OOC: This is the continuation of the terrorist attack thread found here. http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=339479

McQuaide Joint Operations Center, New Dublin

The ground scouts sent into Azerbaijan found a network of terrorist training camps that essentially constituted a state within the state of Azerbaijan. They were observed by the scout teams to move into the countryside, collecting taxes from villages and farms. They were observed cultivating poppy fields, ostensibly a source of income for their operations. Three large buildings were identified as bomb-making plants after vehicles carrying various chemicals were seen entering.

Acting Prime Minister Alexandre Karpov had a difficult decision to make. He didn’t have the special forces troops needed to isolate and surround each of the compounds without risking the possibility that some terrorists could escape. Invasion, however, could have dangerous consequences if another state were to object.

Karpov had no choice, though. A scout-sniper team had reported minutes ago that a truck was being loaded with rockets, similar to the ones used in the Tbilisi attack. So, Karpov made the first, and what could be the last, real policy decision of his career.

“Full offensive deployment. Spearhead units will move into the cities of Saki, Ganca, and Mingacevir. They will secure the roads into and out of the border region, and ensure no one goes in or goes out. Bombers will drop pamphlets in all the native languages, telling the people what we’re doing. I also want a message out to the international community… Make this sound as good as we can.

McQuaide-Azerbaijan Border

Fifteen minutes after the orders came in from New Dublin, thousands of armored units began rolling towards the borders of Azerbaijan. At the same time, the first wave of military transports were rising to the air full of airborne infantrymen and BMD-3 airdrop-capable infantry fighting vehicles. B-1B and Tu-160B bombers were launching in order to commence pamphlet raids. EC-130J Compass Call II aircraft began jamming communications frequencies and transmitting information to the Azeri people. Fighters, including the stealthy MT-90 unmanned fighter, were beginning to take up patrol positions.

Three Rear Area Raiding Brigades were the first across the border. They were made up exclusively of BMP-3 fighting vehicles and their variants, and were thus the most highly mobile ground units in the McQuaide arsenal. Their mission was to outflank the terror camps in Northwestern Azerbaijan, and shut down a series of roads and trails that would be the most obvious escape routes. They would be joining airmobile motor rifle brigades that were now beginning to drop from the sky over their targets.

Overall, the following units have been deployed into Azerbaijan:

McQuaide Diplomatic Release, Four Hours Later

Citizens of the Civilized World,

Four hours ago, military units of the McQuaide Self Defense Force were ordered into the Northwestern border region of Azerbaijan by Acting Prime Minister Alexandre Karpov. These units, made up of nine combat divisions and a variety of smaller units, were ordered to secure road junctions into and out of the region.

This action was necessary to ensure that the estimated 2,500 terrorists and militants in the region are unable to escape. These terrorist camps have been verified by special forces personnel and by the confessions of several suspects in the attack on the McQuaide city of Tbilisi that claimed more than 3,000 lives.

The Commonwealth of McQuaide understands fully the seriousness of this act, but desires that the international community respect the rights of the Commonwealth to defend its citizens. The government of Azerbaijan have proven themselves unable to govern the region in question, and have allowed these terrorists to propagate. The rights of the innocent civilians in this region will be respected, and sovereignty returned to the Azeri people as soon as the terrorist threat is removed.

The Commonwealth of McQuaide at this time desires to ask the international community to send observers to supervise this action, and verify for yourselves that no violations of human rights are being committed. Furthermore, intelligence liaison officers are invited to contact the McQuaide Internal Intelligence Bureau via diplomatic channels. We will be more than happy to share with the international community any intelligence gathered about possible attacks against other states.

Official Statement; Minister of Foreign Affairs

Despite your promises to Azeri people, Grenval must condemn this act. The reason for our condemnation is that the situation does not require a full invasion force. Becuase McQuaide has ordered a full invasion, Greval will support the Azeri government's sovereignty. We understand the necessity of peacekeeping and counter-terrorism forces, but not that of a full invasion force. If this escalates into war, Grenval will consider deploying troops to counter your blatant attack on foreign borders.

Parthian forces sat arrayed on the Parthian-Azerbaijani border. Muslim raiders had often crossed to attack the Zoroastrian empire of Parthia, and now they would pay.

300 155mm guns along the border opened fire on the border. Shells tore into villages and terrain leaving a moonlike landscape. An 800mm Railgun fired every so often. 3 Armoured divisions of 5,000 tanks per division and 7 infantry divisions with 25,000 men in each one poured into the Naxcivan. Twice that number crossed the border into Armenia proper.

