Stand-off in Xinjiang

Hudecia
21-07-2004, 14:11
The Hudecian Abram sat directly in the middle of the road. Surrounded by Hudecian troops, the tank sat silently as the sun slowly rose in the sky.

Down the street, a Sinoese tank, similarly surrounded by troops, was waiting and watching.

For two days the standoff had been going on in one fashion or another. The Hudecians had blocked the road in response to alleged Sinoese ethnic cleansing in the area. The Sinoese refused to allow these upstarts to show them up and had been waiting for the Hudecians to back down.

The capital city of Urumqi was almost completely surrounded now by Sinoese armoured divisions. However, no firing had broken out as of yet. After all, the Sinoese and the Hudecians were on the same side.... weren't they?

Sino begins nuclear testing in Xinjiang.
Sino
22-07-2004, 06:30
The reasons why Sino conducts the forementioned tests is simple:

- Lop Nor is a perfect testing ground for nuclear weapons
- Sino has yet to test her arsenal despite being a nuclear state
- Stamping the authority of the Chinese by stating that Xinjiang is an inseparable part of China.

The People's Republic of Spyr hopes that all parties with presence in Xinjiang can arrive at a solution which preserves peace and the lives of the people living there.

We also suggest that, pending resolution of this affair, nations refrain from nuclear testing in the area.... after all, even if this region is inseprably part of China, the legitimate government of China is in question, as not only Sino but Xiaguo have claimed the right to administer such a reunified nation, and the Guomindang, despite territorial setbacks, may likewise claim to still rule over China, not to mention rulers of the various Chinese states who may make such claims themselves.

22-07-2004, 20:06
Hudecian concerns in Xinjiang are limited to protecting the lives of innocent civilians.

We desire no territorial claim. Never asked, never wanted one.

Should Sino make firm guarantees that it will cease all controversial actions in Xinjiang and allow a semi-autonomous government there. Hudecian troops will withdraw promptly.

Until such actions are met, Sinoese troops will be forced to prove that their intentions are not malign before they can enter cities such as Urumqi.

And the consequences:

hate of hte Chinese as imperialists in the tradition of the Japanese oppressors from World War II
a ruin of international reputation
relocation from desolated areas

True, Lop Nor is a DESERT, but then again, Bikini Atoll was simply a small island in the Pacific. Both were (i use were since you'd prob evacuate the civilians) inhabited.

We do not require that Xinjiang be given full independence, but we do require that human rights abuses, slave labor camps, and oppression be banned. Likewise, we call for a true semi-autonomous government.

Islandia has troops of the First and Sixth Ghost Brigades in Chengdu, as well as one or two digitzed units from the war against the Turkish empre (forgot his name).

An announcement from the Politburo has stated that if Sino is to carry out nuclear tests, Islandia would immediately freeze Sinoese assets and immediately jack up composite material prices (particularly that of spidersteel).

Lop Nor had been a testing site away from any civilians past and present! All our tests are conducted underground and out stance will not change! No humans, civilian or military will be used as guinea pigs in the tests.

Lop Nor is not near a site of ground water. With the repairs of infrastructure, in a few years there will be water piped to the desert. The Lop Nor tests in the '60s had little ill effect other than being atmospheric.

To: Spyran Government
From: Hudecian Asian Military Command

It is of great concern that the movement of any more troops into the Xinjiang province without Sinoese co-operation would result in an 'arms race' of sorts. A race which Hudecia can not hope to win.

However, it will be greatly appreciated if the troops remain on standby, should any fighting erupt.

To: Skibereen Government
From: Hudecian Foreign Ministry

The aid of the Skibereen government is highly appreciated. Humanitarian supplies are greatly needed in Urumqi, where the Sinoese blockade is beginning to have an effect on the levels of supplies.

We stress that any buildup of forces may be premature. We hope that the issue can be resolved peacefully, but we stand ready to defend ourselves in case of attack. Should Sinoese forces deliberately assault Hudecian forces or civilians, any military support would be greatly appreciated.

********************************************

"Welcome to Urumqi!" General Zhao was on hand to meet with the E. Islandian forces that had just arrived. "For now, we would appreciate it if your troops would remain. However, we trust that the Sinoese government, having seen the level of international support for our cause, will back down."

-Hudecian ASIACOM- Tokyo-

General Mallard received the morning briefing from his subordinates before returning to the strategic map of Asia.

10 000 Hudecian MPs were based in and around Karamay. In addition to this, around 30 000 former FSTX fighters were locally guarding their leader "Tamerlane".

6 Hudecian divisions were trapped in Urumqi, totaling over 30 000 heavily armed troops. Including 2 armoured divisions.

In Kashi, 15 000 Hudecian troops from 3 divisions were standing guard over the local airstrip.

Sino could easily overwhelm any of these forces. It was estimated that they had over 1 million troops throughout Xinjiang. But Mallard believed that a strong show of defiance would deter any thoughts of military action.

Skiberdeen, Bonstock, E. Islandia, Spyr, Xiaguo.... some old allies and some new ones. Bonstock may be trying to provoke Sino by attempting to fly in supplies.... Bonstock can not be allowed to be attacked by Sino.

Soon, a flight of 5 Hudecian Arrow IIs would join up with the Bonstockian air forces heading to Xinjiang. Should Sino attack, and should one of the Hudecian fighters be destroyed.... it would be war. However, the presence of Hudecian fighters may deter the Sinoese from firing on the flight at all.... at least, that was the hope.

'Tamerlane' sat silently in his temporary home in Karamay. To his left and right there was always two Hudecian and two FSTX special forces.

His hatred for the Sinoese occupation forces barely subsided from the war, he was frustrated that the most he could do was sit and watch from the sidelines. But perhaps not for too much longer, for despite having the Hudecians prepetually guarding him, he was not a weak nor a vulnerable man. And he could still cause the Sinoese much grief.

But the Hudecians are not strong enough to face off with the Sinoese. They may have nerves of steel to face down such a superior opponent but their men would have to be made of steel if they hoped to win.

Still, if the Sinoese would happen to attack the Hudecian forces... or if the Hudecians thought the Sinoese attacked them.... that would open up a chance for 'Tamerlane' to regain much of his lost power.

General Demark had been following the continuous stand-off in Xinjiang with interest. This morning, he had been dining in the main hall when the daily intel report come in. After dismissing the guards from the door, he settled down to read. Over the past month, an increased international presence had surfaced in the desert. A multitude of nations, most of which he had never encountered began sending reinforcements to Hudecia. It was something Demark had mixed feelings about.

On one hand, they had prevented further rash acts by the Sinoese, which he noted, was being washed down with a storm of propaganda. However, he had his doubts if increased action would improve the situation in the long term. Not that his forces could be of much assistance right now. Granzian troops were stretched thin over the vast expanse of Kazakhstan, and peace talks with the Bedou had yet to occur. Only then could the Granzian leave from the south.

Finishing his danish, the General rose and proceeded to the Comm Center. "Put out a transmission to the Hudecians, ask them if we could be of assistance in any way possible," he called to the operator on duty. He then turned to an aide. "Alert his majesty, the Sultan, that negotiations are open for his homeland, and that we would prefer them to begin as soon as possible. Tell him to proceed to Conference Hall when his excellence is ready. Understood?"

"So far, we have the support of the international community and the major neighbours, including Bedou and Granzi. However, our own position among ethnic Chinese and Uighurs is being undermined by a determined PR campaign by the Sinoese."

"They have been actively recruiting people from these groups to help give their military here a much needed face-lift. As for us, we have support from a large segment of the Uighur population because of our support of the FSTX earlier on. However, I'm sure that the majority of the ethnic Chinese population would be happy to see us go."

Once the two were in a secured location in the Hudecian HQ, he began to discuss the military situation.

"Militarily, I don't need to tell you that we don't stand a chance in hell if the Sinoese try to storm us. We just don't have enough forces to be able to hold them off. But we are reluctant to add more forces because we don't want to spook the Sinoese into taking some pre-emptive action."

"Tomorrow, at noon, General Yang will be arriving to take control of the negotiations from the Hudecian end. However, we would appreciate it if the Islandian forces would send a representative to help us."

