Aboard East Islandian nuclear missile submarine Pearl Sea

"Contacts," the sonar officer announced clearly, her tone neutral. She punched in some numbers into her control pad and listened carefully. "Bearing two, zero eight. Profile matches up with Imperial Dawn class sub Eastern Glow. Second contact appears to be that of a Red Tide ship."

Captain Sung Chan-suk frowned, tapping his desk idly as thoughts shifted through his head. A member of the Islandian Navy's Undersea Warfare Force for nearly his entire adult life, he knew that no one had even come close to do what he was about to accomplish.

"Eastern Glow's captain will likely be Du Vanh," Sung said quietly, taking a drink from his canteen. "Her crew is on rotation this month. They're due out in a week."

"No matter," the man next to him, a rather tall, sinister looking, figure replied. "She is in our way, Captain Sung. You know what we have to do."

Sung growled. "Not if I can help it," he said quickly. "Helm, full speed ahead. Weapons, arm EMPs, and set 2nd Tier systems for start up. I want a one second relapse between our 1st Tier systems failure and 2nd Tier systems startup."

In Islandian submarines, electronics systems were set in Tiers, as to reduce exposure to an enemy ECM weapon as much as possible. Usually, there were three Tiers, each with a two second reboot time (after the initial EMP). If successive EMPs were detonated, then there was a problem; only weapons, communications, and steering could withstand any large barrage of EMPs.

"She's one of your former students, Captain Sung," the man said quietly. "Do you really think she'll fall for that?"

"She'll have to," Sung said quietly. "Otherwise-"

"Use your sodium explosives," the man instructed.

"I'm the Captain here," Sung hissed. "Remember that."

"But if we are prevented from reaching our target..." the man suggested.

Sung closed his eyes. Then he would never see his wife again, he knew. And the crew, for that matter, would die; there was a three hundred kg explosive located near the reactor core; if Sung couldnt leave Islandian coastal waters, then his crew and everyone within a large radius would perish from radiation poisoning.

"Tubes loaded!" a weapons officer shouted from his station. "Forward tubes 1 and 2 have EMPs, and tubes 3 and 4 have sodium warhead torpedoes. Rear tubes awaiting instructions."

"Load rear tubes with MOSS torpedoes," Sung instructed. "Prepare EMP projectiles." (MOSS is mobile submarine simulator)

"Armed, sir."

"Fire control, upload firing coordinates from sonar," Sung ordered. "Match and shoot tubes 1 and 2 only."

"Sir, Eastern Glow has launched torpedoes!" sonar yelled. "Fast movers, bearing two two zero."

"Fire the MOSS!" SUng yelled. "Deploy countermeasures, and fire sodium explosives. Link explosive control of sodium torpedoes to my console!"

The Pearl Sea shuddered slightly as its torpedoes rushed into open water, speeding towards the targets. SUng quickly snapped open the explosive controls, and watched as the sodium torpedoes slinked ever closer to Eastern Glow.

"EMP is detonated!" weapons shouted a second before the electronics systems were cut.

The backup systems flared to life almost immediately afterwards, and SUng frowned. Apparently, Captain Du had anticipated the very same thing, and had set her systems for a rapid recovery also.

"Sodium torpedoes are twelve hundred meters from target," Sonar reported. "ten thousand. Nine hundred. Seven hundred."

Sung's hand descended on the explosive control. The sodium torpedoes detonated, a fair distance away from Du's submarine, but Sung knew she and her ship would survive. After all, most Islandian submarines were triple hulled Kevlar and spidersteel...more than enough to withstand an explosion even at seven hundred meters.

"Full speed ahead," Sung repeated, not realizing he had already ordered that. "Stand down from battle stations."

********
"Are you insane, Captain?" the man yelled as the two of them settled into the relative comfort of Captain Sung's ready room. "That could have killed us all!"

"But it didnt," Sung replied, watching the man out of the corner of his eye. "And it wil be a while before we are detected again. Pearl Sea is the quietest submarine in the Undersea Warfare Force, and where we are going, there are so many damned whales that you can tell at all."

Pearl Sea had just undergone a refit of a new electronic system to simulate the sounds of whales and various other marine creatures with displacements of several tons.

"You should be careful, Captain," the man replied, his voice strained. "Or we will not see the end of our mission."

"I doubt we will anyway," Sung snapped back. "Launching nuclear weapons against Sino, Red Tide, and Japann? You must be crazy to think of something like this."

The man smiled evilly, and shrugged. "You have your orders," he said. "But you should know, they are not..weapons of mass destruction...at least not in the sense that you would think."

With that, the man strode out of the ready room and into the hallway.

"Minister... you have a visitor." Defense Minister Jov Leonov groaned as he rolled over in his bed and looked at the clock, 1:33 AM. A 4 star general entered the room. "What is it..." Leonov looked at the mans name tag, "Bhukov?" The General snapped too attention and saluted, "Sir! A single Tech-Com Corportion Frieghter carrying goods for the "Red Mercury" Project on patrol on the edge of our waters failed too come in too docks." THAT got Leonovs atention. The Supreme Commander took the "Red Mercury" Project DAMN seriously. "Get a investigation into it... NOW!"

First Commander Sung Hyun-soo marched into her commanding officer's suite and saluted crisply, snapping her palm and fist together. A tall girl for an Islandian (and a Korean), Hyun-soo exhibited all of her mother's attractive qualities, including a flair for the unique, an explosive temper, and beautiful features. Her long, non regulation hair stood in several braids, peeking under her navy-blue cap, and her khaki uniform was decorated with a silver command flash.

"You called for me, Admiral?" she asked, standing at attention.

First Admiral Cui Xiande returned the salute and beckoned for her to stand at rest. She did, and he nodded.

"No doubt you have heard the news," Cui said quickly, his tone regretful. "Your father has....left with a submarine, with a rogue intelligence officer aboard from the Intelligence Ministry. What I am about to tell you is classified, so do not repeat this to anyone."

Cui took a folder from his desk and handed it to Hyun-soo. "We have suitable intelligence that Captain Sung Chan-suk is planning to launch nuclear, and or biological weapons from his submarine. Especially nefarious is the presence of several weapons aboard, designated Slayer-Green."

Sung froze. She had heard of Slayer Green; no navy captain hadnt, especially after the repulsive manufcaturing accident which took the lives of civilians. She had thought Slayer Green, a biological agent, was to be jettisoned (it was rendered neutral by submerging in water) but apparently that was not the case.

"the agent aboard the Pearl Sea was designated to be jettisoned, into the ocean. Apparently, it was seized and is now in the hands of rogue elements, one of which is your father," Cui said. "Captain Du Vanh has just returned from a skirmish with him, and from all appearances, Captain Du had been bested.

"You, now, are part of the force which will hunt him," Cui said. "Blue Group is being deployed, and Ocean Harmony with it. Good luck."

Sung breathed heavily as she walked out of the office. For once, she had managed to control her temper, and the fact that the brass had her as part of the task group which was pursuing her father did not make sense.

Unless, of course, it was a test of loyalty.

Sung Hyunsoo walked slowly down the hallways, feeling her boots echo with every step she took...

****************** East Pacific ********************

The Hudecian transport vessel was close enough to detect the EMP detonations. The eastern pacific had been busy with transport ships and warships heading to the Korean peninsula and to Xiaguo.

"Captain, we are detecting an EMP explosion about several kilometres N 30 E (North 30 degrees East)."

"Report it in, are there any allied vessels in the region?"

"None that are reported sir."

****************** East Islandia *******************

The Hudecians who had came over months earlier were settled into their surroundings and had begun the drudgery of setting up spy networks and reporting relationships.

After weeks of dull work, the first real information came through. An East Islandian sub had came in after a brief battle somewhere in the east Pacific. The information came through a relative of a crewmember, the relative was drunk at a bar when, by chance a contact heard her drunken ramblings.

Although the information was doubtful at best, it might as well be reported.

More crucial though was the deployment of several vessels from port. No one was quite sure where they were going, but it was obvious they would be heading out soon.

************Hudecian Pacific Headquarters **************

"You give me the drunken ramblings of some lady, a possible EMP explosion, and the deployment of several E. Islandian vessels and you expect me to believe they are all linked? And you want me to deploy my stretched resources to find out?!" Admiral Smetka roared at the Colonel.

"Sir, the EMP explosion was confirmed, and it indicated a submarine battle since no surface vessels were in the area. Then, an Islandian sub comes into harbour after a 'battle' in the east pacific. The events are very likely to be connected, and we should try to find out at least." Colonel Machowski insisted.

A bit miffed by the Colonel's persistence, the admiral relented and agreed.

"ONE sub to find out what's going on, and surface vessels in the region will be on the lookout for strange occurances."

**************** Vancouver ************************

Captain Shi had his vacation cut short. Walking back to his Los Angeles class attack submarine he frowned. His ship wasn't adequately prepared for an EMP attack.

His crew had been hastily reassembled and the ship was as hastily loaded for departure. All of this was done quietly by the DND (Department of National Defence), but little of it was done well. As usual....

<<<<<EAST CHINA SEA>>>>>

A group of the newly developed Xia Hua Class Destroyers patrolling the Eastern Sea came under a weird incident followed up by confirmed reports of the Xianese Naval Ship, XNS Zhonghua commanded by Admiral Sawa.

The Yellow Sea Fleet under Admiral Sawa has contacted nearby Hudecians whether they detected or not and has also confirmed the Hudecians detected it also. A report has been sent to several coastal control centers. A direct report has been given to the Congress. The Xiannese are very concerned of this. Investigative reports done by the Naval crews of XNS Zhongsan and XNS Jieshi, closest ships and firts to detect the explosion. The submarine is thought to be an East Islandian naval controlled submarine.

A message from Central Command have been sent to the East Islandian Naval Controll headquarters whether that was related to the East Islandians.

Xiannese officials are now investigating on issue curently. Extra submarine patrols have been called in by the governent to patrol East China Coastline now occupied by Xiaguo.

<<<<VANCOUVER>>>>
XNS SUBMARINE Taihu, the submarine that accompanied Yeh to the Conference will now have to make the journey back to the East China Sea with two other Subamrines, XNS Meihua, and XNS Qinghua, an executive order to support the China Sea coast partols.

