OOC: Related to the Great Exodus thread, started by me. The system overview will come as soon as I can get it off my poor virus-inflicted computer (not this one, and damn the Blaster Worm).

Horizon System, Parlimian Space

Things were going very well. Around half of the massive colony ships had already been decommisioned and disassembled for use in the construction of the first ring city. The concept for a ring city was an interesting one, basically a series of rings inside one another, getting wider as they go out. On these rings are were the populous would life and work. The rings are connected by numerous support beams, but also by four massive rods that run down the quarter line, forming a big "x". In the middle, instead of a ring is a platform, domed. In this platform is to be the main city buildings, and because this shall be the capitol, the government buildings. The defensive grid was also interesting, with weapons turrets running around the perimiter of the out side ring, and down the gigantic rods that met in the center, providing a complete grid of protection. It was also planned to include shield generators, for further protection. The current ring city, planned to orbit the planet of Vista, a very large temperate planet, heavy in valuable minerals and elements, the most valuable being gold, silver, and platinum.

Those colony ships that were not part of the new Ring City were cruising around the system, acting as military ships (and the extensive weaponry made them useful at this task), while the newly established Parlimian Intersteller Marines made drops onto every planet in the system, where it was possible.

Marines explore a lush forest on Vista, weapons at the ready. (http://us.games-workshop.com/games/40k/imperialguard/gaming/tactica_stormtrooper/images/kasrkingroup2.jpg)

Life was good. The Parlimian people settled comfortably in to a life among the stars.

A New Exodus scout craft appears at the edge of the Horizon system and scans the up and coming settlements of the Parlimian colony. "It is thankful that your people are thriving, and have found such a ripe world. When you feel ready, we would be happy to trade mining equipment and pre-fab structures to help you expand.

And so the first Ring City was finally complete. President of the Horizon Democratic Republic of Parlim Jackson Maverick stood in the center of the massive city, while a fraction new inhabitants crowded in front of him.

"Ladies and Gentlemen," he said, looking around at the some 350,000 people gathered in front of him. "Welcome home." Everyone -every single last person present- cheered at the top of their voices, echoing off the domed city center. The noise was overwhelming, but Jack didn't mind. He was one of those people cheering.

Finally quieting down, he was able to speak again. "In the time since we arrived here we have accomplished so much. This city is a prime example of the will power of every Parlimian, everywhere, and it will remain so for as long as we posess that willpower, forever!" barely waiting for the throng to stop their cheering he continued, "And so I now name this city, in light of the perserverance shown by all of you, Port Hope!".

There was no trying to speak anymore, as the cheering was even more intense than every heard before. He smilied as he overlooked his people and he new that soon serveral other million people will be sharing the same cheer, as other Ring Cities across the system were near completion. Soon the entire populous would have a real home.

System Overview: The Horizon System

The system is made up of ten planets and their moons, orbiting a binary star. An asteroid belt winds in at the north, east and part of the southern edge of the system (from a 2d star map). The orbit of the planets is comparable to that of the Sol system, with only slight differences (ranging from hours to days depending on the distance of the orbit). The twin suns, however, greatly effect the habitability of most of the planets. Out of the ten planets, only three are actually capable of supporting life. The third and fourth planets are ideal for life, with climates ranging from arctic to desert. The tenth planet is covered in a frozen tundra and has an extremely thin atmosphere. The following is a brief overview or the planets in the system dubbed “The Horizon System” by its Parlimian Colonists.

Planet 1 “Ares”

Ares is a scorched planet. Being the closest to the twin suns, the atmosphere has been since burned away and leaving the planet beyond uninhabitable. The intense heat makes it impossible for any form of life to exist, even if supported by artificial means. Ares has a single moon, which is in a geosynchronous orbit with the dark side of orbit. Thus, the moon is relatively protected from the UV rays of the suns. The moon is also incredibly rich in important minerals. This makes it an ideal mining local.

Planet 2 “Crestfallen”

Crestfallen is similar to Ares in climate (albeit a little less hot) , but a unique mountain chain makes the planet appear unhappy or discontent, hence its given name. It has no moons, but is rich in minerals and sulfur (especially sulfur, and a lot of it) provided you can get to them...