My sincerest apologies.
To the order of the day. Bedou ideas are simple.
We the Bedou provide military protection to Tajikistan and Kyrgystan, we are willing to suppliment Granzi military in Kazakstan.
We require Right to use over the lands of Tajikistan and Kyrgystan, this would be similar to the rights most mid-easter states afford the bedouins of various regions.
We will add the Tajiks an the Kyrgs in assembling their new governments and any required we will supply them, no burden of reconstruction will fall on the international community.
The Daylami while we understand they cannot be allowed any control of the area will be afforded santuary and the right to remain Daylamis with assemilation into any nation, however they will be governed bythe laws of the land.
The Granzi, the Hudecia and ...even the Sino, be they willing, will be allowed to observers on Bedou military instillations in the region.
As well the Hudecia and the Granzi will be allowed to operate one military reservation in Tajikistan and in Kyrgystan for the purpose of security matters in the region.
These bases will be allowed to operate on the order of twenty year contracts.
Once the Bedou have moved enough forces into the area to secure the borders of Tajikistan and Kyrgystan the ever growing international coalition that has answered the Bedou call to arms will be asked to stand down.
On that matter, a majority of these nation have deep ties with Bedou and I am sure would enjoy using the Bedou presence to open relations and even diplomatic relations with all parties concerned..again including the Sino should that be of interest to them.
With the Bedou presence, we will also offer the Wadi-Rum schools to any nation who wishes it so that re-education of muslims with in nation may begin so that the Jihadian element might be removed and the global terrorist threat reduced.
Early talks of the Bedou being allowed parts of southern Kazakstan were discussed. We withdraw this desire but rather request the same "Right to Use" laws that way the nomadic peoples of the region will again be free to move about under the Bedou umbrella, that "Right to Use" will also include an obligation to defend.
Finally, with your permission I will be send a copy of these terms to the Hudecians, and the Sino with a request to meet with them. This location seems safe, or we could move closer to Sino proper for their comfort.
Also a copy of these terms will be sent to each nation nvolved in the Defense of the Hudecian and Bedou positions so thatthey see a resolution has been reached.
We understand that the Hudecian may some terms they might wish to add and that you as well might have terms.
Those things being said, shall I prepare some coffee?"

Message Follows

Northwesterian Intelligence has picked up startling information regarding a standoff in Xinjiang. Like everyone involved, I would like nothing better than a peaceful resolution. However, Granzi being an esteemed member of the Organization of Maritime Powers, and, I hope, a good ally, Pacific Northwesteria is willing to offer humanitarian and/or military aid in the region. We are in the process of revamping and increasing our military, and this would be the perfect place to test out our new forces. Although the area in question is out of the range of nearly all naval forces, PN is willing to send a small, elite land force as well as a large compliment of aircraft from our carriers to assist in the defense of Granzian and/or Hudecian positions. Also, long-range bombers can take off from OMP bases within range (secret OOC: they're done, right?) and then base themselves in-country. These bombers can also be used, at near-stall speeds, to drop supplies by parachute. Please respond with your requested response to this crisis. Again, may it be resolved without bloodshed. We hope that a balancing of the forces in the area will result in a back off by the Sinoese, as they will no longer be assured swift victory. However, if you believe that our presence would be harmful, and incite war, you may have us stay in the area, on alert. May the great nations of Granzi and Pacific Northwesteria live long in freedom.

A desolate alley in Urumqi.

The G-Man looked around suspiciously as he set the charges on the civilian building. Getting in the city had been easy. Nobody minded him. He stood up as he finished setting the charges and the timer on the C-4. He left the area quickly making sure too drop a note that said (in Sinoese) "We order Hudecia and its allies too remove themselves from Xinjiang... or more attacks will follow. Signed: Anonymous." A minute after he left the box of C4 detonated.

The bomb's explosion rattled the usually quiet neighbourhood. Many nearby windows were shattered and smoke billowed from the alleyway. Casualties were not initially clear but several people were taken to hospital with wounds ranging from burns to lacerations.

Hudecian troops nearby were called in to help transport the wounded to the major hospital and to seal off the area until a formal investigation is concluded. Hudecian investigators, because of the note found near the explosion site, suspect that it is a terrorist group supporting Sino.

However, locals reporting seeing a strange man in the vicinity. Hudecian MPs have posted a sketch of him and are seeking him in connection with the bombing.

The brewing coffee was a blend Demark had never smelt before, nevermind taste. He waited with bated breath to sample such a beverage, a respectable distance away from the coffee maker. "With regards to the civil administration, that is an unusual request, but one which with the Commonwealth has no objections. We agree to all the points of such an agreement, with only a limited change."

The General looked the Sultan in his eyes, "We will be more than honored to grant the Bedou rights to all of Kazakhstan, similar to those in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. We had mentioned only the south due to the fact that region was the only portion to have been discussed beforehand. Limited self-autonomy will be granted to the Bedou in the entirety of Kazakhstan, with a fully functional government and links to their brothers in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Civil administration of the non-Bedou people of Kazakhstan will be done by elected officials under the stewardship of the Granzi.”

“Of course, when a settlement has been reached, the Bedou are more than welcome to a diplomatic exchange, in hopes of fostering further and stronger relations.”

Just then, his headset began beeping. Apologizing to the Sultan, he stepped outside. “What is it?” Demark spoke into the mouthpiece. “Sir, we’ve received a transmission from the Pacific Northwesterians. An offer for specialized help, among other things.” Demark thought for a moment before replying. “PN has been a very faithful ally since the beginning of our membership in the OMP. Give them clearance, but emphasize that the force be small. We don’t want any acceleration of this standoff. Delta Air Base, near Taldyqorghhan, will be made available. Got that?”

“Yes, General.”

Stepping back into the conference hall, Demark waited fro the Sultan’s reply.

Line General Xu grinned.

"Well, my friends from the Supply Department managed to supply me with these," she said, waving her hand at the HMMVWs parked outside.

An aide brought a small set of blueprints.

"Ten thousand pounders for ground use," Xu announced. "Hardened shell; impervious to almost everything except for the toughest bombs and the detonation signal. Fuse is standard aluminum powder and magnesium, and body is watergel slurry.

"And these are the newest EMPs," Xu said, pointing at another set of blueprints. "They are programmed for small radiuses, but are powerful; drop one of these into an enemy camp, and it will knock out electronic systems for at least half a minute, even with EMP-resistant systems.

"The First Storm Division has two brigades flying in right now; we will be joined by the mechanized units of the First and Sixth Ghost Brigades, and probably their commando elements as well," Xu finished

"As for an ambassador..."

A smaller, slimmer woman stepped out from the shadows, a cascade of brown hair tumbling out of her desert helmet.

"This is Aisha Abiad, of the Diplomatic Service's Middle Eastern Council. She will be representing us in the negotiations-as soon as she gets on some work clothes and gets updated on the situation."

Aisha bowed, and quickly headed off into a room to change. When she returned, she wore white spidersilk robes and a slight hint of makeup.

Of course, Aisha realized that there could possibly be a backlash against her (and Islandia as well, since women held much of hte power there) but she was the best Arabic linguist and an excellent diplomat.

General Zhao was speechless for a second as he saw Aisha. Shaking his head quickly he refocused on the task at hand.

"Well, we are still waiting for an official response from the Sinoese concerning the peace conference but all indications are that it will proceed eventually. For now we as allies should consolidate our positions both diplomatically and militarily."

"The Xiannese have decided to remain neutral in this confrontation, and in doing so have blocked our primary method of transport into the country. The Bedou have been increasingly helpful towards us and have offered our troops safe passage through their territory to reach Xinjiang. However, I suspect that support from Western Asia will be needed in order to transport the troops here."

"Domestically, things have been going downhill. It appears that a bit of a tit for tat campaign is brewing between the ethnic Han and Uighur population despite efforts by both sides to calm things down."

"This morning there was an explosion in an ethnic Uighur neighbourhood. Locals were quick to blame the Hans and retaliated by attacking a Han vendor. Hudecian troops had to get involved to break up the fighting."

The LRRAF can ship out many tons of humanitarian aid via large-capacity transports for the inhabitants of Xinjiang. A medical force can also be deployed within a short timeframe.

We are always eager to further global human rights, but getting involved in a war with such a powerful country as Sino does not seem to be the way to do it, so no combat personnel will be sent in.

We are wondering if such a flight would have to cross Sino airspace, and, if so, if the Sino air-defense net would allow the transports safe passage.

The missile slowly weaved its path closer and closer towards the moving Humvee. A million thoughts raced through his head, God, his wife, his daughter, the driver. The last thing he would ever hear would be that scream "For Sino!".

From the airport, the sound of the blast was clearly heard by the welcoming committee. Within a minute the truth would be known.

Lt. Gen. Han was in utmost rage, we are nearing war! War was not a general like him wanted. Someone had been framing us. No Sinoese soldier would have done the bombing. He was about to leave for the peace table when this happened. The power of the news broadcast held him back.

"Holy F*ck!" He cursed to himself, loud enough to echo throughout his HQ.

ARSAC (Armed Republic of Sino Aerospace Corps) has picked up the image of a mysterious black aircraft, landing in the desert, undoubtedly stealth. The type is yet to be identifiable, but someone, somebody's sleepers must be onboard... Sleepers for starting up a war! A war between Sino and Hudecia. He watched the many hours of highly magnified spysat images, a black eagle-like thing flew here, a real bird of doom.