Undersea Warfare Force
Blue Group Headquarters
Niago, East Islandia

The seaport at Niago was alive with activity as the sailors and officers of the Submarine Service's Blue Group (tasked with patrolling the Eastern Pacific) prepared their ships to set out for sea. Not counting submarines permanently on China, Japan, or Korea station, there were approximately forty attack submarines available. Most were of the recent Imperial Dawn class nuclear subs, although some were of the newer Divine Wind diesel submarines or the Golden Empress variety.

It was no mere deployment; the forty submarines that made up the bulk of Blue Group were immediately ordered out on station, and surface and air forces in the East Lotus Sea were immediately mustered and ordered to perform anti-submarine duties. The entire Banner Navy was ordered to orange alert, one level short of war.

*************
As First Commander Sung Hyunsoo watched from her room in the Niago Club as her men bustled with the equipment. In the room was her husband, commanding officer of Shark Lagoon, a Golden Empress class sub.

"Are you going out for the alert?" Senior Commander Pak Su-kyun asked, watching her dress quickly. Pak had just returned from a two month stint.

"You know I have to," she said, slipping on her officer's cap, replete with the gold leaf of a First Commander and her ship's name. "I'm due out for a three month shift anyway. Just who would have thought-"

"That you would be hunting your dad," Pak finished for her. He sighed, and rolled over on the bed, still in his pajamas.

She shrugged. "ORders are orders," she said.

"I know," Pak said, sidling up to her. They kissed each other briefly, and Sung patted him on the head.

"Dinner at the Su Club when I get back," she said, before giving him a wink and slipping out the door.

Somewhere in the eastern Pacific

"Three hundred kilometers from the nearest refit station, and you're listening in on news broadcasts and satellite communications," Sung said. "Careful that they dont find us."

"You know our news services," the man replied. "The only real way to find out is to monitor our own frequencies."

"How do you know that the Banner Navy hasnt adapted nonsecure communications by now?" Sung asked. "It is standard procedure to do so."

"Because the sheer volume of comm traffic it would require for them to deploy a small task force," the man replied. "Not to mention all of Blue Group."

Sung's jaw nearly fell open. "Blue Group?" he asked. "An entire submarine group?"

The man smiled. "You are important," he said to Sung. "WE are important. But we wont be unless we make those missile launches."

Sung shook his head. "I wonder if I'll see Hyun-soo again," he said quietly. "Or even that bastard boy she married."

For all his murmuring, Sung Chan-suk really did like Senior Commander Pak, even if Pak was almost his rank and had an attitude born of patrolling the seas alone, without backup. Hell, Sung had been like that too...

"Just get us there, Captain," the man said. "I'll make sure we get back."

Naval Warfare Command HQ
Hu-kasa, East Islandia

The black, Agrigentian made cars zipped along the roads quickly, deserted as they were at the time of afternoon, where everyone was at work. Pulling up in front of the Navy HQ building, a massive blue behemoth with little in the way of aesthetics (save for a pretty interior), the cars deposited a small detail of people, all of whom quickly made their way inside.

They quickly were cleared through security and found themselves at the Naval Warfare HQ's Operations Center, surrounded by hundreds of technicians and flag level officers.

Admiral Qiao, brother to Foreign Minister Qiao, stepped up to the detail and saluted.

Chai Jun and Park Hye-min returned his salute, and motioned for everyone to go back to work.

"Sitrep?" Park ordered as they settled at a nearby table.

"Blue Group has been deployed," Admiral Qiao replied. "They, along with four task forces, are scouring the eastern seas, looking for any sign of the Pearl Sea. Border Police naval units have been notified, and have been put on an anti-submarine warfare capacity, operating in trios as they do in wartime. Air patrols are ongoing, and we are confident Pearl Sea will be found in a matter of days."

"Days is not enough," Park said quickly. "Admiral Wen has just briefed me on the possible payload of Pearl Sea: twenty two SLBMs, with about six Julang-2 missiles, six Type 500MRS-S1 missiles, and ten new model Peishang missiles. The Peishang missiles are armed with Slayer Green, and the rest are equipped with either anthrax or nuclear warheads."

Qiao's faced blanched, soon to be replaced by anger. "Why wasnt I informed?" he asked. Admiral Wen, head of the Undersea Warfare Force, sighed.

"My apologies," Wen said quickly. "I had a submarine facing off against Pearl Sea, but to my dismay, it was disabled before reinforcements could arrive. Likewise, it was only yesterday that i was informed of the payload of our rogue submarine."

Qiao sighed, and shook his head. It would do no one any good to yell now, he knew. It would only be remedied if he could seize or sink Pearl Sea before it was too late.

"Should we tell our allies?" Qiao asked.

"I dont know," Chai admitted. "It is not in our interests to do so, but they have a right to know. THey maybe headed for nations whom we may consider friends."

"Find the file of Zhang Ho," Park ordered one of her associates.

She was immediately handed a thick sheaf of papers.

"Apparently, Zhang Ho is not his real name," Park said as she skimmed through the documents. "Too bad intelligence director Wi is away and can only return tonight. Nonetheless, it seems he was involved in covert actions during the Second Korean War against Dra-pol..."

"Could it be?" Qiao asked quickly, addressing no one in particular.

"Keep speculating," Chai said, standing up. "I will make a phone call to our allies."

"But-" Wen started to say.

"No," Chai said smoothly. "THey deserve to know."

With that, she headed for a secure communications room and dialed up Prime Minister Matsuda of Hudecia, to inform him about the Pearl Sea.

With its state-of-the art MAD gear, Nimrod G--WE of the 12th LRRAF patrol squadron didn't have much trouble detecting the EMP explosions, even if they were quite a while away.

But intelligence still doesn't quite know what to make of things. It looked like an EI device, but nobody was sure. In the end, a message is sent to the East Islandian naval command. It reads:

A patrol aircraft recently detected a strong electromagnetic pulse from underwater in the eastern pacific, followed by propeller noises. East Islandia is very active in the region, and the LRRN is wondering if any of your submarines set the divice off.

The cluster of ships sped its winding way through the pristine waters, as numerous aircraft kept a constant vigil. The 5th Pursuit Group was known for its submarine hunting capabilities, scoring countless victories in numerous fleet exercises, but ASW was an inexact science, which usually fell further than practice normally does theory. While the F-35's maintained a tireless air patrol around the small Andrea Doria class aircraft carriers land based Orions searched the vast expanse of water across the horizon.

The sensitive new sensor suite on the upgraded Delfinos was extremely effective but there was just too much ocean to cover.

Slowly the fleet began to set in for a warm pacific night as combat patrols eased off and the formation tightened. The rogue sub could not stay underwater for long, and of course the 13th Submarine Force was still out there, looking.

Matsuda panicked a little, not sure what exactly to do. But he tried his best to put on a brave face, MacNally would be sure to take advantage of any weakness on his part.

"Captain Shi has his sub already assigned and out in the E. Pacific investigating what we know about the incident. We'll notify him of the new intel ASAP." O'Hara reported quietly, trying to avoid appearing to have had previous knowlegde about the incident but unable to.

"What do you mean, we already knew about this?" MacNally asked sharply.

"We had some intel that something may be going on, so we decided to investigate... we had no idea it could be something so major." O'Hara stammered.

"Enough bickering!" Matsuda boomed silencing the both of them. "O'Hara, you will find that submarine and you will capture it or send it to the bottom, or I will hold you personally responsible for this mess."

The Hudecian battle fleets in the region were put on alert and were busy securing shipping routes to protect the convoys to S. Hanguk. Any suspicious signs were pursued vigilantly, and the Hudecian crews were put on edge. Of course this caused a lot of false alarms, and wore the crews out but the goal of finding the Pearl Sea.

Eastern Pacific, off Okinawa

The klaxons began to blare, shattering the previously pristine silence that most of the submariners had seemed to take for granted. Rushed, sailors began securing hatches, dropping through ladders, and scrambling towards battle stations.

"Commander, two Red Tide submarines of the POPE class bearing three three one," the sonar officer yelled. "They have not detected us yet. Shall I deploy the countermeasures package?"

The countermeasures package was an electronics suite that simulated noises of marine animals with the weight of several metric tons or more.

"No," Sung quickly replied. "Stay passive. Get me bearings on the two submarines and track them. If they head into Islandian waters, send a tight beam transmission to HQ and report the news. But rig for silent running and prepare torpedoes. Is Ocean Wanderer in sight on the sonar?"

"No ma'am," her sonar officer replied. "They have probably dropped to silent running."

"Maintain comm silence," Sung ordered. "Prep countermeasures. Wait for them to pass us."

"Commander!" her first officer, a petite Thai Islandian, protested. "They are clearly hostile sub-"

"Our mission is to find Pearl Sea," Sung replied. "And as the daughter of Captain Sung Chan-suk, I would probably be more able to negotiate with him than anyone. Now quiet, or they'll hear us."

She doubted that; there were easily two to three meters of soundproofing between the submarine's insides and the triple hull structure. All of them were a special composite foam which absorbed sound materials quite well; the only setback was that sounds from the outside were also limited, and everyone had to don earphones in order to listen in on the situation outside.

"Now its time to wait," Sung breathed slowly, fiddling with her watch. It was a blue submariner's watch, with a silver star and the symbol for the Islandian Undersea Warfare Force on the face.

Pak had given it to her for her thirty second birthday, two months ago.

She wondered if she would see him again, as she always did on missions.

"Recording ma'am," he replied. "Go ahead."

"This is Sung Hyunsoo, commander, attack submarine Aisho. We are here with another submarine, and we believe we have sighted Red Tide ships. Keep quiet; with luck, they wont know what we're hunting for and will just pass us by," she said in her native Korean.

At the very least, they would think her crew was from South Hanguk, and that would buy them time to wait for the Red Tide ships to pass and to continue on their way. If intelligence was right and her father was on his way to Station Dra-pol (launching waypoint for target taskings in Drapol) then she only had a matter of days to intercept him.

Not that it mattered; she didnt like Drapol and wouldnt mind if the country had gone to hell. But orders were orders, and she wondered if her father, good soldier he was, had the sense to dispute his given orders.

Probably not, she thought, as she kept one eye on the status screen, her hand poised over the "Launch EMP" button.

