The Soviet Bloc Air and Space Commission (SBASC) has announced it has successfully launched the Oleynik Space-Based Radio Observatory and Communications Station into geo-stationary orbit over Soviet Bloc.
The satellite's purpose is to provide ARSB scientists with an unhindered view of the cosmos, much like the former Hubble telescope. The only difference, this massive satellite contains an optical telescope as large as the Hubble as well as an advanced radio telescope. Combined with this is a communications radio dish as well as an extensive communications system to bolster the ARSB's satellite-based communications system. This satellite will also act as the main point of communication between the ARSB and its military satellites as well as its manned space stations. To defend itself against threats, the satellite will maintain an extensive defensive suite including selective/movable jamming systems, anti-radar systems, low-yield luanchable EMP warheads, and satellite decoys. The Oleynik will also fall under the protection of OMS-3, a nearby manned military space station with three Soyuz A3 space vehicles/satellite-killers. OMS-3 also maintains ABM defenses.
The satellite was launched aboard three LPSR IV payload launch vehicles and assembled in stationary orbit above the ARSB by two crews of cosmonauts from OMS-3, a military space station, and a space shuttle crew from the Zvezda space shuttle. Construction lasted nearly a week.
The project has costed the ARSB an estimated $3.3 Billion USD and nearly 6 years of construction and development. The first transmission was received by ground personnel nearly an hour after diagnostics were run on the newly assembled satellite. Some low-ranking government officials were overheard babbling to the media about extraterrestrials... They were promptly thrown into mental institutions and the government denies any allegations that this station is meant to communicate with other intelligent life in the universe.
