Chat Live! (Work out those RP kinks before posting! It works wonders!)

As many of you are doubtless aware, there exist NationStates chatrooms, particularly on irc.esper.net. IRC and other live chats help work out many kinks in RPs, helps coordinate with other players, and helps smooth things along. IM works, too, but IRC has proven very useful to both players and mods.

For those of you unfamiliar with IRC, but wishing to get in on the action:
1.) Download an IRC client (chat program), e.g., mIRC, (http://mirc.com) Trillian, (http://trillian.cc) GAIM, (http://gaim.sourceforge.net) X-Chat Aqua (http://xchataqua.sourceforge.net/), etc.

The most active chat server for Nationstates-related discussion is irc.esper.net. You'd select that as your server (under File-Options for mIRC, and in account setup for GAIM; for GAIM, make sure to select IRC protocol for that account) and for port, put 6667 (5555, 6666, 6667, 6668, 6669, 7000 all allegedly work.)

Type /join #internationalincidents in the prompt to join the International Incidents chatroom. Yes, I know it's not particularly active compared to the #nationstates channel most of the time, but if you stick around, it might become as active.

Other channels have included #nationstates, #nationstates_general, #nationstates_politics, #nationstates_technical, #themodcave(for when you need to get ahold of a NationStates mod in a hurry), #nationstates_underground, #nationstates_outcasts, #nationstates_diplomacy, #nationstates_rp, #internationalleaderslounge, #sport, #ns, and probably a few others I haven't heard about yet, as well as the inevitable private channels. Some of those are inactive, of course.

I'm also informed that a #nationstates channel exists on genesis.flashwirenetwork.net.

Indeed, there is X-Chat Aqua which works with Mac OSX

Beat me to it, Doujin. Yes, X-chat Aqua is just the thing. There are others, but this one's free, crucially, and works.

Okay, you Esper NS junkies. I need your help. I've got them screaming that I have a misconfigured proxy server, but wont tell me how or what, or even what the fix is. They've banned me from the servers entirely until I -PROVE- that I've fixed the issue. Which is emailing them the steps I took to resolve it.

Considering that for some reason this is taboo to speak of in many help channels (Dont know why), I've not had much luck in finding a solution. Any of you guys run into this issue? And get it fixed?

Yay, go #nationstates_outcasts, a great channel where you can talk about anything with almost no limitations, but plenty of fun! (and don't abuse the no limitations rule. Flaming and overall harassment won't be tolerated if I am complained to enough)

Does anyone actually go on the II channel?

Yes, but usually not more than 3 people are in there, and typically at most there will be one person in the channel who isn't plain out AFK. That will change if more people start hanging around, but for now it's probably going to stay mostly empty.

[OOC: I also think 'Trillian' is a Mac-based irc client, but I'm not 100% sure. I know xIRC is, though, or at least has a Mac-variant.

I unfortunately lack links, however. I'm sure you could find em with a search engine, though, if need be. :)]

I dont know. There's no way that NS 2 will even be able to come close to the depth offered by RPing. It'll probably just end up like Nukezone (www.nukezone.nu)

Does anyone know of any live chats that you don't need to download that are connected to the NationsStates game, such as yahoo or MS chat? If there aren't, any person who has an account with those live chats can start their own room, and that'd be good for those of us who can't download anything onto their computers.

Frankly I don't think we should be advertising IRC for people to use. I downloaded it, since then.
its caused me one argument thats made me leave my region. (#nasicournia)
I've joined the II one a couple of times, but its just empty. (#internationalincidents)
And of course I joined the general one, and am now utterly disgusted by the frankly pathetic immaturity of a few of the members. I've been kicked from the channel for no reason at all, plus of course unless you've stuck there for months on end or are friends already with everyone there, everyone just picks on you, I don't need to take that shit from anyone, and I don't recommend that anyone else does. (#nationstates_general)
Der Angst

You know, kicking is generally not taken seriously, as there is the whole autorejoin after being kicked thing... Heck, it is more a source of amusement than anything resembling seriousness.

Just a little hint.

Autorejoin? To me being kicked seems like a way of being told "I don't want you here". Besides, I think everyone in Nationstates_general found it highly amusing, Snowfox's being unable to leave me alone, and especially amusing Snowfox kicking me. High comedy for all, except of course me.
I disagree with your point. The argument I had in Nasi involved me repeatedly being kicked, each time I joined. Who was that supposed to amuse?
Der Angst

*Shrugs* Your choice.

Anyway, autorejoin == options (Alt + O), irc -> check 'rejoin channel when kicked'.

Just as a note, #internationalincidents has been revived once again, and is competing with #nationstates2 as the 3rd most active NS IRC channel. Feel free to join #internationalincidents if you have some input on the NS stickies, if you'd like to discuss the quality of II RP's, or if you wanna plan an RP with someone else.
Sanctaphrax
26-04-2005, 22:00
Yup, its been revived all right. Now there's some Op who thinks he's king of all in there too. Seriously, save yourselves the problems all of you, steer away from IRC. Its nothing but problems.