A-10s flew in the air above, strafing armoured columns and softening up military targets. F-15s escorted the support aircraft and attacked Azerbaijiani Migs.

To the Government of Mc Quaide-
We stand behind your effort, terrorism from Azerbaijan has effected both our

Ahead of the armored column General Daryush Savhadkohi could see an Azeri line of T-82 tanks headed for his Abrams. He looked at the pitiful group, thirty tanks.... and behind him he had whole division supporting him, 1500 Tanks stood ready to pounce on these Azeris.

However to flank these pitful fools could be deadly, this must be a trap, he thought. "Seargeant, get me some A-10s and tell them to pop these tanks."

Three A-10s swooped over the advancing Persians and headed straight for the Azeris, openeing fire with the vulcan cannons and unleashing a barrage of hellfire missiles. Smoke obscured the area where the tanks were and when it cleared burning hulls of the T-82s were strewn about. "General, the A-10s have spotted fortified trenchlines in a wooded area surrounding the tanks. They were trying to lure you into a kill zone." Daryush knew this and pondered how to take the fortified area. "Get me a napalm strike on the Azeri lines, and seargeant, prepare an artillery barrage. Use White phosphorus and cluster shells.

Along the lines the division's 100 MLRS and 100 M-109s adjusted themselves to fire on coordinates spotted by the A-10s.

Parthian Headquarters Position

The MH-53N Pave Low V Special Forces helicopter's pilots were nervous as they settled their bird down outside the Parthian HQ. Although they had transmitted, confirmed, and reconfirmed their intentions, it was always a scary proposition to land a helicopter in the headquarters of a foreign army's offensive.

Before the massive rotors even stopped turning, McQuaide 26th Special Forces Brigade liaison officers began to disembark and unload their communications equipment. Their orders were to set up as soon as possible, to allow the Parthian commander encoded access to the McQuaide intelligence network of radar, satellite, and scout feeds, as well as make possible encoded communications between the two newly allied forces.

Laki, Azerbaijan

The first to drop into Azerbaijan were members of the McQuaide 22nd Airborne Infantry Brigade, of the 6th Composite Airborne. They would be joined soon by members of the independent 25th Reinforced Airmobile Brigade Combat Team, a heliborne unit equipped with the flexible and capable Elias EA-24C transport helicopter. Soon after that, mechanized vehicles from the 58th Airborne Motor Rifle Division would be dropped to provide support. Pathfinder special forces troops had marked the drop zones, although several troopers would still be injured dropping into the mountainous terrain. They hoped, however, that these would be the worst of the casualties.

30km North of Ganca, Azerbaijan

From a treeline, a dismounted ground scout scanned the massive field with his night vision scope. Poppies, millions of them, stretched across a field that must have measured 40 square kilometers. They would have been beautiful, were it not for what the scout knew was on the other side. JSTARS had noted the movement of vehicles into the opposite treeline. Switching over to Infrared, the scout could see clearly that the vehicles were outdated T-55 tanks.

“Overlord, this is Spectre Six, prepare to copy scout report… Count 120, repeat 120 tracked vehicles, model Tango Five Five tank. Several have IR spotlights operating, and I have dismounted infantry in the field scouting ahead.”

Back in a M-4 Command Vehicle, Lieutenant General Andrei Popov nodded. He know the Iron Cheetah Main Battle Tanks of his 1st Armored Division could easily wipe out the T-55s, but he wasn’t going to take any chances.

“Fire mission, I want a full battery fire from my MLRS systems onto that treeline, followed by the 155s. Antiarmor rounds first for those tanks, then phosphorous rounds in the fields to get the infantry.”

Three minutes later the MLRS systems had emplaced, fired, and began moving on. 1,244 submunitions soon were separating from their rockets and raining down on the tanks and armored vehicles, followed by the massive 155mm anti-armor rounds.

10 Miles north of Xankandi-

The artillery had adjusted themselves and one of the guns had fired a smoke round to show the position of where the artillery barrage would fall. The A-10 could see the smoke going off around the fortified trench and radioed back. "Direct hit, you have the right coordinates." Daryush barked into the radio, "fire for effect!!!" MLRS, M-109s, and 120mm Mortars opened fire on the positions with the MLRS firing cluster munitions which exploded in air sending infantry-killing bomblets everywhere. Mortars fired airburst rounds which showered infantry with shrapnel. M-109s lobbed incindiary rounds onto the Azeri lines, burning the infantry with white phosphorus. After 30 seconds the barrage stopped and the Persians advanced forward.

The isolated Naxcivan province of Azerbaijan has been captured, local reistance is confined to rebels who are doing terror attacks on my troops.

