"Pokerlandia's 'Olympics' finale to be held tonight"
By James Priffin, senior columnist
Any one who knows anything about the history of Pokerlandia knows that the nation's spiritual and economical centerpiece resides in Gambling. The industry raised nearly 400 million dollars last year in gross revenue, an estimated portion of about 14% of the nation's economy, which is supported by over 300 industries.
What resides at the middle of the Gambling Industry? The illustrious World Series of Poker, of course. The World Series, which many Pokerlandians refer to as their Olympiad, gathers thousands of players from around the nation to play for the coveted prize of nearly five million dollars. This year, the series attracted more than 2,500 players, shattering last year's record of about 900.
Tonight, the final nine players will compete against each other for the coveted first place prize. They are:
Mattias Anderson
Josh Arieh
Glenn Hughes
Dan Harrington
David Williams
Mike McClain
Matt Dean
Greg Raymer
Al Krux
The previous year's winner, Chris Moneymaker (that IS his real last name), was eliminated on day one, showing that there is a substantial amount of luck invovled with winning. It is no fluke, however, that Dan Harrington is here. He's the most experienced at this table, making two previous final tables and winning the event a few years ago. This, however, is the most important WSOP event yet. The five million dollars is a record setting amount of money for the first place winner, shattering last year's record of two and a half million. With that being said, the Series saw a substantially larger number of inexpreienced players pay the ten-thousand dollar entry fee, trying to duplicate Moneymaker's feat, who was also a newbie before his victory.
The event is scheduled to start at nine o'clock PM tonight. The massive media coverage is expected to boost revenue along with the record setting number of entries and overall business in the WSOP. Look for Pokerlandia to recieve unprecidented attention tonight.
