T-64 And Variants*

While in its original form the T-64 is very much an obsolete tank, extensive modifications keep it in operation with many countries.

Production of the T-64 began in 1966, and it looks like a cross between the T-62 and the T-72. The T-64 is actually the grandfather of the T-72, T-80, and T-90, and represents the turning point in russian tank evolution, from the T-54/55/62 series into the T-72 and its offspring.

The T-64 has a very low proflie, characteristic of most Russian tanks, as well as provision for external fuel drums. The T-64 is actually a better tank than the T-72, the T-72 having been exported wordlwide while the more capable T-64 was kept for russian use. All T-64 variants (excepting the original model) are NBC protected.

The T-64 is armed with a 125mm main gun, capable of firing the AT-8 'Songster' ATGM (replaced by turret-mounted Spike ERs on LRRA vehicles). The 125mm gun is equipped with an eight-round autoloader, which accepts the AT-8, APFSDS, HEAT-FRAG, and HE-FRAG ammunition. The gun has an effective range of approximately 2,100 meters and a maximum range of 4,000 meters. 40 rounds are usually carried, although this number may vary substantially depending on the type of ammunition used. A 12.7mm PKT is mounted on the turret for defense against aircraft, and a 7.62mm MG is slaved to the main gun for anti-infantry firing, with 300 and 2,000 rounds respectively.

All three crewmen are equipped with infra-red equipment for combat at night or in an environment obscured by smoke or fog.
