"Good... now for the end game to begin", chuckled Elena Yetskora.
Once minister for communications, Yetskora had over the past five years developed a network of opponents to the Party. Though, rather than looking to liberate the people these opponents sought to abolish socialism and instead install a totalitarian regime of no exact political leaning.
A tall 38 year-old from the Prokotova region of Lasatania, Yetskora had made her way up the party hierachy incredibly quickly. Of course, rumours abounded as to how she had managed this, but the real truth was that she was on of the most ruthless party members at a time when complacency had taken root.
In the room with Yetskora sat the Chief Kommissar Ernst Yelanet, the Social Minister Lei Zeitong and the heads of the army and air force, Marshal Andreas Protepkin and Marshal Kovolich Prokayev.
Prokayev spoke first, "So Komrade Yelanet, you are sure we are safe here?"
Yelanet smirked then said, "Why of course, and please drop the Komrade... There are roadblocks on all routes approaching this town at 3km out, also there is an attachment of 200 men from the Department of the Chief Kommissar.. nothing will seem out of place here.. given that a 'coup' is taking place.."
"Good... good... perhaps now we can make plans for the final assault on Korova?"
"Yes, indeed my friend," replied Protepkin, "We have half a million men set aside for this operation.. forces loyal to the Party are rumoured to number around 1 million... BUT... we control the airforce and the Navy has committed itself to neutrality... "
Yetskora interjected, "Excellent, but Marshal can we be sure the navy will remain loyal?"
Prokayev replied, "Why of course Ma'am... the only thing I am concerned about is the people.. what will they think when we destroy almost 100 years of history with one fell swoop?"
Yetskora took a long deep breath through her nose and looked out of one of the long windows in the room..
"Komrade, that is not as hard to accomplish as you reckon!! We will instead of destroying the party, enhance the party.. we shall expose the leaders of the party as traitors to the 'one true path', we shall remove the cancer eating our nation from the inside and shall instead declare the new revolution to be the next stage in the way forward for our nation.."
She turned to face the gathered men..
"And I tell you now, should any of you fail in this task, you can be sure that should you remain alive you shall suffer until you breathe your last.. "
Prokayev rose to his feet, his face red..
"How dare you threaten us, the very ones that have put you in this position.."
"pah, don't make me sick you pathetic old man.. you?? put me?? in this position? Prokayev.. you forgot if it were not for my helping you behind the scenes, you would have been liquidated a long time ago for your special likings.. Remember, I control things now... and I'm sure you don't want to make your life any more difficult... or that of your family... you wife.. and that lovely daughter of yours... with her soft skin.. and her..
"STOP IT! ", screamed Prokayev... "You do what you wish but I warn you, the army will only tolerate this abuse of power for so long.. then you will have all hell to pay.."
Unbeknown to Prokayev, the chief Kommissar had already risen to his feet and was standing behind him armed with a pistol, he whispered in Prokayev's ear..
"No komrade... hell is what you will pay.."
The bullet ripped through Prokayev's heart, splinters from the collarbone and shoulder ripping against his lungs.. He fell face first onto a pale white rug, which soon turned crimson..
Those who had remained sitting at the table sat staring, their eyes wild with shock..
Yetskora walked over to Yelanet and took the gun off him, she whispered into his ear
"Good my dear... now, you must get us Field Marshal Tuskovsky and inform him that he is to assume command a little earlier than planned."
"Ma'am.."
"Also, have your men prepare for the final assault on the Party Central Offices.. We need to take control fast and liquidate the remaining internal resistance.."
"Ma'am.."
With that Yelanet raced out of the room and downstairs to his car..
Yetskora scanned the room, the remaining men looked tense, so she placed the gun on the table and slowly sat down..
"Now, gentlemen, let us plan ahead for the taking of power...."

200 miles east, the Lasatanian capital, Korova, Party Central Office
Molotov kept his head low as the jeep sped towards the main building. Mortars had landed in the perimeter of the complex a few minutes ago and the defending troops had just emerged from their shelters to drag the wounded to cover or dispense a final shot to those too far gone..
The driver shouted at men taking too long to get out of his way and on occasion the sickening crunch as metal hit bone could be heard as someone failed to jump in time. Molotov couldn't believe it.. he'd survived one purge before and managed to save his neck in a previous coup, but this was different... the numbers were bigger... changes in leadership in this country usually involved a small number of conspirators, supported by the party in general.. but no, this was more serious.. On his journey through the city to the Central Office he had been shocked by the sheer scale of the destruction, tall columns of blasted concrete all that remained of the many party offices dotted round the city... he didn't even wish to think what had happened to the civilian populations.. for now the only people on the streets were security forces, the Kommissars and the army.. It was impossible to identify who was loyal to who.. some flew flags to identify themselves, but those that did more often than not found themselves to be among the first to die..
The driver yelled at him,
"Sir, we got emergency radio signals coming through.."
"What?" Molotov shouted back..
"We got an emergency message.. says something about Codename sunbeam.."
"Bunsteam??"
"SUNBEAM"
"Oh.. Sunbeam.... SHIT!"
It only took Molotov a couple of seconds to register what this meant, but by then it was too late.. over the city the warhead had detonated.. 80 years of party rule vanished in the blinking of an eye...

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM LASATANIA:
People of the world, Our Great Leader, Komrade Yetskora, made this statement on the outskirts of the former capital of Lasatania, Korova, during a visit to announce the building of a new capital, Kapital:
"People of Lasatania and those who hear these words beyond our nation. I stand before you now to declare the formation of both a new state and a new city. Following the detonation of a nuclear device by those who declared to be following the true path of socialism.. Fortunately, fighting in the capital had died down and the few forces remaining in the city were those faithful to the treacherous Morosov and his lackey Molotov..
Having seen the suffering of the people, I have come to the conlusion that we must no longer allow personal gain to be put before the masses. Every action a citizen takes must be for the good of state, not the party nor for prestige. No, now is the time to pull down the facade of what we declare to be Socialism and instead admit that we wish not to ensure the workers own everything.. that is an ideal.. the practicality is that we must rebuild our capital city anew and must also raise our nation's stature again. We can only do that by subjugating our will to that of the nation. I declare that the system we put in place will be fair for all, but all must give to the nation. We are an organism that must consider the whole before the individual.. We should be like our bodies, not crying when we tear a nail, for the body remains strong..
To this end, I announce the abolition of politics of any sort. The state shall be the one and only entity in this land. There shall be a hierachy, at the top of which the ruler shall stand, taking the weight of the nation on their shoulders, bearing responsibility for the nation's fortunes..
Anyone failing to submit to the rule of the state shall find themselves accountable to the whole nation, those who give their all shall find themselves receiving the praise of the nation.. Citizens, the choice is yours....