Caspian Coast- Parthian-Azeri border

The 4th Immortal Division, 25,000 troops in M2-A3 IFVs, were being loaded onto Hovercraft transports capable of carrying tanks. Around them the 10th and 4th Air Cavalry divisions were being readied for departure.

Baku, Azerbaijan-
30 B-2 stealth bombers were deployed for a surgical strike on the Azerbaijani capital. Each of the bombers carried two 5000 lb smart bombs and Capt. Bijan Taheri knew where these bombs were headed. He sighed to himself, another strike on SAM sites an radar, in his case he was to hit one of each and both of them were on his built in Map on his HUD, too easy. He pulled slightly to his right until he was told to stop and then, his co pilot dropped the bomb.

The radar below exploded in a storm of light, brightening the bombsight of the copilot. He pulled towards a collection of SAM batteries and did the same procedure.

That night Parthian Pilots destroyed 23 SAM sites, 3 Radars, two power plants, two railway yards, and fifteen radar controlled guns. Fourteen hit military infastructure. One bomb unfortunatley had a faulty guidance system and exploded 300 meters off target near an apartment building. We apologise for this unintentional damage and will pay a cash settlement to the victims' families after this war's conclusion.

Ganca, Azerbaijan

Brigadier General Igor Trengovich was the commander of what was in his opinion one of the world’s most fearsome urban combat units. The 24th Reinforced Mechanized Brigade Combat Team was equipped, trained, and organized almost exclusively for operations in urban terrain. Utilizing Clan Smoke Jaguar-built Merkava-4 designs and CSJ-designed Infantry Fighting Vehicles, the 24th was one of the most expensively equipped units in the McQuaide arsenal.

Today, Trengovich’s mission was to establish control of the city of Ganca, largest of the three cities that ringed the lawless border region with McQuaide. The 24th had been assigned this mission because of the size of the city, and the strong Azeri separatist presence in the city. One cell of separatist terrorists had been identified in the city, with two others suspected. On his flanks, the McQuaide 1st Armored Division was rolling past his positions to establish an outer perimeter and protect the 24th.

Trengovich ordered three battalions of his best armor to enter the city first, under orders to secure the center of the city. The CSJ Merkava-4 tanks each carried eight infantrymen, making the large tanks essentially the most well-armed and protected infantry fighting vehicles in the world. The infantry would be essential in protecting the tanks in the urban terrain.

These tank battalions were followed by Nova Cat IFVs, well armored vehicles with 100mm cannon capable of engaging light tanks or bunker complexes. These vehicles carried more infantrymen, who would begin the house-to-house searches for Azeri weapons caches and terrorist cell activity. They would strike quickly, and then immediately establish order in the city to prevent rioting or looting.

Muffled explosions and gunfire attested to the resistance being offered by the terrorists and the Azeri Home Guard. Trengovich’s radio occasionally transmitted reports of company-sized units resisting, but nothing greater.

Laki, Azerbaijan

Here, the McQuaide 6th Composite Airborne Division had already established control. A vital road junction in the area, Laki was the first to fall to the McQuaide armed forces. The 6th Composite Airborne, made up of an airborne mechanized unit, four airborne infantry units, and an airmobile infantry unit, was a flexible offensive unit capable of much greater firepower than the typical airborne infantry unit. At the present, the division’s 6th Engineering Brigade was establishing a short earthen runway in a clearing south of the city, to allow C-130 aircraft to land heavier equipment and artillery. AH-1Z attack helicopters patrolled overhead as the 19th and 20th Airborne Infantry Brigades secured the city.

Saki, Azerbaijan

As the closest city to Russia and Chechnya, McQuaide commanders were more concerned with the possibility of foreign intervention here than any terror attacks. The city was a pacifist one, with no known terror presence. The 2nd Light Armored Cavalry Regiment was the first to enter the city, followed quickly by the 2nd Armored and the 5th Mechanized Divisions. These units established defensive positions outside the city, secured the roads in and out, and sent in small Military Police units to provide security within the city.

Mingacevir, Azerbaijan

Here, the 1st Army Group made its headquarters. The corps-level signals brigade, aviation brigade, engineering brigade, and air defense brigades all established themselves here before deploying field detachments to provide support to the three perimeter cities. The 11th and 12th Motor Rifle Divisions provided security for the area, and many of the high-mobility striking units had camps here from which they could mount attacks against the terror camps nestled inside the mountains. The 1st Reserve Corps Engineer Brigade quickly began work on a 3,000 meter runway which would be capable of supporting any cargo aircraft.