Planet 3 “Haven”

Haven is exactly what its name implies, a Haven for life. Water covers 90% of the surface is covered by water, leaving a lush, fertile continent roughly the size of Greenland and another the size of Australia . The continent is ideal for farming and has some gold and silver deposits. Haven has seven moons, none of which are capable of supporting life, but are all rich in important minerals.

Planet 4 “Vista”

Vista is the most beautiful planet in the system. It’s blue mountain chains, lush temperate forests, sparkling blue lakes, lazy rivers, and wide savannas are a real treat to the eyes. Gold and Silver are present in extreme amounts, in some places literally covering the ground (which is no detraction from its beauty). Vista has two series of rings (made up of ice, mostly, though there are some metals present) around it, which, when looked at from the right perspective, form an “X”. Periodically, large amounts of ice will leave the rings and burn in the planet’s atmosphere, creating dazzling displays of light and color.

Planet 5 “Crater”

Why the planet earned this name is obvious, it’s a giant magnet for meteors. The surface shows clues that it might once have supported life, but it has no atmosphere and is covered completely with giant indents, holes, and its namesake, craters. Judging by the intense amount of debris orbiting, it once had a great many moons that were smashing apart by the objects that caused the planet’s acne-like look. Its single remaining moon is a testament to this, having most of its mass destroyed, the moon is now shaped a permanent crescent. Crater is some-what rich in minerals, but the amount of debris makes it very dangerous to enter and not entirely worth it.

Planet 6 “Void”

Void hasn’t much to speak of. It is completely covered in blue-ish sand. It has no moons, no minerals or useful elements and no atmosphere. The only thing worth seeing is, at night, the sand glows an eery blue.

Planet 7 “Hobbes”

Hobbes is a restricted and no person without clearance is permitted to go there. There is strong evidence that a highly-evolved and advanced culture once inhabited Hobbes. There is also considerable evidence that supports the theory that this culture descended into a great war and destroyed itself. There is no more atmosphere, though it is clear that there once was, strange energy signatures (clearly artificial) pollute the area and there is a fatal amount of background radiation all evident of some sort of high-tech nuclear war, or other devastating for of battle. It appears that all elements on Hobbes and its two moons have been strip-mined, leaving the environment (or what is left of it) shattered. Hobbes is named for the philosopher who feared the State of Nature (complete disarray, no government and that jazz) that theoretically befell this civilization.

Planet 8 “Labyrinth”

Labyrinth earned its name through the perpetual maze of cave systems and canyons covering the surface, leading to the theory that this planet was once complete submersed in water. It, however, is not anymore and has no trace of an atmosphere. Labyrinth is the largest of all the planets, easily twice the size of the runner-up, Hobbes and is a distinctive feature of the Horizon system. Though not confirmed, it is believed that there are large amounts of useful substances buried deep in the caves below. Labyrinth has eight moons, all of which share similar characteristics to it. It is thought that they all broke off from the massive planet.

Planet 9 “Maverick”

Maverick is indeed a bizarre planet. It has no atmosphere to speak off, and the surface is completely covered in glaciers. Below that is a huge body of water, at the very center a small mantle and core. Named for the Parlimian President who does things his own way, much like this planet. It has no moons.

Planet 10 “The Great Harbor”

The Great Harbor is completely covered in ice, and though it can support life, no one chooses to live there. Where it gets its name is from the massive space station orbiting it, which serves as a way-point for ships entering and leaving the system and also as a stationary military base.

Other:

Military Comets

Because of the large belt of asteroids surrounding some of its sides, the Horizon system has a large amount of comets in orbit around the systems. Because of their mobility, the Parlimian Military has employed these comets as mobile military bases that make complete circles of the system. The military, fearing the orbit of these comets would deteriorate, have placed thrusters from the colony ships to insure that they keep circling the same way over again. These bases are heavily protected, and most of which have a large compliment of personnel. There are still many comets waiting to be employed as military bases.

A large beweaponed Marine Dropship met the convoy. It opened a channel.

"Federation Convoy, you will follow me to Port Hope."

With that, it turned about and made a beeline towards the rings city.
