From Heavenly Stature: The Fall of The Empire, Volume III

It is said that when a man has nothing left to lose, he becomes invincible. Such a lesson is a painful one to learn, for the broken man shall then be by no means beaten, but strong as the great immortal Gods, his vengeance as pure as the steel with which he shall deal judgment on those who wronged him.

Part Seven: The Tutor

Antonius lay on that cold stone floor for hours innumerable, in agony pure. His consciousness became a bout with unconsciousness, as time melded together into an undistinguishable mass of beatings, feedings, and screaming. For five years he lay there on that floor, in that daze, thinking that he must have died and now found himself locked in hell. For five years his blood and tears mixed on the stone to form a glassy red pool in which he lay. He had long lost the ability to scream aloud, and now only his soul vocalized the agony.

For five years, until, by fortune of the Gods, he acknowledged the sound. The tapping he had long heard in the depths of his mind, but had never realized was external. There, as he lay drooling, his eyes shot open, and he looked to the west wall of his cell. The rapping continued, echoing through Antonius’s empty head.

The man, with all the strength of Atlas, pushed himself up, elevating his chin an inch above the pool of saliva. His arms shook wildly, and he collapsed, but now, for the first time in years, he had a reason to exert himself. He pushed himself again, his legs moving back and forth across the ground, as his body spasmed with the great exertion of getting to its feet. Once again he collapsed. The third time was easier. He was able to extend his arms to their full length before falling on his face again. He continued this until he managed to move into a kneeling position.

As his calves burned under the weight of his lean body, Antonius crawled towards the wall. Using every final ounce of strength, he pushed himself to his feet, with the stone wall as a support. Moving his weak limbs unsteadily, Antonius hobbled across the room towards the far wall, from which he swore he heard a sound that was surely foreign to his eight by ten world. He neared the wall, and his legs gave way. He fell down to his knees, searing pain sweeping up his spine, and into the base of his neck.

The man reached out, and dragged himself across the last few inches of floor, until he was next to the wall. He struggled to his knees, and raised his near limp arm, and with the last gasp of strength he had left in him, he formed a fist, and struck the wall. A muted thud echoed across the room. The tapping continued. Antonius struck again, but the tapping continued as if nothing was heard. By now, Antonius was beginning to doubt the fact that this was a signal. Perhaps it was a fluke of imagination, or something mechanical beyond the wall. He lifted his head to the ceiling, and with tears of frustration blooming in his eyes, he cried out to the heavens beyond that low, stone ceiling. His voice was rough after months of disuse. His throat burned, but still the screams came forth, his hatred and frustration after years of containment finally coming to surface in a fit of rage. As his voice gave out, he brought his fists to the wall, beating it with all his might, until blood began to appear on the stone. He pulled his hands away, and looked at the blood, the tears flowing down his face at the hopelessness of his plight.

As Antonius leaned back to smash his head against the wall as his last act on Earth, something hit him like a brick. It was a voice. Faint, but Antonius was positive that it was a voice. He opened his eyes and looked around the room in vexation. He heard it again, so soft as to almost not be there at all.

“Hello!”

He cried into the dim, as he wiped the dampness from his face. His hands left smears of blood in their path.

“Hello! Who are you! Where are you!”

The voice came again, from the wall. Yes! The wall! That was the place. Antonius leaned his head towards the stone.

“Hello? Are you in there?”

He could barely make out the words.

“What?”

“I said, if you are quite finished, would you mind pulling on that stone right in front of you. It seems to be stuck.”

Antonius moved back, a mix of terror and euphoria. He leaned in again.

“Are you an Angel?”

The voice laughed harshly.

“I would say not! Now if you don’t mind, please pull on that stone, right there.”

Antonius looked down. The stone was indeed protruding slightly from the wall. He grabbed the corners awkwardly with his bloody hands, and pulled. His hands slid off of the stone, the blood making them slippery.

“Use your shirt.”

“What?”

“Your shirt. Rip it in two, and wrap it around your hands.”

