NOTE: This Thread is to document and explain the technologies I have developed. The first post is a condensed version of some pre-Jolt threads with better explanations and theories behind the concepts. All the information here will be strictly on an Out-Of-Character basis.
The underlying theory behind the Posigravity Drive was first pioneered by the German mathematicians Theodor Kaluza and Oskar Klein. Einstein proved that Gravity arises from the four-dimensional curvature of space-time. Taking inspiration from his work, Theodor and Oskar worked to demonstrate how the electro-magnetic force arose from a fifth dimension. This way of thinking was unheard of back in 1919. According to the KK Theory, each point in normal space is actually a loop in the fifth dimension.
Studying higher-energy KK echoes of Z and Y bosons at the Imperial Greater Particle Accelerator in orbit above Sol, the research team were able to develop a practical means for generating quantum gravity. Engineering designs based on their equations resulted in the construction of the first Caplis generator, variations of which power the Posi-Grav vessels by accelerating them to speeds that allow them to slip into the fifth dimension, commonly called Space-Plus. The act of slipping into the fifth dimension is commonly called “changeover”.
The Posi-Grav drive reacts dangerously with strong gravity wells. The initial controlled experiment caused the research vessel to implode and condense into a 1 cm chunk. Obviously this not only destroyed the prototype, but all personal upon the ship were killed instantly. Luckily there were additional production models and several data back-ups and important personal were actually away from the ship at the time of the accident. Operation at very low power levels will allow a Posi-Grav vessel to approach a planet but they can never land. A ship cannot land on a planet, especially an inhabited one, while on drive. The results would be major destruction: a chunk of the planet's crust gouged out, tsunamis, super hurricane winds, and other nasty side effects too unpleasant to consider. Remember you would be introducing a singularity onto the surface on a planet. Things will disappear into its depths very quickly and noisly.
The ships computers must keep the field centered with respect to the fan and generator. If it gets too close, or too far ahead, the ship must be stopped and the drive field restarted. If the field starts oscillating, the resultant vibrations could shake the ship to pieces. A piece of matter impinging on the field at the moment of activation could result in a field inversion, turning the ship inside-out.
The computer handles these situations, and runs the ship. The pilots are aboard to make decisions and troubleshoot.
The drive field can be channeled somewhat and can provide electrical power to the rest of the ship. These systems include: Artificial gravity; posi-gravity (tractor) beams for handling cargo; a sophisticated sensor network, force screens for both stellar debris and defense; and ships weaponry
After observing the destruction caused by the initial testing of the prototype, the development of a torpedo armed with a KK projector and a short lived high output fusion reactor. The torpedo is shielded so its electronics cannot be detected. The torpedo is programmed to fall short of its target and act like a dud. After a few minutes, the Caplis generator will generate a quantum singularity about 10 meters away from the target on the opposite side from the torpedo. This will also pull the torpedo into the singularity but the target will most likely be its first meal and the torpedo, its desert. Once the torpedo is destroyed, it obviously stops feeding the singularity which will collapse within a few seconds. Alternately, the singularity can be targeted upon the vessel itself.
Further work with the research allowed theorists to develop equations that lead to the discovery of sending communications as resonating loops through the sixth dimension, called Space-Minus. This allows nearly instantaneous communication. Greater distances will need a signal booster so most communications are directed towards hubs and then passed onto its destination.
The development of the Torq Drive was the result of some quantum theorist wondering if it was possible to shift the mass of a vessel into another dimension, called Torq Space or T-Space, without needing to achieve near light speed or a Changeover. After studying Dark Matter and Dark Energy, the research team at the Imperial Greater Particle Accelerator was able to devise the equations that resulted in the Torq Drive. The engineers were able to build the Divination, the Empire’s first Torq Vessel. All tests yielded almost instantaneous transportation within the Sol system. The mass of the vessel was negated by the shift into T-Space, thus the light speed limit did not apply. The Divination was refitted and command was given to the Emperor’s nephew, Captain Bryce Galladu. On its maiden voyage, the Divination had its drive undergo a cascade effect after leaving the Sol system, creating a quantum star about 3 LY from Sol. Apparently the Torq Drive becomes unstable if it operates outside a strong gravitational field.
The combination of the Torq and Posi-Grav Drives seemed an obvious move. The new vessel type was called the Mirage Class, after the way a ship equipped with it will fade from view as its mass is shifted into T-Space leaving a ghostly after-image to mark where the ship was. The Navigator was the first to be refitted with the Mirage Drive.
