Erik Rechnitz leaned off the railing surrounding his balcony on the 37th floor of the Ulrich Building. He gazed slowly at Virka, covered in glass and stone skyscrapers, the citizens on the streets traveling to their workplaces. The air was filled with the sounds of the MetroTransit light rail system and the cars on the roads below.

The little phone on Erik's desk let out several rings before he lazily picked it up and spoke into the receiver. "Erik Rechnitz here." he said. A deep, raspy breath reverberated through the line as Erik awaited a response. "We have a problem... A big problem. Prime Minister Helms is gone, and presumed dead." Erik dropped the phone onto the carpeted floor of his apartment and stared at the light blue stucco wall.

"Oh my god..." He muttered slowly.

The parliament was in chaos as all the members rushed to get to their seats. The emergency meeting came unexpectedly and shocked practically all the politicians. Vice-Minister Levi Eberstark banged an ancient gavel on the desk of the late prime minister.

"Order! ORDER!" he barked at the rowdy men who reluctantly quieted down. "As you all know," he began "The prime minister was discovered missing from his home earlier this morning. Substantial evidence shows he was kidnapped, and later murdered. Therefore, we must elect a new prime minister." he finished and sat back in his chair to slowly sip a cup of lukewarm coffee, watching the parties hover their hands over the election pads placed upon their desks. Each election was unbiased; every party voted for the best candidate.

Erik sighed heavily, worried. He glanced at his fellow party members, who cheered him on. Being the candidate for the Democratic Union, he could only sit in anticipation. Kay Heindrich, the Democratic Socialist candidate was scared, Erik deducted from the look on his face. Finally, Karl Berlitz of the Free Democrats sat in his chair with a confident smile upon his face, assured he would win the election.

Erik was amazed at the fact he had won the election. He laughed to himself as he saw the look of horror upon Karl's face and Kay's almost tear filled eyes. "Congratulations, Erik. Wonderful you won... But a shame under such circumstances." commented a fellow politician.

Charles Helms sat in the chair, shaking from fear. The man in the grey suit walked in circles around him, cracking his knuckles. "Those people are idiots; they actually believe you're dead! And pretty soon, you just might be..." the goon chuckled to himself. Suddenly, he straightened himself and gave a slight salute another person entered the dark room. "Take this shithead away." he gestured towards an iron door to the side of dim, concrete room. "Also, Erik Rechnitz has been elected as the new prime minister. Have your men go after him, Al. I will not accept failure." The goon nodded and dragged Helms through the door, and into the darkness.

Erik woke up as if he was being shaken by his mother to get up for school. Staring at the clock, he groaned and got out of bed to gulp down a cup of coffee. After donning his suit, he put a danish and the cup of coffee on a tray and sat down on his porch for breakfast. As he scarfed down the food and beverage, he shuddered at the thought of making a speech at today's military parade in honor of Helms.

Erik stepped on to the balcony and faced the hundreds upon thousands of people in mourning. I was obvious the people loved him,a nd for what he had done. The military parade had started, and he watched the soldiers in neat rows march up the streets. Suddenly, they stopped, and face Erik.

"My people," he began. "As your new orime minister, I shall strive to complete and improve the tasks the late Charles Helms began. Today, we are in mourning." He watched as the soldiers on the ground aimed their rifles into the air and fired 10 shots. Erik cleared his through and continued, "Many people did not know, but Helms' name was actually Charles Vogalsang. He found it strange, but now we shall honor it," Erik gazed at a statue of Elias Virka in a nearby park.

"Uh, Elias Virka was an important man in our country, but Charles Vogelsang was the man who helped create the strong, intelligent nation we are. I hereby declare the city of Virka to be renamed to Vogelsang! Now in rememberance, we shall sing the national anthem." A louspeaker began playing the patriotic music as the people filled in the vocals. The sound of a bullet leaving the rifle overcame the music, causing people to scream and panic as a .50 caliber bullet careened straight towards Erik's head...