Antonius looked down at the greasy ragt hat had been his shirt. He reached for the sleeve, and pulled. It came away easily, the threads worn and nearly falling apart on their own. He wrapped the strip of fabric around his hands. He did the same with the next sleeve, tearing it off, and wrapping it around his hands. He then gripped the stone again. He pulled, and slowly it fell away, to reveal a dimly lit, grey-bearded face of an old man.

Antonius stared in absolute puzzlement, having not beheld a human face for two years. The face was hallowed and sunken, the black circles visible under the eyes. The eyes themselves were completely unfitting to the rest of the face. They were grey, piercing, and alive, seeming to illuminate the space around them with a brightness all of their own.

“Hello,” said the face. Antonius simply stared. “It sure took you long enough, but excellent work. You know, it is considered extremely rude to stare. Excuse me, where are my manners? Forgive me. Correcting you, without even bothering to mind myself. Anyway, allow me to introduce myself. I am Quentin Ezekiel Kreschnev. Who would you be?”

“A-Antonius”

The man stuck an arm through the hole created by the removal of the stone. Antonius continued staring, before snapping to his senses. He awkwardly took the hand, and shook it gently. The man withdrew his arm.

“A weak handshake. Not a sign of a gentleman, but we will work on that later. All in good time. Now, there is other work to be done. You must help me to remove more of these stones.”

For three days, Antonius and Quentin Ezekiel Kreschnev worked to free several more stones, so that the old man could gain access to Antonius’s cell. The old man crawled through the hole, and sat down in a wooden chair that had long gone unused.

“Thank you for that. I could never have managed that alone.”

“Why are you here?”

“I am here for the same reason that you are. Because I am innocent.”

The man paused, as Antonius gave him a perplexed look.”

“You see, I am the brother of the Emperor Vladimir Kreschnev I.”

“The Vladimir Kreschnev I?”

“Yes. You see, when his son, Vladimir Kreschnev II took power, I became his advisor. There came a conflict between Generia and a certain faction of the People’s Republic of Georgia. I advised him to back down, but he would have none of it. He labeled me a traitor, and locked me up in here.”

“How long have you been here?”

“I suppose it’s coming up on thirty years. Is Emperor Kreschnev still in power?”

“No. He was executed?”

“Executed? How? I apologize, but as you probably know, there is little news that comes through here.”

“It was before my time, but there was a Communist Revolution.”

“In Generia?”

“Yes. A man named Sandor took power, and killed Kreschnev. The Imperial armies banded together under a man named Alexei, who toppled his regime. He then became Emperor.”

“Alexei. Tell me of this man.”

“There is not much to say. He was strong, and led well until his mind began to go. Then things fell apart. He was my father.”

“Ahh. I see now. And how did a prince find his way in here?”

“Alexei was murdered. For a long while I puzzled over it, but now I have reached the conclusion that it was the work of my sister, Alexia, who is also the reason that I am in here. She conspired against me, along with my the Duke Alexeovich. My brother, Emperor Tiberius had me arrested. I can only assume he was in on the plot. I swear to God, that if I ever find my way out of here, they will not be allowed to forget how they wronged me. But, I know that it would be impossible to get out. There is simply no way.”

“This tale intrigues me. Perhaps I can help you.”

“And what could you do for me, old man?”

“For fifteen years I have been tunneling through these walls. I only recently realized that I had been traveling in the wrong direction, but when I heard you in this cell, I decided to continue onwards, and perhaps find someone that would be willing to help. If you help me, I will give you something in return.”

“What do you have that I need?”

“Knowledge. I can teach you the arts, the classics. I can make an aristocrat out of you.”

“But I already am of noble birth.”

“Prison does horrible things to a man. Your senses are already dull, and I assure you so is your knowledge of Shakespeare, and Plato. How do you expect to get revenge on those who wronged you if you stick out at court like a sore thumb. They will recognize you, even if your face has changed, by your actions. You must become a different man.”

“I will help you dig, but I will have none of your tutoring.”

“You should reconsider.”

“I have given you my answer.”

“Well enough, but if you change your mind, I shall be ready.”

The next day, the men began work on a new tunnel, towards the east, according to Quentin. For one year they worked, digging with spoons and fingernails, dumping miniscule loads of rock through the bars that stood high in the cell wall.

