Kanabian Elections

Kanabia
25-07-2004, 08:13
Elections are to be held in Kanabia very shortly.

The Major Parties Running are:

Green Marxist Party (GMP) -
Current Leader: Christopher Kotovesky (incumbent)
Agenda- Environmental protection, neutral military policy, Increased humanitarian aid to overseas nations, emphasis on education spending.

Popular Communist Party (PCP) -
Current Leader- Marie Lefebre
Agenda- Military strength, export of ideology, industrial expansion. Active role in world affairs.

In addition, several minor parties are running-

Liberal Democracy Party (LDP) -
Current Leader- Mark Roquefort (Direct descendant of one of Kanabia's founding fathers)
Agenda- Free enterprise, economic development, disarmament.
Support- Some.

Kanabian Nationalist Party (KNP) -
Current Leader - Anatoly Korenchkin
Agenda- Nuclear Weapons capability, strong military, acquisition of foreign colonies. A new citizenship policy- Immigrants can only become "provisional" citizens and only native born Kanabians can be full citizens.
Support- Apparently little

Kanabian Christian Democrats-
Current Leader - David McMillan
Agenda- Free enterprise, ban gay marriage and other "immoral" government policies, government support to catholic church and religious instruction in schools. A tax towards non-christian churches.
Support- Unknown. However, only 40% of the population is Catholic, with a further 20% belonging to other denominations of Christianity.

OOC: For reasons of balance, if you wish to vote for one of the minor parties, you must state so in a post rather than using the poll. They probably won't win, but they can gain seats and be in a stronger position for the next election.

Marie Lefebre, leader of the PCP has lambasted the current government policy "of sitting on their behinds and doing nothing while our comrades overseas are rounded up and imprisoned. We do nothing to help these people but throw food at them. We are sitting here and stagnating in relative isolation."

KNP supporters today staged a rally in the city of Millenbourg. The rally was mostly orderly, except when rocks were thrown at the windows of an apartment complex housing a notable Jewish academic, breaking several of them. Fortunately, noone was harmed seriously, though a window pane did fall out and cut a KNP supporter below. Party leader Anatoly Korenchkin has denied that his party has an anti-semitic slant- "The man was born and bred in Kanabia- He is one of us, and we do not condone such irresponsible actions." The academic in question declined to comment.

In other news, the LDP appears to have gained a renewed wave of support over its lackluster performance in the past, judging from turnouts at speeches and functions. However, nothing is matching the enthusiasm of Green Marxist voters. "It's simply the best way for Kanabia in all aspects to have a responsible Green government that looks after the people, and it's worked excellently for our nation in the past...why change?" commented one voter.

Lethislavania, although a Socailist-leaning state, would like to donate money to the KNP, as we have felt they are the best possible leadership for the country of Kanabia. Is this possible?

No. Our election laws prohibit private or foreign donations to any political parties or individuals running for office. The leadership of the KNP passes on its thanks, anyway.

The final week of campaigning before the citizens head off to the polls to make their decision begins...

(in other words, the election will be over this time tomorrow.)

The Aztec National League wishes to state it's support for the Green Marxist Party. The Green Marxists are very much like the leading party in our nation, the Democratic Communist Party. The chair of the DCP, Premier Quetzalcoatl, gives the GMP his personal best wishes.

What would happen if we 'let slip' of $25bn from our defense budget and it just happened to 'fall into the hands' of the liberal democratic party leadership?

We don't plan to, but we're just wondering...

That would be considered as election fraud, the leader of the LDP will be forced to resign and the party disqualified from the current election. The government would then take the $25bn and redirect the funds to the other candidate parties.

If this fraud was discovered after they won the election, constitutionally, parliament will be completely dissolved and new elections held straight away.

Santa Sagissima
28-07-2004, 09:46
Comrade Fr. Miguel Santos, a charismatic leader in the recent revolutionary overthrow of the old colonial order in Santa Sagissima, would be willing to do a speaking tour on behalf of the PCP. He'd outline the harsh conditions that existed in S.Sagissima before the revolution and that still exist for workers and peasants in other countries, and talk about the impossibility of co-existence with capitalism.

The Citizen Band - a roots style band very popular in SS would also be available to tour free of charge. The Santa Sagissiman people would pay for the airline tickets, and we expect comrades in the PCP could put us up.
Kanabia
28-07-2004, 10:00
Alright. Perhaps after the election he could speak at universities?

And as the Kanabian people are very fond of music in general, we would accept the band playing a tour. They can be put up in standard tourist hotels.

To the People of the Fair Nation of Kanabia,

My higher-up, Chancellor Alejandro de la casa Negra, has a ridiculous Socialist Rhetoric I do not want to see spread to your nation. On behalf of the Lethislavanian Good Will Party, I ask you to support the KNP in the upcoming election, to hol the ideals of your countries people higher.

Yours Truly,

Vice Chancellor Michael Drummond

To Lethislavanian Vice Chancellor:

We do not appreciate your 'electoral advice' being directed towards our citizens. The choice as to which party they should vote for is firmly in their hands and any opinions as to the government that you would rather see in power should be kept to yourself or within your personal social circles. Attempts to persuade our citizens that your personal political beliefs are best for the voters of Kanabia go against the ideals of our democracy, where each citizen makes their own rational choice. If you feel so strongly about this issue in question, we humbly suggest moving to Kanabia and becoming a voting citizen yourself, but do not presume that such meddling in our internal affairs is looked favourably upon. We reward debate and free expression of political views, yet we do not view you as in a position to push yours upon our people.

The Results:
GMP-126 Seats in Peoples Congress, 63 in Peoples Senate
PCP- 102 Seats in Peoples Congress, 51 in Peoples Senate
LDP- 42 Seats in Peoples Congress, 21 in Peoples Senate
KNP- 18 Seats in Peoples Congress, 9 in Peoples Senate
Christian Democrats- 6 Seats Peoples Congress, 3 in Peoples Senate
Independents- 6 Seats Peoples Congress, 3 in Peoples Senate

(300 Seats in Congress, 150 in Senate)

The GMP is the victor and begins its 2nd consecutive term, however, the minor parties and independents hold a strong balance of power. If the GMP and PCP cannot agree on an issue, their vote will be very powerful indeed.

(Anyone else who votes after this point will be ridiculed publicly)