She guessed that the Hudecians would have more Korean speakers than Islandian speakers; given the relative obscurity of the language (although it was easy to learn), few spoke or even knew of it.

The POPE-Class submarines were making alot of transmissions too each other... and the amount of transmissions indicated that there were more subs in the area. Quite odd too since they were designed too run VERY quietly in the water... it was almost as if they were in a recovery operation.
Then the transmission came in. "This is the USS STALIN calling all fellow subs... the package has been found, I repeat the package has been found." The two Red Tidean Subs proceeded too go full speed towards a area in the northwest.

However, we are not sure, it may be a whale, but we can not take chances, the subs are still at the Midway Islands and will be here shorty. Our ships will request assistance from you, we are scattering to avoid a massive strike. We will prepare submarine..."

The XNS Zhongsan is now sailing zigzags to avoid a close shot. The group has now scattered itself and will rely on their radar and cooperation between each other.
"Captain Kim, Sir, the Hudecians have just requested a confirmation of the object we have just detected. Our reports are ready to file. What are your orders?"

"Load Port 1, 3, 5, 7, and 8. Make sure the davits are secured, push to 24 knots. Load 3 at once. Draw forth 15miles, to intercept." Kim was confused, he had called for support of the XNS Zhonghua for assistance. Trembling, his second most daring mission, the first an attack in Japann, he is now ready to die for his country.

Meanwhile, Admiral Feng-Sawakura has just signal an air defense around the destroyers along with hudecian Air parols. 10 J-10 minis were launched via catupult and will jointly patrol the area, each carrying one ndependent torpedo.

M.M. Cecchino
Seawolf class SSN, Undisclosed Location, Western Pacific
__________________________

The submarine came slowly to the surface, performing a spiral pattern to make sure it's sonar was able to check the entire area as it rose to antenna depth. The sea was fairly calm; four-foot swells barely assaulting the rounded hull, and cumulus clouds in the mostly blue sky. As the Cecchino leveled off just beneath the waves the ESM went up, sniffing for hostile electronic signals, followed shortly by the search periscope. Sweeping around the sky quickly the Captain made his observations:

"Looks clear. Lets transmit".

"Aye, aye, Captain", responded a petty officer, as he raised the UHF antenna.

The radioman powered up his transmitter and then keyed out their call sign, SCC, on the satellite broadcast band. Three seconds later the hot printer in the aft corner of the room began to print up the coded reply.

two hours later...

"Captain, we have a target bearing three-four-zero," a voice crackled through the intercom.

"Confirmation, Sonar?" responded the captain; drops of perspiration began to migrate their way down his forehead.

"Possible match on the target sir. The signal intensity just increased about four minutes ago", he said as the Captain appeared behind him. The trace barely showed on the screen, a thin spoke of broadband noise.

"Can you get a blade count on anything?" inquired the senior officer.

"No, sir." The sonar man shook his head. "Just a small bit of noise."

The second convergence zone was a good hundred miles off and at such ranges the acoustical signals lost definition. The captain walked aft to Control.

"Take her west at five miles at twenty knots," he ordered. Hopefully they would be able to get precise range information and a much better tactical picture without giving themselves away.

As the sub moved it's way west the Captain watched the bathythermograph trace. As long as the temperature didn't change, he'd be golden.

"XO plot it, and get that report written up."

The East Islandian response raises eyebrows in the LRRN command.

The thought of a rogue missile submarine is quite fearful, but anything that big would be hard-pressed to get past the LRRN, into LRR waters, but it is figured that the target is somewhere else.

A message is shot back to the East Islandian naval command, which reads:

Do you have any idea where the submarine is going? We have patrol aircraft and Krivak frigates that can assist in the hunt, based out of Jeju-do island.

Meanwhile, the Aluka class submarine LRRNS Jack Bruce cruises along on the surface, several hundred kilometers off the Korean penninsula. On the horizon, the other LRRN Alukas, the LRRNS Eric Clapton and LRRNS Ginger Baker sail on the surface.

Captain Pete Young watches as an airliner flies overhead from his position on the conning tower. Then, a young Ensign pokes his head up through the hatch.

"Message for you, sir."
"Be right there, Roberts."

Captain Young climbs down the ladder into the submarine, and heads towards the CIC.

"Here's the message, sir."

The ensign hands Young the printout of the radio transmission sent by LRRN command.

An East Islandian nuclear submarine has gone rogue, and may be headed in your direction. Stop it at all costs...just try to keep it away, alright?

"Well, that's that. Prepare to dive, level us off at fifty meters, chief."
"Aye, sir."

The signal from the whales was strange though, not like anything he had ever seen before. Although he couldn't put his finger on it, his gut told him something was wrong.

Quickly, he typed out a report and included his concerns. Attaching a copy of his scans to the report he sent it via secure email to the military oceanography lab in Victoria. Feeling a little better he continued piloting his plane towards his carrier.

The long black Al'auto 760 luxury sedans raced their way down busy streets of Sicilia, lights blinking a Government blue. Turning onto Via Principale they swerved into the reserved center lane. It was one of the very few streets in the capital, all of them main arteries, that had a reserved lane for government officials and law enforcement officers. Midtown traffic was chaotic at rush hour, and this was indeed an urgent matter.

Pressing hard on the break peddle and then releasing it slowly, SPO Giovanni Casadetta swept across 3 lanes of traffic and onto a private roadway. Once through, a solid ironwork gate was closed behind them and a row of tire spikes suddenly erupted from the ground, leaving a marked landscape of dirt, dust and steel protrusions.

The slowing motorcade pulled up to an impressive structure of Asian design, originally named Castello Cinese. The aging structure was built by the order of King Umberto II, over two hundred years ago. Ironic how the East Islandian embassy was once a palace used by a man who waged a brutal war of imperialism against them. That thought struck Giovanni as somewhat comical, as he skillfully maneuvered the vehicle through a series of concrete barriers and a final checkpoint of guards and guns.

By the time the 760's and their police car escorts arrived at the embassy, the once sunny morning had matured into a miserable rainy afternoon. However, the near torrential precipitation gave no release from the unforgiving humidity that plagued the coastal city's summers.

Under a large overhang the vehicles' finally unloaded their passengers. Among them were Dominic Somma, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, General Gandolfo Luciello, CINC High Command, and Admiral Lia Antanato, CINC 3rd Fleet.

"Sir, contacts leveling off," sonar operator replied. "They're leaving."

"Good," Sung replied. "Keep up the sounds for another minute; then level off and dive deep. Hopefully teh convergence zone will cover us. Time to Station Drapol?"

"Two days in transit," navigation replied. "But it may be as long as three; with the increased patrols, we need to find alternate routes."

"I think they've told everyone except the Drapol navy," Zhang snickered.

Sung shook his head. "This had better work," he said to Zhang. "Or our lives will have been wasted."

"There's always Matsu Dome," navigation suggested. "News usually takes a while to transit between there and the outside world, so I doubt they'll see us as hostiles."

Sung shook his head. "Only as a last resort," he said. Matsu Dome was an underwater staging and repair area off Hokkaido. A very remote post, it only received news once every three days, when one of three satellites overflew the Dome and beamed down news. Otherwise, it was so far out of range that the only other way was to establish communications by piggybacking signals off cellphone providers servicing Hokkaido, a somewhat detectable approach (military grade transmissions on civilian networks? obvious)

Sung had used Matsu Dome during his other tours, especially during the recent Drapol war, where he had docked his submarine there a number of times.

"We'll see," Zhang said. "We'll see."

"Five days," the navigator said. "And thats final."

"Five?" Hyunsoo exclaimed. "They'll be on-station in two! Cant we possibly go any faster?"

"Well..." the navigator said uneasily. "There always is Nagusha Approach. From there we could shoot a tight beam transmission to Matsu Dome and have Red Group deploy one of their submarines to...find your father."

Hyunsoo sighed. Possibly one of the most dangerous paths, Nagusha Approach was a twisting corridor of mountains, plateaus, and valleys-all barely above Aisho's crush depth. Twenty meters more, and either a new record crush depth would be set-

Or the submarine would fall prey to the ocean's immense pressure. Either way, they would have to try it.

"Do it," Hyunsoo snapped. "Call Commander Cho and tell him to tell command what we're going to do, and ask him to wish us good luck. Now move! Oh, and try to establish communications with Matsu Dome and Red Group headquarters, to see if they have any snappers (ooc attack subs) in the area."

The guards snapped to attention as the visitors entered, responding with a quick Islandian style salute, an hand to the shoulder, and opened the doors to the communications room.

Inside was the East Islandian ambassador, Qiu Ji, a middle aged, jovial man with a knack for putting guests at ease.

"Come in," he said in Italian, beckoning them to the seats, where fresh grappa and updates awaited. Waiting until they were seated, Ji nodded to an aide, who quickly opened up wall mounted video projector

"Greetings to all," he said quickly. "Although I would like to serve the grappa with some bread and perhaps a four course meal, time, as usual, tugs on my sleeve like a whiny mistress. Nonetheless, I will leave my senior military officer, Naval Lieutenant Chun, to brief you."

Chun saluted the officers and stepped up to the podium, armed with a pointer. He began to explain teh situation:

"At 0500 hours yesterday morning, Pearl Sea left drydock at Niago on a routine trip," Chun said. "A shakedown to test the new countermeasures system we installed, which emits a variety of noises to simulate marine mammals. However, unknown at the time, was that Pearl Sea was carrying a full missile and torpedo complement, something that was discovered only an hour later, when we checked the arms depot and found the clerks all gagged and bound.

"Upon learning of this, Eastern Glow was ordered to intercept Pearl Sea; however, Captain Du, commander of Eastern Glow, was bested-though not sunk. We believe this may indicate that Captain Sung Chansuk is not inclined to shoot first, and that he may wait out his searchers. Furthermore, this indicates that Sung is hesitant, and may give us all the advantage we need to do him harm.

"We suspect now that Sung is headed towards what we call Station Drapol," Chun reported. "It is basically, the launching area for maximum damage, for target taskings on the Korean peninsula; he is approximately two days travel from there, possibly less, if he decides to take an underwater approach that our navy frequents.