“What if this direction is the wrong one? You made a mistake the first time. What is to say we are not digging up under the guards’ barracks?

“I am sure we are not under the barracks. If the direction is the wrong one, then we shall simply start anew. Have you any pressing appointments.”

Antonius laughed.

“You are old, and yet your strength is that of a man of thirty. How is this?”

“I was a soldier for a very long time.”

Antonius paused at the man’s words.

“You say you were a soldier. Can you teach me to fight with a sword?”

Quentin stopped digging.

“On the condition that you accept my knowledge as well as my skills.”

“It is a deal.”

And so Antonius began his tutoring, digging by day, learning the classics, and swordsmanship by night, so that he would finally be able to get close enough to his enemies to strike his blow of vengeance.

Antonius’s strength was sapped from the tutor’s continuous exercises, and the constant tunneling, but for the first time in as long as he could remember, he had a goal. In the third year, as the tunnel neared completion, Quentin spoke with Antonius.

“I feel that your training nears completion, as does the tunnel. You have aided me greatly, and so I will give you this.”

Quentin produced a small gold coin, and pressed it into Antonius’s hands.

“In my darkest hours here, I always found faith through this charm. It brings good fortune, and I would swear that on the grave of my wife.”

“I thank you, friend. When we escape, I hope that you shall be able to find peace, as I find vengeance.”

“You will have your revenge. I can tell you with no ego, that I have trained you better than any other teacher would have been capable. Now, we must prepare. Tomorrow we shall break free.”

In the morning, the two went to work. As they chipped away, a remarkable sight brought tears to Antonius’s eyes. As a single rock fell away, for the first time in seven years, the sun touched his face. With the last of his strength, Antonius tore away the rest of the earth and rock, and stumbled out into the brightness. Quentin followed. The two stood there in awe, marveling at the bright desert before them. The air was cold, but the two did not care. They were free.

Suddenly, a cry rang out above them. The sound of a gunshot ripped the air, and Quentin fell to the ground. Antonius looked in horror at his mentor, and then at the soldier, who now aimed his gun at him. He turned and ran, as bullets dug into the ground around him.

“Let him go. The steppe will kill him before we do.”

Part Eight: Revenge

While Antonius rotted in prison for seven years, the war continued to rage. The legions of Alexius and Tiberius battled across Mozambique for two years, neither being able to gain the upper hand. Finally, the tide began to turn in favor of Alexius. Aided by unknown foreign supporters, his legions broke through the Imperial line, driving into the heart of southern Mozambique. In a military evacuation worthy of Dunkirk, Tiberius’s devastated legions withdrew as Garrighus Khan knocked on the gates of Beira.

As the Imperials fled, Alexius’s armies ravaged the land. Obelisks fell, and fields were consumed by flame. Alexius took up residence in the former Gubernatorial mansion, where he would oversee his newfound Empire.

In Generia, Tiberius prepared for a gathering storm, while the Greeks grew restless at his border. The Imperial armies braced themselves to repel an assault they knew they could never withstand. In the fourth year of the war, that assault came. Alexius’s fleets entered the black Sea, landing near Port Burgas. The city fell within a day under the onslaught. The Southern Imperial army engaged, only to suffer three major defeats resulting in near total annihilation. Alexius’s armies moved northward, and the situation grew dark.

This grim era was that in which Antonius walked back into the world, the fate of an Empire hanging desperately in the balance.

The Wirrawayan Army poured across the Border into ther Generian Colony om Mozambique to meet up with Alexius's forces driving from the North. The army had waited a long time for this moment. For almost 7 years they had waited at the border. Towns had grown up around the stationary army and now the border with the former Generian colony was now one of the more urbanized areas in Wirrawayan Mozambique.
The army of 2.5 million drove onwards swiftly, routing diorganized Imperial troops and quickly securing the land and cities between them and Alexius's Legions. The Concordiat High command was pleased but troubled, they considerd Alexius more of a powerhungery and megalomaniacal threat than an ally and quickly set about plotting to destroy him and his rebel army.

