OOC: Nice tank. Why is it that no-one ever has rifled guns? It's always smoothbore with you people...

the rifled gun used by the challenger 2 is just as effective as the smoothbore used by the abrams when it comes to any round and as a matter of fact the record for furthest confirmed kill is held by a challenger tank. The only reason that the UK is thinking of replacing the barrel is that it costs more to make the barrel and the rounds arent anywhere near as easy to get (not a problem for ns nations).

OOC: No the rifling slows down the round and muzzel velocity is vital for a KE round like a sabot. Also the rifling is worn away by the high speed that such rounds are fired at. It didn't matter in the Gulf War because all the Challengers were facing were outclassed T-55 Export Versions. In NS, where almost everyone has a decent MBT, this is important.

Actually the Chal 2's rifled barrel gun is slightly less powered than the basic 120mm smoothbores of the Abrams and Leo 2 when using APFSDS ammo (and more udner powered comapred to the gemran L55 smoothbore) how ever it is mroe useful when using HESH and HEAT ammo as those rounds retain thier effectiveness regardless of velocity and don't suffer accuracy issues when spun. The Uk kept the rifled gun as they reconned that in the forseeable future they would be unlikely to face any target that would require the full power of the 120 smoothbore and more liekly to face hordes of T-55 whicha re easily killed with cheap long rnage HESH ammo.