"However, we have alerted elements of Red Group, which patrols the North Pacific, in Japan," Chun continued. "Whether or not we can deplloy additional forces from Matsu Dome and northern Hokkaido is a problem; communications have been difficult, with the nasty weather in Northern Japan lately."

"Thank you for that update lieutenant, I think you are entitled to our SITREP now," replied Admiral Antanato, her voice unremarkable as far as eloquence goes, but somehow it showed something far deeper. With every word she belayed hidden emotions, and great mystery. "We have the 5th Pursuit Group, and…", she let out a slight laugh, "Lucky 13...the 13th Submarine Force conducting ASW operations to the west of Honshu. We have had several reports from both subs and surface ships; many of them have stumbled upon unidentified submarines, all of which, sadly, do not match the one we are after.

"We will immediately move the group north, to Drapol Station, however I doubt that will help much. If he detects any of our ships, which he probably will, I am sure he will change course and slip away.

"I am not so much concerned with Agrigentian or Islandian ships giving away our subtle ambush, but rather those of the other Asian nations involved in this cat and mouse game. There is far too much at stake to let so many countries, especially ones in bed with the giornalisti, to ruin this operation."
She finished. The room was suddenly, and tragically vacant of her words, her voice, and her secrets.

"Matsu Dome, I do recall something about that from the TPDI briefs. Just how many subs do you have down there?" asked Luciello anxiously. He looked at Lia reassuringly, she was new at this after all, and he was certainly glad to see a woman, especially one so intelligent and capable, make it this far in the Navy. Balducci certainly ran a great ship at the admiralty, and with people like this on our side, not even the current situation could seem that desperate.

The Merlin swept across the ocean and dropped a series of Active Nondirectional Buoys.

"They have a strong contact on buoy eight," responded the Air Flight Coordinator. He was the live link between the Helicopter and the Captain. "No sign on MAD however."

"I got him, definitely a sub", announced the Sonar Operator. Then the excitement in his voice died down, as realization set in. "He just increased power. Cavitation sounds, single-screw submarine, maybe a Victor...not what we are looking for."

Under normal circumstances the spilling of four-figures of Drapoel warships into the Yellow and Japan seas might have caused some panic in anti-Drapoel nations, but it was supposed that this time the justification would be understood and accepted. Patrol boats, frigates, missile boats, and submarines, anything that may have been of use was deployed. Normally there would have been issues with fuel rations, but the army, air force, and Red Bamboo had already decided to hold major exercises, this year, so there'd be no war of offence... it was as such acceptable to expend rations.

As yet it wasn't clear how far south the Drapoel vessels would deploy, but they quite effectively covered the width of the Yellow Sea as far as they did go.

At Kanggye, DaKhiem, and Seoul, Red Sky ABM/SAM systems were raised by lifts from their bunkers and their radars began searching the skies for hundreds of kilometres around.

"No matter," Sung said. "We can take Saisho Approach; that will cut down our time by at least half a day. From there, we can hit our taskings with almost pinpoint accuracy. Furthermore, what if Matsu Dome sends out raiders?"

"Matsu Dome is covered under a huge rainstorm!" the man thundered. "They cant even communicate with command!"

"What if they do?" Sung asked. "Naval HQ will probably send a ship or airplane to rely a ULF tight beam transmission. What then? We will have been lost!"

A chime interrupted, summoning the captain to the bridge.

"Multiple contacts!" sonar called. "One destroyer sized contact, presumably of the Hudecian Navy, possibly out from a staging area in Japan. And another contact; profile matches with that of a Dra-pol ship. Multiple airborne contacts also, probable orbiting aircraft."

"What about the other Hudecian which was following us a while back?" Sung asked.

"Towed sonar indicates that they are at least fifty to sixty kilometers off," the sonar operator replied.

"The destroyer and its frigates should be entering the convergence zone," the navigator announced. Hours ago, Pearl Sea had already entered a convergence zone, and was due to be out in five minutes; there was at least twenty minutes until the next one.

"Depth?" Sung asked.

"Six hundred meters," the dive officer replied.

"Countermeasures?" the weapons officer asked.

"Prep the tubes for continuous fire; load with sodium torpedoes and Long endurance submarine simulators," Sung ordered. "Ready an EMP. Status of missiles?"

"Missile room reports that all missiles are ready in their waterproof casings," weapons replied. "It will take a total of three seconds to fire off six missiles in their casings; once they hit the surface-"

"The casings will open and they will fly off," Sung replied. "Yes, Lieutenant Shin, I know. Engine room all stop, and hold position. Comm, open a channel to the ship."

the communications officer flicked several switches, and nodded to the captain.

"This is your captain," Sung announced over the public address system. "I wish you all a good afternoon, here in the sunny Northern Seas. Our situation right now is dire; not only have our own countrymen turned on us and exposed us to their 'allies,' we are prevented from our most important and sacred mission by a plethora of ships. Although Intelligence ordered this mission, it has now gotten out of hand; apparently, our nation feels we are traitors for following its orders.

"Most of you are of Korean descent," Sung continued. "Most of you served in the Korean Operations Zone during the Dra-pol war, and all of you knew how it was. Now, we must embark on our vengeance, and we must prevail. Let us send those murderers to a fiery and loathsome death!"

No one dared cheer, for fear of generating noise (the announcement was barely more than a whisper) but Sung could see that the men in his control room were cheered. Almost all had lost family members in the Drapol war, and, as such, had been handpicked by him for this reason.

"Return to comm silence," Sung ordered. "We cannot wait any longer. How long until a firing solution is calculated?"

"Four minutes," weapons replied. "The Missile techs are working on that right now; they say it only has an eighty percent chance of hitting on target."

"That will have to be good enough," Sung said, ignoring the glances from the intelligence officer. "Status of LRRN ships?"

"The submarines are surfaced, sir," the sonar operator replied.

Sung sighed. He had fought alongside Hudecia in the first war, and he did not want to kill them, although they may have thought otherwise.

"Arm sodium torpedoes in forward tubes three and four," Sung ordered. "Match bearings of Hudecia destroyer."

"Matched, sir," the sonar operator replied.

"Weapons, link explosive control to my station," Sung ordered. "Prep the EMP."

"Yea."

"Fire with a two second time delay on my orders," Sung said. He waited a moment, checking his screen, then said, "now!"

The WSX torpedoes rushed out of their tubes, one after another, heading straight for the LRR positions, their guidance wires scrolling out immediately after them. Within seconds, the torpedoes' own ultrasonic sonar went active, and began to relay a picture back to Pearl Sea.

"They are out sir," Sonar announced. "Tracking."

Sung opened the explosive control, and let his hand hover over the EMP button.

With luck, the torpedoes would explode before they could cause serious damage and hit them. If not, there always was the EMP....

Whatever the case, he had to buy time until he could launch.

Drapoel vessels extended from one side of the Yellow Sea to the other, but Admiral Li-Il's vessels were leaving gaps as they rushed out by the dozen, all travelling at different speeds. 4,138 hulls comprised the entirety of the Yellow Sea Fleet, but as they came forth from Namp'o, Haeju, Inch'on, and other, smaller bases, there appeared to be some confusion over the precise nature of their spread from east to west.

Ashore, scores of aircraft made ready for launch, amongst them several dozen Mi-14 ASW helicopters, a number of which were already airborne over the sea, looking for any sign of conflict which may require depth charges or 485mm torpedoes...

"Multiple contacts in water!" sonar shouted. "Drapol ships!"

Captain Soon cursed. "Prepare torpedo tubes for continuous fire!" he yelled. "Load all tubes and arm all torpedoes! Prepare submarine simulator, and arm a cruise missile!"

Twenty hours ago, Northern Fury had left Matsu Dome, steaming at full speed in order to re-establish communications with command. Although attempts were made to contact Undersea Warfare Force-Red Group HQ in Tokyo, radio traffic was heavily muggled, and tight beam transmissions could not be calibrated correctly (sent to the right place). As such, Soon had moved his submarine intot he East China Sea, hoping to establish contact.

What he had found, however, was that Pearl Sea was in the East China Sea He had opened a channel with a Red Group base in Kyushu, and had learned of hte news.

He had cut off the transmission when he heard news of the hostile submarines-just in time to miss the news that Pearl Sea was also a rogue submarine.

"Battle stations!" Soon ordered, swinging into his chair. Battle klaxons blared, and the crew scrambled to life. "Lock on those Drapol ships! Dont let those f*ckers get away!"

"Targets locked!" Weapons reported.

"Fire!" Soon ordered.

Five torpedoes rushed out from the Northern Fury headed towards the Drapol ships.

"Circulate transmission to Pearl Sea," Soon said. "Prepare a relay buoy; tell Chansuk that Xiuwei is behind him, and he can count on us and Matsu Dome! Also, beam a UHF to Matsu Dome; tell them we need support here! Drapol ships are in force!"

"Yokaimashta," the communications officer rreplied, snapping out the reply in quick code. He punched a button, and sent a relay buoy floating to the service, which then spread the news all over the East China Sea.

Of course, in the meantime, the torpedoes still rushed towards the Drapol ships....

Matsu Dome, Yamazaki Ichiro commanding
Red Group staging area, somewhere under North Sea of Japan

Matsu Dome was easily the most ambitious project the East Islandian submarine and engineering services had ever undertaken. A massive, three kilometer wide, four kilometer tall dome with small outcroppings and modules extending for nearly a kilometer in each direction, automated defenses and massive underwater energy generators clamped to a volcanic seafloor, Matsu Dome was a self sufficient little city; there was even a sizeable hydroponics facility where fruits were grown.

Throughout the large area, klaxons began to blare. The submarines of Red Group's Matsu Garrison roared to life as sailors scrambled aboard, inbound for the East China Sea....

As soon as the car was in motion, on its way back to the center of capital city, the group began to talk lividly.

"Things are getting heavy," said Admiral Antanato

"They certainly are, Lia. The Dra-pol fleet certainly changes the dynamics, but the game is still the same. We catch the sub, offer it a chance to surrender, which it won't take, and then we blow it out of the water," replied Master General Luciello, his voice not exactly cold, but definitely not warm.

"What about the others?"

"Give them access to our Military Net, but highly limited, low level Naval Clearance only. Monitor their access and look for any spikes," answered Luciello.

"I will handle the politics here. Whats the worst case scenario?" domanded Secretary Somma.