"Red alert. Red alert. All men to your battle stations. All men to your battle stations."

Soldiers ran into the armory through one door, grabbed their three guns and ran out the other.

The Borman Military base might be hit by Alexius' armies and they would be ready.

In Maputo all soldiers were in the combat stance (Mentioned in other post) to repel enemies. All of Mazambique was in Alexius hands except for that Wirraway controlled and the Borman base.

From-Imperial High Command
RE:Alexius

My old friend,

As you may or may not know, the rouge Generian commander known as Alexius has landed in the southern city of Burgas. Your orders are to move southward, make contact with the enemy, and destroy him. Take no prisoners, destroy without mercy.

Your peer and friend,

General Kahn
Imperial High Command (yes, I had this carachter before you made your general Kahn)

The general looked over the message again.

Back to work again...

He hit his intercom linking him to his underling, a major.

"Major, we have orders to move south and engage Alexius's army. Order the men into their vehicles, and have the pilots begin flying sorties. I want to make good time."

"Yes, sir, I'll get right on it."

Two hours later, the division, 18,000 strong, with 500 tanks, 1000 personel carriers, and 500 self propeled artilery pieces moved southward.

At a nearby airstrip-

"Pilots, man your aircraft!"

A squadron of F35bs took off from the small VTOL base, and headed southward to turn the enemy armor into scrap metal. Each fighter was armed with four maverick missiles, and 4 sidewinders.

ETA, 50 minutes

The thunder of the armor could be heard throughout the countryside as the tanks roled toward their enemies. The artilery was going to be in range soon, and when they were, they would establish firing positions, and rain hellfire on the traitorous scum known as Alexius. Within a half an hour, 200 M2001 Crusaders, 200 M270 MLRSs, and 100 M109A6 Paladins were in positions, and commenced firing on the enemy armor.

ETA, NOW!

Meanwhile, the tanks sped toward the enemy. At 6000 meters, the King Abrams began to open fire on the onrushing enemy tanks. The advanced targetting systems showed exactly were to aim, so that the round would penetrate, and connect with the ammunition storage. Bardleys had also pulled up next to the Kings, the infantry dismounted, and took up defencive positions.

Antonius’s body hit the cold ground with a thud. The wind whipped through his rags, freezing him to the bone. He gasped for air, and forced himself to his feet. He had wandered the arctic steppe for two days, the snow caking in his hair, and freezing his lips. He had nothing for clothing save the tattered shirt and pants that he had lived with for seven years. He stumbled again, falling to his knees. He held his hands to the sky, pleading with the Almighty. As his vision went dark, he swore he saw a vulture circling overhead, ready to pick his bones clean.

Antonius awoke on a bed in a large steel room. An incessant whirring greeted his ears, and the room rumbled as if moving. He tried to sit up, but a hot pain resounded through his legs. He lifted the sheet, to reveal an awful sight. His left foot was gone below the blood caked ankle. As his eyes widened in horror, a nurse walked into the room.

“I see you’re up. I’m afraid we had to take your foot. The frostbite had it frozen solid.”

Antonius looked at her.

“Where am I?”

“You are aboard the GI-101 Alexander, the largest troop transport in the Empire.”

“A ship?”

The nurse laughed.

“Of course not. The sea scares me to death. This is GI-101.”

Antonius had heard of the enormous land crawlers, but had never seen one, much less been inside one. This particular model apparently sported an infirmary.

“It would be best for you to rest now. We should be reaching Generia City in about two hours.”

Generia City. Antonius could not believe his luck. He was heading straight into the belly of the beast. The opportunity to spear that beast was fast approaching.

The lumbering behemoth rolled up next to the specially constructed docking platform in Generia City. Antonius, clad in a borrowed military uniform, stepped out onto the dock. He looked out at the towering skyscrapers, to the beautiful white obelisks, and finally to the great White Citadel.

“It has been too long. Far too long…”

Antonius walked towards the elevator that would take him to street level. He had work to do.

Antonius stepped out of the cab, in front of a dilapidated townhouse. He checked the address scrawled on a piece of paper. He walked up to the door, and knocked three times. The door opened a crack.