==========================================================

"Soldiers and officers, compatriot civilians. It is a sad and tragic news that now Gen. Zhao of Hudecia has been assasinated, and there has been a terrorist bombing in Xinjiang, related to us. Framed like a picture, we have our faces in it!" Han tried to perform some of Liu's Hitler effects, yet to grasp the power of the master.

"We must now defend ourselves, against a possible onslaught of misunderstood Hudecians, from all sides! I make this clear that we will NOT deliberately attack them!!! Rather, it is our duty to stand up for the truth that we are not waging war on the Hudecians."

==========================================================

Lt. Gen. Hu's fired up temper was quickly put into use, he soon filed a report to the Hudecians, it was detailed in the explanation.

One key aspect of the note left near the bomb site, was that it was traditional Chinese and it was poorly written in terms of grammar and some of the characters were barely legibal, uncharacteristic of any Chinese person. He viewed the footage of the collapsing building, it looked unlike a civilian terrorist, it was far too professional and how could civvies have access to a bomb of that power as it was not done suicidally by vehicle, the way it collapsed and fell. He wondered, it must be foreign or Uighur troublemakers. The question now is who...

*Above Urumqi*

General Yang cussed so loudly on the plane to Urumqi that several of the soldiers on board prepared to restrain him in case he took out his anger on the furniture.

"What the HELL is going on down there! We can't even keep our Generals safe?! Who is in command now?"

"That'd be Lt. Colonel DeFonc." His attache replied.

"Who the HELL is doing this? If the Sinoese wanted us dead we'd all be dead by now. It must be a group that is supporting them or something.... war is not in either of our interests.... "

*Karamay*

"Tamerlane" had managed to lose his Hudecian 'handlers' for a couple minutes while he planned his next stage of actions. With the Hudecians at the highest alert possible, all they needed was a little push to send them flying over the abyss into total war.

A war which would cause the deaths of thousands. But it was a small price to pay. "Tamerlane" harboured no illusions of the Hudecians winning the war, the Sinoese would obviously win it. So now he would throw his lot in with the Sinoese, who would now have to cater to his strong FSTX forces in order to maintain calm.

In major cities like Karamay and Kashi, FSTX forces were already policing streets and taking over civil duties, ostensibly to 'maintain the peace'. Some were even co-operating with local Sinoese forces.

In Urumqi, unbeknownst to the Hudecians or Sinoese, FSTX forces had captured 3 of the 4 Hans responsible for the attack. All three of them made taped confessions that they had been hired by a Hudecian officer. When the time was right these tapes would be released to the public. Damning evidence that the Hudecians were responsible for the assasination.

Also, in the terrorist bombing attack in Urumqi, 'evidence' would show that the C4 was obtained from Hudecian military stockpiles. It was of course, but it had been given to the FSTX. If Hudecia ever suspected that Tamerlane had betrayed them however, they wouldn't be able to go public that they had armed a terrorist group.

Armored and commando elements of the First and Sixth Ghost Brigades have also arrived, and have begun patrols also within Urumqi.

Following the sad death of General Zhao, Line General Xu ordered her troops into action. Immediately, a curfew was imposed on various Islandian occupied zones, and posters put out for the apprehension of an enemy saboteur, who was probably Caucasian, dressed in black, and armed to the teeth. All with information were encouraged to call Hudecian or Islandian forces-with the promise of a large reward.

After they finished, the leader clicked his intercom once.

Two clicks were returned, and the leader nodded to one of his men.

The door blew open, and the men quickly rushed inside, one team heading upstairs while the others ran through the rooms, slamming down the occupants, kicking weapons away, and shooting any and all who resisted.

"Soldier, let's just call him 'Bob' for now. We have a good degree of speculation that he came in via that mysterious aircraft spotted by our ASSI (Advanced Spy Satellite Imaging) system."

"No sh*t, Sherlock. Tell the ladies at Comm. to pass this report to the Hudecians, we've all seen it and now its their turn." Gao handed the sergeant the report before retiring to his quaters.

Admiral Michaels heard about the terrorist attacks that seriously damaged the chance for peace. All the more reason to have an eye in the sky, he thought. Admiral Michaels ordered that the DD-1Bs, currently over the area, activate and begin sending images, in visible, IR, etc., both to his command, and the HQs of the allies in the region. Next time someone tried some kind of explosive attack, the infrared would spike on the screens, and the perpetrator would be tracked. This would not happen again. It must not, for the sake of peace.

Sino's control of China ranges from the coastal provinces of Jiang Su to Guang Dong. It's also holding Qinghai, Tibet and Xinjiang. Exceptions in Xinjiang are just Urumuqi , Karamay and Kashi.

Granzian soldiers manning the border crossings have announced a temporary lockdown. Nothing will be allowed to cross the Xinjiang-Kazakhstan border without further notice. This of course does not apply to allied troops with proper identification and signed orders (to prevent the perpatrators from doning the uniforms of allied forces). The border stations will be increasingly fortified over the next few months, with roadblocks and bulletproof buildings.

To the civilian population, we apologize for the inconvience. This meesage was placed on posters and broadcasted over the local TV and radio stations, warning the population to not approach the border. We expect to lift this ban in a few weeks at the very most.

The incident in Urumqi places us even closer to the completely unpleasent prospect of tearing each other apart.
As a man who has spent much time in the arena of politics and war, I have serious doubts as to the Sino being resposible for this tragedy.
If you wanted to risk all out war, you would have at least over whelmed the Hudecians totally. Not bomb a building.
I believe it would be in the best interests of our two parties to come together to talk. For the Sino to come to the table with Hudecians, and with Granzi.
We are being played for fools, and you are being made a patsey.
I will personally be arriving in in six hours on the Kygystan border with Xianjiang province. I will bring a reasonable compliment of guards.

OOC: Are the negotiations agreed upon and over? If it is, this will be placed into effect immediately.

They wear khaki short-sleeved fatigues that look like they are 8th army surplus, and carry standard web gear, along with kevlar vests.

Colonel DeFonc was the youngest Colonel in the entire Hudecian Army. At the green age of 24 he was a political choice because he came from Hudecia's underepresented ethnic French population.

"All Hudecian areas are 100% locked down. Martial law is not in effect yet, however, upon consultations with my officer corps we may yet decide that it is necessary," He reported to Line General Xu.

Hudecian military command was always consultory in a crisis. In fact, lacking strong leadership, solutions to problems were found through group discussions. A fatal flaw in Hudecian military, but one that the Hudecians tended to hide by having strong authoritarian leaders, like Gen. Zhao. In his absence, decisions would be slow and deliberate.

The Hudecian guards trained their guns on the approaching Sinoese vehicle. The 1st Sargeant attending the checkpoint wiped sweat from his forehead before he slowly approached the vehicle.

As the Russian G-man ran from the E. Islandian forces, the FSTX decided to make its appearance.

Dressed in stolen Hudecian uniforms and using Hudecian weapons, they opened fire on the E. Islandian troops chasing the G-man and on the G-man himself. They had been hiding in neighbouring buildings expecting a raid to come soon. Taking advantage of the natural cover they rained deadly fire down indescriminately into the crowded street.

*Karamay*

Tamerlane closed his cellphone. He swore lightly, things were not turning out as he had hoped. But still, this latest incident would devastate confidence in the Hudecians. Tomorrow, he would come out in support of the Sinoese and urge a full fledged war on the Hudecians.

Naturally, his troops would still use the Hudecian weapons that they had been provided. No sense in letting good guns go to waste. And it would be ironic especially for the Hudecians... hoisted on their own petard. He smiled thinly as the two Hudecian SOFs returned from their patrol to 'guard' him.

The Islandians shouted in surprise as more soldiers, Hudecians this time, flooded into the corridor- and opened fire on them. The commandos dived behind whatever cover they could find, bunking down behind Humvees and in doorways, they returned fire, and called in a reaction team, which was nearby in case things got out of hand.

Lieutenant Chiu, in command of the situation, quickly ordered his men into HMMVWs and IFVs. His force had sustained heavy casualties for now, and they would need to break out of the alleyway; to stay would be to condemn themselves to death.

The men quickly loaded onto the vehicles as their comrades provided covering fire. Once inside, gunners took their places on machine gun turrets and quickly responded, roaring out of the alleyway as fast as they could.

Overhead, a pair of A129 helos opened fire on the insurgents below with rockets and heavy machine guns.

Inside an IFV, Chiu growled, and bit his lip as one of his men tended to his wound.

"Did you see that?" he asked his subordinate. "Hudecians attacking us."

