Recent experimentation on the "Kali" Hemorrhagic fever virus has led to the creation of an unusual new strain, labeled "Kali MK II" by the scientists who have made the discovery. The research was conducted by the microbiology department of the private genetic research company Habart & Singh. The Imperial government has since stepped in and taken over the development and control of the new strain. While neither the Emperor nor Habart & Singh will comment on the details of the pathogen, a private demonstration has been scheduled for later this week. All who are interested in further explanation and demonstration of the virus are invited to attend.

Imperial Military Research and Development Facility, Generia City
General Josef Tayanovich walked into the lobby of the skyscraper that housed the offices and laboratories of Generia's brightest scientific minds. Entering the lobby of this building, one sensed an instant air of sterility and silence. There were no audible sounds save the echo of the General's footsteps, and an ever present electrical hum. The many fluorescent lights fifty feet from the floor of the building gave the room an extraterrestrial brightness. The massive size of the lobby seemed unnecessary to Tayanovich as he noticed that the only piece of furniture was an average sized reception desk, occupied by a dozing security guard. The General approached the desk, and tapped on the wood, waking the man.
"I am here to meet with Dr. Habart. Can you tell me where I might find him?" asked the General.
The guard picked up a telephone on his desk.
"Name, sir?" he asked the General politely.
"General Josef Tayanovich," the large man replied.
"We have a General Tayanovich here to meet with Dr. Habart. Could you send him down?"
Almost instantly after the guard finished his sentence a short man in a lab coat scurryed out from an elevator directly behind the reception desk.
"Mr. Tayanovich, I am so sorry I'm late. Please, come this way. I've been expecting you," the man said impatiently.
The scientist led Tayanovich into the elevator he had just stepped out of.
"I am Dr. Quentin Habart," the man said extending his hand.
"A pleasure. Josef Tayanovich."
The elevator began to move, however the General sensed downward motion surprisingly enough.
"Where exactly are we going, Doctor?"
"To the germ warfare laboratories. This building, as well as being over 100 stories tall, also ahs extensive subterranian laboratories."
The elevator descended for what seemed an eternity to the General. Finally the traditional "ping" sounded, and the doors opened to reveal another perfectly sterile room. Contrary to the desolation of the lobby, this area buzzed with activity. Men in white coats scurryed back and forth between the many rooms and staircases. Amid the hubbub, Tayanovich followed Dr. Habart towards one of the several staircases. They moved downwards towards a solid metal door, protected by a stern faced soldier. The soldier saluted at the sight of the officer. Habart swiped a card he wore on a chain around his neck, and the door slid open with a groan. The two men walked through, and the door sealed behin them.
"I think you will be very pleased with our results, Mr. Tayanovich," said Habart, a touch of dark joy in his voice.
The scientist opened a second metal door, revealing several large, solid glass cases. Inside there were several hunched figures. Moving closer, Tayanovich realised that they were humans, and moved back startled.
"Its all right, General. We are not masochists here. These men are scientists who were accidentally exposed. There was no foul play involved, and now even in the last stages of their lives, they can aid the science that they loved so much."
The General cautiously followed Habart and stood against the glass walls of the cells.
"As we have found, due to the tampering with the original Ebola strain, "Kali" is very susceptible to mutation. In our experiments on lab chimpanzees, we discovered a certain strain that maintains much of the traits of the original Ebola virus, yet amplifies the time that a contaminated subject can remain infected, and yet asymptomatic. In certain cases of Ebola infection, a subject does not begin to display symptoms for between four to six days. This strain of the Kali virus has the same effect, but each infected subject has a 100% chance of remaining asymptomatic for at least this long. The virus loses some of its lethality, giving it about an 85% mortality rate, but with the extended incubation, this becomes a positive trait by allowing reservoirs for the virus to develop in infected persons. In the 15% of subjects who survive the infection, 10% display immunity resulting in complete destruction of all viral units, while the other 5% have a slower immunological response, allowing the virus to continue to develop without doing any real harm to the infected person's systems. I am sure you see the possibility for this as clearly as I do, General. The asymptomatic nature of the virus in the first 6 to 8 days would allow spreading before anyone even knew they were infected. When symptoms begin to appear, it will be too late to quarantine these people, because they would have already infected everyone they had come into contact with. The KM2 strain retains the ability to spread in an airborne fashion, keeping the highly contagious nature intact. The reduced lethality also increases burnout time, meaning that an infection could be sustained for an indefinate period of time, with new infections occuring constantly by way of the "reservoir" specimens."
Dr. Habart finished his explanation, and turned to General Tayanovich.
"What do you think, General?"
Tayanovich remained silent, his eyes transfixed on one of the men in the glass cage. The man had begun to writhe in pain as blood flowed from his eyes and ears. A muffled scream could be heard from the tortured figure. Tayanovich quickly turned away from the horrifying sight.
"How soon can this virus be ready for military use?"
"It already is, General."
"Fine. Make it happen," replied the General. Tayanovich followed Habart out of the testing room, happy to be away from the sight of death.