“What do you want?”

“Alexander?”

“Who are you?”

“It’s Antonius.”

“Antonius is dead.”

“He is back.”

“Prove it.”

Antonius lifted up the hair that hung over his right ear, revealing a long, jagged scar running along the back edge of the ear. He had obtained the impressive wound in battle with a group of tribals in Mozambique. Occasionally it would still throb, bringing the memories of that long ago war flooding back into his mind. The man who saw the scar from behind the door had fought alongside Antonius in that battle. Now, his eyes widened.

“My God. Antonius. You have indeed returned.”

He opened the door.

“Come in.”

An hour later, a neatly groomed Antonius found himself sitting in a room, relating his adventure to his long lost friend.

“This is an amazing tale. What became of him?”

“He was shot as he breathed his first breath as a free man in thirty years.

“Do not despair. Now, he is truly free for all eternity.”

“That is the truth. Unfortunately, it will be a long time before I can be free as he is. I still have much to attend to on Earth.”

As Antonius said this, Alexander stood up, and disappeared into another room. He walked out again carrying a long object, wrapped in a silk cloth. He presented it to Anotnius, who unwrapped the bundle. Inside was a beautiful saber, his own. Antonius gasped.

“How did you find this?”

“You left it with me after you returned from Mozambique. You told me to keep it with me until you returned. For seven years, I have kept my word, and now I am finally free of it.”

“You are a good and loyal man, Alexander.”

“It is the least I could do. But enough, you must get to work. I can get you in, but you must do the rest.”

“How are we going to do this?”

“Tiberius is having a party tonight to celebrate Alexia’s engagement.”

“She is engaged?”

“Yes. A farce of a marriage to General Jaroslav. I pity him.”

“If all goes according to plan, he will never have to endure her conniving ways.”

“This is true.”

“Then let us get to work.”

-----------------

Alexia stood in front of a mirror in her chamber in the Imperial Palace. Servants tended to her appearance, as she idly contemplated her plans. Tomorrow she would be married to a certain General Jaroslav, a step paramount to her plans to take power. For the last seven years, she had kept Tiberius in her pocket, effectively ruling the Empire herself. Soon, she would make it official.

The door opened behind her. She turned to see now Imperial Chancellor Josef Alexeovich. She waved her servants away.

“Go. I have matters to discuss.”

The women bowed, and walked out of the room.

“Josef, what brings you here?”

Alexeevich moved to stand directly in front of Alexia.

“Why are you doing this? I tell you, marry me.”

“Josef, have I not made this clear already? This marriage is meaningless.”

“Then why?”

“We need him. His armies are necessary for our plans.”

Alexeovich took her hand.

“Don’t go through with this.”

“Josef! If anyone knew about us, the entire plan would fall to pieces! Seven years of planning! Seven years!”

“I will accept your judgment, but I will not like it.”

“Trust me.”

Alexia stood up, and the two embraced.

“Tomorrow everything shall fall into place. Now go.”

Alexeovich bowed, and walked out of the room. Alexia turned to gaze once more into the mirror. She watched as the door creaked open, and a man walked in. She spun around, startled.

“Who are you! What is the meaning of this!”

The man smiled. He was dressed in a jacket befitting the Emperor himself. A fine saber hung at his waist. He sported a neatly trimmed mustache and goatee.

“Do you not recognize me?”

Alexia became nervous as she eyed the saber.

“Leave now, and I will not call the guards.”

“You wouldn’t. How could you do that to your own brother.”

“Antonius? But-“

“Yes. Yes, you sent me away, didn’t you? Sent me to endure a life of torment, simply because you wanted to take power from our brother. Your scheme was perfect. You know it was perfect. But there was something you didn’t count on.”

“Antonius, I don’t know what you are talking about. You tried to kill Tiberius! You’re raving! Murderer! Guards!”

“No, no Alexia. I was not a murderer then. However, you have made me into one, as you shall soon see.”

The saber flew from its sheath, and Antonius lunged forward. Alexia screamed as she was thrown to the floor. The saber shot forward, stopping with the point directly on Alexia’s throat. The point pressed against the skin, and a small droplet of blood ran down her neck.

