WOODSTOCK (ASP) -- In a move that was stunning in its decisiveness, Parliament approved legislation that transfers all civil rights and responsibilities previously associated with marriage into civil unions.
"This decision furthers our constitutionally-mandated separation of church and state," President Mike Sarzo said as he spoke from a bunker deep under Sarzonia. "Marriage is still a part of Sarzonian life and culture, but for couples to receive government benefits and responsibilities previously incumbent upon marriage, they must now get civil unions."
The measure ensures that same-sex and opposite-sex couples receive full benefits of marriage and churches retain their rights to determine their doctrines according to House Speaker Josh Williams, who sponsored the legislation.
Fred Wendt, a delegate from Bausch, led the opposition to the legislation, nearly killing it in a filibuster until Williams forced the legislation to a vote.
"That was dirty pool," Wendt said. "We got railroaded by that."
"It was a procedural issue. Enough delegates objected to extending debate to bring the issue to a quicker vote. When it got to the full floor, Wendt and his cronies didn't have a chance."
The measure takes effect by the end of the [RL] month. Marriage codes throughout the country are being rewritten to reflect civil unions.
"This measure does little more than recognize what we've been doing all along as it pertains to equal rights," Wolf Larssen, a lawyer for Sarzonia Pride said. "Sarzonia has tried to be a model for equal rights for all its citizens and they've taken a strong step."

We are secretly wiring 1 billion dollars to a secret bank account for Fred Wendt so he might use it to campaign for greater positions. :)

[OOC: By our constitution, he'd have to wait until I'm dead or I quit. And we definitely would find out about any such activities. :mp5:]

[OOC: I'd rather not. It would make for a great RP, but it's not one I'd like to do. Because then I can't be brought back from the dead.]
