Today, at the Ybronnebian technology conference, lead scientist Carl Dufranc and General Larik Draghe announced Ybronneb's plans to begin to build a cluster of Battle Mechs.

"Last week, our Lord Edwin Do'Calamar signed the papers that will allow us to catch up with our more technologically advanced neighbors. We will begin by building a cluster of mechs, a cluster being 3 trinaries, which is 3 stars, which is made up of 5 mechs. Therefore, in simpler terms, we will be building 45 battlemechs. We will be accepting schematics from other nations, and will also design a few of our own. This first phase of technological advancement will be crucial to the others.

After the cluster is completed, we will move on to Phase Two. This phase will consist of continuing construction of several more clusters and also asking other nations to donate schematics of space vehicles. We will study these and then return them to the nations. We will then begin construction of a fleet of our own.

The third phase will consist of continuing phases one and two and also researching advancements in transportation, weaponry, and communications. We expect that the entire plan, all three phases, will take approximately two years." said Carl Dufranc to the applause of thousands of people from across the country and some from other countries.

It is hoped that Ybronneb's plan is a success and that our nation will finally catch up to those who are ahead. This is Rob Gerfed, YNN, signing off.

OOC: I wanted my nation to advance to semi-future. I figure this is a good way to rp it. Any help with any of the phases is welcome.

A brief rundown of mech attributes and why they were rejected from the Weyrean High Guard arsenal in favor of HOPLITE(X) powered armor, and the Mark VI MBT.

A mech has several attractive attributes, the primary being psychologcal impact, mobility, and increased height. A charging mech can have a significant impact on untrained forces. This becomes useless if you are fighting a veteran force. A mech usually has greater mobility on the battlefield, and is able to move in all directions without having to back up, turn, etc. While this may seem benificial, most terrain can be transversed by modern armor as easily as by mechs. The greatest attribute of a mech is being able to fire from a greater height. This becomes useless against ranged artillery, or against hover-capable vehicles. However,a mech can more easily traverse mine fields and obstacles that standard ground vehicles. This is good for surprise attacks, although mechs are generally not very quiet.

The downsides of a mech are many. The sheer complexity of a mech leads to mechanical breakdowns, a sizeable manufacturing and upkeep cost, and a greater susceptability to shock damage than traditional ground vehicles. A mech requires heavy computing power, which leads to greater susceptability to EMP weapons and to risk of damage to the compuiter itself. This can be offset by using rod logic processors (which do not rely on electricity).

A mech also generally carries the same, or lower firepower than a traditional tank or its equivalent. The ability of a mech to use multiple weapons is offset by the sheer complexity of making articulated hands.

In essense, you're looking at a weapon that is extremely complex and expensive, and that can be replaced by tracked or wheeled vehicles in most instances. For mobile operations, a powered armor suit made of arachnoweave (nanomail equivalent) and other strong synthetics works as well or better than a mech. Ground vehicles using telescoping 'feet' for wheels are also highly effective, and have been tested.

For mechs, we recommend using a design similar to that of an AT-AT (four leg) vehicle, since it combines many of the benefits of a mech with the sheer firepower of a mobile fortress. Sensors should include three dimensional RADAR, millimeter-wave RADAR, EMF detection, infrared, and ground disturbance sensors. A mech -sohuld not- be considered a universal weapon that can function without effective support.

OOC:

Bah just biuld an entire cluster of Jagermechs they are the coolest mech ever...

Or go for really expensive clan assaults and if i was future tech i would have great fun ripping them appart with supremely cheap light tanks (well until i stict gauss rifles on them, then the GR takes up msot of the price...)

A letter of thanks is sent to Weyr:

To the Earthbound directorate of the Weyrian High Guard:
We apprecite the information sent. Due to the disadvantages you listed, we will also create several stars of Elementals, in mobile armor similar to your HOPLITE(X) armor. We will carry on with the creation of the mech cluster none-the-less, as the fear they inspire could be put to good use. Once again, thank you.

(OOC: If it isn't too late...)

President Deikun finds your interest in this specific line of technology intriguing. New Neo Zeon already has primitive mobile suits manufactured, if you'd like, we could ship some to you for quicker study. Check the New Neo Zeon storefront (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=361613) if you'd like to purchase any. We would also be willing to send our original blue prints for an extra price.