“A-antonius. Don’t kill me.”

Antonius snorted in disgust.

“I will not bother to dirty my sword.”

He withdrew the point, and sheathed the saber. He smiled as he eyed Alexia, before calmly walking out of the room. The terrified woman rubbed her throat, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and puzzlement.

The next day, Alexia stood before the altar beside her would-be husband. As the bishop finished speaking, she began to say the words ‘I do.’ She never finished them. A bomb concealed behind the altar, detonated by remote, exploded killing her and her fiancée. As the congregation screamed, a man dressed in black discreetly stepped out of the cathedral, into the bright street. He smiled as he looked at the cell phone in his hand.

The Titans

Alexius’s army had the Imperial armies in flight. They drew nearer Generia City at each coming dawn. Now, Alexius sat in his quarters aboard a GI-1 APC, modified for his command purposes. General Khan stood before the warlord, who reclined in a chair.

“If all goes smoothly we should reach the capital in two days.”

“What of Tiberius’s legions.”

“We outnumber them nearly two to one, and most of them are routing as we speak. The capital will fall easily.”

“Excellent.”

“Also, Lord, your sister, Alexia, was murdered.”

“Really? How?”

“A bomb went off during her wedding ceremony.”

“A shame. Knowing Alexia, she probably had it coming.”

Alexius was interrupted as the APC shook violently, and the noise of an explosion ripped the usual gentle whirring apart.

“What in God’s name!?”

A man rushed into the chamber.

“Sir! Something hit the treads! We’re disabled!”

The sound of gunfire shook the cabin as the AA guns roared into action.

------------------

Tiberius sat on his gilded throne, rubbing his eyes in despair. He was interrupted by the great doors bursting open. A shadow stood in the doorway. The shadow moved forward, revealing a well dressed man.

“Hello, Tiberius.”

“Antonius.”

Antonius walked forward, until he stood directly before the throne.

“She would have killed you, and taken power for herself.”

“I know. You were right in what you did. She stole seven years from you.”

“I take comfort in knowing that she is dead.”

“As do I, but now I fear my comfort will do little good in the coming days.”

“Our brother is coming home, isn’t he.”

“Yes. Unfortunately, he brings death at his heels.”

“He would have us destroyed.”

“And I am without guidance.”

“I am without employment.”

“This is true. Perhaps…You would like her job?”

“It would please me very much.”

“Then you shall have it, but I warn you, it may not last long.”

“We must prolong it as much as possible.”

“My armies flee. My lands are aflame.”

“I will help you.”

Tiberius sighed.

“We will fight him, whatever the case.”

“Yes. We will go down gloriously, consumed with bloody war, and the flames of the Gods.”

Tiberius smiled.

"You would make it sound almost pleasant."

"It will be very much so. When we enter heaven, we shall leave Alexius to his pain and toil on Earth."

Tiberius laughed.

"Then join me brother. Gather your armies, and I shall gather mine. Today we shall, all three of us, strive together on the same field! And when we have had our fill of battle, and enough men have died, we shall die like men, and enter the eternal kingdom!"

Tiberius stood, extending his hand to his seven year gone brother. Antonius took the hand, a smile on his face.

What was left of the Imperial army assembled outside of the capital. Antonius and Tiberius stood before the horde of two million men. They would make one last, desperate attempt to stop Alexius’s army, nearly twice their size. His army had haulted across the Slobozia river, airstrikes crippling much of their armor. If there was ever a time to strike it was now.

The army marched all day, until it came within sight of the river. Tiberius halted the army, anf stood before his men, addressing them.

“My brothers! Today our world is in peril! My father’s son, my brother Alexius lies across that river, with an army of four million combat ready soldiers. Today, our hosts shall meet on this field, and do battle to determine the direction our culture shall take.

However, my brother, Antonius has proved that loyalty is indeed possible in these times. I had him thrown in prison, and still he comes to my aid, with his own army to duel with Alexius here today. I hope you shall follow him as you would follow me. Now, brothers, we march to our dooms. May God fill your hearts with courage, and may Generia prevail.”