"And friendly fire doesnt quite seem so friendly anymore," his subordinate replied, agreeing as he bound a piece of gauze around his leader's shoulder and injected a small amount of painkiller.

"Why would they attack us like that?" another soldier, a woman corporal, asked from her position in the hold.

"Dont know," Chiu replied, grim. "Tend to the wounded first. Stop the bleeding, and give them painkillers if they want them. Keep them cool and hydrated. We will settle this when we get back."

1. Bedou have a right to use the land in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
2. Bedou do not have civil administration (aka control) over those countries as a whole, but do in matters that deal with the Bedou.
3. Bedou have the rights as those described above on Kazakhstan.
4. Bedou have a right to defend the above mentioned nations.

6. Both Granzi and Hudecia are entitled to one military base in both Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in terms of 20-year contracts.
7. Bedou have rights to open re-educational schools in the form of Wadi-Rum schools.

Also the Bedou would very much enjoy the responsability of hosting the Sino and Hudecian leaders in a face to face conference, to find a swift bloodless resolution to their situation.
It is also currently my opinion that the recent troubles in Uruqi are of the SIno's doing, but rather a terrorist group.

Du shook his head. "We should not jump to conclusions," he said. "Much as she is a good officer, she acts too rashly. Have you captured anything from the soldiers who fired on you?"

Chiu produced a bloodstained assault rifle, an M-16.

Du narrowed his eyes. "I havent seen many of those around here," he said to his subordinate. "What does Senior Lieutenant Kaminsky say?"

Senior Lt. Kaminsky had secured the site after Chiu was forced to retreat.

General Demark stepped into Operational Command. Rows of blcinking computer consoles greeted him, where Intel Operative sat, sifting through the data that streamed in every second of every day. Major Greene was waiting off to one side. "Good day, General. Continuing from our conversation, the East Islandians had almost finished a raid in Urumqi. According to our intel, a foreigner of Caucasian descent was the target, and fled from the pursuing troops." He presses a control, and the IR footage showing gunshots plays. "This was sent to us by PN."

Greene turns and points to several stillshot of the video, arranged on a nearby table. "Now this is where it gets interesting. As you can see here, and here," selecting a few photos, gunmen, presumably insurgents, open fire from concealed positions across the path of the pursuit. They are wearing Hudecian uniforms, and appear to be wielding standard issue arms. On closer inspection," the image enlarges, "we see that the faces of these soldiers are decidely non-Hudecian, and most likely a native Arab. As far as our intel knows, the Hudecians have not begun a local recuiting process, so we can only guess how they have gotten hold of this equipment."

Demark had been silent during this exchange, and only now spoke up. "At least we know the mystery assasin is still in Xinjiang. Double the watch at the Kazakhstan border, and get some UAVs up in the air at all time doing patrols. We can't let him escape. Relay all this information to the Hudecian commander, along with our observations. Mark it TOP PRIORITY." Greene remarked, "The acting commander is one Colonel DeFonc. Since General Zhao most likely didn't recieve that transmission before he died, I would suggest resending it."

"Good idea, Major," rumbled Demark. The Comm. Officer stepped up at that moment. "Excuse me sir, but a transmission just arrived from LRR forces. They are requesting landing permission."

"Well, give it to them." The General picked up the speaker. "Attention LRR commander! This is General Demark, Theater Commander of Granzian forces in China and Central Asia. "Ok, we're clear to land at Yining."

The formation of lumbering, unescorted transports heads for Yining. About an hour later, the Il-79s touch down on the tarmac, using barely half of the strip. Their big landing gear absorbs the shock of landing as each one sets its bulk on the ground. The transports taxi off the tarmac and begin unloading vehicles. The TGB-20AL ambulences first come off, then XA-185s, and then a small number of MBT-6s, as well as various SAM carriers. The Mi-35s are also unloaded. Crews can be seen unfolding rotors and attaching stub wings.

Lieutenant-General Gordon Page drives to the base commander's office in a Pinzgauer truck, sporting a russian KPVT MG.

Page hops out, dressed in desert fatigues and wearing a Finnish-style helmet, and walks over to the gaurds at the door, saluting them.

"I need to talk to the base commander," he says.

The Sultan recieved the encoded image.
He gazed at in contemplation as he walked away from the secure compound.
He was not waiting for the Seglawi, he would nt get a Kilometer before it caught up to him, but it would have to catch up.
He did not enjoy, considering withdrawing support of the Hudecians, he had given no oath to them, but it was still a distasteful act.
He ralized that there was an acid test to the truth of this matter....

The Seglawi caught up to the Sultan--two Kilometers up the road.
The trip would take three hours he told the Sino six justto be on the safe side.
He ordered the mainguns of the carrier readied. and hte fighters preped to be scrambled. The 170 black clad Lawarence Marines stood in the deployment area.

It was time for the Sultan to test the Hudecian to see how they were actually dealing with this.
He pulled the Bedou9000 PCD from its pouch and began lining images and sending it to contacts.
A string of images went to the Hudecian government.

"What kind of bullshit is this?!" First General Uw roared, slamming his fist into the table. His officers jumped, except for a small, pink haired woman dressed in standard digital camo fatigues with a Kanario Guards crest on her shoulder.

"They're reporters," Lieutenant Tamao said. "That's what they do. What WE need to do is to keep this from blowing through the roof."

Uw sighed, and slumped in his seat. "I've already issued an official apology...do i need to do like hte Americans and pay them money for their deaths also?"

"It would be some measure of relief," Tamao replied. "That is better than none. And, in the meantime, I suggest you speed up the infrastructure projects and do your best to keep the press under your thumb. We can always confiscate their cameras or hack into their feeds if we need to. Worse come to worse, we can assassinate some of them as we see fit."

Tamao, for her slight appearance, was an advocate of 'do what you need to.' This did not make her popular, but Uw could see that she was right sometimes, and it appeared this was one of the times.

"Good suggestions," Uw said.

*******
Pending the ambush of the convoy, money was given to the families who had lost loved ones. Furthermore, Islandians began to undertake infrastructure projects to help the local ones, and official apologies for the incident were issued many times.

The reporters of the Global News Network, however, faced harassment from various military officials. Their equipment was secretly sabotaged, their reporters detained for hours on end, and their feeds were regularly hacked into or shut down altogether. Outwardly, however, the military made no comment on GNN, except to say that GNN had presented a biased point of view to its viewers by allowing itself to skew its news.

American based news services were similarly (and secretly) harassed, given the Islandian military's dislike for American reporters.

The G-Man was doing all sorts of acrobatic moves too throw off both the Hudecian and East Islandian aim. He was doing a surprisingly good job of it too. But he was easy too track because he left a LOT of blood on the ground indicating that he was severely wounded... maybe even crittaclly wounded. What kept him running was a mystery. The pursueing men were beginning too run out of breath when they came across the body... there was absolutely NO pulse, he had lost too much blood and was dead. He had the same neutral look on(what was left of) his face that he had when he engaged the Commandoes... not a sign of pain.

The promised support from PN began to arrive in the area. 200 elite PN special forces troopers landed at Delta Air Base. They had state-of-the-art equipment, and unequaled training. They were separated into teams of 8. Each trooper had a semi/fully automatic rifle, high-yield grenades, flashbangs, a sidearm, bulletproof body armor, and a satellite uplink system. This would allow the team to patch their HUDs (retractable during combat) into recon planes above, giving them a bird's eye view of the battlefield as well as the positions of their teammates. Each group of 8 would be given 2 tripod-mounted .50-caliber machine guns, as well as a high-powered sniper rifle. Some of this gear would of course be left behind on any given mission, as it would be too heavy to ensure quick movement and stealthy approach. These troops could also call in airstrikes from available forces, including
20 Sea Hawk gun ships (attack helos). (OOC: I'm sure I'm leaving something out, any specific questions about my forces can be answered by me).
The remainder of the PN forces committed to the conflict would remain out of sight near an OMP base until needed. The promised bomber-support would consist of:
45 B-2 Bombers
270 Su-33 fighter-bombers
50 DD-1 A high-speed, high-altitude stealth bombers

These would be protected by:
460 MiG-29 Fulcrum fighters
100 F-109D fighters

With recon and targeting information provided by a total of:
12 DD-1 B high-speed, high-altitude stealth recon planes (this includes the 3 already in place)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Officials in PN were busy at work trying to determine the identities of the "insurgents". They played the surveillance tapes from the area backwards, and noticed the insurgents exiting the building and forming a group. They then walked backwards, and towards an intersection in the road. At that point, they lost them because the reconaissance aircraft, considering it's tremendous speeds, hadn't gotten in range yet. Pictures of the men's faces were sent out, along with the findings of the intelligence experts on their possible point of departure.

