Industrial Experiment

OoC: I've been researching this for a while The entire thing is possible, in fact, very probable if we can ever figure out how to eliminate the power problem involved. This is my ONLY technology that will go on sale, but initially only to Germanische Zustande and ShadowTech and their allies. After a bit of time (Enough for word to drift around IC), I will open a small shop on someone's world as far away from my own space as possible. I don't like anyone knowing where I live.
Grasius, one of the many colonies of the Imperial Republic, but also the least populated
The room itself, while dark only a moment ago, was now lit by an errie blue-white light, which flickered constantly. The machines in the center of the room, though, remained dark, and even seemed to get darker as the blue-white surrounding them flickered faster and faster, almost becoming constant due only to the fact that they outpaced human perception. Humans, however, weren't the only thing watching it. An extremely high-speed holograph camera was snapping hundreds of thousands of shots per second, watching a blackened piece of hardened quadranium opposite the now almost completely black machine.
Within a minute, the flickering light stablized, and the utter blackness of the machines in the center achieved 100% light absorbtion. As soon as the light stablized, it changed from the blue-white it had been to the purest white anyone had ever seen, which stood in stark contrast to the deep black of the central machinery which, upon closer inspection, would reveal it to be vaguely shaped like a primitive naval cannon from back when ships actually sailed on oceans. The source of the white light, and the reason for the darkened machinery, would not be immediately obvious to anyone observing the scene, but to those who stood behing an almost entirely opaque window a hundred meters behind the machinery which was, in fact, a weapon, the source was known. A slightly more intense beam of pure white-light was being emmited by the gun and leaping across the hundred meter space between the barrel and the quadranium plate.
And behind the window stood not two or three scientists as was usually the norm for this lab, but a full team of men trained specifically for handling this weapon.
"Sir, power levels are at 100%, quadranium integrity holding at 90%"
"Hmm, push the power levels a bit higher if you can, tell me when you get a stable decay of the quadranium'ss molecular and electron integrity"
"Yes sir"
...
"SIR! The quadranium's integrity levels have drooped below 70%, sir, I don't know how this happened...no, wait, they're stablizing...yes, sir, we're getting a steady decay of beta radiation and and the surface layer of molecules are being torn away. Power levels holding at 102%, though I don't know how much longer they can hold it there"
"Ok then, engage the field projecters"
"Yes sir!"
With a flash, and no doubt a bang had there been an atmosphere in the testing chamber for a bang to travel through, the white radiance from the gun was again suffesed with a blue tint. The central core of blue emerged from the barrel of the weapon and drilled straight for the quadranium plate. Upon impact, there was another flash, and several lights lit up across the control board two hundred meters away in accompiament of a vast amount of information now on display on a screen near the console.
"Sir, we've got positive on proton decay, but the power levels have dipped down to 99% and the integrity has dropped down to 30%"
"No worries, assistant of mine, that should be expected, but still...can you raise the power level?"
"No sir, I'm trying, but I'm not getting a respon...SIR! We're getting proton decay from the direction of the weapon itself, it's going to implode!"
"SHUT IT OFF! SHUT IT OFF! We must save the weapon!"
In an instant, the blue core of the white radiance was gone, and only a few moments later, the pure beams themselves ceased. The room was thrown into darkness as the weapon sagged in its supports, having lost integrity.
"Shit, we need to find some sort of material that can handle the field projecter..."
"Sir, if I might suggest, there's been talk of using the same technology to actually shore up the atoms. It would be expensive to produce, but then again, the entire weapon is expensive. We might be able to build a cannon that could withstand firing several shots before it must be replaced. Maybe we could even include a secondary field projecter that cancels out the effects of the first beyond a certain point, allowing for unlimited firing"
"Assistant...where do you hear these things?"
"Well sir, talk of this technology has been all over campus back on Earth, and several students got together and began to design armors that could be made with it. No one's thought of using it in a weapon though, sir, I assure you"
"Very interesting...ok then, have the weapon rebuilt using reinforced atoms. We shall test the technology again as soon as the weapon is ready"
"Yes sir!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Basically, the way this technology works is by taking advantage of the inherent flaws of the two nuclear forces, the weak and strong forces. Though the weak force is very easily overcome through heavy electromagnetic bombardment, the strong force is much too resiliant to be beaten by an electromagnetic force alone. However, by also bombarding the nucleus of an atom with unstable sub-atomic particles, it would be enough to weaken the bonds between the protons enough that the electromagnetic repulsion they all experience would overpower the weakened strong force. This would cause a chain reaction in any material dense enough, such as armor plating on ships, that would literally desintegrate the material from the atomic nucleus out.
The main problem, however, is that it not only takes an immense amount of power, but the fields and particles involved are very hard to control, and have a tendency to destroy the weapon they are being used by. Fortunately, the inverse of the whole weapons technology can be used to strengthen the strong force enough to withstand firing the weapon. In the near future when I set these weapons on my ships, they will only see limited use as the power requirements are astronomical, but should I ever invent some new kind of generator, they may become more common-place.
Note that this whole thing is secret IC, so you don't know anything about it, but I plan to contact both ST and GZ and offer the technology to both of them, for a price, and also inform them that they are free to tell allies of this technology and tell them where it can be bought.