"Thats a good question Dom... The official answer? It fires its nukes at some 'unfortunate neighbor'. The real answer? It successfully defects, and either Dra-pol, or someone else gets their hands on it." Luciello's response was firm, and also highly accurate.

"Okay, Lia, you know what to do. I have to get back to Mario on this."

Park slammed the table, her face red. She waited a few minutes before calming down.

"Contact all forces in the area," she said. "Deploy them on a wartime footing. Now."

"But Madame-" Qiao began.

We thank Xiaguo for this great offer and will allow almost unlimited access to our National Military Net. I think this will help our efforts immensely, and I am deeply concerned for the safety of all involved nations. It is with a heavy heart that I say this, but I think the only way we can stop this conflict is by sinking the submarine, I hope and pray that I am wrong. However we should all prepare for immediate action and we all must be willing to commit such an act against our wayward friend. Thank you all.

"There is one more variable," Lt Chun said before everyone could leave. "Sung Chansuk's daughter, Sung Hyunsoo.

"She is commanding officer of Aisho a submarine probably several days behind her father; if she could reach him and persuade him to desist, we may yet be saved from a catastrophe. But the solution may be complex; it may require beaming a ULF or UHF transmission to the elder Sung's submarine, piggybacking it off ships in the area. NEAR THE PEARL SEA

The klaxon sounded.

"Con, sonar! Torpedoes in the water! The Pearl Sea just opened up on the LRR corvettes!"

"Evasive manouvres! Get us out of the way!" The captain yelled in fright, his attempt to sneak up on the Pearl Sea now in shatters. "Arm torpedoes and prepare to fire! Send this message to the Pearl Sea:"

"We have all lost family and friends in the Drapol War, I have lost a nephew, but what you are doing will only ensure that thousands of Hudecian families will be in mourning before the week is done. We cannot allow this to happen. Surrender your vessel or we will open fire."

********* East China Sea - Hudecian Fleet near Northern Fury *****

"Sir, someone just fired torpedoes at the Drapol vessels!"

"Who, was it us?!" The XO nearly shouted.

"No sir, none of our vessels have fired," the sonar officer replied.

"Send a message to the Drapol vessels tell them we did not fire, possibly the rogue submarine" the XO highly doubted the Drapol would believe them without actions. "Target that bastard sub and sink her..."

P-3 Orions launched their deadly cargo into the sea, all targeted towards the Northern Fury.

Under normal circumstances this would have been considered an act of war, and perhaps the decision to fire was not a good one, but under the circumstances, one might be able to forgive the XO for his decision. After all, with torpedoes heading towards the Drapol vessels, they were only minutes from another war. Something had to be done quickly.

However, the Hudecian fleet remained ready in case the Drapol didn't believe them. The main fleet was at highest alert and prepared for the worst.

IC:

Sailing on the fringes of the huge Dra-pol Yellow Sea fleet, the LRRNS Smokestack Lightnin' is not terribly surprised to find torpedos being thrown at it.

"Turn bow-on! Launch countermeasures!"

The corvette ejects countermeasures packets into the ocean, while the helmsman turns the corvette to face the oncoming torpedos, their logic being to present them with a small a target area as possible, and if the torpedos do hit they will hit the bow, reinforced for icebreaking in the Bering Sea.

"Sonar, where is the bugger?"

The sonar operator shouts out a bearing, and immediately RBU-6000s are shot into the water, hoping at least to confuse the torpedos, but which still are quite lethal to submarines.

On the deck, crewmen launch the ship's six homing torpedos at the Pearl Sea, a move copied by the other 15 Corvettes in the area.

The Pearl Sea would probably pick up the sound of 7 Sovremennys and 10 Krivaks rushing into the area at sprint speed, pinging incessantly. The sound of RBU-6000s hitting the water and homing torpedos firing is also present.

The majority of the torps streak past the narrow hull of the Corvette, earning cheers from the crew, but several hundred meters away, the Red Rooster takes a hit bow-on.

Nimrods quickly arrive on-scene, dropping sonar bouys.

Things, on the whole, do not look good for the Pearl Sea.

On land, SA-22 sites go wild. Missiles are put at maximum readiness, as radars search the skies for missiles.

(The attachment shows the placement of ASW weapons on the Howlin' Wolf class of corvette, essentially a modified Grisha.)

Most of the Drapoel vessels in the target area responded with rapid course corrections and all-out sprints, often at thirty to forty-odd knots, some vessels aiming to run torpedoes out of fuel or to charge them down and dodge by. One Tiburon Class patrol craft failed to pin-point incoming torpedoes and the 38metre vessel was ripped apart on impact, with more than forty Drapoel being cast into the sea.

Other vessels, for there were many on hand, began to shower the water between themselves and the incoming warheads, launching depth charges and mortar rounds by the dozen. The few incoming torpedoes presented little problem against the wall of opposition, and seconds later the hostile vessel was being closely hunted by countless vessels and helicopters, with the sea filled by sonar bouys. Any none Drapoel vessel in the area was almost sure to get a hail of ASW mortar shells or torpedoes, or cannon and rocket fire be it on the surface. To the CPRD it mattered little if innocent vessels were caught in the backlash- they had an excuse, and there's almost no way it could come to war.

The LRR corvettes begin recieving cannon fire from the Dra-pol ships, and it irritates them very much.

"WHAT THE HELL?!?!?! Get me on the radio to the Dra-pol ships."

The captain of the Smokestack Lightnin' sends an angry radio transmission to the Dra-pol fleet.

"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? WE ARE BEING FIRED UPON BY YOUR SHIPS!"

The badly burning Red Rooster quickly slides underwater, leaving a gaggle of sailors on the water's surface, bobbing up and down in the waves. The Smokestack lightnin' moves to pick them up, but two are killed instantly by cannon fire. The corvette's dual 23mm mount swivels to face the offending Dra-pol vessels.

Meanwhile, the surfaced Alukas also take heavy fire. Captain Young stands on the conning tower, waving frantically at the Dra-pol vessels firing upon his sub.

The sight of a Kirov battlecruiser bearing down on the Dra-pol light vessels might quiet things down a little bit, however.

Even as several Drapoel vessels begin to turn their attention away from the apparently innocent LRR ships and back to the sub-surface hunt (offering no appology, of course), the number of aircraft scrambled was increased in response to the movement of larger surface assets such as the Kirov. 1st generation jets such as the S-5 along with a smaller number of KJ-1 configured to carry anti-shipping missiles and anti-submarine torpedoes were screeching out across the Yellow Sea.
The weight of response would be typical of a Republic absolutely steadfast in its intention to defend the modern shape of its borders, resolute in asserting that never again would there be 'a Hamhung'. The search grid was fanned out around the believed possible area from which the torpedoes may have come, even if that did mean putting helicopters over southern waters.

The guns and torpedoes on the Hudecian frigate fired on any Drapol vessel that targeted the sinking ship.

Hudecian command was screaming at all the vessels to get out of there and to hold their fire, but to the captains and crewmen on the ships under attack, it was difficult if not impossible not to retaliate as the casualties mounted.

"We should order all our troops ashore to S. Hanguk immediately, we have over 160 000 in the region ready to go. They should all be deployed." General Yang was insistent.

"If we do, Drapol may decide to invade immediately, we can't afford a war yet.... "

"We already have a war going on! Our ships are under attack, and despite our protests they are continuing to fire. A show of force is necessary, Drapol must understand that continuing this will only cause them more grief than us." Admiral O'Brian argued.

"Alright!" Admiral Smetka shouted quieting his subordinates. "Hudecian ships have authorization to fire if fired upon, enough of this sitting duck nonsense. Hudecian troops will remain on high alert and will prepare to land in S. Hanguk should hostilities escalate further."

Orders were quickly sent to all vessels. Authorization to engage Drapol vessels granted if Drapol vessels fired first, with the intent to disengage.

The scene in the Yellow Sea became much more turbulant as the Hudecian warships became less concerned with the E. Islandian sub and more with the Drapol boats.

"Confirmed, sir," sonar said. "Drapoel are firing on the others."

"How could they have gotten so close to the Hudecians and LRR ships without being sunk?" Soon wondered, even as the torpedoes rushed straight towards other Drapoel ships in the area. "Prepare the EMP; get ready to detonate. Inform Pearl Sea that we will be detonating an EMP."

"Captain Sung replies that he is about to do the same thing," communications reported.

"Good," Soon said. "Tell him we're setting it off now; to achieve maximum effect, he should set it off about ten seconds or so afterwards, and we will cover his exit with another EMP."

"Captain Sung verifies," communications replied. "He says 'see you at Matsu Dome.'"

"Contact Hudecian ships," Soon said.

"Channel open, sir," comm replied.

"'Hudecian destroyer, this is Captain Soon Xiuwei of Northern Fury, out of Red Group Staging Area. We will cover your escape from the Drapoel ships; rest assured, cruise missiles from allied submarines will arrive in-" he checked his watch "five minutes. Good luck, and stay afloat till then."

In the sub's weapons information station, officers were busy relaying final firing coordinates to three Zhou class SSBNs from Matsu Dome (fitted, of course, with conventional missiles, lest nuclear war break out), whose cruise missiles were readied. Within minutes, target taskings were finished, and the Zhous opened their missile tubes.

Fifty advanced cruise missiles sputtered to the surface, their caskets breaking in the proccess and the missiles roaring out of their containers, headed for Drapoel fleets.

"Thanks to Soon," Sung said, "we can now prepare to-"

"Captain, fast movers closing in on us from all sides!" sonar replied. "Too many to track."

"Countermeasures!" Sung ordered. "All stop main engines, full power to caterpillar drives; prepare the sonic wave, and alert Soon's submarine. Deploy Masker system."

A new prototype weapon, only ten submarines in the Navy were currently outfitted with them. Pearl Sea, being one of the newest craft, was installed with one; the principle behind it utilized a sonic shockwave to destroy and detonate incoming torpedoes, although it did incapacitate sonar operators.

Matsu Dome had a similar array.

"Sonic wave ready," weapons replied.

Sung's hand descended ont he control, and in seconds, an ear splitting sonic wave screeched out over hte East China Sea. Several torpedoes were detonated prematurely, and Sung slammed down on the EMP button imemdiately afterwards.