DISASTER IN URUMQI

HP - In a bizarre and confusing turn of events, East Islandian special forces managed to kill a saboteur suspected to be responsible for several terrorist attacks. However, about 12 civilians and an undisclosed number of East Islandians were killed when terrorists dressed as Hudecians assaulted their group.

Defence Minister Owen has reiterated that no Hudecian troops were involved and has pointed out that the weapons used were US made M-16s, and not the H&K MP-5s that are employed by the Hudecian military in Urumqi.

Despite the Hudecian denials, credibility in the Hudecian military has sunk to all time lows with the revelation that a Hudecian officer ordered the assasination of General Zhao.

While we in Pacific Northwesteria fully understand the strains of leadership in these trying times, and are sympathetic to your obligations as political and moral leader, we fail to understand why our forces must be detained. "Is that the saboteur?" one of his troops asked.

"Is he alive?" another one queried.

Argus pulled a sedative out of his pack and stabbed it into the man. "Intelligence will be angry if he is. Take him away."

They quickly loaded him onto an IFV and left.

In the resulting confusion, Corporal Argus' IFV was separated from the rest and stuck in a deserted alleyway in Urumqi. They contacted headquarters, telling them that they had a possible live hostile, possibly the saboteur, as well as a large amount of wounded and some dead.

Two Ka-60Ms, were sent to pick them up.

The teams were in the helos and away almost before the orders had sunk in. They were packing light. Main weapons and side-arms and grenades only, for the most part. One or two .50 cals among all 6 teams. Some snipers on the rooftops. But mostly down and dirty.
Accompanying them were five gunships, miniguns at the ready, and snipers aiming out of the windows. They would go in first, create confusion, and then provide further support as necessary. This would be followed by grenades and an infantry charge. With any luck, they would be caught completely off guard. They would save one group of soldiers first, then the other. They couldn't afford to split up their forces.

The Mi-8 crews rush to their helicopters, and start up the big Mi-8s. With big red crosses painted in visible places throughout the fuselage, hopefully they wouldn't draw any fire. The pilots and co-pilots strap themselves in, and non red-crossed Mi-8s take off to evac the non-wounded troops. These carry rockets, ATGMs, and MGs, and by the looks of things will probably need them.

"What did she say? Hudecians attacking? That can't be right. Notify Hudecian command that we'll be making an evac run, in case they've got troops that need out."
"Attention Hudecian Xinjiang command, this is LRRA Xinjiang medical expedition flight A. We are making an evacuation run over Urumqui, and if you have any units that need evacuation, we can take them. Just have them radio us with a position and we'll be there ASAP, over."

The helicopters take off, medical Mi-8s, unarmed but heavily armored, combat Mi-8s armed to the teeth, and Mi-35s carrying groups of infantry to escort the helos. Hopefully things would go smoothly. With the new ECM systems, non-KE weapons will have a hard time hitting them.

Well to this reporter it seems fairly clear that whether or not the Hudecians are resposible there one less safe place to be world today, and that is Urumqi."

The Sultan ground his teeth at using the press to hurry the movements of others. He loathed the free press, even if they could be manipulated.
If the Hudecians did not order the attack, and weapons did not belong on the area, then it was not policy, or accidental.
He wished he could get troops into Urumqi, but he had his people to worry about and did not to provoke Sino. He knew he could over run them, more then likly the Bedou were the only ones who could.
He would have to if something happened, those Gaels he was allied with would certainly invade if he did make a decisive fast victory, and failing an invasion they would surely strike with what everyone was trying to avoid.

The Sultan also realised he needed to respond to the Pacific Northwesteria.
Transmit this he said from the deck of the Seglawi.
"Presided Zwimbala, most wise.

He was reluctant to send in troops, but he knew an answer needed to be found.

"The weapons being used by the imposters are Hudecia-issue and they are military grade Hudecia weaponry. However, Hudecia does supply certain groups in the region with weaponry. When we do such, we make sure to record the serial number of the guns."

DeFonc flipped the captured M-16 over to show the serial code. HI19874

"The HI denotes that the gun was not used by the Hudecian military but was given to a local group to help ensure their loyalty. In Xinjiang the list of locals who received these weaponry is short... very short. And using our computer system we could even identify the man who we gave this gun to."

"Understand that everything I am telling you is politically sensitive and highly classified. Under normal circumstances I couldn't tell you, but before Zhao died he gave you full clearance so...."

"The men who are attacking your troops are also acting exactly like a Hudecian military unit would, for the most part. That is because if my suspicions are correct, they were trained by Hudecians. Before the crisis erupted, we had trained and equipped nearly 100 000 former FSTX members in urban warfare. They were supposed to be used against the Sinoese in case they got out of hand. But now it appears that it is they who are out of our control."

*Hudecian HQ*

Staff Sargeant Wilson had been pouring over all the records of troop depositions over the last several hours, trying to find evidence to confirm that there was no way any Hudecians were there.

Frustrated, she decided to check to see what oral orders were given. Using the spy satellite that was given to the area, she began going through the piles of cell phone calls made by Hudecian troops or any allied troops.

Funny... there was a call from the "Tamerlane" safehouse exactly 15 seconds before the ambush started.

She checked the times again... yes... 15 seconds before the 'Hudecians' began attacking, one of the SOF agent's cell phones made a call to .... an FSTX captain in Urumqi... tracing the call further she found that the FSTX captain was across the street from raided house.

What other calls were made by the cell phone... one at 3am .. at 2:30am...one at 6pm the previous day... 1 pm the previous day... and he made 3 calls the day that General Zhao died.. all timed before the assasination...

Printing off a copy of the findings she dashed out of the command center and pounded on the 'safe' room door... impatiently she pounded again and again... what could DeFonc be doing in there with that Islandian???

Delta Air Base, Yining

Colonel Franks was doing paperwork at his desk in the hours before noon. After a quick meal, he decided to do a jog around the base perimeter. Though approaching fourty, Franks maintained his physique through intensive training, throughout his distinguished service in the Air Force. Returning from his run, the Colonel was suprised to find a group of men, foreign, waiting outside of his office. Noting they were LRR by their insignas, he asked, "I'm the base commander, Colonel Franks. How can I help you?"

"Pleased to meet you Colonel. I'm general Page, commander of the LRR forces here. I was just wondering where we should set up our base of operations, where it would be most convenient. I have heard that there's already a medevac mission in progress, extracting East Islandian, possibly Hudecian troops from Urmqui, actually. So, as I was saying, what area of the base here should we take up residence in? Also, we've got ground troops ready to reinforce your positions, so if you need any don't hesitate to ask. We've got XA-185 MOD personnel carriers, which can survive RPGs and mines, a few recoil-less rifle carriers, and some MBT-6 tanks too.

Urumqi
Hours ago

"Corporal Argus is down!" one of the men shouted from his position by a crudely constructed barricade of concrete blocks, logs, and tires.

Specialist Li quickly pulled Argus aside, and pulled out her first AID kit. "Send up a flare!" she shouted to one of her men.

"Is that so smart?" he wondered as he slapped the flare into the barrel of his grenade launcher and fired it straight up, sending a shower of red sparks erupting high in the sky.

Another man was hit, and grunted. One of his comrades quickly dragged him into a doorway and shook his head when he saw that the bullet had entered beneath his helmet.

A rocket slammed into the ground near them, and they cringed. Luckily, their snipers and riflemen had kept watch on the nearby rooftops, firing at any who dared to cross within range. Several men had already scrambled into nearby houses and taken up overwatch positions on several roofs.

"We have civilians, ma'am," another Ghost said to Li. "They're inside the houses we're using as perches. What should we do?"

"Can they cross the rooftops from one house to another?" she asked, ducking behind cover as more automatic weapons sprayed the street.

"Yes ma'am," he replied. "But there is a pregnant woman who is also present. It is not well to move-"

"Do what you have to," Li said. "But try and get them the hell out of there."

"WATCH THE ROOFS!" a man yelled. Li cursed, shouldered her rifle, and fired at a man with an RPG. He ducked out of site, but his partner, carrying rounds and an M16, was hit.

An RPG slammed into the ground, meters away from the tank, throwing everyone down.

"REPORT!" Li shouted, struggling to get herself up. She propped herself against a doorway and kept up a steady stream of fire at the man with the rocket.

Blood trickled from a deep gash on her face, and she began to breathe heavily.

"Three more gone," one of her subordinates said in despair. "I'm running low on ammo; mayb seven clips left."

Several men reported that they were also running low.

Li took a quick count. Of the fifteen members of Aizu team who were in the IFV and the HMMVW, five were now dead. Corporal Argus was out of commission, and three others were wounded.

Moreever, their prisoner, tied up, was stuck in a doorway; no one had taken the time to ascertain whether he was dead or not.

