.

“Yes, I don’t want to loose more troops at the moment. Move all of our troops in Peru across the Ecuador border. Fortify the border between the two nations. And don’t you dare to tell me that the Peruvians will follow across the border.”

“Yes sir! No, sir, I will not do that. It should not be any problem in Ecuador. Thank you, sir.” Andersson was nervous, but relieved.

“Okay, make the troop movements. And move the remaining carriers in Peru to the Ecuador coast line.”

“Yes, at your will, sir!”

OOC: Kopparbergs are withdrawing all of our troops from Peru. Hence we also withdraw our claim of Peru, at least at the moment.

[Onboard at the carrier located at the Galapagos Islands]

“Sir, look at this, I’ve seen it a couple of times now. There are one or two planes coming in from west-south west, staying for a while and then disappear at the edge again.”

“Hmm… Don’t know who it might be. As far as I know there shouldn’t be any planes around here. It’s not ours and certainly not Peruvian as it comes from the wrong direction. And there are no ships in sight either.”

“Send out five JAS 39 Gripens to check it out. Tell them not to open fire, unless they’ll be attacked.”

“OK!”

[Pilot in one of the five JAS-planes]

“Wing 3 to base. I see a large ship formation coming this way. I repeat, many unknown military ships coming this way! Nation unknown. I see at least one carrier, it must have been their planes that was on our radar screen.”

“Ok. Supervise them, but keep you on a safe distance. We do not know who it is yet.”

“Roger!”

"Killjoy-4, this is Skyhawk. I have five bogies inbound at angels 10 at 016 true. Range is 170 kilometers."

Angel "Firebird" Romero eased his AS-12F Corsarius fighter to bearing 016 and did a visual search. The seven other planes on Combat Air Patrol maintained their orbit over the Task Force. A speck against the clouds in the right direction caught Romero's eye, so he used the onboard optical magnification to zoom in on the speck.

"Well, well," he thought to himself. "Looks like we've been seen."

He keyed his throat mic and called in the contact while he sent the image to Skyhawk via SSIN. "Skyhawk, this is Killjoy-4. I have five fighters inbound, range 100 klicks." Romero sent his fighter into a broad, climbing loop that put him three hundred meters higher than the bogies and still headed straight at them.

"Roger, Killjoy-4. Uncle Mortimer says to light 'em up. Weapons tight."

Romero activated the onboard fire-control system to let his fighter get a 'look' at the foreign aircraft as Skyhawk ordered the rest of the CAP to support him. The millimeter-wave radar quickly picked up the enemy aircraft, and all eight Valkyrie-II AAMs on the fighter signalled they were tracking.

"Skyhawk, this is Killjoy-4. I have positive track, and my 'birds' are chirping."

"Roger that, Killjoy-4. Stand by. Uncle Mortimer is going live."

Task Force Kanaka had been under EMCON for the last hundred kilometers. The only active emitters had been the Skyhawk planes conducting airborn radar sweeps. That now changed as every ship activated their air-defense systems. The atmosphere was alive with electromagnetic energy for more than a hundred kilometers around the Task Force.

Uncle Mortimer- the call sign for the EOE carrier Stalingrad- was linked into the air-defense system of every ship in the Task Force, and the surface-to-air variant of the all-aspect Valkyrie missile on every ship carrying them were trained on the incoming bogies. All four carriers began launching their plus-five fighters as well.

Skyhawk matched frequencies with the bogies' radio calls to their home base and contacted them. "You are approaching Evil overlord Enterprises' Task Force Kanaka. Maintain a minimum 100-kilometer distance or you will be shot down. This is your only warning."

At the same time, a tight-beam radio message in clear was broadcast to all Kopparberg units near the Galapagos on what EOE External Security had determined from reconnaissance to be the command frequencies.

His Omniferocity's government has made it clear for years that military adventures near the Dominion are unwelcome. Other nations may flail away at each other to their heart's content in North and South America, but military activity near the Dominion in the Pacific risks provoking a war. A war which Kopparbergs has no chance of winning.

Your unprovoked assault upon and occupation of the Galapagos Islands is completely unacceptable to His Omniferocity. To emphasize the Overlord's displeasure, Task Force Kanaka is even now approaching the islands. This unit is prepared to liberate the archipelago by force, if necessary.

However, His Omniferocity is unwilling to devastate the Galapagos unnecessarily. If Kopparbergs forces are removed from the archipelago forthwith, the Dominion will permit them to depart peacefully. Our External Security department suggests that Kopparbergs might find more useful employment for them on the mainland.

The Dominion awaits your response. Until a response is forthcoming, the Dominion will assume that a condition of hostilities is in effect, and will attack any vessel or aircraft coming within 100 kilometers of Task Force Kanaka. Any actual attacks will be responded to with overwhelming force.

If you agree to this terms, let us know, and we will withdraw our troops in 48 hours.

Other than as a market for EOE goods, the Dominion has no interest in mainland South America. You may do what you wish with Ecuador. The Dominion has no allies in the region and sees no reason why your government should not annex any portion thereof.

Task Force Kanaka will hold two hundred kilometers west of the Galapagos for 96 hours. EOE aircraft patrols will not approach within one hundred kilometers of the islands. Any Kopparbergs aircraft that approach the Task Force closer than one hundred kilometers will be assumed to be hostile and treated accordingly.