That did not stop, however, three LRR torpedoes from still approaching.

"Contacts in acquisition mode!" sonar yelled. "They're incoming!"

"Noisemakers!" Sung ordered. "Brace for impact!"

Three explosions shuddered, in quick succession, in close proximity to the Pearl Sea, rocking the submarine violently even as it headed forwards. Immediately, the submarine's forward compartments began to flood, although self sealing foam and frantically working damage control parties managed to divert the gushing water to the ballast and slow the rush to a trickle with fast molding patches of spongesteel composite.

"Report!" sung ordered.

"Missile room reports missile tubes 1-4 are disabled," damage control replied. "Missile guidance system has been heavily damaged, and we are relying on manual control to get the other missile tubes operating. Six ICBMs are down; Slayer Green and nuclear warheads have remained in their containment zone, however, and are safe from spreading across the ship."

"Time till repairs are complete?" Sung demanded.

"Three hours," the man replied.

He swore. "Set course for Nagusha Approach," he ordered. "We have to trust that no one yet knows about this from Matsu Dome."

The LRRN very rapidly makes itself scarce. Hopefully, some of the torpedos and RBU-6000s fired at the Pearl Sea hit home, but if not, let's hope Dra-pol ABM defenses are up to scratch.

However, Sonar operators hear the detonation of three torps long after all the others had gone, and after the sonic countermeasure was fired. With luck, the Pearl Sea was damaged, so was the LRRN thinking.

However, with one corvette down, several ships damaged, and a war brewing, the LRRN can't really afford to stick around.

It was a bluff and a stretch, but maybe it would give the Northern Fury's captain enough doubt to wait for further instructions.

Most of the little Drapoel vessels had given-up firing on surface vessels that were clearly not their intended targets, though it had taken a couple of minutes given the highly confusing nature of the situation, and the Drapoel inexperience in marshalling large fleets of ships. A couple of Tiburon Class patrol boats, the slowest Drapoel vessels involved, were amongst the last to continue lobbing 75mm shells around for minutes after the initial exchanges, but these were beginning to break-off, one by one, by the time new dramatic events began to occur.

The launch of cruise missiles brought to bear a large number of KJ-1 attack planes and Mi-14 helicopters, previously loitering in the area in the hopes of detecting the rogue submarine. Countless little S-5 fighters swept down from all directions, following their manifesto of expendability in attempting to intercept cruise missiles, even if it meant crashing into them. Cannon fire, rocketry, and IR-guided AAMs came before suicide. The little ships themselves sprinted at between 39 and 49knots, except for those awkward Tiburons, which made barely 26 knots and generally turned their rear-mounted rocket batteries towards incoming missiles, filling the air with dozens of cheap countermeasures per boat.

Ashore, imported modified Citadel radar continued to scan for ballistic missile launches or for other unwanted intrusion, and would trigger the launch of many dedicated fighters should hostile aircraft come within five or six hundred kilometres of Drapoel soil.

Across both borders, vast Assault Divisions previously gearing up for mass exercises began to return their posture towards the frontiers as underground rails and chains of humanity above brought war materials to the borders.

East China Sea

"How could Sung have betrayed our nation?" Soon wondered. "Pearl Sea is probably under orders to kill those damned North Koreans!"

"But why would a Hudecian ship lie to us?" his first officer asked, even as he kept an eye on the battle screens.

"I dont know," Soon said. "But I doubt this is the case. Unless Red Group command says otherwise, the Zhous will probably keep on launching the cruise missiles. In the meantime, where is Chansuk?"

"they're gone," sonar replied. "Slipped away several minutes ago, towards Nagusha Approach."

"This time of year?" Soon asked in disbelief. "It's frantic as hell."

"What shall we say to the Hudecians?" comm asked.

"What can we say?" Soon asked back. "The missiles are on site in another minute. I cant possibly hit all of them.."

"We can use the EMP," weapons replied. "And the sonic missile."

Northern Fury carried six experimental sonic missiles; operating on the same principle as the sonic array on Pearl Sea, sonic missiles were basically missiles with warheads that emitted a sonic wave, in order to destroy any weapons.

"Fine," Soon said. "We have no choice; we probably have to take the Hudecians for their word. Relay a message to Matsu Dome, and piggyback it off of any working transmitters on the sea floor: Pearl Sea is compromised, repeat, Pearl Sea is compromised. Take Captain Sung Chansuk into custody, but do not antagonize him. Try to allow him into the base, and arrest him there."

"Sonic missile ready!" weapons replied.

"Fire!" Soon ordered.

two sonic missiles roared into the air, breaking the surface of the ocean and immediately accelerating, hitting three hundred feet. Above, the second wave of Islandian cruise missiles were just coming into view, and, with an earsplitting roar, the sonic missiles detonated.

Almost all of the second wave of missiles was wiped out.

"Disaster averted for now," Soon said. "Navigation! Plot a course to Nagusha Approach. Comm, get in touch with command. Full ahead, and switch on auxiliary and main caterpillar drives. Masker system to full power; prepare countermeasures array. Rig for silent running, and return us to Matsu Dome."

Hundreds of sonar buoys had by now been scattered into the Yellow Sea, hundreds of hulls remained afloat, and dozens of aircraft, both fixed and rotary wing, continued to scour the seas, resolved that anything under the waves of the Yellow Sea not quickly found to be Drapoel or Chinese would be destroyed. This made the uncertain border area in the south a rather dangerous place to be, but nobody had contacted DaKhiem directly since the crisis began, so one could only assume that everybody was happy with the situation...

Many of the less sophisticated Drapoel aircraft and boats became engaged in patroling the approximate border area, making sure of no prying into the state of Drapoel casualties during the brief exchanges of fire.

The LRR humanitarian and engineer units look on in disgust as the Hudecian army does things that many generals would shoot themselves before contemplating. The highly trained LRR medical staff had quickly found out that the Hudecian 'humanitarians' knew nothing about their field.

Not exactly in a position, to complain, however, they continue their work. Engineers still operate all over the country, decontaminating areas and destroying unexploded ordenance, under the protection of four armored divisions.

Meanwhile, off the coast of Magadan, the bodies of 83 LRRN sailors are comitted to the deep. It was not close to the number of sailors killed in the Korean war nuclear exchange, or the soldiers killed in the fighting, but it was actually the second largest single loss of personnel. As the body of Midshipman 1st class Moam Escher slides under the water, the sky opens up in a torrential downpour, not in the least bit uncommon for this time of year.

The Magadan coastal artillery fires a salute, and the damaged ships head for the sprawling harbor complex, carved out of the stone cliffs, for repairs. They would, in all likelihood be sent back to the blighted penninsula once repairs were made.

Son House corvette crews thank the gods that they don't have to go overseas, while the troops of the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th Guards armored divisions prepare for deployment.

Seargent Roger Taylor, formerly captain of the 56th airborne, heaves his heavy bergen into the back of a TGB-20AL truck, then his rifle, and watches as the rest of the troops in his squad hop in. Now part of the 3rd Guards armored, he finds himself again in harms way.

"Come on, Brewster. Get up there."

The last private jumps in, and then he is lifted into the back of the truck, which drives towards the divison's position. He found the more easygoing tank infantrymen better to be in charge of than the stiffly trained paratroopers, and had no doubts about their combat ability. He replaced a seargent who was killed in the fighting around Andong, and most of the troops in the division had either seen fighting, or were brought in from the, infantry divisions which, although relatively inexperienced, are some of the best troops in the world when it comes to anti-tank and engineering tasks.

As the truck drives towards the division's marshalling area, it joins a convoy of other TGB-20ALs, guarded by SAM and AAA, as well as IFVs and MBT-6 tanks. The squad would probably be put in a brand new SEP APC, of which all ten armored divisions had 10,000 total.

Captain Taylor is not happy in the least. The unit was scheduled to be replaced by the 6th Armored later in the week, and he had lost most of the men in his old company in the battle for Gumi, including Seargent Harrison, who died several months earlier from his injuries. The thought of seeing more of his troops killed is not a good one.

"You know how Matsu Dome is," Soon replied. "And besides, when I see Drapoel ships-"

"Yes, I know," Whirlpool's captain replied. "But not now; we are hunting for Pearl Sea, and Chansuk."

"Chansuk?" Soon asked. "DId he really defect? Or go rogue?"

"That he did, Xiuwei," he replied. "But we need to bingo back to Matsu Dome; as much as I would like to sink Drapoel, we have to find Chansuk first."

"Understood. Northern Fury out," Soon said, then sighed. "Caterpillars only. Full ahead on all drives, and give me 110 percent power from reactors. Prepare EMP, and fire off one last torpedo at the nearest Drapoel contact."

"Ready," weapons replied.

"Fire!"

An EMP exploded ove rthe East China Sea, bathing the ships in shades of orange, and knocking down communications for kilometers. As the unrecorded count of Drapoel casualties ticked a few characters higher, the EI submarine's last assault brought massive response. The broad vacinity from which ordinance was dispensed was pounced-upon by over-flying KJ-1.

Nuclear depth charges begain to rain-down from the sky, with little regard being given to the three closest surface vessels of the People's Navy. Whatever was down there would die, and the CPRD -believing that its foe was few in number- was prepared to expend massive resources against it. The idea was to give the impression that Dra-pol could afford to throw resources of this magnitude at any problem, no matter how slight. In reality, of course, it would mean the suspension of any number of planned training operations over the next year, but who'd know the difference?

On the down side, these fishing grounds would be out of operation for some time...

The bombs kept coming. The Republic's ABM defences had by now activated their total strength, knowing that Beth Gellen replenishment of their limited missile stocks was en route since before the crisis broke.

Finally, DaKhiem spoke to the world, insisting that this sort of pathetic indiscipline would be punished if not quickly accounted for. The Drapoel culture of superiority grew as communists across the nation were boulstered in their belief in the inferiority of foreigners. An immediate result would be the further exclusion from positions of authority of pale South Koreans.

The large mass of surface ships that comprised the 3rd fleet immediately changed course and began a direct route to Matsu Dome. Combat Air Patrols are being flown constantly by Combattente multi-role naval fighters from the Uccellino del Mare class Carriers as well as F-35B's from the smaller Andrea Doria class Carriers, supported by E-2D Super Hawkeyes.