A bullet slammed into the shoulder of the turret gunner, hitting him where the flakvest ended. He shouted, and gripped his shoulder, sliding down back into the body of the IFV.

Li sighed. "Isnt it a bitch to be a Ghost?" she wondered. Originally from the slums of South Central LA, she had left America and joined the Ghost Brigade (Islandian equivalent of Foreign Legion) to escape being arrested for drug running and a possible murder.

Well, murder wasnt the way to describe it; the bastard had it coming. After all, he had raped one of Li's friends, so he deserved it.

Li slid down, putting her head against the barricade. More of her men were shouting at her now, telling her to keep up the fire.

She frowned, feeling herself doze off...

A voice crackled over hte static.

"This is Captain Du," the voice announced. "Hang in there, Aizu Team. Help is en route."

Sure enough, two pairs of helicopter gunships flew overhead, raining rockets and chain gun fire into the surrounding buildings. Higher overhead, an AY8 orbited, shooting out various buildings and firing smoke rockets into the area.

The Islandian forces, consisting of an entire mech. infantry battalion, were pinned down near a civilian area, but had dispatched its air assets ahead.

(OOC: for time-travel-doesn't-work reasons, this is the site that didn't just get help from the additional forces sent by the Islandians)

The transport helos approached the target area, and 48 special ops soldiers roped down from them. They took up positions on the rooftops surrounding the fighting, as well as places with good cover on the flanks of the mystery forces. They radioed the Islandian forces to let them know that help had arrived, and where they were (so as not to be shot by accident). Just then the gunships opened fire on the insurgents, killing them left and right. After their miniguns were dry, they began circling overhead, providing additional fire support from the soldiers inside.
After the minigun fire stopped, the special ops soldiers charged. Grenades and bullets flew through the air, and it appeared that the insurgents had been taken completely by surprise. The enemy forces, previously with the upper hand, appeared to be routed. The teams had sustained light casualties, with 3 dead and another 6 lightly wounded from the panicked firing of the enemy. The rest seemed to be OK. While the special ops replenished the ammo and supplies of the exhausted Islandian forces, and relieved them of their defensive positions, they awaited extraction from more transport helos, covered by fighter jets.
The extraction was successful, but the healthy Islandian forces that remained insisted that they make sure the other group, separated and also surrounded, was doing OK. They went to go check out the situation.

*Urumqi* Hudecian HQ

DeFonc excused himself to answer the door. Bursting in the Staff Sargeant could barely contain herself.

"Sir, we've tracked several calls coming from a safe house in Karamay, all directed to FSTX cells operating in Urumqi. Several on the day of General Zhao's assasination, and one in particular on seconds before the raid went to crap ..."

"We can't be talking about this like this.." Colonel DeFonc dragged her into the room and closed the door.

"Sir! One of the calls was made to a Captain Wang in the FSTX forces, and he was right outside the raided house. Within seconds the E. Islandian troops were attacked by 'Hudecians'... " Staff Sargeant Wilson finished and breathed deeply.

DeFonc was startled, but the pieces were falling into place. The FSTX forces had access to Hudecian weaponry, tactics and clothing. But why? Why were they trying to destabilize the region?

'Tamerlane'.... he thought at last... he wanted power.. but how would he get it... the Sinoese maybe?...

"Who made the call?"

"It was from an SOF guarding someone important, I didn't have access to see who." Wilson breathed a sigh of relief, DeFonc was taking this seriously.

For DeFonc that sealed it. The only one viewed with that amount of importance was 'Tamerlane'.

"Thank you Sargeant, you are dismissed." Wilson left the sealed room.

"Our problem may be larger than we think... the man responsible is the head of a very large and powerful militia... that numbers over 200 000... over half of whom are well trained and armed... courtesy of the Hudecian army. I know what you are thinking... what a short sighted thing to do.. arm locals ... but you must understand.. there is less than 50 000 of us to face off against over 1 million Sinoese troops... if they really wanted to, we'd all be dead in a matter of hours."

"We need to handle this is a very careful manner... Tamerlane is under our protection, so if he dies.. we might be blamed.. but if he lives.. he could foment a revolt. We might need the Sinoese to help."

She was thinking that maybe she wouldnt go home after this mission.

"Short sighted or not, we will not discuss that now," she said quickly. "The Islandian solution is to assassinate the upstarts and make it look like an accident; from what you have told me, it appears not wise inthis situation.

"First off, let us see what your leader may be thinking; does he want Hudecia out? East Islandia out? Bedou out? LRR out? Or Sino out? And how far is he willing to go? I'm betting this bastard will be willing to start a full out war, as he proved by attacking my soldiers today.

By now, the forces had retreated into the buildings, leaving, unfortunately, their dead behind on the streets. Inside, Pfc Au quickly slammed the door shut and hustled the surviving members of Aizu Team up the stairs, pulling Specialist Li over his shoulders.

As light as he thought she would be, she was still weighed down by her equipment, so Au hit the quick release straps on her harness and left her wearing only her flakvest, fatigues, boots, and armor.

The Islandians quickly ran into the helos, snipers and machine gunners laying down covering fire. Pfc Au glanced at the pregnant woman who was in the building, half frightened to death, and decided to drag her with him. The rest of her family had already been evacuated, and Au kept shouting to her in Mandarin that she would be ok.

They piled aboard an Mi-8 and shouted for the pilot to leave.

"PN forces, thank you for your concern," Au said later, when the helo was up and away from the rooftops. "We have been evacuated by LRR forces, and we no longer need your help. Thanks again, and direct all requests for alcohol to our commanding officer, General Xu."

178 Lawrence Marines, all of them Hans.
There happened to also be 33 Temujinni "Advisors" in Country.
Temujinnis were of course of Mogolian lineage, so these 211 men would blend fairly well in Xinjiang. He just wanted the Sino to place them there.
His advisor Terek stood next to him.
"It is a good plan sir, hopefully the Sino have realized we are a far better friend to have in your region then enemy."
"Indeed." the Sultan replied.
He continued "Has the messege been sent to the Sino as to where to meet us?"

"It is being sent as we speak, we are requestin the Highest ranking official they can muster, however arent you worried they try to capture you? or kill you?" Terek stared at the 211 men and women. checking weapons and horses and camels he did not directly at the Sultan, ever.

"It is unfortunate that they do not have allies like Erinin and the Nuclear research and testing range in Hibernia."

The Sultan stared at the Special Operation Troops, he stared at the horizon, he stared out past everything.
"What did you say?"

"I apologize Sultan, I said, it is too bad they d not have an ally who has a testing range designed for such a purpose as we do."

The Sultan stared at Terek.

"It is obviously too late to undo the damage done here but, damn it, I should have thought of that. Transmit a messege to the Sino that we can supply a large testing area free of protest, and secure for secrecy.
I cant believe this didnt occur to me. And as well inform them we would like to begin negotiations as soon as possible. Oh yes and get an ETA on their representatives arrival.

'Tamerlane' watched the sun as it rose silently into the sky. Like the sun, today, he would rise back into his position of power over others. Glancing over his shoulder he saw the two SOFs enter the room with him. Something was different, the way they carried their guns was more aggressive, more hostile. Did they know? Had they figured it out? Still, he had come too far to turn back now.

"I'm sorry gentlemen, but I have somewhere important to go, and you cannot come with me." He stated matter-of-factly, his back still towards the two men. Shots rang out from across the courtyard as sniper's bullets, missing Tamerlane by only inches imbeded themselves into the skulls of the Hudecian guards.

He picked up his cell phone and this time called an FSTX unit near the border with Kyrgyzstan. "Follow the Sinoese to the meeting place, and report to me when you get there... we may have to liquidate them so be prepared."

'Tamerlane' walked out of his building and towards a prearranged but secret news conference. In his briefcase he carried the taped confessions of the assassins and the documented explosives evidence from the blast in Urumqi. He looked into the courtyard and saw his men quickly dragging the dead bodies of several other Hudecian guards out of sight.

"Sir, we've lost contact with the safe house." Staff Sargeant Wilson reported silently to DeFonc. DeFonc had been expecting such an action but his hands were tied until that moment.

The HMMVWs, SSX-1 MBTs, and the YW531HWCZ-S IFVs rumbled through the desert, supported by helicopter gunships on the side. Higher overhead, AY8 gunships orbited, their sensor arrays scanning the desert for possible movement.

Under General Xu's orders, the borders were to be sealed, and she had deployed the remaining Desert Raiders to do so. Checkpoints, complete with barbed wire, concrete barricades, and bristling with weaponry, were set up on the main roads, and pictures of Tamerlane were distributed to all units.