Now, the raids of the camps would begin in earnest.

Near Ali Bayramli-
Persian forces moved into the town, Daryush's M1-A2 was seventh in the column to enter the town's narrow streets. Infantry walked alongside the tanks, keeping their eyes opened for any suspicious activity. They did not notice the RPG-7 protruding ever-so-slightly from a third floor window.

The Azeri freedom fighter aimed the RPG for the passing first Abrams, he knew that he could not kill the crew. But he could disable the tank by hitting its engine. He made the final adjustments and fired the rocket.

The grenade hit the tank's rear. The shape charge ripped through into the engine, disabling the tank. The Crew threwtheir hatches open and jumped out. The second, third and fourth tanks then fired their 120mm cannon at the building, destroying it and the RPG equipped Azeri within.

Parthian Headquarters

The leader of the McQuaide liaison team was young for a lieutenant colonel. He’d worked hard to make himself a competitive officer, and relished the chance to lead men. His current assignment as the commander of the 26th Special Forces Brigade’s Civil Affairs and Liaison unit was a significant challenge. He and his troops were at the mercy of their hosts, and were responsible for the protection of a variety of highly sensitive communications and encryption systems. This particular mission, however, seemed to be going well. The large Parthian army had overwhelmed much of Azerbaijan, and had done so with relatively few casualties.

Today, his mission was diplomatic in nature. Without a mission in the country, the lieutenant colonel had the added role of de facto ambassador. He had been instructed to determine the Parthians’ intentions, and to begin to make arrangements with their government for post-invasion administration of the country. He sat before the Parthian commander and presented a special gift—a Cossack cavalry officer’s saber, dating back to the 1800s. It was a fine weapon, polished and sharpened just as it was during the Crimean War.

“This is a token of thanks from the Prime Minister himself, sir. It has been in the Tbilisi National Armory for centuries, captured from a Cossack general. We present this to you and your people for their assistance in removing the Azerbaijani threat from the world. Already, our intelligence officers inspecting the terror camps are finding that they were making significant progress on much larger attack plans. They were hoping to force McQuaide to back off of their borders, in order to allow them more free movement into and out of the region, to expand their attacks to a more global scale.”

“I am here today, sir, in an additional capacity. My government desires to know what the Parthian government desires to do about a post-invasion government and administration for Azerbaijan.”

Genral Daryush Savhadkohi was amazed by the fine sabre in front of him, it was a true work of art. Not even the Parthian swordsmiths of Kerman created work this excellent more then once a decade. "Many thanks to your government for this wonderful gift", he said admiring the fine worksmanship of the blade. "As for the future", Daryush paused for a second "Though the Persian majority of the Parthians would like a secular, independent, and friendly government in Azerbaijan, the Azeris of Tabriz would like them to be part of our nation." Our government, being Persian, supports the former perspective. We are interested in what your government's view on how Azerbaijan's future should begin. The Shah believes that it is imperative that we crush terror in Azerbaijan as they have plagued our Zoroastrian state for centuries. To further seal the deal we would like to provide your prime minister with this 200 Year old Tabrizi carpet. It is appraised at over two million dollars in value.

The Lieutenant Colonel knew nothing of Persian rugs, but he knew art when he saw it. He nodded, bowing in his seat.

“Thank you, sir. This is a most beautiful gift that I am sure the Prime Minister will cherish.“

“The Commonwealth shares your nation’s desire for a stable and safe Azerbaijan. We realize that the problems of Azerbaijan are more complex than simply the presence of terror camps. The opium industry, the trafficking of human beings, and the problems between the various ethnic populations all contribute to the problems of the nation, and will need significant attention to address. I have been informed by the Prime Minister’s office to propose that the nation of Azerbaijan be divided into two administrative districts as semi-autonomous zones to be supervised by our two governments until it is determined that the districts are prepared for reunification and democracy. We propose that these districts be delineated by a border running from Xacmaz on the coast to Laki, and then west to the Armenian border. The Commonwealth will administer the northern district, and the Parthian government will administer the southern district. Should it be desired, the Commonwealth would be willing to provide assistance in administering the city of Baku, owing to that city’s large size.”

Yes, the problems seem widespread.... Even pervasive. I feel that such a plan would function perfectly. We would probably need substantial military presence for many years, possibly attacks by terrorists. But I think that we could alleviate the problems of our neighbor.

In the meantime however we would like to trade embassies. One of our diplomats and his staff could go to New Dublin while you send yours to Persepolis.