The elegant theater-like room seemed horribly out of place in a building that was supposedly where a next generation bio weapon had been developed. Despite the displacement, the interested customers who had come for the demonstration were comfortable while they waited for the presentation to begin. The one thing about the room that caught the attention of the eye, were several large curtains hanging on the wall behind the presentation area. After fifteen minutes of anxious waiting, a short, unimpressive man in a white laboratory coat entered, and proceeded towards the front of the room. The man took some notecards from his pocket, looked at them, and put them back. He then addressed the assembly.
“Greetings, prospective buyers. My name is Dr. Habart, the lead researcher on the “KM2” project. Up until now we have been rather candid with details on the virus, and so I am sure you are curious to know what, exactly, it does. KM2, or Kali Mk II, is a modified version of Kali, which in turn was a modified version of the Ebola pathogen. The major advancement made in the development of Kali was the ability for air transmission, and an increased mortality rate. Once a victim was infected with Kali, they had an average of 12 days to live. Subjects infected with the original would become symptomatic very soon after infection. Because of Kali’s engineered nature, however, we found that it mutates very quickly. Upon testing on lab chimpanzees, we discovered a certain strain that maintains an amplified characteristic of the original Z-Ebola virus. Certain Ebola victims could remain infected but asymptomatic for several days. This new Kali strain took that to another level. 100% of victims infected with the new strain would remain asymptomatic for six to eight days. Upon isolating and examining the strain, we found that it displays a decreased mortality rate of about 85%, however they also found something that was quite fascinating. In the 15% of KM2 infected who survived, 10% displayed a strong immunological response that destroyed all viral units. The other 5% became what we like to call ‘reservoirs’ for the virus, meaning that, although they were largely unharmed, the virus still developed and harbored inside of their bodies. Upon witnessing these traits, we realized what we had.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have created a ‘stealth’ virus. The virus can remain largely undetectable for at least six days, allowing it to spread in secret. By the time the first victims become symptomatic, the outbreak will already have spread to millions of people. A quarantine would be extremely difficult, because the authorities would have no idea who had the virus and who did not. The only way to be sure would be through blood tests, and while those were being performed, KM2 would be continuously spreading even further, via the ‘reservoirs’. The devastation caused by an outbreak of KM2 would be catastrophic. Consider all of the traveling an infected person would do in six days. If the virus made its way into an airport, it could spread to every corner of the world. I believe you see the military benefits of having KM2. I suppose you would like to see the effects of the virus yourself.”
Habart, walked towards the first curtain on the wall.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the next generation in germ warfare!”
He pulled the curtain aside revealing a normal looking man, staring out into the crowd without seeing them.
“This is a two way mirror. We can see him, but he can’t see us. This man is infected with the KM2 virus. As you can see, he looks perfectly healthy. He has had the virus for approximately four days, yet displays no symptoms.”
Habart walked over to the next curtain, and pulled it aside. Inside there was another man. He looked considerably paler, and was beating his head against the window in frustration.
“This man is in the early stages, and experiencing the first symptoms of appetite loss, headache, fever, and muscle pain. Right now he probably thinks he has the flu.”
Habart approached the third curtain, and ripped it down, like the conductor of some dark symphony. His voice was audibly more excited. The man inside was huddled upon the floor. The audience could not hear his tormented groans, as the glass was soundproof.
“This man, ladies and gentlemen, is seven days into the infection, and is beginning to realize something is not right. Right now he is experiencing vomiting and nausea, diarrhea, conjunctivitis, and bizarre skin irritations.”
Habart moved to the fourth curtain, practically laughing with delight. He looked to the audience.
“This may be a little…intense.”
He ripped the curtain aside, revealing a ravaged soul scraping his bleeding nails against the glass, and trying to vocalize a scream from his bleeding throat. Blood poured from his ears, nose, and eyes. The creature sank to his knees, bloody tears flowing from his eyes.
“Hemorrhaging, shock, and kidney failure. The final stage of the disease.”
The man tried to stand. A shudder went through his body, and he collapsed in a bloody heap, dead.
“And that is KM2. As you can see it is a very unpleasant way to die. Now I believe some of you were interested in purchasing your own samples of the virus. The going price is twenty million American dollars for one gallon. Do we have any takers?”

Small trucks carrying the barrels drove out onto the tarmac. The engineers unloaded the samples, and moved them up into the cargo hold, securing the barrels. The team ran back out onto the tarmac, and gave the all clear for the aircraft to depart.
