Omicron Alpha Business News Report, August 23rd 2004 -- Commerce Day
Commerce Day is a traditional Omicron Alpha holiday, which celebrates money and all it represents to our people. It commemorates the day on which Omicron Alpha Government Incorporated achieved total monopoly over the previous, public, government and put into motion a program of total privatisation and capitalism.
On Commerce Day, people celebrate the assets they have secured by spending money, not necessarily on business-related products. This is usually the time when people take the opportunity to buy expensive things they want or need, such as cars or electronic goods, or even moving house. It is also the day when those brave companies who continue to flounder around in the unprofitable Entertainment market finally breakeven, or sometimes make a profit. And a lot of people take the opportunity to buy shares in the Government Inc. faction they agree with most, making it the closest thing Omicron Alpha has to a voting day.
Today however the radical faction of Government Inc., 'National Consumerists', attempted to achieve a highly illegal Total Government Monopoly, ruining the important holiday for a lot of people.
The National Consumerists favour public services and government control over key industry, and one of their more disgusting ideas is to tax people to pay for all this. The NC opposed the banning of the slave trade, and is in favour of public welfare schemes, such as unemployment benefits and state pension plans. Referred to by religious leaders as 'Anti-Economists', the NC has rarely held more than 5% ownership since their formation over a hundred years ago. Past experience has taught the citizens of Omicron Alpha that such a welfare state is completely damaging to both the economy, and generally the people it is trying to help, and so capitalist parties have, combined, managed to retain more than 90% of shares quite easily. Most believe the members of the NC are insane, others believe they should be dissolved and have their assets seized. Anyone who does own a share in the NC tends not to tell anyone. For these reasons, along with various other illegal acts in the past, the NC faction of Government Incorporated holds an extremely small share of the company.
In what was apparently a long-planned strategy, the NC covertly intercepted almost all new Government Incorporated share purchases and redirected them, so that only NC shares were purchased -- gaining them power, and most importantly money. Alpha Police Incorporated and a series of bounty hunters are still investigating how this was achieved, though some level of hacking is a given.
Using their new-found wealth, and the distress other factions were suffering from after loosing their only source of income, the NC began buying-out the other factions of Government Inc. By the time their plot was discovered a few hours later, they had acquired nearly 62% of the entire company.
The only faction remaining, 'Compassionate Capitalists', managed to hold out long enough for Alpha Police Inc. to discover the plot and inform them. Had CC been forced to declare bankruptcy before the Police had discovered the ill doings, NC would have achieved Total Government Monopoly, and could not have been stopped. As it was, though, CC was still around, and enacted the relevant legislation to have NC's assets seized and their directors arrested.
CC has held the majority share since 1997 when they began a new advertising campaign and a new director took control of the company. Under CC control, Government Inc. has helped increase the overall economical wellbeing of Omicron Alpha by 36%, and there are now more rich and middle-class people than ever before. Since the incident, they have already seen their shareholder base increase by 11.62%. Economists believe this was the result of a grateful consumer base rewarding them for defeating the 'evil anti-Economists', the NC, thus proving the divine nature of the economy. Government Inc. accountants agree, but they just think it proves nobody wants to live under an evil anti-capitalist 'public' government.
A Total Government Monopoly in itself is not illegal, it is simply almost impossible -- in an anti-Economist state, for example, a 'political party' will never achieve 100% of the 'vote' legitimately, as it is nearly impossible to satisfy 100% of consumers. The way in which today's events are illegal is the method by which the NC attempted to achieve a TGM.
Police investigating the incident have already reported finding evidence that the NC was planning to hire more than 60% of OMilitary's stock to enforce their position once they had achieved TGM, meaning CC may not only have saved the economy, but also a lot of lives.
Celebrations for Commerce Day are continuing uninterrupted, however. Later today the National Mint shall present the new-look 2005 credit, followed by the annual 'Money Bin' event.