"Yes, sir. I have been instructed to make a similar offer of diplomatic exchange to you, actually. The Commonwealth is prepared to make the following offer to your government:"

The liaison officer passed a sheet of paper with Ministry of State letterhead, signed by both the Minister of State and the Acting Prime Minister.

Ministry of State

1) Exchange of embassy facilities. The government of The Parthians will be provided with one of our four-story, spacious and modern embassy facilities in our capital's 'Embassy Row'. These buildings, buit six years ago on the banks of the Liffey river, are equipped with the modern communications and security systems that modern diplomatic missions demand. We will also offer a similar, but smaller, consular facility in our inland industrial and agricultural city of Novy Tiblisi.

2) Nation in Good Standing trade status. Reduced or eliminated tarriffs, extended rights to Parthian corporations within Commonwealth borders.

3) Military non-aggression treaty. This can, upon a period of negotiation, result in a mutual defense pact.

4) Cultural exchange. Citizens of The Parthians shall be welcomed in McQuaide universities, hospitals, and other facilities, enjoying the same rights as McQuaide citizens. In case of legal trouble, Parthian citizens can be extradicted to Parthian Courts, on the condition that similar rights be extended in the trial process.

The 10th and 4th Air Cavalry divisions flew low to the ground towards the city of Baku. The 10000 Men in Pave Lows and Blackhawks, 10 M-101 howitzers, 30 HMMWVs, and 20 81mm mortars were in Chinook helicopters, preparing to drop into the center of the city. Off the coast 50,000 Mechanized infantry (The Immortals as we call them, based off the name of the best ancient Persian troops) headed towards the cost in hovercrafts carrying their M2-A3s and 100 M1-A2s.

The First two hovercrafts landed right outside of Baku, depositing eight M2-A3s and the 40 men inside. More soon followed brining the number to 4500 M2-A3s and 100 M1-A2s moving directly towards the city of Baku.
A-10s lit up the center of the city with napalm as they prepared the landing zone for the Air cavalry. And just minutes after the flames had died, with the smell of napalm in the air the first blackhawks touched down, depositing their troops which moved towards the government offices of the city.

We have proven that you are responcible for the attack upon Tbilisi with an atomic weapon. This is an act of war. Mobilization of your armed forces, and threats of invasion against the Commonwealth and territories under our protection will not be tolerated.

The international community has been alerted ((OOC: Here-http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=340878)) and all 18 combatant divisions of the army, as well as the entire Marine Corps, Navy, and Army will meet your threat. We too have allies, as well as the advantage of not being a state that has committed ethnic cleansing, piracy, or supported a state-run slave trade.

We offer you one chance at a diplomatic solution: Cease all offensive mobilization, return your fleet to your ports, and retract your condemnation of what you know to be an act of self defense by the Commonwealth of McQuaide, and admit to your part in the attack upon sovereign McQuaide territory with a weapon of mass destruction. In return, McQuaide will guarantee that its administration of Azerbaijan will cease within two years, after sufficient infastructure improvement and economic aid has been provided to eliminate any terrorist threat to our nation. All over the nation of McQuaide, military forces were placed on full alert. Naval vessels put to see and activated radars, search aircraft launched to begin tracking the Generian fleet and continue gathering intelligence on Generian ground targets, and ground units took to the field, dispersing under camoflauge and displacing often enough that targeting or intelligence gathering would be made difficult.

Aircraft were deployed away from the main airbases to more than 16 dispersal fields around the country, eliminating the risk of a few lucky raids destroying the entire Air Force. Patrols of fighters and strike aircraft began to fly, placing many aircraft on an immediate ready status. SAM and SSM batteries were manned and ready, well camoflauged. They didn't use their radars or sensors--they could link to the McQuaide battlefield intelligence network and get targeting data from AWACS, J-STARS, and other units.

A seige mentality was in place--civilians seemed to work harder during the day, and help in civil defense preparations after work, building shelters and storing supplies.

With four Motor Rifle Divisions left to support rebuilding in Azerbaijan, the more modern and lethal front line units to return home and prepare for defending McQuaide.
Generic empire

The Empire was in a war fervor. The soldiers marched through the streets in every major city. Every citizen was aware of what was going on, and they lined the streets to cheer the war machine on. No Generian had forgotten the damage McQuaid had been responsible for in the past. Now it was time to exact vengeance on them in their own lands. Spy plane flights were regular now over the McQuaid Black Sea coast, observing the military buildup. Generian Intelligence chatter had increased to a fever pitch, reporting on every detail from the enemy nation. In the Black Sea the fleet was assembling, preparing for the final order to defend their interests. When it came, war would be a great and glorious thing for Generia.