While the 3rd Fleet was in standard fleet arrangement, the ships of the 5th Pursuit Group were scattered about in a mad hunt for the rogue submarine, and are going to join up along the way to Matsu Dome. They are increasingly vulnerable as they are vastly outnumbered culmitively not even considering the fact that they are completely alone, the largest groups consisting of 3 ships. The same can be said for the submarines of the 13th Submarine Force, which were greatly scattered as well. They will be avoiding the Drapoel fleets whenever possible and maintain a maximum contact distance. Upon closing with a Drapoel vessel, communication will be immdediately established to help avoid confusion.

"Chosun People's Republic? Nice name, I suppose Ancient Korean culture is better than Viking," the voice said through the back of a leather chair.

"Yes, Mr. President, at least their leader doesn't claim to have come back from the dead," joked Stefano Ferrucci, Senior Presidential Advisor.

"Well, Dominic, what do you think we should do?" Mario Corleone said, as he turned around to face him.

"Not much that we aren't already doing. I don't think we should upgrade our Strategic Missile Forces' readiness level, that will just make matters more complicated", replied Dominic Somma from his seat, a few feet away from the President. The chair was actually quite uncomfortable, but probably far older than his long-dead grandfather.

"Dra-pol doesn't really concern me right now, I just want to take that Sub out of the equation. Calogero fill Dominic in."

"Yes sir," responded Calogero Ianazzo, Director of the Agrigentian Intelligence Agency (AIA). He turned to Dominic and started the same pitch he had given the President just minutes earlier. "Mr. Somma, we have received several intelligence reports, all of them twice confirmed, and it appears that Bonstock is attempting to make contact with the Rogue Submarine. Following the public disclosure incident with Xiaguo, the Bonstockian Navy let out quite a bit of warships, unscheduled and without warning. They are obviously looking for the Pearl Sea, and I doubt they want to sink it."

"I should have figured. Well, that must be avoided at all costs. We can't let them get control of that technology, nor that knowledge. Captain Chansuk knows far too much about our training and tactics to get away with defection," stated Somma. No self-respecting Agrigentian truly trusted Bonstockians, especially considering its current leader's Viking namesake.

"The Dra-pol fleets have prevented my ships from conducting proper ASW Operations, but hopefully we will get them on the way to Matsu Dome," chimed in Admiral Lia Antanato.

"Speaking of which, have the Islandians been able to make contact with the subs there?"

"I believe contact was made with a single ship, however I do not know how far the information has been relayed. All the launches have ceased at least", answered Lia. She was working directly with the East Islandian Navy now.

"For all we know the Red Squadron could turn and fire its missiles at us!" Ferrucci blurted out.

"The Islandians would never do that, especially a vet like Sung. Hopefully we will still be able to reason with him", said President Corleone, his calm, collected voice obliterating the awkward silence that had descended on the cavernous room.

"That is doubtful, Mario. It is too bad Balducci is in Iansisle now, I think he would have a better chance talking sense into the man. They treaded some of the same water", replied Master General Luciello, CINC High Command. "But by the time he gets here it would be too late, and he has his plate full." He turned to the woman sitting across from him. "Lia, you were a Submariner, do you think you could talk to Chansuk?"

"I might have been a fast attack jockey, but its worth the try", CINC 3rd Fleet responded. "If I could get to the Umberto, I can probably send it an UHF, if it is willing to listen."

"This is all very doubtful, but it’s the only chance we have, if it doesn’t work, then we will have to sink it", said Luciello, realizing what that would mean.

"Okay, lets get to work on it. Calogero, keep us updated. You are all dismissed," ordered the president, rather softly. "Gandolfo, you stay here," he added, talking to the CINC-HC.

In the days following the provocative Hudecian announcements, the frequency of infiltration attempts into the ROK increased significantly, with little Bap Class minature submarines making 9 knot hops below the surface to isolated points on the south's coasts, deploying agents in batches from one to six persons strong. No doubt some would be spotted and forced to turn around before ever deploying boats or frogmen, and other agents may be spotted coming ashore, but few would give-up without a fight. The story of how two agents stayed on the run for several months and killed the better part of a dozen ROKA personnel sent to catch them before being defeated is still sometimes told to enthusiastic if sometimes nervous recruits.

A few had jobs lined up in all sorts of places -factories, universities, airports- arranged by sympathisers sometimes on the ground for years in advance. One item of significance was the inclusion of a small number of ethnic South Koreans in the infiltration teams, as parts of the population began to embrace the Kurosite Revolution. Several had been shot or imprisoned after being accused of trying to use the missions to defect or become double agents, but such sad possibilities did persist to a limited degree.

LRRN patrol boat teams locate and turn back many Dra-pol teams. Some are unlucky enough to stumble into a truck-mounted ASM or SAM battery, and have their lives cut short by GPMG fire, in general.

The landscape of the ROK is the setting for many a dramatic chase, pitting Drapoel special forces against LRRA and allied mechanised infantry.

Where agents are discovered in the city, teams of police often supported by BMP-2s and BRDM series APCs storm apartment buildings, and after several seconds of automatic gunfire, several bodybags would emerge from the building.

In the hills outside Jinan, a company of LRRA mechanised infantrymen vigirously pursue a Banat (or Red Bamboo?) agent through the trees. The crackle of gunfre from the Ak-74s of the LRRA troopers can be heard for several miles, as bullets lodge into treetrunks.

"Keep on his tail!" calls Captain Ibrahim Suryan to the troops of his company as they run up the hill. The Ksp-95 teams have little to do except lug their heavy MGs up the relatively steep hill.

Ibrahim finishes off his clip with a burst towards the running Drapoel agent, and discards it in mid stride. If there was anything to say about the physical condition of LRRA infantrymen, it is that they are great runners, not by choice but by necessity. Even up the hill, they make a good pace. While there might not be nearly as many trees in LRR, the hills are quite similar.

************ Pohang ***************

Within hours of the Hudecian announcement, Pohang had become a fortress as Hudecian units came out of hiding to announce their presence. Anti-air batteries were uncovered and weapons were distributed.

Over 40 000 combat troops were in the area when the announcement was made, and that number soon doubled as the Hudecian army was less secretive about its deployments.

The pre-prepared deployment of over 500 combat aircraft was made as quickly as Hudecian air traffic controllers could handle them.

************ Hudecian Korean Command (Pohang) ***********

"Sir, we've received reports from LRR and allied commands that the rate of inflitration by the Red Bamboo is increasing rapidly, probably in response to our announcements," Colonel DeFonc was blunt about the causes.

"Hmm... get me some of them..." General Yang ordered. "Alive, I want you to capture them and their sympathizers alive and to interrogate them."

Capturing sympathizers would be easier said than done. Although the nuclear strikes had in many ways solidified the support of the Korean people behind the allied forces, there were still some sympathizers for the north. Those who were sympathizers tended to be very discreet about their feelings, making them harder to track.

Still, the Hudecian military intelligence hadn't been sitting on its hands this entire time. They had been tracking several suspected sympathizers for weeks and were watching to see if anyone suspicious visited them.

"Our naval units will begin patrolling Korean waters within the week," Admiral Smetka added. "We'll catch more of them that way."

Strangely, the sudden revealing of major hostile forces in the South, though a move highly likely to be seen by such a paranoid state as the CPRD as the prelude to an assault, was not met by major shifts in the disposition of Drapoel forces across the border. Of course there already stood some millions of troops and thousands of aircraft, but it would have been ordinary for the rate of deep fortification to increase.

In fact the rate of defence-building continued to decrease, much as it had since the secret creation of Project Mago.

Ibrahim's company reaches the top of the hill just as the Red Bamboo agent disappears into the underbrush down the hill, dressed in a Hyundai shipyards uniform.

Ibrahim takes out a grenade, pulls the pin, and rolls it into the bushes, as do many of the troops in his company. Others aim RPGs and send the rockets into the brush.

"The Drapol are doing.... nothing...." Colonel DeFonc reported the next morning. "Well... actually, they are more slowing their constructions..."

"Its not because we scared them... we were expecting another assault to come soon after our deployment," General Howe stated categorically. "We deployed expecting an imminent attack on the south.. but now that is not materializing. Has Drapol mellowed out?"

General Yang snorted loudly. "Hardly, they are probably busy plotting in some other manner. But then again, it does seem to be more just us versus them. Maybe they are ignoring this fly?"

In the ROK, most of the infiltrators were Banat, and as much civilian as soldier. Some were elderly or just teenagers, not all were male, and most tried to slip into ordinary lives without causing an incident. During the Unification, several professors at Seoul university had revealed themselves as long-standing Banat agents, and others were able to regulate much of the take-over of industry because they sat on the boards of large companies.

A minority of infiltrators were Red Bamboo, which was now reorganised under the Banat, replacing the Banat Combat Corps with a commando force perhaps three million strong. Nobody outside and few inside the CPRD knew who sat on top of the new Red Bamboo, but comrades Cheiy, Hozaro, and even Hotan himself had been 'accused' of direct control. Whatever the truth, these people -members of the Warrior Class- were the toughest and most fanatical that the Kurosite Revolution could muster. While the rest of the Banat agents were people like dear old Mrs.Park, the one who smiles at you each morning on the bus and works at the retirement home where several ex-servicemen reside alongside parents of current officers, the Red Bamboo infiltrators were men like comrade He.

Slightly disoriented by the grenade bursts that'd singed the uniform he stole from a murdered dock worker (now welded inside the hull of some slip-ridden vessel), He was trying to get to any one of several residences he'd rented with government money earned from drugs trafficking. It, like the others, was modest and cheap, and now rigged with booby-traps. The agent knew that at least one of his flats had been found; he'd been running since seeing security forces moving in. He didn't know whether the traps had yeilded any result, and just kept running in the hopes of temporarily shaking his pursuers. He'd five kilos of opiates left to sell on the streets, and an obligation to see the cash heading back north, and he'd only yesterday hidden two QW-2 surface-to-air missiles in a ditch, and needed to survive long enough to tell somebody where.

E company of the 2nd armored is hot on the tail of the Red Bamboo infiltrator. While somewhat hindered by the brush, it does not stop the company long, and Ibrahim emerges to see the blue uniform running down the hill in front of him.