The host held their sabers aloft.

“For Generia, For God!”

The army advanced, crossing the river, as Alexius’s men looked on. The larger force advanced, halting a mere 200 yards from Tiberius’s army. The silence was broken by rough warcries in many tongues, and the clambering of sabers.

At 4 PM, on a cold Tuesday in March, Alexius’s host charged, and the armies met in battle. Antonius and Tiberius had kept their forces unified, forming a circular defensive formation. Alexius had split his men in two, APCs making a frontal assault, while his armored units moved around the back of the low hill that Tiberius’s host was occupying.

The Imperial army fired volleys of anti-tank missiles into the armor, decimating large portions of it. As the fortification was encircled, Alexius’s footsoldiers disembarked, and charged for the Imeprials on the hill. The bullets ripped the charging soldiers to shreds, but by sheer weight of numbers, the two armies made contact, sabers drawn. The battle for Generia had begun.

Within minutes, Doomingsland forces had caught up with Alexius' troops, and began engaging from the rear at the same time as the Imperials engaged from the front.

Artilery rained from the skies on the enemy army, and the armor stayed at least 5000 meters back, and picked off the enemy armor. Bradleys laden with infantry rushed by under the cover of artilery and fire from the tanks, and unloaded near the enemy. The men had already fixed their bayonets, and began pouring toward the enemy infantry under the cover of 25mm fire from the Bradleys.

Meanwhile, more F35 sorties were flown over the enemy armored columns, firing mavericks and turning before the enemy had a chance to respond. At the same time, a squadron of A10s flew over infantry positions, and dumped fuel air bombs and cluster munitions.
Generic empire
12-09-2004, 21:20
The armies came together with a crash that echoed through the hills of the great plain. The sabers slashed through the air, striking metal and flesh alike. Occasional cracks of gunfire and artillery explosions ripped the air. Bodies piled high. The Imperial army, being better trained, and equipped managed to hold off the superior numbers surprisingly well.

Antonius found himself separated from Tiberius, encircled by hordes of enemy soldiers. His saber sang in the crisp air, slicing off limbs, and sending blood onto the lightly snow covered ground. Across the battlefield, he spied his target, Alexius, once his brother, now his nemesis. Tiberius spotted him as well. Both men began fighting their way towards him. Tiberius neared him more quickly. Antonius became hemmed in by an unspeakable number of foes, and was forced to fight to avoid becoming swamped. Still more men swarmed up the hill.

Tiberius caught Alexius’s eye, and Alexius let out an inhuman cry, charging across the field towards his brother. Men fell like reeds before his saber. Tiberius let out a cry of his own, and sprinted towards the animal. The lines of battle surged back and forth as the men on each side strove to overpower each other. As Tiberius and Alexius neared each other, a space opened up, and men encircled the two to allow the to duel in single combat.

The charging pair halted, eyeing each other with burning hatred. Alexius roared, and leapt towards his enemy. Tiberius did the same. The two met in midair, each sending the other sprawling onto the ground. They leapt to their feet, and lunged again. Tiberius deflected Alexius’s sword, and thrust his own towards his brother’s heart. Alexius in turn parried. The two moved about the circle, lunging, thrusting, deflecting, their hot breath steam in the cold air.

Tiberius moved to deflect a blow, but his saber slipped free from Alexius’s, the point finding a hole in his armor, and penetrating deep into his side. He grimaced, as Alexius withdrew the bloody point.

“So, brother. It would seem that you will be joining our father shortly.”

Alexius raised his saber above his brother, now kneeling in the bloody snow. Suddenly, with a vicious roar, Tiberius hefted his saber, and with Herculean strength, deflected Alexius’s blow. Tiberius clambered to his feet, holding the wound in his abdomen. Alexius snarled and lunged. Tiberius swung his saber with such force as to cleacve Alexius’s weapon in two.

Alexius looked at the sword in his hand in disbelief, then at the second half, which lay in the snow. With eyes wide, he looked into his brother’s face.

