He called upon his Defense Secretary, who quickly walked in. "Yes, sir?"
"Do you think we can salvage a military without conscription?"
"Well, it would take quite a drastic reduction in forces..."
"Do it."
"But sir?"
"Do it. Now. No more conscription."
"Sir, you will gain the young vote but loose most of the elderly vote."
"Leave that to my political advisors."
"Yes, sir."
Lord Harald got out, and quickly took to the podium. "Ladies and gentlemen, fellow Bonstocknians, I have an announcement to make. Bonstock will no longer have conscription..."
The crowd erupted in cheering.
"We will reduce our military, and make sure those tax dollars we'd devoted to nuclear missiles go to the pockets of young kids like you, and to your college education."
More cheering.
