IN BRIEF

New National Anthem for DontPissUsOff!
Today in Parliament, the House voted overwhelmingly for the admoption of "The Sacred War" as the new national anthem of DPUO, replacing "Hymn of the People's Nation," written in 1981 following the War of Liberation. While many in public welcomed the change, saying the anthem had a fine fighting spirit, some have protested that this harkens back to the time of the Military Rule period, in which "Svyaschennaya voina" was played almost continually by the Government. Government spokesmen were at pains to dismiss such suggestions.

Parliament "Divided" on Libyan security Bill
The proposed "Bill for ensuring the security of the Libyan nation" has divided the Parliament, as shown today by heated debate in the House. Mr. Tollman, National Democratic Party MP for Somerhampton, accused the opposition of "being all too willing to compromise the safety of Libya for the sake of their own pcokets. The leader of the opposition claimed that this Bill was however "merely another example of how indifferent Mr. Jones' Government is to heavy defence expenditure."

IN BRIEF

Libyan Security Act passes by 45 votes

Parliament voted today to pass the Libyan Security Bill, ending weeks of speculation as to what the result pof the vote would be. "The Act of Parliament Guaranteeing the Security of the Libyan Nation by any and all means necessary" was passed by 387 votes to 322, indicating just how close the decision and how divided Parliament was prior to today.

With the approval of the Act, Libyan Defence Force forces have begun mining the border with enemy-controlled Egypt. Details on the minefields are unclear, but they will be approximately 4 miles deep by the time of completion. In addition, Libya is to be reinforced by the 12th Air Defence Division and by 12 more attack submarines.

Navy requests "more Samsons"

In a surprising announcement today, the High Commander of the Fleet Admiral Michael Tracy called upon the Government to provide additional funding to the Navy for development of WMD delivery systems. Mr. Tracy called the planned acquisition programme "a programme to improve our ability to deter strategically any opponent by sea power." The move has angered pacifist movements and the CND, who have begun protesting in certain locations. No violence has been reported, but several arrests were made by police of protesters who attempted to climb over the barbed-wire fences of a Naval compound.

Shipyard workers call for pay rise

Members of the National Union of Shipbuilders (NUS) today presented a petition to the Prime Minister asking for higher pay if they are to continue working their current working hours. Due to the demand for military ship construction, many shipbuilders work 14-hour days with one 2 half-hour breaks and 1 one-hour breack for lunch. "While we understand the need for shipbuilding to protect the country," stated the NUS leader Simon Roberts in a press conference today, "we nonetheless feel that we are entitled to extra pay and/or privileges for working such long hours for the good of the nation."

Railways "unable to cope in time of war", claims report

A report published by the Ministry of Transportation lambasted the Railway Ministry for having failed to provide proper resources to update the railways system. Saying that the rail network was "vital for the country's economic well-being and the successful movement of large loads in time of war," the report went on to state that the merchantile marine fleet was also "dangerously small."

Naval funding increases to 38% of defence budget

"In a surprise move, the Minister of Defence, Mikhail Kazakov, today announced that no less than 38% of the Defence budget will henceforth be allocated to the Navy. The move was greeted with warmth by the Naval personnel we spoke to on the street.

*Cut to shot of group of seamen singing*

"When our land first, by heavn's command,
Arose from out the azure main
Arose, arose from out the azure main,
This was the charter, the charter of the land
And guardian angels sang this strain:

Rule, Republic! Our homeland rule the waves!
Our people never never never shall be slaves!"

As you can see, there is rather a lot of Naval support for this move."

Naval construction programmes boost shipyard profits

DPUO's shipyards revealed that they had enjoyed a record high in profits this year, despite the loss of civilian shipbuilding contracts to Greenmanbry shipyards.

It is understood that the civilian shipbuilding programmes were transferred to GMB's yards due to the pressure of Naval construction programmes.

A representative of the Soyuz Shipyard said: "We are proud to have been part of the building programmes. This announcement just goes to show that not all arms building is bad."