"Come on! We've almost got him!"

Strangely, the first to come through the bushes after him are the two Ksp-95 teams, still lugging the heavy MGs and belt ammo.

Ibrahim starts down the hill at full tilt, followed by the rest of his company. He is soon only meters away from the Red Bamboo agent, who appears to be running out of steam.

Unable to go much further at the same pace, Ibrahim stops for a moment and raises his rifle. Just before the infiltrator crosses the small dirt road ahead, he empties his clip into the infiltrator's back, on full automatic.

Hit several times as he fell hard, knees first, Sub-Lieutenant He's last breath was drawn by the time his body dropped forward and hit the earth with a slight crunch of dirt and pebbles. The uniform clinging bloodily to his corpse bore the name of the missing Hyundai employee, as well as a few dried spots of that man's blood. A little 7mm Baby Nambu automatic pistol was still tucked inside the uniform with just one round spent (it may be found still lodged in the dead worker, too weak to sail clean through his frame), while He clasped tightly to his belly a traditional Drapoel short sword basically similar to a Japanese wakizashi (though traditionally weilded as if a primary weapon in little Drapoel hands), one hand to the hilt and the other clasping the scabbard from which the blade was partially unsheathed. Perhaps surprisingly, comrade He still wore two little pins, one depicting the Drapoel wheel of progress, the other bearing the flattering likeness of Kurosian I The Greatest Director. They were fixed inside the stolen uniform, facing He's heart. Besides some opiate residue on his hands, there was little else of note to be revealed by He's death.

Captain Suryan walks over to He's body, his Ak-74 shouldered.

The other 90 men in his company gather around, speechless. Ibrahim bends down and checks the fallen He's pulse. Turning him over, Ibrahim notes the man's age. While most LRRMFs soldiers, sailors, pilots, and crew are in their late 20's to start, He appears only in his late teens or early 20's.

"He's dead."

Ibrahim and several other infantrymen help the company medics lift He's body into the Bv-206T ambulence, and his company climbs aboard that and it's three AMV wheeled carriers for the ride back to 'base.' Ibrahim takes the two pins and puts them in an envelope, and tosses the pistol, with its magazine removed, into a ditch.

"Dive!" Soon ordered. "Alert Whirlpool. Tell them we have to separate; someone has to bring the news to Matsu Dome. Take us to dive limit!"

"Explosions!" weapons shouted. "Nuclear ones too! The Geiger counter is going off the bar!"

"Massive damage in sections five through nine," damage control reported. "Repair crews report massive flooding. We have to vent our tanks and get out of here sir! We cant take anything deeper!"

"Caterpillar drive is off-line," engineering reported. "Containment of nuclear reactor is being breached sir. We cant take any more."

Soon cursed. "Fire all available cruise missiles," he ordered. "Just fire them! Get them the closest tasking, and fire them off at targets in Drapol!"

The missile silo doors opened, and Northern Fury managed to fire off three conventional cruise missiles before a depth charge slid into one of the open missile tubes and detonated.

Whirlpool's sonar officer didnt have to say anything. No one did.

Aboard ballistic missile submarine Pearl Sea, Sung Chansuk commanding
Nagusha Approach, somewhere under the East China Sea

The nuclear depth charges had further incapacitated Pearl Sea, far as they were from the submarine. The Pearl Sea's caterpillar drives were now down, and with one working missile tube, two working torpedo tubes, and half a propeller, it was definitely the worse for wear.

However, at this moment, Lee Jaehyun decided to make his move. A twenty eight year old engine officer, he quietly crept over to the auxiliary console.

Once there, he unholstered his pistol and shot his two compatriots quickly.

He tapped in a few controls, and wiped the sweat off his face. Lee had pulled strings to get himself assigned to Pearl Sea, and now it was his turn to finally reverse the decades long discrimination visited upon the North by the nations of the so called 'free' world.

Lee's hand hovered over the button, and then quickly pressed it. Hopefully, his partner would tend to the rest....

*****
"Sir, engineering has disabled primary control conduits," weapons reported. "I cant get the torpedo tubes on-line."

The intercom buzzed; Sung picked it up quickly, and pressed the transmit button.

"What's the matter down there, Joon-suk?" Sung asked, referring to his chief engineer.

"Joon-suk is dead," Jaehyun told SUng.

"Lee?" Sung asked, puzzled. "BUt what- never mind. We'll talk later. Get me control back. We're sitting in the water-"

"I'm afriad thats not possible, Captain Sung," Jaehyun said. "I'm taking command of the ship, and I'm cutting off hte atmosphere to the control room."

"Traitor," Sung hissed. He slammed downt he phone, and began to issue orders. The command crew slipped on small compressed air tanks (the size of one's thumb) with five minutes worht of air, and quickly made their way out.

**********
Lee laughed.

The fools. They had believed him.

He triggered the vent control system, and within minutes, he watched as Slayer Green iissued from vents all over the ship.

The crew died within minutes, unprotected save fro the missile techs in the forward areas.

No matter, Lee knew. He triggered the satellite communications array, and made a call to the Drapoel leadership.

Drapoel state radio interrupted the day's sixth playing of Reunification Rainbow, piped into every collective and every tower block without the luxury of an off switch, to report on an explosion at a munitions dump near Haeju, and the shooting-down of, 'several objects believe to have been cruise missiles' in the vacinity. Injuries were said to have occured, but the four deaths were not mentioned.

In DaKhiem there came several minutes of hushed discussion at the Central Directorature's primary communications wing. The eventual result was the rousing of comrade Admiral Li-Il, and the routing of Lee's call to the Admiral's command facilities at Namp'o.

The young Drapoel Admiralty was unsurprisingly suspicious, as would be the comrade Director when he was informed just moments later.

The Yellow Sea Fleet's single Kwon Class submarine resuce ship could be heard bringing its sleepy engines to life and clattering with the footfalls of an embarking crew, while civilian vessels were ceased to make at least some effort to assess the damage to the Drapoel surface vessels caught in the recent chaos.

Lee gasped as the Red Tide submarine's torpedoes sped towards his ship. He groaned, and keyed his comm.

"Soo Jung, can we destroy them?"

"Perhaps," his partner, an officer in the command room, replied. "But I'm not so sure. We need help; tell Drapol that, in order to prove ourselves, we will launch missiles at South Korea! Hopefully then they'll send aid."

"Excellent idea," Lee replied. He keyed another comm, and quickly spoke.

"Missile crews, this is Lieutenant Lee Jae-hyun. THe Captain and all control officers have been killed, and we need to survive in order to attack Drapol. Now listen carefully: we are under attack by a Red Tide submarine, and I need you to get the missile tubes working first."

"Missile tubes one and three are online," the head mechanic replied. "And torpedo tube three."

"Good," Lee said. He was relieved when he realized that he could slave functions of the submarine to his own console in engineering.

Sort of a one-man crew. Lee quickly triggered the EMP, and then followed it up with two torpedoes to the Red Tide submarine.

"Soo Jung!" he said quickly. "Manuever us! I will handle weapons and detection, and you keep us alive until our comrades come!"

"Understood," Soo Jung replied.

Meanwhile, Lee sent out another message to Drapol command, telling them that he was doomed if they did not decide to rescue him. As a sign of good faith, he would shoot off two missiles with Slayer Green, headed for South Korean population centers....

"Nuclear explosions detected above us," damage control reported, since they were the only ones with geiger counters. "Nuclear depth charges."

"Stay to the bottom," Hyunsoo commanded. "Status of contact?"

"Firing missiles at the Red Tide submarine," sonar replied.

"Get me bearings on both submarines," she ordered. "Tell the torpedo room to prepare for continuous fire."

At that moment, an EMP ripped through the area, downing many of Aisho's essential systems.

"Reboot immediately!" Hyunsoo ordered. "Set fire control to automatic; match bearings of Red Tide submarine and shoot."

"Ma'am, Pearl Sea is opening her torpedo doors!" sonar shouted. "One torpedo is headed in our direction!"

Hyunsoo cursed. "Countermeasures!" she cried. "Get me a sonic charge ready."

"Sonic array is ready," weapons reported. "Countermeasures room reports noisemakers and mobile submarine simulators away."

"It's not working!" sonar yelled. "They're still inbound for us!"

Hyunsoo swore again, and slammed her fist on the sonic array.

Two huge bursts of sound ripped across the ocean, scattering the circuits of the torpedo guidance systems and nearly rupturing the eardrums of the sonar operators aboard the other ships.

"Transmission!" Hyunsoo ordered.

A voice broke through on the comm system. "Commander Sung, stay out of this; your father's dead now. Since I dont wish to kill father and daughter, you would be best going your way-"

"Who is this?" Hyunsoo demanded.

"My name is Lee Jaehyun, and I am an engineering officer aboard Pearl Sea," Lee replied. "I released Slayer Green throughout the submarine minutes ago, and now I am planning to sink it. If-"

"Sink it?" Hyunsoo countered. "You're trying to stay afloat. Hang in there, help will be on-"

IC: The Hudecian LA class attack submarine Toronto confirmed for the Hudecian military command that the Pearl Sea was indeed sunk.

For many in the HPC, they would be getting their first break in over 16 hours. Still, the next shift would have to help reorganize the positioning of the Pacific fleets and decide what to tell the Hudecian public.

"It is of our opinion that the government exists primarily to protect the people from external threats so that they may live their lives free from fear and intimidation," Hudecian Defence Minister O'Hara announced to the High Command. "Should such events become widely known to the Hudecian public, it may cause panic that our navy is not well enough equipped to deal with the threat of even a single nuclear submarine. This is not advisable, especially in an election season."

O'Hara paused before continuing.

"Therefore, all knowledge of the Pearl Sea will be restricted to those who know now, and the truth about the recent events will be classified at a level 0 (highest classification level). All unnecessary documents are to be destroyed and all computers used during the operation will be seized by the HSP (Hudecian Secret Police)."

The group of generals and admirals sat silently.

"The public will be informed that the latest operations were in response to the Drapol invasion threat and that thanks to our quick action, a second invasion of the south was avoided. Deviation from said information will result in punishment of the severest kind."

A few of the officers squirmed uncomfortably in their chairs. O'Hara smiled on the inside, holding such power made him feel important and strong.

"DISMISSED!"
