Imperialism (Setup Thread)

For those of you that liked 'Colonization - 1612', and since that thread has ceased to exist, I've been kicking around another RP idea....
Here's the pitch....
The basic rules are
No more than five naval ships to start with and no more than 4,000 soldiers or marines.
One large city of up to 10,000 people and four or five smaller towns or forts of 2,000.
These may change according to the answers to the following questions.
Where would you folks like to stage this RP?
An imaginary continent (someone would have to do a map, I guess)
Or, I have several RL continents in mind:
-Asia (focusing on India, Burma, and China)
-Indonesia and Oceania
-Africa
Finally, what time period would you guys prefer?
The time would determine what technology we can provide our soldiers with, etc. I would like to do it in 1870, but I here are the choices:
-1750
-1870
-1910
So, feel free to post here or send me a telegram

I'd choose either somewhere in the 1700s or 1800s. Any earlier and it gets kind of frustrating realizing that many things haven't been invented yet. I'd choose the 1870s, too.

As for where it would take place, I'd say it could be anywhere.

Hmmmm. The more I think about it, the more I like it. If we do the 1870's, we could potentially use the entire world as the setting.

I like this idea... Although I would suggest 1900...

Well, why don't we go ahead and get started. You guys tell me which continent you guys want and we can settle on a date (1870 vs. 1900)

How about a compromise?
1885? Its right in the middle of 1879 and 1900.....

1885 is a good year. If we can all settle on that, how about a continent? Is Africa alright with everyone?

Africa sounds fine to me.

If its more sea orientated, I'd advise against it, as Africa has so few ports, but on land, that would be interesting, I'm trying to make a history (before the warpstone meteor crashed and made skaven)about my nation, is it ok if I join?

I'd be half tempted to say the southeast asian islands would make an excellent setting....Lots of islands for everyone to try to lay claim to. Africa, on the other hand, is really, really big.

There are too many Island RPs, something new, maybe an imaginary continent? With a little bit of all terrain types?

My only problem with Imaginary Continents is that it's difficult to pinpoint everyone. But, if someone is willing to whip up a map and post it here, I'd be cool with that.

If not, the general consensus seems to be Africa.

I would recommend 1870, because then we could use the entire world. I porbably could get a map, but I don't know if it'll work that well.

Ahh, i was a fan of the 1612 thread... stupid forums deleted it.
i'd be okay with the late 1800's, but Africa ? i would prefer Southeast (if i saw that correctly ?) Asia, Africa has to many deserts for my liking, BUT, oh well. when do we start ?

I would also recommend the 1870s, with the setting in Europe.

I made a map in 2 minutes, it sucks, but o well, can't figure out how to posit

Crap, oh well.

Ok folks, tell me how you all like this scenario. If a majority favor it, I will start a new thread. Just state "Yes" if you like it, or "No" and then a reason.

Southeast Asia & Australia, 1870
This will include China, Indochina (Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Loas), India, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Australia.

...We get a continent AND islands!

Of course, new zealand'll hafta be in this too.
Sounds great to me!

1870 works fine, just after the RL war betwen the states, so much of the same technology would be used i imagine.

Wrong, many european armies had repeating rifles, the US civilians largely had repeating rifles. The only thing that kept the repeating rifle out of the hands of most US soldiers was politics.

The repeating rifle was around during the civil war, as was the gatling gun, and other interesting weapons.

By 1870 most soldiers had repeating rifles, or at least breechloading rifles (ie. Martini Henry rifle)

I think you must bare in mind, many NS nations politics vary from RL politics of the time, as do their military tactics.
so, most if not all nations there will have repeating/breech loading rifles for instance, but the uses will varry depending on thier tactics.

That's not necessary true.

The American military, post-Civil War is still one of the most powerful in the world with a powerful naval force of ironclads, a military with gatling guns, breechloading artillery, repeating rifles, etc...

It's settled then, Southeast Asia, 1870.
I will start the thread soon, and post the link here but it's late.
Anyway, a few quick things.

To start, everyone starts off with one island, or a stretch of coast line no bigger than say, Bangledesh (everyone got an atlas?)

No one can claim anypart of China, yet. Everyone starts off with one trading warehouse in Canton and Shanghai, China.

More to come tomorrow!
