Live televised statement from Prime Minister Ian McKinney:
Last night, at around 2100 hours, High Chairman Octo von Strausser had a heart attack. He was rushed to hospital where he lay in intensive care for 4 hours. I was called to his side just before he died as he named me his heir to the leadership of Octovonia, all members of the High Council were present. In his last words, he expressed that he wished 50% of his personal wealth to be given to the Octovonian people. Octo von Strausser died soon after, he is survived by his wife and his son, Helmut.
It is now my duty to lead this country effectively in von Strausser's absence. I have begun some social reforms to loosen the grip of the government on its people. We have also dropped the 'People's' from our formal title and now shall be known as simply the Republic of Octovonia. I have begun withdrawing our military forces from all conflicts and have begun some economic reforms. I shall miss greatly my long chats with von Strausser, he was like a father to me. In his honour we are creating a national park, as he had always had a fondness for nature.
I wish to conclude by reminding the people of Octovonia that we will need you to be strong in the coming days. This week is formally a week of mourning for our departed leader as we prepare for his state funeral. The leaders of foreign nations will be invited to attend the solemn ceremony in which former High Chairman Octo von Strausser's ashes will be scattered over the new Strausser National Park.
