As reported by Reuters:

Motomachi, Izu Oshima

Fears of an epidemic have engulfed the popular resort island of Izu Oshima following the deaths of several islanders at the hands of an unidentified disease.

Among the thirty the victims was island mayor Kimura Daisuke, 51, who's unexpected death caused a temporary vacuum in local administration, and the local chief of police. All services to the mainland have been suspended in order to prevent the spread of the contagion, and several vessels have been denied permission to enter the harbour.

In her first action since taking over the reigns of administration, interim mayor Takano Masako declared a state of emergency and ordered the imposition of a curfew in an effort to slow the progression of the malady.

As reported by Reuters:

Reports have just come in of sudden deaths on the neighbouring islands of Toshima, Niijima and Kozushima.

Although details remain unclear, the few extant reports suggest notable similarities to events on Oshima.

Motomachi, Izu-Oshima

Takano Masako carefully entered the darkened room, declining the invitation of the nearby light. In the gloom she could make out the television set sitting in the little alcove at the far side of the chamber, and instinctively she felt her limbs pull toward it.

Masako understood these impulses, and knew to obey them.

She silently crossed the room until she stood directly across the face of the set, her arms already reaching around its sides. Her well practiced fingers swiftly located the aerial cable, and with a deft tug removed it from its socket. Her task completed, the limp length of cable slipped gently from her fingers to the floor, tapping the wall is it fell.

Masako retraced her steps to the centre of the room, and lowered herself carefully to the floor, facing the now inoperable television. She took a moment to steady herself, keeping her feet tucked respectfully away from the alcove, until at last she felt comfortable. Then, alone in the silent darkness of the room, she began to clear her mind of all thoughts.

Adrift on the edge of consciousness with no sense of time, the invisible minutes slowly ticked by. Now, on the edge of her awareness she noticed a very faint tingling sensation in the tips of her fingers, an eerie feeling that gradually apread up her arm, becoming a wave about to engulf her...

She came to, still kneeling on the floor. The room felt cold, and it took a moment's effort to resist the urge to shiver. Her eyes turned involuntarily to the alcove.

A single spot of whiteness had appeared in the centre of the cold glass screen of the television. As she looked on, the spot began to grow, slowly at first, then with increased vigour, until the whiteness was racing out to the ends of the screen. After a few seconds the blackness had fallen away to a shrunken frame enclosing the light. The white rectangle started to swirl and shimmer like early morning fog, and at length her eyes made out shapes in tones of grey. The smoky shapes began to meet and coalesce, until the image of a room became apparant, with a figure kneeling on the floor in the middle of the screen.

Masako could feel her breath coming in sharp gasps as she stared at her faceless reflection.

"The time has come for our rebirth, Masako." The voice echoed in her head, until she was no longer sure if it came from the speakers at all. "The Teike shall return to rule here, and these islands shall no longer be a place of exile or escape for the mainlanders. The Seven Isles will rise as a new force so that the world may come to know how we have felt."

Masako found her voice, still barely a whisper. "What must I do lord?"

"Prepare the islands for our return."

The voice's words continued to echo as the grey hues of the visual room began to darken, merging with the expanding black frame until the screen was dead and lifeless once more.

Masako rubbed her arms, suddenly aware that the room was its usual temperature again. "We will be ready for you, lord..."