CNN reporter Carol Burns soon found herself surrounded by angry Islandian troops of the First Storm Division. Mostly, they simply stared at her, but every so often, a language specialist would arrive and speak to her in some vaguely worded diatribes on the evilness of Americans and their media in general. It had been three hours since she had first arrived, and from what she had heard, other news services, particularly American ones, had also been detained and harrassed.

Carol decided to go ahead and broadcast anyway. "There's probably something going down," she said to her cameraman. "Let's spread the word."

He nodded and they rigged their equipment for broadcast, ready in a matter of minutes. He flipped her the thumbs up signal, and she nodded, setting a grim expression on her face as the camera started to roll.

"This is Carol Burns, live, from Xinjiang," she said quickly. "Due to the heightened security alerts following the ambush of a Hudecian convoy, the East Islandian and Hudecian garrisons have imposed rigid martial law. Last night, we have evidence that-"

Suddenly, the display burst into static, and the power relays switched off. Burns cursed. She quickly pulled out her SAT-phone, which was also knocked out.

"Damn it!" she swore. "Those Islandians!"

All across the city, reporters and news services found their equipment non functional; apparently, two small yield EMPs were detonated, leaving nothing but military grade electronic equipment still working (most Islandian military grade systems have a two-three second reboot time; the more advanced ones usually have one second reboot times). It would take hours for the civilians to restart their equipment, particularly if they were connected to satellites (cellphones and satellite broadcasting systems).

Four years ago

"BITCH!" her father screamed as his hand descended on her face. "I adopted you, took you off the streets, and this is how you repay me?! By killing a man?!"

Mandy glared at him, her face red and stinging. She didnt say a word, but deep in her heart, she knew that he was right. He knew what she had done, and he was probably worried about her more than anything.

That made the experience all the more painful.

"So Yumi gets raped and you expect me to do nothing?" she roared back, slamming a chair into the wall in her fury. "YOU EXPECT ME TO STAND BY AND LET THAT F*CK GET AWAY WITH IT?!"

"What can you do?!" her father shouted back. "You'll just get yourself into prison! They were going to be convicted anyway!"

Mandy was silent. From what she had read on previous rape cases, the trespassers were not very likely to get lengthy prison terms, especially not for rape. That was the main reason she had killed the rapists anyway, shot them at point blank range with a stolen Glock.

"I had to do it, dad," she said, her voice pleading. she knew her father wasnt really angry at her-just concerned, and frightened. "Please understand. I dont want you to hate me or think of me as a murderer for the rest of my life."

Her father's face softened, and now he looked more troubled than angry. "What you did was foolish," he said quietly, fighting back tears and turning away from her. His voice was stony, although Mandy knew he would crack soon. "I know you thought it was right, and I know you wanted some street justice for Yumi. But..."

His voice trailed off and he sighed. "I've made arrangements," he said. "It'll be hard to get out of the country, but I have a friend who can help you. I know you bought your own plane tickets, but now this may not be such a good thing to do. traveling under your real name."

He tossed her two passports. "This one is for you; the other is for Yumi. I also bought airplane tickets for you; you're going to be going to Islandia, since they're one of the only nations that's close enough to America but wont allow extradition."

Mandy's eyes watered as she flipped through the pages of her passport. She could never return, she knew. And her dad would probably get into trouble for this, maybe even be hauled in as an accomplice.

"I'll never forget this, dad," she said to him, quickly enveloping him in a fierce hug. "Take care of mom while I'm gone."

Her father inhaled deeply, taking in a final scent of his adopted daughter before she left. For sixteen years he had raised her, fought to give her a way out of poverty...and all for what? Circumstances (and his daughter's fierce, proud nature) had led to all of this, and he suddenly felt immensely sorry taht he couldnt do better for either his daughter or her best friend, poor Yumi.

"I'm sorry I hit you," he said quietly. "You take care of yourself over there."

She kissed him on the cheek. "I will," she said. he handed her her favorite backpack, which he had already stuffed with necessities, including American currency, some clothing, and toiletries, and gave it to her. She took the pack quickly, not daring to look back-

And then she was gone.

LRR base area
The present

Mandy woke slowly, her vision wet from the tears that had filled her eyes. Had it really been four years? she wondered. Four years since she left America with her childhood friend, fleeing her past? four years since she joined the Ghost Brigade to provide for her friend and allow the two of them a legitimate way (the only way perhaps) to cast suspicion off the two, who were both Americans?

Mandy shook her head, feeling sudden pain flood her senses. She was in a white building, awash with the distinct smell of antiseptic.

A hospital.

Then her memories came rushing back; the raid, the subsequent firefight...her friends and comrades dying in her arms...screaming, in English, over the radio in her distress call...the long helicopter flight where she was barely conscious.

Mandy quickly reached her finger to her face, searching for wounds. She felt the raised, bumpy surfaces of several deep scars, and winced, not so much from the pain as from the sudden realization that her once-pristine face, the source of so much pride to her, was now pocked and marked by combat.

She tried to get to her feet-and quickly fell, feeling pain as the IV lines jerked into her skin. She gasped for breath, and propped herself against hte side of the bed.

What a dream, she thought. Or maybe a nightmare.

She had to buy the LRR people some beer later, she reminded herself. That was how everyone liked to repay their debts, was it not?

By now, the LRRA field hospital was filled up with a lot of people. East Islandians, Hudecians, Graznians, the odd LRR pilot, even fighters from the various factions in the city. Lots of civilians, too.

Mandy looked at the LRR pilot through glazed eyes, and blinked slowly. She noticed that he did not seem to have the coarse features of an infantryman.

Probably a pilot, she thought. She tapped at his feet, and waved to get his attention.

"Hi," she said, her voice muffled beneath all the bandages. She decided to speak in English, since the LRR military was probably more likely to speak that than Islandian or Chinese. "Thanks for coming to save us."

Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a figure move towards her. It was Au, and he grinned at her when he noticed she was awake.

"Morning ma'am," he said, although technically he was on the same rank level as her. She had been passed over for promotion twice already, and that endeared her to her squadmates. "Good to see you up and about."

He reached down and picked her up, gently lifting her back into bed. She blushed, aware of her situation, and he put a blanket over her.

"Back to sleep," he said, before turning back to his business. He lifted a crate of assorted alcohol (various beers, sake, Chardonnay, and even two bottles of Agrigentian grappa) and put it at the foot of the pilot's bed. "This is for you," he said, bowing low. "Thank you for your help, and I hope I may be able to repay your bravery sometime."

Au quickly left, stepping over the wounded, and made his way outside. He punched in some numbers and called Captain Du, his superior.

"Yes, sir, we are fine now," he said quickly. "But we took heavy casualties. More to the point, the bodies are still in the alleyway..."

Au paused as he took a look at the nearest television monitor, which was tuned to CNN, as per Captain Du's instructions. "Yes sir," he said glumly as he watched the bodies of his fallen comrades be stripped and paraded through the streets. "Just like the Americans, eh sir?"

*******
As the militants stripped the bodies, however, AY8 gunships poured fire down on them. Unlike America, Islandia did not take kindly to militants who liked to flaunt their victory.

The gunner smiled viciously as the figures below were scattered, and some fell, never to move again.

"Should we hit them with heavier artillery?" he asked.

"Negative," the pilot replied. "Just use the chain gun."

The gunner shrugged. For his purposes, the chain gun was fine. Besides, with the news services knocked out, who would be here to witness such an event?

The EMP had struck the complex directly. The half dozen or so local news agencies gathered at one side of the group of buildings were completely in the dark... literally because they were inside a building at the time.

Within seconds dozens of Hudecian MPs, SOFs and regular ground troops were storming the complex. If any of their allies had troops in the area they would be included in the raid. However, the true Hudecians would be sporting a red bandana tied around their left shoulder. Those Hudecians without one would be killed.

The complex was separated into 5 buildings. The main building was flanked on either side by two smaller barracks. And at the northern edge of the complex there was two small storage buildings, one of which was holding the media.

The initial shots would not be heard by most of the FSTX forces on the site because they were fired from silenced MP-5s. Soon however, the familiar crack of M-16 fire and C-7 Diemaco fire would be heard by everyone including the media.

Travelling in groups of 5, the 50 odd men began spreading out through the walled complex. The element of surprise was powerful and within seconds a disoriented 'Tamerlane' was grabbed by the Hudecian SOFs.

Still, now the tricky part came. Helicopter evac was called for as FSTX forces numberinng over 500 closed in to save their leader.

OCC: Alright if the LRRA sends in Mi-8s to help?

IC:

Over the rooftops, a formation of 15 Mi-8s, supported by 5 Mi-35s with LRRA para-riflemen aboard approaches the compound, ready to evacuate the allied troops.