Valery Athens, CG of the EOE 42nd Air Assault Squadron, looked at the transmission from the Kopparbergs forces and sighed in relief. She keyed open a circuit to her opposite number at the 221st Arimobile Division and said, "Karl, we have a transmission from Kopparbergs stating that they're abandoning the targets."

Karl Wermer nodded gravely on Athens' screen. "I got it, too, Valery. What's the plan?"

Athens consulted another screen on her console. "Marshall King says to move ahead with a modification of Operation Sonora. The major difference being that we won't be getting shot at while we go in."

Wermer's expression shifted slightly into what might eventually become a grin. "That would be a nice change of pace. I'll get my people loaded. We'll be "feet wet" in less than two hours."

The General smiled. "Fast work, Karl. Try not to shoot the place up. We've got a bunch of folks from the Science Ministry arriving tomorrow afternoon."

"So long as no one shoots at us first, that isn't likely, Valery. See you on the ground."

"Good luck, Karl." Athens killed the circuit and keyed in orders for the transports and escort aircraft on her SSIN console. When she was done, she activated another circuit to Admiral Cortez.

"Admiral, Operation Sonora is underway now. I estimate the 221st will be on the ground in just under six hours."

Admiral Cortez smiled broadly. "Perfect timing, Valery. We'll be moving the entire force around 50 klicks east of San Cristobal Island. Once the 221st has secured the airfields, I'll have Admiral Conners get his people ashore as well. I want the whole archipelago sewn up by 0600 tomorrow."

"I think we'll manage, Admiral. Marshall King is sending a Brigade of engineers to help set up the air-defense network. They're supposed to arrive by 0300."

The Admiral looked away from his screen as he spoke. "Good. Good. The Ministry of Science people are supposed to arrive around 1300 with some folks from Internal Security, and I want to hand this baby over to them as soon as possible afterwards."

"What does ES say about the locals? Do they think there'll be any problems with them?" Athens was still worried about the airmobile troops who were her responsibility.

With a frown, Cortez replied, "Not so far as anyone knows. I doubt there'll be much resistance to the initial occupation anyway. Overwhelming force tends to keep civilians in their homes for the first twenty-four hours or so."

General Athens smiled broadly. "And once we turn everything over to IS and the Ministry of Science, it won't be our problem anymore."

"Well, the Task Force will still be here while the situation on the mainland is resolving. Everybody and their mother is invading everyone else over there. We don't want any of that slok drifting out into our turf." Cortez looked quickly to one side, then said, "That's it Valery. Keep me posted. I've got to coordinate a CAP for the archipelago."

"Governor, Doctor Rheinard is here."

"Spaceba, Katrina. Send him in." Governor-General Alexander Karetsyn sat behind his desk and worked on lighting a cigar as the Science Ministry representative was shown in.

"Sit down, please Doctor. Your report is ready, da?"

Rheinhard was short and frumpy, with badly thinning hair, no eyebrows, and ridiculously thick glasses perched on his stumpy nose. Ther ewas a shrewd mind behind the tired eyes, however. "Yes, Governor. The Science Ministry's recommendations were SSINed to your secretary two hours ago."

Karetsyn called up the file and scanned it quickly. His eyebrows rose. "You are sure of findings?" he inquired mildly.

Rheinhard nodded curtly. "Yes. This so-called World Wildlife Preserve has been horribly managed from the beginning. As a result, many of the species unique to the archipelago are in greater danger of extinction than they were two decades ago. Prompt, firm action is required."

"You are aware of difficulty in what you suggest?"

Rheinhard's expression softened minutely, but his eyes never lost their hard look. "It will not be easy for you, Governor, but it is necessary. It will also be quite expensive."

The Governor's eyes darkened. "Internal Security Ministry does not like spending money on such matters."

Rheinhard's expression was equally hard. "You have little choice, Governor. I remind you that His Omniferocity specifically ordered you to comply with the Science Ministry's recommendations on the protection of the islands' unique flora and fauna."

"I do not have authority to spend such money."

Reheinhard stood and planted his hands on the Governor's desk. Though far shorter and less distinguished-looking than Karetsyn, the sudden power revealed in the motion and the dark fury in his eyes completely cowed the senior man. "Don't play political games with me, Karetsyn!" he roared. You are simply unwilling to jeopardizee your cushy position here. If we cut the population down to the levels the Science Ministry recommends, your prestige will be reduced."

Rheinhard thrust his face closer to the Governor's and continued in a cold, deadly voice. "I don't give a shrill soprano hoot in Hell about your prestige! All I care about is protecting the islands from the stupid and mentally weak- of which you appear to be the most prominent member. If you do not act on these recommendations at once, I will contact the Science Ministry and complain about your lack of cooperation. I assure you that complaint will be forwarded to Mikalgard within minutes of receipt. Is that understood?"

Governor karetsyn found he couldn't speak, so he nodded. Rheinhard snorted in disgust and sat down. "These islands are going to get the best protection they've had since they were discovered by Europeans, Governor. You are going to induce most of the natives to depart, no matter how much money you must wave under their noses. The rest will be restricted to operating and maintaining the scientific stations we will be building around the islands. Internal Security troops will work with Science Ministry Staff to police the protected areas. The wildlife here will enjoy unprecedented protection from human intrusion."

The Governor recovered enough to protest. "That is not why we occupied Islands."

"No, but that will be the overriding interest in the islands henceforth. The military will still have their bases, but the primary focus for the EOE presence here will be scientific. Get used to it."
