Inside the Axis Nova Advanced Technology Research Center, scientists bustle to and fro around a test apparatus, with a large, military grade fusion reactor hooked to it. The entire ensemble is on a small platform, and there's a control panel and chair that have obviously been quickly welded on. A man is sitting in the control seat, being strapped in and being fitted with a spacesuit.
"Alright... If this thing works properly, you'll accelerate at ten gravities, and be at a mile's altitude in only a few seconds. Inside the drive field, everything will stay at a steady Earth normal gravity."
The spacesuited man nods, and his voice can be heard over an external radio system.
"Got it. You really think this 'spindizzy' thing will work?"
The scientist smiles.
"Well, while it's never been tested, all the math is quite clear. Since the drive field repels matter, you won't have to worry about air friction or anything."
The space suited man nods again, and resumes preparing himself for launch.
An amplified voice comes on over the intercom.
"Attention all launch area personnel. We are at T-Minus 2 minutes and counting. Please take your positions."
Technicians, researchers, engineers, and military officers all scurry to their posts, and soon the pit is clear.
"Alright... Bring the spindizzy up to zero point zero zero five percent power."
Around the platform, the air begins to waver, in a perfect sphere shape. Dust begins to kick upwards from the edges.
"T-Minus thirty seconds. Raise power to zero point zero one zero percent."
The field intensified, and the air is now wavering and blurring, making the platform inside appear as though it is a mirage.
"T-minus twenty seconds. Power levels are stable, we will begin ramping up to launch power now."
Inside the field, the spacesuited man smiles.
This thing has a lot more power than is needed for just flying into the atmosphere. I'll show the world what we can do!
"T-Minus 10... 9... 8... 7... 6... 5... 4..."
The man flips off the automatic pilot and grabs the control stick, and puts his other hand on a power dial.
"Warning! Automatic pilot systems disengaged!"
The man finishes the countdown for himself.
"Three... two... one... AWAY!"
He twists the dial all the way to the stops, and the fusion reactor dumps raw power directly into the experimental drive system.
The drive field suddenly seems to swirl incredibly quickly, then dissappears from it's location on the field. A concave set of pavement is gone as well, caught and carried away along with the drive field.
"This is Control... what the hell happened!?"
"He cut off the automatic pilot and engaged the spindizzy at full power!"
"Where is he?"
In orbit above NS-Earth, the astronaut smiles. The spindizzy worked perfectly, and had sent him into orbit in only a few seconds. As the experimental platform hovers, he activates the bank of scientific instruments on board, and they begin taking readings...
(OOC: I'm going to be turning into a futuretech spacefaring nation soon, and this is preliminary RP towards that end.)