The door gunners, armed with Kord 12.7mm MGs, look out the sides of the Mi-8s, towards the city. Armed men can be seen running through the streets, drawing Ak-74 and Ak-5 fire from the para-riflemen in the Mi-35s.

Corporal Chin half dragged the Uighur commander up the stairs to the rooftop of the main building. The commander had been heavily sedated and drugged by them as soon as he was captured. Waving at one the Mi-8s to come over he ducked down to avoid the constant sniper fire that was harassing the Hudecian forces.

He could hear the officers barking commands to the troops down below. Up the stairs behind him the rest of his 5 man team came up and began laying fire down on the snipers in one of the barracks. Switching on his radio, he called his captain.

"Sir, we've got some hostiles in the barracks. They're likely guards stationed here." They all had received orders to take no prisoners from the compound. In fact, they were ordered to ensure that all of them were given quick passage into the afterlife.

"Got it corporal, we'll take care of them.. warn those helicopters that we're going to blow the northern barracks..."

At the base of the building one of the regular army units were preparing to use an anti-tank personal missile launcher on the barrack's wall. A MP unit was standing by to storm in with the MP-5Ks afterwards and clear out anyone who survived. The regulars were anxious about engaging in urban warfare because their M-16s were bulky and hard to manage in small corridors.

*Urumqi*

Hudecian troops had received orders to make their presence known while the power was out. Roaming the streets in APCs, Abrams, or even on foot, they treated the entire area as hostile territory.

Colonel DeFonc turned to Line General Xu after listening in on the latest update from Karamay.

"General Xu, would I be correct in assuming that you would like to .. punish those responsible for the death of your troops?" Colonel DeFonc's finger tapped on a map of Urumqi, his finger landing squarely on an apartment building in the southern part of the city. "His name is Captain Wang. He will be heavily guarded by FSTX forces, of whom he is the leader. But with all the chaos out there I'm positive that any 'friendly fire' incidents will be easily discounted as ... collateral damage."

The helicopter pilots and crews watch as the barracks buildings are blown in, and Hudecian troops storm the survivors. The crackle of M-16 fire can be heard over the rotor noise.

"This is Dragon flight calling Hudecian ground control, we are ready to start evac, over."

Meanwhile, another Mi-8, this one armed not only with 12.7mm MGs but also with rockets and cannon pods, sets down on the rooftop of the main building. An LRRA paratrooper armed with an FN-90 emerges as the clamshell doors open, and helps drag the captured commander into the helicopter before taking a Dragunov round in his shoulder. Kord MGs spray the window which was the source of the shot, and then the helicopter lifts off, the domestic engines allowing it to gain altitude much more rapidly than the original.

As the FTX forces closed in, orbiting AY8 gunships began to rain down a hail of fire on them, including rockets, chain guns, and even 30mm cannon fire.

Artillery based several km away began to fire away with precision munitions at the outer edges of the compound, hopefully taking out FSTX forces.

"Certainly," Xu said. She began issuing orders, and soon, three commando units and an entire battalion was inbound to Wang's apartment.

The battalion quickly set up a perimeter with their armored vehicles, allowing no one to enter or exit, while the commandos quickly surveyed their maps one final time, and boarded helicopters and armored HMMVWs. Snipers took their positions, their rifles aiming at moving targets through windows.

The helos dropped off soldiers on the roof, and the others simply crashed through the door. Smoke grenades slammed through windows and sputtered yellow smoke, reducing visibility to mere feet.

"Sir, we've made sure that all FSTX forces in the base itself are liquidated. The forces fighting us now are local units." Captain Markov ducked down as the reporting sargeant took a bullet in the upper arm. Swearing, he called for a med-evac. Turning to his radio operator he barked a quick order. "Tell our men to keep fighting, and call the 3rd Marine Expeditionary division based outside Karamay. Have them shuttle in more men and ammo."

From outside of Karamay, 30 Hudecian Blackhawk helicopters began moving over the city, heading for the battle site.

On the ground, Hudecian ground troops had managed to convince the majority of the FSTX forces that there was yet again another group of imposter Hudecians fomenting trouble. However, they were all assured that if everyone stayed calm and stood down that the crisis would abate.

Corporal Chin hopped into the helicopter with the Uighur commander along with his 4 men. Heading to the pilot he quickly barked an order. "Take the helicopter to Urumqi immediately, this is the commander of the FSTX forces, we need him in Urumqi ASAP."

Nodding, the Pilot turns the Mi-8 towards Urmqui, followed by two Mi-35 escorts.

About half an hour later, the mi-8 and escorts arrive at the Hudecian base at Urmqui.

Back at the compound, the LRRA medevac Mi-8s begin to take on casualties. Once filled to capacity, the Mils head for grazni's Delta Base, where the LRRA has a field hospital set up. The armed Mils circle and land, depositing LRRA para-riflemen. Armed with Ak-74s and RPG-7s, among other things, they carry quite a bit of firepower, especially with their MBT-LAW missiles. They had been swapped for the usual RBS-56 BILL ATGMs because of the shorter ranges involved in city fighting.

After depositing troops, the helicopters turn and head back to base.

Then, an E. Islandian camera crew is brought into the room and he is filmed ordering the FSTX to stand down and obey the Hudecian High Command's instructions. His speech was slurred, but that could be expected because his head was bandaged like he had been shot there.

The E. Islandian crew is then shuffled out of the room quickly and sent back to the conference with General Yang.

IC:The sultan waited atthe Kyrgy border no word had come about the SIno coming or even respondingarrogant, no matter.
He ordered his men to move out. The 211 had old Soviet Style AK-47s,RPGs, their ammo was circa the Soviet regime rule in this regine.
They had no idetification, they slected because none had identifiing tatoos, they could speak the local languange fluent or with a russian accent which did not seem out of place in this region, the only communications equipment they had were cell phones, Bedou cell phones but then that would not be out of place either.
Their orders were simple, observe, locals always knew more then outsiders, with out being sodiers they could obtain much more information.
The Sultan also considered redistributing his forces, he had not have so much concentration on the the eastern border, with chaos in west of him his flanks were exposed. That would change, before his IRish allies turned this place to glass. It was starting to cost them so much money having forces here that were demanding a war with someone, just to justify the expenditure.

With General Yang wrapping up the news conference with the television feed from 'Tamerlane' it seemed like all the angles were convered. The incriminating tapes and documents were recovered and destroyed, 'Tamerlane was in custody, his forces neutralized. The Hudecian reputation here was near the gutter, but in a few weeks that'd be forgotten.

The standoff with the Sinoese was still going on, but compared to the firefights with the FSTX, it would be simple and bloodless.

*Karamay*

The street battles had died down soon after the release of 'Tamerlane's' orders. Hudecian MPs were clearing the streets of bodies and debris, while regular police made an appearance to direct traffic.

*Urumqi*

The chaos ended once power was restored. Observers would blame the Hudecians for letting the chaos getting out of control and the E. Islandians for carelessly knocking out power across the city with one of their 'damned EMPs'.

Hudecian MPs promised a full investigation into how an E. Islandian EMP was accidentally detonated inside Urumqi but initial reports indicated that the EMP was being snuck into the city by E. Islandian forces when it detonated. General Yang strongly urged the Islandians to take better care of the weaponry, after all, who knows what could happen if advanced weaponry fell into the wrong hands.

The heavily armed LRRA para-riflemen man checkpoints throughout Karamay, checking for weapons in passing vehicles. The sight of an RPG-7 or KPVT heavy MG pointed at the hood of one's car compells the occupants to comply with the weapons searches...quite obviously firepower was on the riflemens' side.

In Urmqui and Karamay, LRRA medical and engineering units restore utilities and evacuate civilians and military personnel in need of medical attention to the sprawling hospital compound at Delta Base. The sight of LRRA Mi-8 medevac helicopters becomes quite common.

The engineer and medical ground teams can travel in near impunity, with vehicles resistant to RPGs and high-caliber automatic cannon fire, as well as mines and home-made explosives.

----HUDECIA POST----

HUDECIA AGREES TO WITHDRAW

HP - In a major diplomatic coup, the Hudecian government announced its intentions to withdraw from Xinjiang within the month. Starting this week, Xiannese troops will begin taking over responsibilities from Hudecian peacekeepers.

The announcement came just hours after Hudecian Prime Minister Matsuda and Xiannese Prime Minister Yeh met to discuss the issue, although analysts had been suspecting such an arrangement for quite some time.

It is expected that Hudecia will offer safe transport to any citizens who feel unsafe under Xiannese control, however, it is not expected that many will take up the offer. Likely candidates for refugees are members of the FSTX, the Uighur militia that opposed Sinoese rule but was supported by the Hudecian government. It is worried that Xiannese officials will turn such people over to the Sinoese.
