http://www.pipian.com/stufforchat/gdpcalc.php?nation=your_name_here
http://www.thirdgeek.com/nseconomy.php?region=Your_Region_Here&nation=Your_Name_Here

Pipian takes your population and multiplies it by a GDP based on your economy. I know that if you put, for instance, "&defense=10&defenseprovided=10&militarybudget=10" after your name without the ""s, it'll give you 10% of your budget on defense. There's other ones like "&popspec=X", where X will be your population (if it's different from NS, like rezzed nations).

Thirdgeek takes statistics from the website and factors in tax, civil rights, political freedom, and other things. It also tracks what amount of funding you give to several categories (such as Defense, Healthcare, and Social Equality.)

Thirdgeek is becoming the accepted calculator of today, a lot of detail. You can ignore the national budget allocation stuff if you want, but it does provide a nice guideline.

Besides government expensitures (which I ignore- with the exception of Religion, all of the categories it gives me 0% for get money, and I have an insane 30% defense budget instead of 10-15...), Pipian and Thirdgeek are very similar (within ten billion of eachother) except if you're a psychotic dictatorship with no taxes or similar. At least, in my experience, they are.

so to wage war, you've got to spend your allocated amount of money on cyber-armies then RP an attack on a country?
Also, can you transfer money between peoples for these said armies etc?

Erm. How often do you add the surplus money (since obviously part of the defence budget is going to upkeep) to your "banked" money for your military spending? :|

Me.

Hey, we don't use the word 'n00b' flagrantly around here...(we don't?) Hush! Anyways...in a lot of message boards, everytime a newbie posts a question a lot of old-timers make senseless posts saying 'lol n00b...' but you don't get that too much on NS...maybe because the time you spent making the effort to sign up and access the forums earns you automatic brownie points. Although, the forums are easier to access now...

Anyways, it's not a n00b question at all...it's alright if you're new, just so long as you don't do anything like 'OMFGz I n00k j000 alll1111z!'

It was a question innocent enough. A good question. You aren't a noob, just don't declare war until you have a reasonably large army and have a reason.

No need to apologize.. we all were new to Ns sometime ;)

Ok.. First of all the difference between a newbie and a n00b..

The first one is a sensible guy/girl who is genuinely interested in RPing and making friends and doing things the right way following the rules..

The second is a and angsty twerp bent on making other's lives miserable with bad RP and noxious postings (The Zoogie People posted a nice example) and intruding on other people's postings with stupid posts.

Now, your's is not a n00b question (because they dont bother asking!), yours is a newbie question, and a good one, which means you want to learn how to go about things here in NationStates.

And contrary to newbie popular belief, older nations do not automatically gang up on new nations (well, only if they act n00bish).

Feel free to ask questions, it means you are interested in the mechanics used here in NS, plenty of helpful players around.

Take your time.. look around.. read postings (good way to see how others do things), post answers in some..

The links posted are good budget calculators, as your population increases, so will your cash, and it will be an indicator about how much you could spend on military or other things like research. As your population grows then you'll have "available" certain types of tech (unwritten rule), for example: at 150 million in population you'll be able to begin building nuclear weapons..

Check things out.. RP what you like.. maybe space?.. modern tech?.. medieval?.. fantasy?.. or a combination of those?..

And check this link.. it will be a lengthy read, but it is worth it:

There you'll find all you need to know.. and for a good newbie RP check the posts by Mexica Union.
