OOC: This was already planned before I saw Holy Panoolpy's "I HATE MULTIPLE EARTHS ARRRG!!" essay, I just felt like I would do my part to put a stop to the rash of Earths cropping up.

IC:
The mining ship glided through space, its fusion drives propelling it along like some monstrous whale. Three kilometers in length and little more than a giant ion cannon with engines, the IMS was capable of burning through a planet's crust to get at the sweet, sweet succulant metals below. Which was exactly its mission today. "Target planet coming into range, captain!"

Captain Hornlock looked up from cleaning his nails. He was a typical SCARR (Skeelzanian Combined Advanced Resource Refiners) man: aloof, pampered, unconcerned with the running of his ship, but always looking for another buck. "Oh really? Planetary stats, now."

The sensor officer punched a few buttons, information jumping onto the vidscreen. "Terran world sir, approximately the size of Old Terra. Looks damn like it too."

"Any sign of occupation?"

"None whatsoever sir. The Terrans are laying their hands on every one they can get. Cutting them up like pies and dividing them among newer nations to get them out of their hair." The officer was giddy with excitment. This world had exactly the resources they needed.

Satisfied, Hornlock went back to his nails. "Thank you for the history lesson. Carry on with the operation." Barely containing himself, the Fire Control Officer pushed down the big, blinking red button on the console. A low hum began, gradually gaining in strength. Soon the floor began to vibrate, the overhead lights flickering as power was diverted to the Cannon. Exactly two minutes after the first push, the Ion Cannon fired.

A beam of light and heat, more powerful than a thousand suns, flashed away from the SCARR ship. It crossed the distance to Earth VII in the blink of an eye, slamming into the "North American" continent. Instantly the land turned to molton slag, then to mere vapor. The crust melted like a bad peice of tupaware in the microwave, the surface slowly liquifying. Within the hour, Earth VII would be a gigantic smelter's pot, filled with churning minerals.

Hornlock didn't even raise his eyes to watch the spectacle unfolding before him. He simply went on cleaning his nails.