“I am mistaken-“

Tiberius’s saber cut through the air, severing Alexius’s head. The head rolled across the ground, leaving a trail of warm blood behind it. The body remained upright for a split second, before tumbling to the ground

In the rear of the army, Garrighus Khan harangued his surrendering soldiers. In a fit of rage he opened fire on his own men. He was halted by a saber plunging through his back and out of his chest. One of his own had killed him.

With this, the battle of the River Slobozia was finished, the Imperial army emerging victorious.

Soldiers came back to the capital and took down their defenses. Mines were slavaged, sandbags, barbed wire, guns and such were brought back. Trenches were being filled in and more. When they left they didn't want any evidence of massive defenses being there.

Tiberius sat upon his gilded throne, surrounded by loyal diplomats, and Alexius’s treasonous soldiers alike. With a wave of his hand and a short sentence, he took their lives in his hands, and freed them of their crimes. A complete pardon was issued to each man who had served under Alexius. They were glad for it, as well. With their leader dead, they had nothing. With this pardon, they would be free to return to the army.

As Tiberius finished, a man stepped forward. He was clad in a black cloak. Tiberius eyed him suspiciously.

“Emperor…”

The man kneeled. As he touched the ground, he threw off the cloak, and leapt to his feet A knife hurtled through the air, lodging itself in Tiberius’s throat. A gasp went up through the room. Antonius ran to his brother’s side, just in time to see his eyes glaze over in death.

Anotnius’s head whipped around, to gaze in rage at the assassin.

“Alexeovich, we have unfinished business.”

“This is true, Antonius. I had hoped you would die in prison, but here is fine as well.”

Antonius and the Duke drew their sabers, and rushed for each other, as the court looked on. The men clashed amid the Imperial Chamber, the sabers singing in a silent room. They moved like cats, lunging, parrying, in a dance of death that would take the life of one. Time slowed to a crawl as the men dueled. Finally, Antonius’s saber made contact with Alexeovich’s arm. The man moved back, clutching the wound. He looked at his bloodied arm, and then at Antonius. In a whirl, his hand dove into his coat, and pulled out a small pistol. Antonius lunged, but too late. The gun discharged, the bullet ripping through Antonius’s abdomen.

Antonius fell, and Alexeovich stood over him. He aimed the gun towards Antonius’s face.

“Go to your family.”

A rage swept Antonius, and with a yell of absolute, pure rage, he sprang up, saber in hand, and hacked Alexeovich’s arm off. The man screamed as blood spewed from the stump. With a snarl, Antonius thrust the saber through Alexeovich’s stomach, the point piercing through his back. The man’s eyes rolled into the back of his head, and he fell to the floor as the saber was withdrawn.

He wiped the blood on his shirt. A second gasp went up through the room, and suddenly, completely unanticipated by Antonius, the assembled people bowed to the floor, chanting.

“All hail Emperor Antonius the Great!”

Antonius’s head sprang up, as he witnessed the amazing sight. His eyes grew wide. The saber fell from his hands, clanging on the floor.

And so the unlikely brother, Antonius, loyal servant to Generia, he who salvaged the Empire, came to be the great man. Emperor Antonius I was cornonated two days later, and promptly set about reconstructing the damaged Empire. Antonius 'The Wise,' as he would come to be known, would prove the strongest leader to date, arising from chaos and flame to instill order and peace.

The man ran down the hall, his footsteps echoing behind him. He stepped up to the vast oak doors and the guards removed their blades as to allow him to enter. He stepped through and ran up to Bhalk.

"Sir, TIberius is dead."

"WHAT!"

"Read this." The man pulled out a thin sheet of parchment and handed it to Bhalk.

"Well. At least its a good man in power. Here send this to Antonius." BHalk began to dictate a message as the attendant wrote it down as fast as possible."

To: Antonius I
From: Bhalk

We are happy to see some stability in your empire once again. It sadens me that your brother is dead, but things must go on. With your rule unchallenged we hand over sole control of the wall surrounding Generia to you. You may install gates were you wish or do pretty much anything with it now. We are programming HDP to only pay some attention to your nation. We understand their is much to be rebuilt and so are sending many building supplies as well as many construction crews to your land. I hope you accept it as a renewed alliance between our nations.
